Vintage 1970s news reporter kit HAINBACH 2024-04-21 | When @Sennheiser asked me to collab for #421 day I jumped at the chance to cosplay as a 1970s news reporter. I took my trusty vintage MD421-2 and combined it with a period-correct Uher Report Monitor 4000. I have seen reporters on TV, children’s books (Ali Mitgutsch Wimmelbücher for my German audience) and IRL rocking this combination, down to the leather bag. Recording outside I was surprised how sensitive the combination was - I had used the 421 in the studio, on drums especially for my „Nuclear Drum Loops“ sound pack. Outside it picked up tiny details from the environment -.especially birdsong sounded beautiful. As someone obsessed with field recording on tape, that was a wonderful surprise. I can replace my heavy Nagra setup with the Uher/MD421 in many cases. The MD421 is a truly classic mic, here is to many more 421 days! Now @sennheiser, how about a MD21 day? The Renaissance of a Rare Rave Classic HAINBACH 2024-04-08 | The Orgon Systems Enigiser was not much of hit when it came out, with only 50 to 150 units being known to exist. But over time it became a cult-classic, thanks to its excellent filter that fits perfectly into underground dance music. After decades of it being a collector's item, we are now spoiled for choice as two companies offer clones and the original creator is re-releasing the Enigiser again. The Drum Machine That Shaped Krautrock HAINBACH 2024-03-26 | The Elka Drummer One is no Klaus Dinger or Jaki Liebzeit, but it deserves its place in the history of Krautrock drumming. It was used by a bunch of German bands at the time, most prominently the wonderful Harmonia, a supergroup consisting of members of Neu! and Cluster (some of which where involved in a short-lived iteration of Karftwerk, too). The Retro-Futuristic Sound of a Rare Italian Synthesizer HAINBACH 2024-02-05 | Form changes function - the Elgam Carousel first appeared as part of a big organ. Elgam quickly realized that they could a make a standalone product out of this, for the more mobile musicians entertaining crowds at business and family functions. They set a trend - CRB and Elka followed with the Computerband 2000 and Wilgamat. These standalone keyboards can be called the first groove boxes. How To Make a Test Equipment Drum Machine HAINBACH 2024-01-29 | Test Equipment was for me always an experiment: using unmusical science, medical and engineering tools for music is Dark Souls level of synthesis difficulty. Coaxing tones out of them requires dedication and patience, but is very rewarding, both in developing new skills and musical results. I tried to stay to true to the tiny test equipment music world, shunning easy solutions to make it music, like using it with regular sequencers, sampling the wall or excessive editing in post. But after a few crucial pieces died off and repair costs sky-rocketed and I decided to combine it with Eurorack modular. I was very surprised by the result. From “Terminator” to “Poltergeist”, This Vintage Keyboard Provides HAINBACH 2024-01-14 | I stumbled upon the Kawaii PH50 Pop Keyboard while browsing Reverb. The seller noted the odd cinematic presets of the instruments and I got curious: Karate Kid, Halloween, Poltergeist all suggested more powerful sounds than similar sized boards of the time. Since it was cheap I ordered it and right after unboxing I was triggered by waves of nostalgia (which I usually don't fall for). It has presets that remind me of watching horror films on VHS and playing Amiga 500 games with my friends in the late 80s and early 90s. It sounds distinctly lofi, which makes it stand out today, but has very limited synthesis capabilities. A Rather Interesting Prop in The Fall Of The House Of Usher #halloween HAINBACH 2023-10-28 | When I binged the Fall of the House of Usher, a new horror series on Netflix, something caught my eye: State Attorney C. Auguste Dupin employs a vintage dictaphone to document his interrogation of the enigmatic and twisted Billionaire Roderick Usher. The prop department chose one of my favorite dictaphones, the Sony Mic’n’ Micro M-100MC. This is one of the last microcassette recorders ever produced, and is now 27 years old. What could be the motivation to equip a character in a 2023 series with an ancient magnetic tape device? I make some educated guesses. Beware: there are SPOILERS!
