Its title derives from the 1975 film The Naughty Stewardesses and the 1974 film Blazing Saddles.
Producer Sam Sherman intended the film to be a fond throwback to B-pictures of the 1940s, and hired a cast of screen veterans: the Ritz Brothers, Yvonne De Carlo, Don "Red" Barry, and Bob Livingston. Originally, the film was to have starred the then-current incarnation of The Three Stooges, but last surviving original Stooge Moe Howard was too ill to perform, which led to the Ritz Brothers being brought in as replacements for the March 1975 filming; Moe Howard died in early May 1975. There is some "T&A" content (DeCarlo's character runs a brothel) but nothing explicit, and the film mostly resembles a vintage western, complete with dude ranch setting, outlaw hijackers, stunt riders, masked cowboy hero, and rodeo footage (intercut with shots of Harry and Jimmy Ritz kibbitzing in the stands).
Because of the western theme, the working title The Jet Set was changed to Blazing Stewardesses to capitalize on the box-office hit Blazing Saddles. The film was later re-released under at least three alternate titles: Texas Layover, Cathouse Cowgirls, and The Great Truck Robbery.

Directed by Richard Thorpe and produced by Pandro S. Berman, it was the first film in CinemaScope made by the studio. The screenplay was by Talbot Jennings, Jan Lustig [de] and Noel Langley from Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur, first published in 1485 by William Caxton.
The film was the second in an unofficial trilogy made by the same director and producer and starring Robert Taylor, coming between Ivanhoe (1952) and The Adventures of Quentin Durward (1955). All three were made at MGM's British studios at Borehamwood, near London and partly filmed on location. The cast included Robert Taylor as Sir Lancelot, Ava Gardner as Queen Guinevere, Mel Ferrer as King Arthur, Anne Crawford as Morgan Le Fay, Stanley Baker as Modred and Felix Aylmer as Merlin. The film uses the Welsh spelling for Arthur's nemesis, Modred, rather than the more common Mordred.
In addition to the same producer, director and star, the first two films in the trilogy had the same cinematographer (F. A. "Freddie" Young), composer (Miklós Rózsa), art director (Alfred Junge) and costume designer (Roger Furse). The costumes for this film were executed by Elizabeth Haffenden. In 1955, she would take over from Furse as costume designer for the final film in the trilogy, Quentin Durward. Alfred Junge remained as art director.

Based on Ted Lewis' 1970 novel Jack's Return Home, the film follows the eponymous Jack Carter (Caine), a London gangster who returns to his home town in north-east England to discover more about his brother Frank's supposedly accidental death. Suspecting foul play, and with vengeance on his mind, he investigates and interrogates, regaining a feel for the city and its hardened-criminal element.
Producer Michael Klinger optioned the novel and made a deal with the ailing Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) to finance and release the film, making it the last project to be approved by the studio's Borehamwood division before its closure. Get Carter marked the film debut for both Hodges and supporting actor Alun Armstrong. Principal photography took place in and around Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead and County Durham. Hodges and Caine, the latter of whom served as a co-producer, had ambitions to produce a more gritty and realistic portrayal of violence and criminal behaviour than had previously been seen in British films, with Caine incorporating his knowledge of real criminal acquaintances into his characterisation of Carter. Hodges and cinematographer Wolfgang Suschitzky drew heavily on their backgrounds in documentary films, combined with Hodges' research into the contemporary criminal underworld of Newcastle (in particular the one-armed bandit murder) and the use of hundreds of local bystanders as extras, resulting in a naturalistic feel in many scenes. The shoot was largely incident-free and progressed speedily, despite a one-day strike by the Association of Cinematograph, Television and Allied Technicians. The production went from novel to finished film in eight months, with location shooting lasting 40 days.
Get Carter suffered in its promotion due to MGM's financial problems and the declining British film industry of the period, which relied increasingly on US investment. Initial UK critical reception to the film was mixed; reviewers grudgingly appreciated the film's technical achievements but were dismayed by the complex plot, violence and amorality, in particular Carter's apparent lack of remorse at his actions. Despite this, the film turned a respectable profit in the UK. American critics were generally more enthusiastic, but the film was poorly promoted in the US by United Artists and languished on the drive-in circuit, while MGM focused its resources on producing a blaxploitation-themed adaptation of the novel, Hit Man.
Although it was not made available on home media until 1993, Get Carter maintained a cult following, and endorsements from directors such as Quentin Tarantino and Guy Ritchie led to the film earning critical reappraisal.[5] In 1999, Get Carter was ranked 16th on the BFI Top 100 British films of the 20th century; five years later, a survey of British film critics in Total Film magazine chose it as the greatest British film. Get Carter was remade in 2000 by Warner Bros. under the same title, with Sylvester Stallone portraying Jack Carter and Caine in a supporting role. The remake was poorly-received by critics in the US, and was not given a UK theatrical release.

The screenplay was loosely based on the contemporary Whit Masterson novel Badge of Evil (1956). The cast included Charlton Heston, Janet Leigh, Joseph Calleia, Akim Tamiroff and Marlene Dietrich.
Universal-International commissioned the film adaptation of the novel in April 1956. Albert Zugsmith was selected as producer, who then hired television writer Paul Monash to write the script. Charlton Heston was brought onboard to star in January 1957 and suggested that Orson Welles direct the project. Welles was hired to direct and star, as well as re-write the script. Filming started the next month and wrapped in April. During the film's post-production, creative differences between Welles and Universal executives arose and Welles was forced off the film. Subsequently, Universal-International revised the film's editing style to be more conventional and ordered re-shoots to be made in November 1957. In response to the new version, Welles wrote a 58-page memo in which he elaborately outlined his creative vision for the film and asked that his version be restored.
Initially dismissed by film critics, Touch of Evil found popularity among European audiences and won top awards at the 1958 Brussels World Film Festival. During the 1970s, its reputation was renewed and it is now widely regarded as one of Welles's best motion pictures and one of the best classic-era noir films. Touch of Evil was re-edited according to Welles's original vision, as outlined in his memo, in 1998.
In 1993, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
