▶️Introduction
Hydroelectric power stations supply much of the world’s electrical power. The main three types of hydro turbine are the Kaplan, Francis, and Pelton types. Each turbine has advantages and disadvantages depending upon the application. No one turbine is suitable for operation at all pressure heads and flow rates. Generally:
Kaplan – low pressure heads, low to high flow rates, small MW capacity.
Francis – wide ranging pressure heads and flow rates, can be used as a pump or turbine, small to high MW capacities.
Pelton – medium to high pressure heads, wide ranging flow rates, small to high MW capacities.
Turbines can be classified as impulse or reaction types. A Pelton turbine is an example of an impulse type turbine whilst Francis and Kaplan turbines are examples of reaction type turbines. Reaction turbines rely upon a continuous unbroken body of water from the headwater to the tailwater whilst impulse turbines do not.

▶️Piping flanges are essential components within all piping systems. A flange is a type of mechanical joint and is the second most common type of joint after a welded joint. Unlike welded joints, a flange can be quickly and easily assembled and disassembled.
Flange Types
The most common flange types are the:
- Blind Flange
- Slip-on Flange
- Socket Weld Flange
- Welding Neck Flange (also known as a ‘weld neck flange’)
- Lap Joint Flange (LJF)
- Threaded Flange (also known as a ‘screwed flange’)
Blind flanges are used for a wide range of pressure classes and may have all types of flange face.
Slip-on flanges are used for medium to low pressure classes and use flat or raised faces.
Welding neck flanges are suitable for a wide range of pressures, temperatures and NPS sizes; they are the most common type of flange within the oil and gas industry.
Socket weld flanges are used for smaller nominal pipe sizes, and low to medium pressures.
Lap joint ring flanges do not come into contact with the process medium. A stub end is inserted through the LJF and welded to the associated pipe; it is the stub end that comes into contact with the process fluid. Stub ends can be used for a wide variety of pressure classes and temperatures.
Threaded flanges are used for lower pressure and temperature applications. Typically, the NPS of a threaded flange is small (less than 4”).
The most common flange faces are the:
- Flat Face (FF)
- Raised Face (RF)
- Ring Type Joint (RTJ)
Flat face flanges have a large sealing area and are used for low pressure and low temperature system. Raised face flanges have a much smaller sealing area and are often serrated; this type of flange is used for medium pressure systems and higher. RTJ flanges have a small sealing area and use metal gaskets (hard gaskets); RTJ flanges are used for medium pressure systems and higher.
The most common flange surfaces are the:
- Smooth
- Serrated (which can be concentric or spiral [phonographic])
- Stock Finish
Stock finish surfaces are the most common flange finishing surface. Raised face flanges usually have a serrated surface. Flat face flanges have a smooth surface finish and are used for lower pressure applications.

▶️Introduction
Piston internal combustion engines are also known as IC engines. IC engines are usually petrol/gasoline fired or diesel fired, but it is possible to use other fuels as well e.g. methane gas.
All of an engine's main parts are discussed in detail during the video. The engine shown in the video is a four-stroke diesel engine although it has similarities to a four-stroke petrol engine. Two stroke engines have a much simpler design, less parts, and thus they weigh less (with a correspondingly high power to weight ratio).
A four-stroke combustion engine consists of the following main parts:
Rocker Arm – presses down upon the valve bridge or valve stem.
Tappet Clearance – space between valve tip and rocker arm.
Valve Spring – returns valves to closed position when rocker arm not applying force.
Fuel Injector- injects fuel.
Fuel Inlet Pipe – transfers fuel to the fuel injector.
Suction Valve – allows air into the combustion space.
Exhaust Valve – allows exhaust gas to exit the combustion space.
Fuel Injector Nozzle – sprays atomised fuel into the combustion space.
Clearance Volume – the volume calculated between top dead centre and the top of the cylinder.
Swept Volume – the volume based upon the stroke of the piston and area of the cylinder bore.
Cylinder Volume – the total volume within the cylinder.
Cylinder Bore – the internal diameter of the cylinder.
Compression Ratio – a calculation based upon the volume ratios within the cylinder. Petrol/gasoline engines have a low compression ratio (6-9:1) whilst diesel engines have higher compression ratios (14-20:1).
Top Dead Centre (TDC) – a piston’s furthest point of transit towards the inlet and exhaust valves.
Pushrod (push rod) – transfers force from the cam lobe to the rocker arm.
Piston Crown – the top of the piston.
Piston Ring Grooves – where the piston rings locate within the piston.
Piston Rings - used to seal the space between the piston and cylinder liner.
Stroke – the distance the piston travels from bottom dead centre (BDC) to top dead centre (TDC).
Piston – the piston.
Piston Skirt – the piston skirt (may be short or long).
Piston Pin / Gudgeon Pin / Wrist Pin – the connection between the piston and connecting rod.
Cylinder Wall – the boundary of the combustion space (also sometimes called the cylinder liner).
Cylinder Liner – the internal surface of the cylinder.
Camshaft – used for controlling engine timing such as fuel injection and valve timing; driven by the crankshaft.
Cam / Cam Lobe – presses against the tappets to actuate the rocker arm(s).
Cam Follower – is pushed by the cam and transfers the movement to the push rod.
Bottom Dead Centre (BDC) – the closest point a piston reaches to the crankshaft.
Connecting Rod (Con Rod) – connects the piston to the crankshaft.
Crank Web – used to reduce vibration and balance the engine; part of the crankshaft.
Crankpin Bearing Journal – crankpin bearings are installed between the connecting rod and crankpin.
Main Bearing Journal – bearings installed to support the weight of the crankshaft and hold it in position.
Plain Bearings – also known as journal bearings; separate metal surfaces via a thin film of lubrication oil.
Crankshaft – the main shaft through the engine that transfers the rotary movement to the load.

▶️Introduction
Hand operated water pumps are a common site in many rural areas. They are common because they are easy to install, work well, are easy to operate, and are very robust (require little maintenance). This type of pump is a positive displacement pump; it can pump slurries, liquids and gases.
Water Hand Pump Parts / Water Hand Pump Components
There are various designs of hand pump, but the usual parts include:
Piston / Plunger
Cylinder / Casing
Suction
Discharge
One-way Valves (foot valve and in piston)
Handle
Piston Rod
How Hand Pumps Work
The user presses the handle down, which causes the piston to move upwards. As the piston moves upwards, it creates a negative pressure in the cylinder and water is drawn upwards into the cylinder via the foot valve. When the handle is pulled up, the piston moves downwards, and the piston check valve opens allowing the water to pass through the valve as it moves downwards. When the piston is moving downwards, the foot valve at the base of the pump is closed, but it opens when the piston moves upwards. This causes water to flow upwards through the cylinder as the piston moves upwards, but no flow through the cylinder occurs as the piston moves downwards.

▶️Domestic electric water heaters use electricity to generate the heat required for heating water. A common alternative to an electric water heater, is a gas water heater. Irrespective of the design, the purpose of both heaters is to heat water in an efficient and safe manner.
How It Works
Water is fed to the heater tank via the cold-water inlet. Cold-water flows down through a dip tube and is distributed to the base of the tank. The water is heated by two resistive heater elements. As the water is heated, the hot water rises above the cold water due to the temperature difference (natural convection). The hot water is discharged through the top of the tank, through the hot water discharge connection.
An over-pressure/over-temperature relief valve is installed to prevent over pressurisation of the tank, or over heating of the water. In the event of over heating or over pressurisation, the valve will open, and water will be drained via a drain pipe. The temperature/pressure relief valve (TPR) can be tested by lifting its lever, although this tests only the operating mechanism and not the correct over temperature and over pressure set points.
The two heater elements are resistive heater elements. Electrical current flows through the resistor elements and heat is generated because the resistance path (measured in ohms) is high. Other heaters often use gas burners for heating of the water, although the water heater design is different because these types of heaters require an exhaust path, and air inlet. Thermostats are installed to control when the heating elements turn on and off.
A drain valve is installed at the base of the tank. The drain valve should be opened periodically to drain sediment and mineral deposits from the base of the tank. It is also useful for relieving the pressure inside the tank prior to performing maintenance.
An air bleed is used to purge air from the water heater after maintenance has occurred (this part is not often installed on most water heaters).
Insulation surrounds the water heater tank to reduce heat transfer to the surrounding environment and thus increase the overall efficiency of the heater.
The water heater tank is manufactured from stainless steel with a glass lining or glass enamel coating applied on the internal surfaces; a newer alternative is a polymer-based lining although this is not as common.
A sacrificial anode is manufactured from magnesium, aluminium, or Zinc, or an alloy of these materials, and is installed in the middle of the tank. The anode protects the other metal surfaces from the effects of galvanic corrosion. A steel rod is installed in the middle of the anode, with the anode material applied around the steel rod.

▶️Induction Motor Components
Another name for a three phase (3~) induction motor is the ‘asynchronous motor’. This type of motor is the most common of all motor designs in use within the engineering world today. A typical squirrel cage induction motor consists of:
- Rotor Shaft – to which the bearings are mounted. The shaft penetrates through the casing and is supported by bearings so that a small clearance exists between it and the stator; this is known as the 'air gap'.
- Stator Core and Windings – surrounding the rotor. The stator windings are wound in a looped pattern within slots attached to the inside of the stator core. Electrical current flowing through these windings creates the magnetic field that causes the rotor to turn.
- Frame / Casing - a ribbed external structure (cooling fins) is used to increase the heat transfer rate from the motor casing to air. The stator core slides into the frame.
- Fan – an axial fan blows air across the motor to increase the heat transfer rate from the motor to air; thus keeping the motor cooler.
- Bearings – installed between the shaft and end bells. The bearings may be of the anti-friction or plain design, although only very large motors use plain bearings. Ball bearings (Conrad bearings) and roller bearings and commonly used within induction motors. The bearings support the weight of the rotor and allow it to rotate without passing this rotary motion on to the casing.
- C-clip – a type of retaining ring used to fix the bearing into the end bell and prevent it moving axially.
- Dust seal – seals the space between the shaft and end bells and prevents/reduces foreign particle ingress.
- Terminal box – where the external electrical circuit connects to the motor winding connections.
The motor works based on the theory of electromagnetic induction and the resultant forces created (see ‘Lenz’s law’ and ‘Faraday’s law’). The motor shown in this video is wired in a 'wye'/'star' configuration.
