The result was a passionate and long-lived musical partnership between two masters of their respective instruments, but the original recordings were never released. For the first time ever, more than 20 years after its recording, this lost treasure is finally made available to the public.The duo was initially brought together by Bang & Olufsen and set out to celebrate Ellington and his partnership with bassist Jimmy Blanton. With the help of Per Arnoldi, who is also credited with the album’s artwork, NHØP was approached to take part and tapped Mulgrew Miller to tackle a series of Ellington’s classic themes and a couple of their own. He saw the opportunity to work with Mulgrew Miller, a pianist whom he admired and had not yet had the opportunity to work with, and this decision paid off greatly for both of them. A great musical and personal partnership was born, and the duo’s captivating chemistry is obvious from the first notes.The collaboration was a unique meeting of two of the greatest jazz-minds of their time paying tribute to another legendary partnership. Thankfully, these recordings are finally available and they make up an important addition to the already extensive and impressive legacies of both NHØP and Mulgrew Miller as well as a beautiful tribute to Ellington and Blanton.

Jacob Artved is the youngest of a very talented new generation of Danish jazz guitar players. At the age of 20 he has already been a working musician for years, being introduced on the scene by Danish guitar legend Jacob Fischer at the age of 15. He was admitted to the Royal Academy of Music as the youngest student ever, but chose to drop out, move to New York and spent the long nights jamming instead. On this live-recording from the legendary Jazz club Montmartre in Copenhagen he is featured by one of the greatest drummers of all time, Mr. Louis Hayes. Commenting on the experience, Jacob says: “To play this music with someone you feel so much admiration for can almost be an intimidating experience and, in some cases, make you hold back your creativity in utter respect and fear of doing something wrong. This feeling is something that I think most young musicians, including myself, have experienced at some point in their career. Of course, those situations are what make you stronger, practice more, and think even harder! The album features beautiful and intimate jazz ballads with a Scandinavian sound, inspired by the special musical feeling that emerges when night turns to day.The album is a follow-up to their previous success “Nightfall” - also on Storyville Records. On both albums musicians embrace the ballad repertoire in collaboration with internationally renowned guitarist Jacob Fischer and swing drummer Kristian Leth. The tunes are inspired by what musicians play together in the wee small hours after a late night gig, when most of the audience has gone home. As Sigurdur Flosason explains, this music has a special feeling:"The morning’s music has nothing to prove. It simply is, neither old nor new, complex nor simple. In a way it is the core and the essence of all music."On this album the musicians has taken the idea even further, explicitly choosing songs such as “Morning Glory” and “The Night We Called it a Day” - songs that all relate to daybreak. The band was led by three of the absolute best of the avantgarde musicians at the time: Don Cherry on cornet, Archie Shepp on tenor sax and John Tchicai on alto sax. The music is heavily inspired by alto player Ornette Coleman and pianist Cecil Taylor. The brilliant, high-energy performance of the musicians is an example of improvisational, modern jazz at its absolute best.

Duke Ellington’s phrase of “beyond category” perfectly fit “Jaws” because his highly individual voice was always quite unique and stood apart from anyone else.

As you can see here, he was a masterful bandleader, with an unique approach to the electric guitar. He was not only a very influential guitarist, but also very proficient on the fiddle. Besides the legendary 50s recordings on Peacock, he made a string of very, very good lps. Especially his his collaboration with Roy Clark on Makin' Music from 1979, and Alright Again! from 1981 is recommended.

The band which was a quartet today consisting of Thomas Hass (ts), Nikolaj Hess (e-piano), Lennart Ginman (b) and Frands Rifbjerg (dr) played a set with both tunes from the album and a rendition af a Greig composition.The background music is Clark's Heavenly Blues recorded live at the show.The venue is in the middle of Politikens Boghal, which is normally a bookstore, but for shows the stairs are used for seats with cushions and all. It is a lovely place with both great sound, vibe and wonderful people.
