Jump/ErrorAnother new ZX Spectrum release with my music - Rat-A-Tat by Joesoft This is the full main theme I composed specifically for it, specially mixed and mastered for headphones users
Concept, Code and Graphics by John Davies Original AY Music by Pedro Pimenta Beautiful Loading Screen by Andy Green Written using The Amazing AGDx Mini+
The Story
Ratty always wanted to visit London and one day he got the chance to hitch a ride on a Jumbo out of Manchester, and he took it. Unfortunately the decision to stow away for free in the cargo hold turned out to be the worst decision he'd ever made. During a terrible storm the cargo doors of the plane blew open and Ratty and his suitcase tumbled out of the plane. Ratty parachuted to safety but his tat (aka. luggage) had been scattered all over the city.
He'd never visited London before but now Ratty was required to explore every nook and cranny of the huge capital in an effort to recover all of his lost items. Not great timing as his tummy was rumbling and he was so very hungry, having not had chance to scoff an airport meal, being a stow away and all.
Can you help Ratty recover all his luggage before the poor mite pops his clogs due to cheez needz?
The Game
Rat-a-Tat is a tiny sprite platform game where you must go on several sorties through London looking to find your lost luggage, avoiding various nasties and keeping your tummy topped up with enough cheez to last till the end of each trip.
Don't worry if you miss any items as you can always visit the same areas along another search route. Don't forget you are a tough cookie but also a terrible swimmer with a weakness for cheez.

Another great project that I was very happy to be a part of, this time going out of the usual Mr. Hair adventures following a new character - Super Hero Steve. The game was developed to promote RetCon 2023, a retrogaming convention hosted in London around the Halloween period, hence the theme. A small print run was made for exclusive distribution inside the event and after that Teknamic did a second edition available to the general public.
Regarding the music, the main theme is a funky danceable tune, not too far from what I've been doing for other games like Kitty Katakombs or Rat-a-Tat, but this time with a creepy, spooky twist. The menu theme was originally one of the sketches I wrote for the main theme, but we felt it wasn't very adequate, so we ended up using it for the menu. As for the rest, there's not much to say, except that the Game Over tune is a rework of one I've done for Project ZX 1.5, a game by Richard Langford.
The story goes like this: Super Hero Steve is your host for the much anticipated Retro Convention, full of exciting computers, consoles and arcade machines. A fantastic day is expected to be enjoyed by all, but there's one tiny problem... the venue is haunted by mischievous and pesky ghouls. They are not best pleased about having their home invaded and are determined to put a stop to the fun. They have snatched and hidden all the awesome retro gear, locked the main gates and thrown away the key. The success of the event up to you now. Dodge the ghosts' devilish traps, find all the hidden items, retrieve the gate key and open everything up before everyone arrives. The clock is ticking!

Out of a series of videos I found several scenes that really appealed to me and thought of making a video for a song of mine. So, from a teenager's party in Porto in the 1980's where they were drinking, smoking and playing around with a camera after some heavily edited scenes I got this video. But then I noticed one of the songs I was listening to while editing just fit perfectly with these scenes, so I scrapped the original idea and after further editing made an unofficial videoclip for this great song by Keluar. This is not the kind of content I usually do for my channel, but I think this just looked to nice not to share...
Hope you like it! I love repurposing old recordings, so if there's interest I may do other videos like this.
P.S.: I have no idea who are the people in this recording, but I'd love to meet them after all these years. The original one was recorded by a creepy teen who kept filming the legs of this girl trying to get a glimpse of something, but I think after editing all those parts out, even with all the cuts, it still looks very cool. Hoping that this reworked video gives these girls the dignity they deserve and a different view into their past.

This is a 1 level demo that was born out of my challenge to Marco Vale to develop a ZX Spectrum for a Game Jam. I was learning AGD programming in 2020 so I used my basic knowledge to build the fundamental part of the game to which Marco added his art. Then, having reached my limits I reached out to some friends like Lee Stevenson who gave me tips on how to improve my code. Allan Turvey supplied beta versions of some of his recent AGDx developments and gave me some tips. Finally Jaime stepped in and totally rewrote my code, also helping me add the final more complicated elements - shooting a weapon, particle effects and having a vault with a locked door that would only open with a key. Finally I decided to abandon this project as I feel like I've added everything I could and there aren't enough original elements on the game's design to justify developing it further and releasing it. I know if I end up releasing a game with such a basic premise, design and gameplay it will most likely get totally forgotten on the sea of AGD-developed games. It was however a valuable lesson that showed me that probably ZX Spectrum game development shouldn't be in my future plans...Super Hair 128k Theme Song w/ GameplayJump/Error2021-06-14 | The main song for this game started as a present for Game Dev PT's (portuguese game developer community) Secret Santa 2020. The beggining of the song is loosely inspired by João Costa's work for Out of Line, PS4, Xbox One and PC game by Nerd Monkeys and then I just transformed it into something of my own. Originally this was a gift to Mafalda Duarte, producer/managing director at Nerd Monkeys, whose main work at the time was to direct this game.
After this event I talked to Lee Stevenson as I felt this song would fit with one of his games, as they have been the ones where I risk or try to innovate the most with very good results. Knowing about his Super Hair game, still in development I gave it a final polish and it was done! So far I think this is the most "show-off" of my songs, as it is where I try to show most of the different techniques I've learned over the last years and I feel this might be a good piece just to show how much you can bend the AY Chip's limitations to your advantage.

The songs were composed between February and March 2019 and because of some issues the game's release had to be postponed. Now that it's finally out there, I've uploaded all of the songs to my Bandcamp and made this video to show a bit of (badly played) gameplay.
This is one of my first "bigger" projects, a full soundtrack made for a Jaime Grilo game to be published with the luso-brazilian Espectro Magazine. On my first track, the one played during the game, I tried following a trance-like rhythm, inspired by a recommendation by André Leão, the real person who inspired the game. Then, seeing as Jaime had been working with some of the best composers in the field in previous games, I tried doing my best to not disappoint him and this hard work paid off, as considering how early on I did it, it has aged quite well.
The other songs are covers of famous songs, also suggested by André, that really show my knowledge of composing for the ZX Spectrum at the time. Fortunately I've learned a lot more and my latest covers are much more interesting than these, but this album can serve as a memory, one more step on the ladder I'm still following towards my goal of being a professional composer.
And my Patreon here, where you can support me and have an exclusive sneak peek every week of what I'm working on:

Not particularly proud of it, but considering how new is the whole music making process for the PC Speaker is for me, it turned out quite ok. I hope to keep learning and in the future be able to produce other works that can take better advantage of the Speaker's limited resources, as for now, this was the best I could do.

Ideally I would've composed a different song for each system, using it's resources and limitations to my advantage, but I wanted to maintain some unity and not stray too far away from the original, keeping the same spirit. Still, I am pretty proud of it, even if it's not one of the best I've made...

It was a difficult challenge, specially because most online covers are missing a few notes or haven't gotten all of the notes right and I had to transcribe a lot just by ear.
This wasn't made specifically for any game (yet), but I hope it will be used some day soon...

Take care and don't forget to share it with your friends if you liked it.On n Off - Tufty (Real ZX Spectrum recording)Jump/Error2020-05-27 | The winning song of the beeper music compo in DiHalt Lite 2020.
On n' Off was composed using Shiru's Phaser 3 engine and later Tufty added a tongue in cheek animation made by him, poking fun at the long-lasting "war" between Sinclair and Commodore fans.
Since Rich first showed me his song, while it was still a work in progress, I was immediatly drawn to it. It really surprised me how he used the beeper to make a really nice danceable tune. As he is one of my favourite artists making music for the Spectrum I thought of making a video showing a real Spectrum running his song live.
Hopefully, if there is enough interest, in the future I will showcase some other favourite artists of mine in this channel.

This song was developed between late 2016 and early 2017, as back then my time was not much and I struggled with some issues. As probably most of you know, I'm a self-taught musician and this was my first real paid job, so despite the problems I did the best I could to impress my client and still today I love this song.

Take care and don't forget to share it with your friends if you liked it.Oops!... I Did It Again (ZX Spectrum Remix)Jump/Error2020-01-24 | Original song by Britney Spears, with an instrumental remixed by Oleg Nikitin (n1k-0) and composed on a ZX Spectrum 128k. I've picked up his project, edited it a little to complement the voice better, then picked up the acapella sped it up, cut it in parts and sincronized it with the music. Then I did some screens in ZX Paintbrush and put it all together for you. So, yes it's not totally true that this is 100% sound from the Spectrum, but it wouldn't be impossible also to do something like that.
I know some people don't like this song very much, but if you listen to this amazing Spectrum version, I think you will look at it differently. At least I did!
I really hope the author doesn't mind that I did this, if you ever see my video - I really love your work, so this just a way I thought of bringing it to a bigger audience. I thought their work was great but really missed the sound, so during this week I've been adding little by little all the sounds you hear.
I should also say that this is my first serious sound work, aside from some experiences in game jams and my goal here was to learn how to do sound design by myself, the same way I learn how to compose, just by working on it.
All of the software I used is open source (OpenShot Video Editor, and Audacity) and all of the sounds used here come from Freesound.org users.
List of sounds used, let's hope I won't forget anyone:

Just a note, Wavenoid has no video, because it is a two player only game and I don't have any footage available that I can use. Also the song I made for Luckyshot is supposed to be for the menu or credits, as so, I didn't use any gameplay as the rhythm of the game wouldn't fit my music.ZX Spectrum Demo Reel - JumperrorJump/Error2019-09-11 | This video was made specially for my Patreon page, which you can find here: patreon.com/jumperror
