The team used a fog machine to generate ‘hot smoke’ with controlled flames, to safely simulate how smoke behaves in the station. We monitored smoke movement, speed, extraction time and impact on emergency access points.
These tests aim to ensure Arden Station’s ventilation systems are working as expected to help keep people safe in the rare event of a fire.
Similar tests will be carried across Parkville, State Library, Town Hall and Anzac stations in coming months, ensuring the safety and preparedness of the stations when the Metro Tunnel opens in 2025.

A big community effort went in to building 10 nesting boxes for bandicoots that were installed along the Gippsland Line as part of our project between Nar Nar Goon and Longwarry last year.
Koo Wee Rup Secondary College students built boxes for the endangered bandicoots to rest and nest in, while students at Bunyip Primary School were in charge of decoration.
Meanwhile students at Latrobe Valley Flexible Learning Option were making 20 tree nesting boxes for parrots, microbats and possums to be installed between Drouin and Morwell.
Thanks to our wildlife warriors from both schools for helping to build these predator-proof homes!
