When the company’s founder Robert Kaege read an article about the first Singer 911 in the early 2000s, his interest was piqued. As the owner of a Porsche repair facility, he had both the knowledge and a donor car to build a car in his vision. Kaege used the 993 as a base thanks to its improved rear suspension, stiffer chassis and standard 6-speed manual transmission. In 2005 the Elise came stateside, and forever changed the trajectory of Lotus in the United States. Powered by a 1.8-liter Toyota inline-4, the Elise was one of the most popular new sports cars of the era and became the go-to choice for the dedicated driving enthusiast. This 2008 Lotus Elise California Edition is from the final year of production and is one of just 50 special editions produced towards the end of US production. Of those 50 cars, 25 were produced in the color seen on this car- Saffron Yellow, where the other 25 were painted in Ardent Red. The California Edition features some unique exterior styling updates including a silver painted front grille, body-colored side gills in the vent area, and body-colored rear engine panel louvers. Powering the Elise is the previously mentioned 1.8-liter Toyota DOHC inline-4. This engine benefits from a Yamaha-designed head with variable valve timing. It produces 189 horsepower and will happily rev to well over 8,000 rpm. Although this doesn’t sound like a ton, with a sub-2,000 lb curb weight, the car will run from 0-60 in less than 5 seconds and can achieve over 150 mph on the top end.As the automotive world moves more towards alternative fuels and increased safety features, it is likely that we will never see a car like the Elise again. The introduction of the 993 Turbo in 1995 was the dawn of a new era for the Porsche 911. Gone was the single-turbo, rear wheel drive excitement of the 930 and 964 Turbo, and in its place, smooth twin-turbocharged power and planted, confidence-inspiring all-wheel drive. These were all pluses from a usability standpoint, but the car left something to be desired for the driving purist. During the 993 generation, Porsche debuted a new model- the GT2- which combined all of the speed and power of a 993 Turbo with reduced weight and rear wheel drive for the ultimate air-cooled thrill ride. The GT2 was initially produced as a homologation car, but starting with the 996, it became more of a “full production” 911- albeit always in extremely small numbers. With the introduction of the 997 in 2005, the GT2 variant was shown two years later at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show.
