Interactive narratives are complex to manage, involving non-linear plots, branching dependencies, and a wealth of choices for players. Co-developed with Xbox, Narrative Graph is a tool that assists developers in creating dynamic narratives that adapt to player choices, fostering deeper engagement.
With Narrative Graph, you can upload any source materials – such as outlines or scripts – and generate a graph with branching narratives that allows you to visualize the structure of your story. You can also use AI to generate ideas for new story beats or dialogue based on what works best in your game. Narrative Graph can also parse out character profiles and world lore from your source materials, giving you a comprehensive tool to manage narrative elements.
To illustrate one application of Narrative Graph, we created a basic prototype called Mists of Aurora. The prototype takes players through three scenes of a text-based narrative game inspired by tabletop RPGs. The addition of an AI-powered narrator and mechanics means that every playthrough is different – with Narrative Graph ensuring that the overarching story remains cohesive and engaging.
Narrative Graph enables player-centric narratives and gameplay, while making it easy to holistically visualize story elements, iterate quickly, and produce content. We’re continuing to work with and learn from developers in private preview, and will be releasing the tool later this year.

In video games, players willingly suspend their sense of disbelief in the hopes of being transported into a vibrant game world. AI NPCs can enrich immersion by contributing to a realistic and dynamic world. But an NPC that breaks character can hurt immersion if the dialogue lacks believability or includes information that the character shouldn't be aware of.
That’s why we created our Cognitive Control feature. Without proper constraints, LLMs provide NPCs with a breadth of knowledge that may not fit their character description. Knowledge Filters offer creators a path to more specific levels of knowledge access and hallucination control.

Our long-term memory features creates a recollection of all notable information shared during character and player dialogue over multiple play sessions. That’s why we created our Goals and Actions YAML Editor feature. We currently offer two options for triggering goals and actions. The first allows game designers to manually trigger the action similar to how they currently set them up. This feature is excellent for something like a specific greeting for your players.

Origins is a technical demo created by the team at Inworld to showcase NPCs powered by artificial intelligence. Characters generate responses in real-time based on player inputs and the dialogue is completely unscripted. Origins was built using Unreal Engine and MetaHuman Creator.

This is the first part in a five part tutorial series on the Inworld Demo Gallery in Unreal. The Demo Gallery allows developers to quickly play around with working examples of Inworld features. Our Demo is a great jumping off point for getting familiar with Inworld within Unreal Engine.
We believe having living documentation within an example project can be an easy way to learn, without adding bloat to core documentation. The project will serve as a continually updating demo to show off new Inworld features as they release.
The Demo Gallery is not intended to act as a getting started walkthrough. Information on how to integrate Inworld with Unreal Engine can be found in the documentation section of our website and in the Getting Started tutorial we produced.
The gallery demo has a few examples already but we're excited to add more showcases in the future as the capabilities of Inworld continue to expand! We’ll go into more detail about each of these showcase demos in future videos. Find them all in the Unreal Gallery Demos playlist on YouTube as they're released.
