Dubai 2030 without Sandstorms and Dust; Kalbod Studio unveils Sandstorm Absorbent Skyscrapers Kalbod Design Studio 2023-02-24 | Have you ever encountered sandstorms? If you have ever spent some time in Dubai or any other city in UAE, especially during spring and summer, you have probably witnessed its tropical desert climate and massive sandstorms. And you might know that when they occur, they slow down or, on larger scales, completely shut down the city’s ordinary rhythm. Besides this, it is a proven fact that sandstorms gradually cause respiratory problems and pollutes the air and water, which will end up destroying the natural habitat.On the other hand, as you probably know, Dubai loves and encourages creative yet functioning ideas! And Designing skyscrapers is one of the most popular types of architecture in Dubai So, at Kalbod Architecture Studio, we decided to study and channel this natural behavior of the desert lands via architecture and set ourselves the challenge of providing a suitable solution to the sandstorm in Dubai by integrating creativity and technology.The design process of the Absorbent Sand Storm Skyscraper, the creative integration of structure, and facilities, along with a sustainable approach, will lead to the formation of an area that, in addition to improving the weather conditions of Dubai, will play a very vital role in reducing energy consumption, will become a research base to study and get to know these storms better to be able to provide better functioning solutions in the future.According to the location of the Absorbent Sand Storm Skyscraper, and the high possibility of storms, extensive studies were done regarding this phenomenon before starting to design. To control this issue and make positive use of it. The glass structure slowly rises from the ground and covers the facilities that form the central part of the skyscraper, and the whole design process is inspired by its function. The Absorbent Sand Storm Skyscraper project consists of 25 towers on the Dubai main route; with the design idea to deal with the sand storms in Dubai, these towers have turned their form into an open embrace to absorb dust particles.Studies showed that soil particles are electrically charged. Therefore, the main structure of the towers consists of two deep cavities to absorb soil particles via magnetism, removing the electrical charge from the particles. Sand particles enter the cavities and are attached to the smart panels inside the holes, which will open to a certain extent according to the storm’s intensity. Then to ensure that all particles are neutralized, all their electric charge is taken in two different stages. Due to the larger diameter of the soil particles at a lower height, the lower cavity has a larger opening.In a sustainable approach, installing sand batteries in the tower's facilities is considered, which can store energy for several months and be used even in other regional buildings. More than one skyscraper is needed to control sandstorms. So, we have predicted the presence of 25 towers on our site, which will overlap and improve the function of each other. Our ultimate goal is to create a multi-functional area centered on scientific research, and each tower will be dedicated to a specific position. The zoning will include residential use and research institutes for physics, aerospace, technology, biology, and medicine.

This has led to a gradual disappearance of pedestrian walkways between tall buildings and streets, posing a significant challenge to urban mobility.Can architecture restore the ability to navigate cities and take a step towards reclaiming the share of pedestrians in contemporary cities?The Dubai Art Museum, a beacon of hope in restoring pedestrians' share of the city, stands as an innovative architectural solution. It represents the first step towards transforming a bustling metropolis like Dubai into a walkable town that caters to all its citizens' needs.By choosing Burj Park as the project site, strategically located near the Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Fountain, the Art Museum has been designed to be one of the city's most significant hubs. It holds great importance in terms of both public and tourist presence. Furthermore, it is one of the few places in the city that allows citizens to experience a communal space.The Dubai Art Museum incorporates a network of pedestrian pathways from the park and its surroundings to the museum building. These pathways are strategically designed to pass through functional spaces within the park, such as seasonal markets and small outdoor exhibitions, and lead visitors to the museum's main entrance via a ramp.The ramp rises 5 meters above the park's ground level before entering the museum. It provides access from the park to the semi-transparent skin that leads to the museum interiors. To preserve the value of pedestrian pathways and prevent their obstruction, pathways have been incorporated beneath the ramp, providing a perpendicular path beneath the ramp and a place to rest or hang out in its shade.Entering the museum is through a semi-transparent membrane that fully displays the curves and successive layers of the building's central core in its form and volumetric shadows. This membrane serves as a prelude to the main building, creating a space influenced by its shapes and curves that can host artistic and cultural gatherings outside the museum's main building.This layered space effectively filters Dubai's harsh climate while ensuring that the flow of life is not abruptly cut off when entering the museum building. It continues seamlessly, creating a halo of life's flow inside the museum visible from the outside. Also, the vibrancy of the external space remains visible from within the outer membrane of the building.Upon entering the central core of the museum, vertical access (elevators) takes visitors to the building’s top floor. From there, with a gradual descent along the central ramp, visitors can view the gallery spaces and artworks and then return to the starting point, which is the main lobby.The Dubai Art Museum initiates a path where human presence and interaction with the building, open and enclosed spaces, and other citizens are not just regarded, but celebrated. This interaction plays a defining role in Dubai's future urban development, inspiring a new era of architectural design.

Digging for Light (Qanat Villa Oasis) Introduction Kalbod Design Studio 2023-12-16 | The traditional and local architecture of each region may have principles that must be updated and fit our fast-paced, highly dependent technology lives, but, as a matter of fact, with minor changes, they can have the long-lost solutions hidden within their simple yet highly functioning approach towards architecture as a problem-solving instrument.The ancient Persian city of YAZD, described as the “Noble City of Yazd” by Marco Polo, and its nearby villages are great examples of this notion. This historical city is located amidst the most desolated parts of the Iranian Plateau, which stands on a primarily barren sand-ridden plain with a desertic climate. Yet solely because of its rich architecture, it is one of the ancient Iranian history and culture cradles.Inspired by the ancient and resilient architecture of Yazd and choosing the historical and semi-abandoned village of Ernan as our project’s site, we aimed to add value to our surroundings, whether to its nature, artificial aspects, or even to its human society. The village of Ernan is adjacent to a mountain where human tracks from 12000 years ago exist. It is also close to a seasonal lake, lots of dried qanats, and numerous villages that need proper public, medical, and educational facilities.
New York Financial Bridge Introduction Kalbod Design Studio 2023-10-30 | The primary goal of the NEW YORK BRIDGE project was to answer the need for more open and green spaces in the compact living and working areas in Manhattan’s financial district and the world-famous Wall Street. To achieve this, we at Kalbod Design Studio designed a suspended bridge that connects the financial district of Manhattan with the green areas of New Jersey above the Huston River while creating a magnificent view of the Statue of Liberty on the North Atlantic Ocean.This bridge has two access levels; one is 35 meters above the water surface and provides an impressive panoramic view. The other level is 10 meters below the first, provides an amusing pedestrian path, and offers multiple gathering spaces for people to come together.The structure comprises small intersecting trusses along the bridge to control this bridge’s weight and dead load without blocking the fantastic view. It keeps the pathway levels connected with an oblique ring-like beam that carries the main load.This 600-meter, ring-like structure is also our architectural answer for the lack of low-cost rental units that many visitors seek in this dynamic neighborhood to provide low-cost micro-units for short stays in Manhattan.It comprises hundreds of micro units providing a low-cost place to stay with an impressive view of the Hudson Bay in New York and New Jersey for people visiting Manhattan for business. Adding another exciting quality, this massive structural ring has a rotating layer of large meeting rooms that will go around the ring’s perimeter two times a day. It relocates each unit from 600 meters above the ground to deep into the water, becoming another tourist attraction for New York City.
Dubai Art Museum Kalbod Design Studio 2023-10-29 | Dubai is becoming the first city of the future, but in this sea of skyscrapers and eye-catching buildings that showcase the possibilities of engineering and technology, humanity and human experience seem to gradually disappear as the required spaces that encourage social interactions are drastically shortened.In the Dubai Art Museum, humans and their experiences are the primary source of inspiration. The museum building is designed following this approach that makes humans the center of the project, both for inspiration and in function.The Dubai Art Museum is designed with a “double skin” that lets humans enter the building but remain visible from outside. The first outer skin is transparent, allowing the motions indoors to be visible from outside, while the inner layer has a sculptural form made of rammed earth, creating a unique sense of tranquility inside that produces the same experience as being in the canyons or caves.
The Bastion of Tartu Culture Kalbod Design Studio 2023-08-19 | The design solution for the sustainable cultural center of the new generation on its richly detailed historical site required a balance between preserving the site's historical significance and integrating modern design elements that promote sustainability.Understanding the site’s history and significance achieved through deep research guided the design process by determining the best way to integrate modern design elements while preserving the site’s historical integrity and identifying the parts of the site that were the most significant and required the most protection. Getting inspired by historical landmarks such as the nearby church and the old theatre center or the town hall, the façade was shaped with 5,10,5 proportions, but it’s not shown with the material change or the color difference on the façade but with the shape of the building itself. This local and historical inspiration was completed with a color pallet that is both in harmony with the city and the surrounding nature of the site.With all that in mind, the primary concept of the design was defined by a 3x3 mesh that follows the historical and existing green network. Dedicating each block to the buildings, the central yard, which is also inspired by the historical buildings of the neighborhood, is developed, with a modern approach as a pathway ramp and the green block that includes the reserved trees and plans to meet the biodiversity sensitivity of the old park and the newly planted local flora and fauna that made it possible to engage the communities and reflect their needs and values while providing a sense of ownership and pride.This network of functional blocks has been shaped according to the city plan that shows the city of Tartu’s stages of development throughout the ages, which completed and inspired the access points of the design as well. Three entrance roads have been designed to simultaneously meet the required privacy and publicity, each complementing the two others.

To bring out a sense of belonging and create a place to reflect a dynamic city, multiple access routes have been designed to let citizens from all around the city gather together and spend time performing arts or just exploring the multi-leveled new cultural landmark located in the waters of the Pacific Ocean. These exciting access routes reach out to metro stations which makes the accessibility of the project quite possible from all around the city within a few minutes, addressing mobility with nature-friendly solutions.The access roads are made of two main routes; one deep down underwater protects the visitors from harsh weather and makes it suitable for walking, cycling, and hanging out deep into the ocean. Dubai Healthcare City Kalbod Design Studio 2023-03-18 | Dubai Healthcare CityWith a futuristic approach, Dubai Healthcare City is designed by Kalbod Architects to build a multi-functional complex focusing on medical services on Dubai seashores. The creative integration of digital and sustainable architecture, geographic and social conditions of the region, and acknowledging the future needs of tourists and citizens of Dubai were the primary fuels for designing the world’s largest medical tourism center in the Persian Gulf.The project is defined in five different layers with a pedestrian-oriented approach. Each layer is dedicated to a specific use: the underwater layer consists of the main entrance, the only access route for cars and public transportation, as well as pedestrian access and public green spaces. The next level focuses on the futuristic approach of the design and is designed for predicted future transportation. Reaching the land level, the crescent-shaped site plan symbolizes the traditional Arabic architecture style and embraces the buildings; the central tower for educational and cultural uses, 14 smaller towers dedicated to medical functions, and finally, smaller buildings supporting the island’s residential needs. The last two upper levels consist of the parametrically designed suspended path providing exclusive access to the residential zones and the suspended sterile pathway that connects the medical towers.Along with all the design principles considered for Dubai Healthcare Center, the design meets the sustainable standards as the green spaces are not just dedicated to and small area but with the vertical garden idea, the vegetation grows on each terrace in the residential area with filters and soothes the harsh warm weather of the Persian Gulf.
