Science in Space - 1966 Dudley Observatory Media 2014-02-27 | A short documentary that aired on WMHT in Schenectady in 1966. It features Curtis Hemenway, director of the Dudley Observatory from 1956-1977. Hemenway gives a thirty minutes lecture on three different types of collections experiments that involve sampling materials from very high altitudes. During the first thirteen minutes, Hemenway give describes the properties of micrometeorites, or space dust, the process for collecting it from the upper atmosphere and the implications for aerospace travel. He then explains a similar set of experiments dealing with noctilucent clouds; extremely high altitude clouds found at the poles. Project S-55 - ca. 1960 Dudley Observatory Media 2014-02-27 | A short documentary produced by Langley Research Center about the Explorer S-55 mission. The purpose was to launch a satellite that would measure the size, number, distribution, and momentum of micrometeorites in the near-earth environment.The first launch occurred on June 30, 1961. It failed when the third stage of the rocket did not ignite. Two later launches succeeded in achieving orbit.
