Uni Wheel is a functionally integrated wheel drive system that dramatically improves available space inside an electric vehicle (EV) by moving the main drive system components to the vacant space within the wheel hub. In doing so, Hyundai Motor and Kia have designed a completely new structure for the drive system.
In internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles power is transmitted from the engine through the transmission and to the wheels via drive shafts and constant velocity (CV) joints. In EVs, the engine and transmission are replaced by a motor and reduction gear, but the final method of transmission to the wheels is the same.
Uni Wheel opens new possibilities and enables a flat-floor configuration by moving an EV’s reduction gear inside the wheel hub, locating a compact individual motor close to each wheel, reducing the length of the drive shafts.
The system frees up significantly more interior space compared with conventional drive systems, enabling future mobility products optimized for various applications, such as Purpose Built Vehicles (PBVs).
“We are pleased to showcase innovative ideas that could become game changers in the future mobility market,” said Jongsool Park, Senior Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Technology Development of Hyundai Motor Group. “We will perfect the technology so that customers can experience mobility in a completely different and new way.”
Advancing future mobility through new technology
Recent advances in electrification, autonomous driving and connectivity technologies are transforming mobility products into living spaces. Hyundai Motor and Kia’s focus on space utilization in future vehicle architectures will further boost customer value and provide owners with richer user experiences as a result.
Uni Wheel uses a special planetary gear configuration consisting of a sun gear in the center, four pinion gears on each side and a ring gear surrounding this arrangement. Power generated by the motor is transmitted to the sun gear, which in turn engages the pinion gears to rotate the ring gear. This is connected to the wheel to drive the vehicle.
Uni Wheel’s pinion gears are connected to each other to form two linkages, and this multi-link mechanism enables Uni Wheel’s multi-axis movement to allow a wide range of suspension articulation.
A conventional drive system using a regular CV joint suffers from a decrease in efficiency and durability as the angle of drive shaft deflection increases when travelling over bumpy, undulating surfaces. Uni Wheel can transmit power with almost no change to efficiency regardless of wheel movement, ensuring high durability and ride comfort.
When combined with electronic air suspension that can adjust ride height according to the driving situation, this can be increased to stabilize the vehicle on rough roads, or decreased for high-speed driving to improve power and stability.
By moving the reduction gear to the wheel hub, Uni Wheel’s high reduction ratio delivers a significant torque output and allows for a more compact electric motor. With independent control of up to four efficient electric drive units, Uni Wheel also allows for unprecedented levels of torque vectoring to boost dynamic ability and deliver high levels of steering and driving stability.
More efficiency, more interior space
The Uni Wheel concept frees up space within a vehicle that was previously unavailable to users. By relocating many components of the drive system to the wheel hub and downsizing the electric motor with no impact on performance, the extra space made available within the vehicle body can be utilized as additional cargo room, such as a larger trunk or a ‘frunk’.
It’s also possible to move away from conventional seating arrangements designed around the driver, creating new interior layouts and designs for the era of fully autonomous driving. Utilizing this space to improve battery capacity can also improve driving range, meaning users can achieve the range of a large EV without the physical size of the vehicle growing.
The developments Uni Wheel allows will also significantly increase passenger space. EV batteries are conventionally located low down in a vehicle’s body, which requires a raised ride height, often reducing passenger space by the volume of the battery. However, Uni Wheel optimizes battery packaging, with the loss of passenger space minimized.
This will be a valuable feature for PBVs, which need to maximize interior space by offering a low, flat-floor design. The flat-floor platform enabled by Uni Wheel allows for strong flexibility and scalability when it comes to PBVs, enabling the design of various body types depending on the intended use case.

“Every year we are fortunate enough to get to build a SEMA special project vehicle. With the return of the Land Cruiser to the U.S. Market, it only made sense to build a rock crawler, so this is our take on a 1966 Toyota FJ45 Pickup Truck,” said Marty Schwerter, Toyota Motorsports garage team manager. “At first it was referred to loosely as ‘The Unstoppable FJ,’ but by the time it was done, it was a beastly vehicle, and so the team started referring to it as the ‘FJ Bruiser.’” Schwerter and his team crushed the build, creating a “King of The Hammers”-style classic FJ that checks all the extreme performance boxes.
The team’s first call was to Toyota Racing Development in Costa Mesa, Calif. This build needed more than just a loud bark to live up to its extreme performance mandate, so they secured a modified version of Toyota’s current TRD, 358 cu.in. V8 NASCAR® Cup Car powerplant, which produces 725 horsepower. A MagnaFlow® exhaust delivers the engine’s intimidating exhaust note, and power is transferred by way of a 3-speed automatic race-built Rancho Drivetrain Engineering® transmission.
In true old school brawn fashion, FJ Bruiser remains a solid axle vehicle. Purpose built with “unstoppable” as a stipulation on its build sheet, the driveline features front and rear Currie® differentials and an Advanced Adapter Atlas® transfer case that provides four 2WD speeds and four 4WD speeds. The drivetrain setup allows the FJ Bruiser to crawl at 12 mph revving to 7,000 rpm in the lowest gear and reach speeds of up to 165 mph at that same 7,000 rpm engine speed in highest gear.
Should ground clearance ever become an issue, the team replaced the center skid plate with a tank-like track system that can be used to power out of any high centered situation. The CAMSO® track is controlled from the cockpit, so the driver can stay securely seated; no need to unstrap and find something to tie off the winch. Tank mode can be activated with the push of a button.
Attention then shifted to the creation of functional body work while retaining the classic FJ lines, an exercise that posed one of the team’s most significant challenges: fitting modern, terrain-conquering technology into and onto a relatively space-constrained chassis. The team fabricated a full tube chassis and roll cage, then mated the body to the new, more rigid custom frame. Next they added a full trailing arm suspension with Fox® shocks and Eibach® springs. At the corners, 42-inch BF Goodrich® Krawler T/A KX tires mounted to 20-inch Method® Beadlock wheels, which at full bump travel, put the tires about halfway up the windshield line.

At market launch, the new AMG GT Coupé will be launched with two performance levels of the AMG 4.0‑litre V8 biturbo engine. The engines are assembled entirely by hand at the company's site in Affalterbach according to the "One Man, One Engine" principle. In the top model GT 63 4MATIC+ (combined fuel consumption 14.1 l/100 km, combined CO₂ emissions 319 g/km)[2], the engine delivers 430 kW (585 hp) and provides a maximum torque of 800 Nm over a wide engine speed range from 2,500 to 4,500 rpm. Accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h takes just 3.2 seconds, and the top speed is 315 km/h. In the GT 55 4MATIC+ (combined fuel consumption 14.1 l/100 km, combined CO₂ emissions 319 g/km), the V8 unit develops an output of 350 kW (476 hp) and a maximum torque of 700 Nm. The sprint from zero to 100 km/h takes 3.9 seconds, and the top speed is 295 km/h.
For use in the AMG GT Coupé, the engine received a new oil pan, repositioned intercooler, and active crankcase ventilation. The inlet and outlet ports have been optimised for more effective gas exchange and the exhaust gas routing for the catalytic converter box and Otto particle filter has been enlarged. The developers achieved the additional output of the AMG GT 63 4MATIC+ Coupé primarily through higher boost pressure and greater air throughput as well as modified engine software. All in all, the eight-cylinder impresses with its extraordinary power development with powerful boost in all engine speed ranges, combined with the highest possible efficiency for low consumption and emission values.
The concept car fits in with the Italian super sports company's "Direzione Cor Tauri" strategy and its roadmap towards decarbonization and electrification announced in 2021: following presentation of the V12 plug-in hybrid Revuelto, the Lanzador gives an insight into the series model to be built from 2028. "With the fourth model concept, we are opening a new car segment: the Ultra GT. This will offer customers a new, unparalleled Lamborghini driving experience thanks to pioneering technologies," said Stephan Winkelmann, Chairman and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini.
The concept car combines the inherent performance of a Lamborghini super sports car with an enhanced fun-to-drive personality, plus the versatility of a car that is drivable daily: the Lanzador creates an original driving experience for a rising cluster of 'tech forerunner' customers.
Automobili Lamborghini committed more than two years ago to presenting a high-performance, electrified Lamborghini within this decade that remains true to the heart and soul of the brand. The all-electric concept car is a Gran Turismo with a surprising body style, entirely new proportions and unparalleled on-board experience via new infotainment features, and a pure design combining ultra high-performance elements of the Revuelto super sports car and the animated versatility of an Urus.
A high specific power electric motor on each axle ensures permanent all-electric drive in every condition, surface and driving style and a peak power of over one megawatt. The all-wheel drive also offers active e-torque vectoring on the rear axle for particularly dynamic cornering behavior, extremely finely tuned and adapted for every situation. The energy is provided by a new generation high-performance battery, which also ensures a long range. "For us, electrification does not mean a restriction, but an intelligent opportunity to develop more performance and drivability," says Rouven Mohr, Lamborghini's Chief Technical Officer. There will therefore be no compromises in terms of power, driving pleasure and performance: this is an all-electric Lamborghini that customers can enjoy every day.
Automatic Lane Change, or ALC, is already available in C-Class, E-Class and S-Class, as well as all Mercedes‑Benz EQ series vehicles being sold in the U.S. and Canada.
The ALC function is an integral part of Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC with Active Steering Assist. If a slower vehicle is driving ahead, the vehicle can initiate a lane change itself in the speed range of 80‑140 km/h and overtake completely automatically if lane markings are detected and sufficient clearance is available. The prerequisite is a road with a speed limit and the vehicle being equipped with MBUX Navigation. The sophisticated system requires no further impulse from the driver to execute the automatic lane change.
With active route guidance, the system also assists in navigating exits and changing highways. Since the responsibility in an SAE-Level 2 system remains with the driver even during the automatic lane change, Mercedes-Benz has deliberately decided that hands must remain on the steering wheel. Safety is Mercedes‑Benz's top priority, and this includes ensuring that there is no confusion caused by false expectations, for example.

Technology highlights include a new battery concept featuring high-performance liquid-cooled cylindrical cells with a novel cell chemistry. Once more, the extensive knowledge of the motorsport experts from Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrain in Brixworth found its way into this promising concept for future performance-oriented batteries. Aside from that, the Vision One-Eleven features two exceptionally powerful and advanced axial-flux motors from YASA. Mercedes-Benz is developing this technology together with YASA to large scale production maturity for its next-generation electric drives. YASA is a British electric-motor specialist based in Oxford and has been a 100-percent subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz AG since July 2021. The company has thus secured access to a unique future technology that has the potential to take electric mobility to a new level of performance.
"Axial-flux motors are significantly lighter and more compact, yet more powerful than comparable radial-flux motors currently used in 99 percent of all electric cars. In an axial-flux motor, the electromagnetic flow runs parallel to the motor's rotational axis, which is highly efficient. In a radial-flux motor, the flow runs perpendicular to the rotational axis. Compared to radial-flux motors, they have considerably higher and more enduring power reserves, which delivers a whole new level of performance." Tim Woolmer, Founder and Chief Technology Officer of YASA
Alongside its power and torque density, another major benefit is the narrow package, which reduces both its weight and dimensions. The weight of an axial-flux motor is just one third of that of current electric motors with the same power output. At the same time, it requires just one-third of the space occupied by a radial-flux motor. This opens up completely new options for engineers as well as new freedoms in the design of an electric vehicle as demonstrated by the Vision One-Eleven.
The future generation of YASA axial-flux motors will be produced at the Mercedes-Benz Berlin-Marienfelde plant. The motors manufactured there will be at the heart of the forthcoming powertrain for the performance segment.
