Eventually, Lost and Shade become mates before the border war with OakClan reignites.In the first battle, the OakClan warrior Falconsight kills Lighthop; desperate to avenge her friend, Lost kills Falcon in the next battle to occur. However, unbeknownst to Lost, the battle had already been declared over, and peace temporarily established; Falcon had known this, but hadn't told her. Shade finds her over the body, realizing in horror that what Lost has just done will be seen as murder, which their current leader punishes severely. Back in camp, their leader, Patchstar, accuses Lost of disturbing the peace for a selfish act of revenge; Shade defends his mate, saying it was a misunderstanding. Outraged by his objection, Patchstar kills Shadefeather. Lost manages to flee from ElmClan.A few moons later, Lost gives birth to Shadefeather's kits. They will become Sunleaf, Sleetfang, and Ambergaze. She loves them, but is convinced by Moss, who has secretly been meeting with her, that she can't continue to care for them alone. Moss takes the kits with him to ElmClan, telling the clan they were abandoned. Sleet leaving is especially painful--he looks just like Shade. Before they disappear from sight, though, Sleet turns back to Lost and they touch noses. Lost, now alone, begins to have strange dreams of waking up as a ghost, able to walk around in a greyed-out version of the world. She wanders all the way to ElmClan camp, feeling alone until Sleet appears, having the same dream. The two continue to share dreams like this every night.Sleet, Sun, and Amber then grow up in ElmClan. Sun becomes a healer, while the others become warriors. They're all happy, however, they start to notice their clanmates don't really seem fond of them. Thanks to the timing of their arrival and Sleet's markings, the rest of the clan has guessed who their parents are. Amber grows especially concerned, wanting his siblings remain safe. Moss, noticing his worry, tells Amber he should try to claim he and Sun are not related to Sleet so he can achieve a good rank in the clan, and then protect their family.Amber mulls over his uncle's advice before finally going along with the plan on the day of his warriors assessment. In this universe, the last step of a warriors assessment is to climb Star's Tree and receive a vision from Star. In Amber's vision, he sees Star above, looking down at him; he's overjoyed, taking this to be a sign that Star approves the plan. Sleet's vision, however, is one of himself as a dark spirit--he has a scar over his eye and a fatal neck wound; he's scared and lies about what he saw.The two continue on as warriors, but as Amber goes along with the plan to differentiate him and Sun from Sleet, Sleet grows angry with him. The two start having arguments in public, with Amber calling Sleet "son of a murderer" and Sleet saying that they're brothers and that Lost isn't evil. Amber gets caught up in the whole thing, frustrated that the plan is struggling, and ends up scratching his brother's face, giving him the scar Sleet saw in his vision.Both are horrified. Sleet refuses to talk to Amber, and Amber hunts for Lost, unsure of what he believes. Lost, having been informed by Sleet, asks why Amber hit his brother. Scared by her knowing this, he attacks her. Lost defends herself, but then Amber stands on unstable ground. She throws Amber to safety, but he does not save her in return, letting her fall.Moss and Sleet grieve, while Lost becomes a dark spirit, convinced Star corrupted Amber. Moss and Lost feed Sleet's rage, telling him to kill Amber(the threat). The main guys are kids forced to fight in this war because they have superpowers given to them by their hearts(yes the literal, physical organ--it's not an emotions thing). However, she becomes an evil spirit after Amber indirectly kills her because he's in denial over being related to a murderer.Sleet, initially only remembering Lost's kind side and Amber's aggression towards him over drama about their parentage, is manipulated into murdering Ambergaze after their mother's death. As he stands above Amber's body, he starts to realize that the path he's just taken may be more messed up than he had first thought.And then there's the actual main plot of Grey Ghosts because this convoluted mess is actually just a backstory I hate my brain---------------------------------------------- :)Now the incredibly Not Short synopsis if you're interested in details:Lost is Sleet's mother who had been exiled from their clan for murder since before he and his siblings were born(She killed an enemy warrior who had killed her best friend during a battle, and then also proceeded to lose her cat husband when he tried to defend her actions). When they were born, Lost gave them up to her brother at the border, hoping her former clan could give them a better life. All Lost wanted at that point was to be accepted again and thought that her children should be able to live happy clan lives even if she wasn't anymore. She struggled to stay in touch with her kids until miraculously she found a way to connect to one of her sons(Sleet) through dreams. Little did either of them know that they were connecting through the Dark Forest. Sleet spent much of his childhood adoring his mother as she was a genuinely kind and loving cat at the time. However, this situation would soon change.As Sleet and his siblings grew older, they started hearing insults from their clanmates about their heritage. As a defense mechanism, Sleet's brother, Ambergaze decided that he would believe that he and their sister, Sunleaf, were not actually Sleet's siblings. Amber claimed that only Sleet was Lost's son and that he and Sun were not "monsters like them." Sleet and Sun were both shocked by this and tried to combat these rumors, but the much more popular Ambergaze won out here. From the background as well was their uncle, Mossfur, who seemed to be goading both sides, trying to push Sleet into having to defend his mother.As time went on, tensions rose between Sleet and Amber. The three had been close as kids, but now a divide was building between the toms with Sun caught in the middle trying to fix everything. Sleet and Amber had many yelling matches, the most heated one ending with Amber clawing Sleet's face, giving him a permanent scar. Amber, wanting answers to fix this situation, went after Lost one day. He tracked her down and confronted her about everything. When she confirmed that he was her son, he couldn't handle it and began to panic, not taking notice of his surroundings. The edge of the cliff his mother had made into her home began to crumble, and Lost shoved her son away from the danger. As she herself dangled from the ledge, Amber could've saved her, but he simply watched as it crumbled further and she fell to her death.After this, Sleet's rage towards Amber grew when he was celebrated for killing a dangerous rogue. Meanwhile, Lost's spirit was becoming darker and darker, convinced that it was The Light's(StarClan's) fault that her son had betrayed her so cruelly. In the end, she became an evil spirit and began to haunt Sleet. Lost and Moss then goaded Sleet on to give into his hatred of his brother, blinding him to any option other than murder.
