Mayhap I perceived a motte-and-bailey where there was none. Based on the brief perusing I did, it seems the field is considered controversial among some sociologists today, partly because it's difficult to draw one-to-one comparisons between social memes and biological organisms, and partly because it can be seen as oversimplifying more complicated processes. I've found mimetics to be a useful way of thinking about culture - although I didn't until now know much about the history of the field - but feel free to dispense with the analogy if it isn't helpful for you.- I still can't find the source of that alleged Paul Verhoeven quote, even though it keeps getting reposted in memes.
