Captured in 2019, this inspired performance of The Jungle was conducted by Nicholas Buc and features the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis alongside the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in Melbourne’s Hamer Hall. Marsalis’s masterwork highlights the paradoxes that define New York City, where wealth and poverty, grit and romance, and unlimited growth and stagnation all coexist. But it’s also a meditation on what being human means today—a widescale attempt to understand the maelstrom of modern life and remind listeners of what brings us together.

The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis and Special Guest Paquito D’Rivera perform a pair of exclusive JALC commissions by mid-career masters—Tres Aguas by Cuban pianist Elio Villafranca and Colors of Colombia by Colombian harpist Edmar Castañeda. Castañeda is a transformative virtuoso of the Llanera harp, a traditional instrument from the Eastern Plains of Colombia and a fixture on the international jazz arena for more than a decade; he’ll mix the diverse rhythms of his homeland with the various dialects of swing, reminding us that Colombia and New York are in the same hemisphere. Villafranca’s Tres Aguas features dancers from Cuba, Peru, and the U.S. moving to music influenced by the rich Afro-Diasporic musical streams from Venezuela, Cuba, and New Orleans jazz. The common thread is long-time Jazz at Lincoln Center extended family member Paquito D’Rivera—himself a distinguished composer and authoritative interpreter of a wide range of Pan-American idioms on clarinet and alto saxophone—whose Panamericana Suite, which debuted at JALC in 2000, helped launch Jazz at Lincoln Center’s long-standing relationship to Pan-American music.

The guest star for this year’s edition, music-directed by JLCO veteran Victor Goines, is Samara Joy, 24, who joins an all-star roll-call of predecessors that includes Cécile McLorin Salvant, Gregory Porter, Kurt Elling, Rubén Blades, René Marie, Ashley Pezzotti, Vuyo Sotashe, Veronica Swift, and Catherine Russell. “Christmas is the one time when America is not segregated in its music,” says Marsalis. “All the generations come together. Dizzy's Club is excited to present emerging guitarist from Belgium, Eliott Knuets. Eliott started playing the guitar at 4 years old and has not put it down since. In 2020, alongside Jonathan Collin, Rémi Ghesquiere en Nero Vergaert, Eliott launched the “Collision” project with which he performs and composes. That same year, the Selection Commission for Dutch-speaking education honored Knuets with the “topkunstenstatuut” (high level in arts status) for his level and his musical projects. He currently attends at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels where he studies with Fabien Degryse. Eliott also had the opportunity to perform with trumpeter Wynton Marsalis in Bozar and regularly performs on the Belgian stage with professional musicians such as Peter Hertmans, Stéphane Mercier, Olivier Collette, Nic Thijs, Toine Thijs, Maayan Smith, Jeremy Dumont, and Sal La Rocca. In January 2021 Eliott recorded his first album of original music with Olivier Collette on piano, Sam Gerstmans on double bass, Daniel Jonkers on drums and American saxophonist Walt Weiskopf who's played with Buddy Rich, Frank Sinatra, Steely Dan, Brad Mehldau, and Peter Bernstein.

“Jazz music is the perfect metaphor for democracy," says famed trumpeter Wynton Marsalis. At a time when America—and indeed, the whole world—finds itself at a crossroads, the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer has been inspired to write a poignant and buoyant work, "The Democracy! Suite," which proves that the joy and beauty of jazz can bring us all closer together.

That new suite is now a digital album from Marsalis and a septet composed of members of the famed Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. Recorded live in Jazz at Lincoln Center's Appel Room during the Covid-19 lockdown, the work is irresistible and irrepressible. Tracks like “Out Amongst the People (For J Bat)” and “Be Present” are an impassioned reflection of turbulent times that find peerless musicians working as a harmonious community, urging us to reflect on the past and reconsider the future.

"The question that confronts us right now as a nation is, 'Do we want to find a better way?'" Marsalis says. The music of The Democracy! Suite may be instrumental, but it speaks for itself, urging us onto action—to get out of our seats and fight for the world we believe in.
