As I don't have a TR909 and rarely use samples, I'm going for percussion on the Boss RC505MkII which has an 808-909 drum kit on board. For the rest, we're arping the day away at about 170 bpm with the following:

Construction Zone HWJ Weekend Challenge with Moog One, Kurzweil K2700 and Boss RC505-MkII

Getsemani Music 2025-08-30 | This weekend's challenge:

"Heavy construction. The sounds of construction and industry are everywhere. From droning engines to wailing sirens, pounding hammers to whirring gears - these sounds are often thought of as unpleasant, but can you discover the beauty in them?
There are two ways to do this weekend’s challenge, depending on your setup. The first option is to make a jam using samples from field recordings, construction sounds etc. You can make them yourself or find them online (I’ll post a couple of links in a comment). Make sure the recordings you use are copyright free. If you don’t have a sampler in your setup, the second option is to make a jam inspired by this sort of soundscape. Maybe you can make a beat sounding like an engine? Maybe some clever sound design will make a synth sound like a drill? Get creative.
Whichever way you do this challenge, focus on beauty. The challenge is to make a beautiful jam out of ugly sounds."

Moog One Firmware 1.8.1: Most Preset Issues Fixed

Getsemani Music 2025-08-27 | Moog One firmware update 1.8.0 was released on August 19th and included 15 fixes, most related to improvements in the ability to use MIDI on the Moog One which previously had never been fully integrated. It didn't take long before several users started noticing new issues, the most significant of which is that many presets had been rendered unusable in the process. With the release of firmware update 1.8.1 on August 27th, most of the preset issues have been fixed.

The root cause was that some of the new code related to updating MIDI Latch functionality inadvertently trampled oscillator sync setting which severely affected many patches rendering the update unusable, especially for those users not using the new MIDI functions. There are still a small number of patches that still have issues, and Moog is still working on identifying the cause in time to include it with 1.8.2 which is now being worked. (The option of returning to firmware 1.5 is still easily accomplished if the remaining issues affect you.)

Thanks to Geert Bevin at Moog Music for jumping in immediately to correct the most serious issues with the 1.8.0 release and to Matt Urmenyi, the sound designer for all the patches in this video for recognizing the problem and sounding the alarms to make this fix a priority!

A Jam from Scratch: HWJ Challenge with Moog Matriarch, Voyager and Model D, and Arturia Drumbrute

Getsemani Music 2025-08-08 | This weekend's challenge was the annual "create a jam from scratch." So in this video, you'll once again get to see my workflow on how an idea can develop.

We started with a factory preset on the Drumbrute and solo's the kicks until we got things moving. Next we plugging in the cables to send the Drumbrutes clock to the Grandmother and Matriarch so the arps would stay in sync.

Next came dialing in the Grandmother to do bass and the Matriarch for more melodic arps. Finally we dialed in the Model D for lead and got everything running. After a little more fine tuning to get the levels right, we did a short jam for proof of concept.

It was all done in one take in a little over 5 minutes (not counting the video editing to put together the feed from the three cameras... that took an extra 2 hours.) The only external effects are just a touch of reverb and delay from Valhalla Supermassive.

Getsemani Music 2025-06-21 | Instructions for this weekends HWJ challenge were virtually nonexistent. The only hints were a short riff featuring an Amen Break and the registration form labeled "Operation Winston Brothers."

So we built an amen break with the Cherry Audio CR78 Drum Machine and Arturia Drumbrute, laid down some bass with the Moog Grandmother, and did some more relaxed bluesy leads with the Moog Matriarch and Cherry Audio Wurlybird 140B.

Friday the 13th Challenge: Moog theremin, One, Grandmother, Matriarch, Arturia Drumbrute, CA Atomika

Getsemani Music 2025-06-14 | This weekend's challenge:

"Today is Friday the Thirteenth. Unlucky for some? Also the name of an extremely successful slasher / horror movie from 1980. This weekend’s challenge is to make a jam that would fit into a film of this type in that era. Scary? Shocking? Tense? Nervous? Making us jump? Shocking? Mysterious? Don’t forget, the film in question was made in 1980 so bonus kudos for any 80s sounds you can squeeze in! Time to make us hide behind a sofa that is adorned with geometric patterns and bold colours!"

What we did:
For this challenge, I needed a little help, so I put my grandson Sam (age 6) to work on my theremin and Moog One. I filled in with the Moog Grandmother on bass and leads on the Moog Matriarch. Bells at the beginning were done with a Cherry Audio Atomika. The beating heart was done on the Arturia Drumbrute.

The Plants Part 3 - The Earwormhole
While the plant-et of the Ewoks was in a state of calm, A black hole quietly moved through space, slowly approaching the little rock they called the moon of Endor. The planet was swept away into the void but our understanding of black holes was wildly wrong.
As the Ewoks passed through the event horizon, they noticed a hypnotic, rhythmic sound emanating and slightly reverberating around through the woods. The sun they gained warmth and light from had disappeared and all that lit their path was strobed shadows through the trees, coming from the light that traveled along side the moon.
While in a lost scientific platform, this new discovery known as an earwormhole had given birth to a technical number, shortened to "Tech. No. 303" by the imperial scientist remnants left after the battle of Endor.
This week, we ask you to break out your inner kicklords and make some thumping techno with a slight twist, make it organic, like the trees waving while hurtling through the seldom witnessed space phenomenon. Lets make them furry lil bastards dance as they descend into the unknown!

2025 Jamuary 32: Is My Clock/Calendar Broken? with Moog Matriarch, Voyager, and Arturia Drumbrute

Getsemani Music 2025-02-02 | This video serves two roles: It represents the Bonus track for JAMuary (number 32 in the 31 day series) and it is entered into one of the strangest weekend challenges the Hardware Jams Group has ever come up with.

The “Double or Half” challenge was to create a song 3½ minutes long. During the stream through on Monday February 3rd, at the discretion of the hosts, it will be played either at half speed (making it a 7 minute song) or at double speed, which would shred through in under two minutes.

My idea to turn it completely insane was to do this 3½ minute song in three sections. One portion was done at 100bpm and left that way. The second part was recorded playing at 50bpm and doubled to make the rhythm continue at 100bpm. The third section was recorded at 200bpm and played back at half speed, again taking it back to 100bpm.

So if HWJ decides to play it at 2x, the apparent bpm will be 200bpm but sections could show me playing riffs at 400bpm. If they play it at half speed, it will appear to be running at 50bpm, but sections could reflect me playing at only 25bpm. You’ll have to check the live stream playback to see what happened, but you can still see all three scenarios in this original video.

When it comes to nature, I usually incorporate birds and squirrels and nice meadow scenes. So this year I wanted to do something different. So we’re going under water incorporating the sound of water cascading over waterfalls, the sound of racing dolphins, and that nice low rumble you get when you’re deep underwater, covered with a nice ambient melody provided by three Moog powerhouses.

If you’re familiar with my studio, it’s jam packed with heavy hardware synths, and as I’m approaching age 70, hauling them around is not really an option. So for my desert island adventure, I’m only taking my MacBook Pro and an Arturia Keystep Pro. That gives me the potential to run on batteries with access to all my soft-synths without requiring medical attention.
