Clarky AviationFirst aired on 15th February 1988, this Horizon documentary looks at the growth of the UK's Air Traffic Control network, and the problems that this created in terms of airspace congestion and the increased likelihood of air-misses. The program discusses the limited aerial capacity of UK airspace, the limits of the technology of the time (the ageing IBM 9020) and the introduction of new technologies such as Flow Control and Conflict Alert - systems that are still in use today. The program also looks at some of the safety related problems faced shortly after the opening of London City Airport.
The video and audio have both been re-mastered, and I hope that you enjoy watching this re-uploaded documentary. This recording was originally uploaded by Sean Johnston, and I have edited it to make it easier to watch.

In my job I manage the holding stacks for aircraft landing at Heathrow, and place them "downwind" for the Final approach Director (FIN) to line them up with the runway. During the pandemic and furlough I have been playing a game called London Control to keep my skills sharp, and have been enjoying clearing some busy skies for fun!
Today we are simulating aircraft landing towards the east on runway 09 Left. A small part of the job of the Intermediate Director (INT) at Heathrow is working departures that head towards the Compton (CPT) VHF radio beacon, and you'll see a few of those in this video. You'll also see one aircraft inbound to RAF Northolt towards the end of the video, which we would normally speak to as well.
Let me know if you enjoy this small insight into how your plane gets onto the ground when you fly into Heathrow! Be sure to like the video, subscribe and leave a comment telling me what you think I should do next!

In 2016, the BBC released a TV series called Skies Above Britain. As well as a look at various aspects of British aviation, the BBC were provided an unprecedented look behind the scenes at the London Area and Terminal Control Centre at NATS Swanwick. This video is a cutting together of almost every bit of footage from Air Traffic Control in this program. As an aviation enthusiast, and working in ATC, I found this look behind the curtain fascinating and kept on watching these bits back. I have cut this together, mainly for my own viewing, so that you can see all of the ATC bits from this program in one place - no skipping or episode changing needed!
All footage is the property of the BBC, and I do not claim ownership of it. Thanks for watching!
