Peter HeathThe Listowel to Ballybunion Railway opened in 1888 and was just over nine miles in length. It ran successfully for 36 years, finally closing in 1924 after never recovering properly from serious damage sustained during the civil war. The railway used the Lartigue single rail system which was unique to this line. The demonstration line at Listowel uses the track-bed of the standard gauge railway station, closed in the 1970s. The diesel loco is a reasonably accurate representation of the double boilered steam locos, built by Hunslet of Leeds, used on this railway. There remains, in the area of the original terminus, the foundations of the original switches/turntables. 2nd July 2015. Many thanks to Martin Griffin, was our driver and guide on the day. Part 1.Peter Heath2016-06-30 | Canadian Pacific's Kicking Horse Pass, 15th June 2016. We begin this sequence at the small town of Field BC where a grab shot captures this eastbound 132 car freight as it starts its climb over the pass. In steam days 'pushers' would be added here. About 7k further east the four loco train is seen entering the lower portal of the first spiral tunnel. This scene is watched by numerous excited spectators from a dedicated viewing point. The train grinds its way through the tunnel and is soon seen passing over itself after gaining about 50' in height. It then passes just below us. It would then negotiate a second spiral tunnel to gain more elevation before cresting the summit about 10k (by rail) from our view point. This second tunnel is difficult to access. *Strictly speaking the Big Hill is the original line built at a gradient of 4.5%, preceding the spiral tunnel route at 2.2%. Never the less it is still a stiff climb. The locos involved are all class DRF-44 numbers 8936, 9835 (heading), 9374 (mid train) and 9809(rear).
