Was Jesus a Christian - Dr. Lori Baron Wycliffe College at the University of Toronto 2023-04-04 | “Was Jesus a Christian?” is an intentionally provocative take on the question of the underlying Jewish context in which Jesus was born and raised. How Israel relates to the Church, and ultimately how Christians relate to Jewish people, has been a topic of conversation in the church and the academy for millennia. How Jesus viewed himself in light of Jewish salvation-history becomes an important piece of the conversation. Curses, Laments and Violence: The Old Testament as a Resource for the Church? - Lissa Wray Beal Wycliffe College at the University of Toronto 2022-12-02 | Throughout its history, Christianity’s relationship to the Old Testament (Hebrew Scriptures) has been approached in many ways. It is not surprising that with passages that justify violence and the invocation of curses upon one’s enemies that many have found it antithetical to a Christian message of love for your neighbour and universal forgiveness. Many ancient and modern readers have either ignored it, or outright rejected it due to its seeming incongruence with a vision of the Kingdom of God in Christ. It is not surprising that far fewer sermons are preached on Sundays based on Old Testament texts. Is this move warranted, or is it possible to redeem the stories and message of the Old Testament and see it as essential to a fuller understanding of God and his relation to His people? Interdisciplinary - For the Patients Good? Two Rival Accounts of Medicine - Farr Curlin Wycliffe College at the University of Toronto 2022-06-23 | “What it means to be human?” is one of the enduring questions that underscores our search to find meaning in our lives and govern how we relate to one another in our society. How this question is answered has varied throughout human history and the distinctions in the answers have only proliferated in our current age. As our society becomes more complex, our scientific understanding of our biology becomes more comprehensive, and our technologies are increasingly able to augment our existence, our ability to answer this question and, maybe, more importantly, our ability to navigate the practical implications of this understanding has become progressively more difficult. Traditional theological perspectives and ethical approaches need to re-engage these changes while at the same time, the applications of these new technological and social innovations need to be understood in theological and ethical perspectives. "How can science inform our Christian anthropology and practice of ministry?" and "How does a Christian theological vision create goals and limits for medicine and science?" Engaging the Parables of Jesus - Klyne Snodgrass and Stephen Chester Wycliffe College at the University of Toronto 2021-05-12 | In reading the bible or preaching we often gravitate towards the Parables of Jesus. These wonderfully rich stories which make up a significant portion of the Gospels are lively, edifying and memorable. Yet, as we reflect on these stories it doesn’t take long before we realize that they aren’t quite as straightforward as they might seem. Some of the parables are simply confusing even if they are full of imaginative power.This year for Preaching Day we have invited Professor Klyne Snodgrass to join us and Professor Stephen Chester (Lord and Lady Coggan Professor of New Testament) as we explore the parables. Klyne is Emeritus Professor of New Testament at North Park Theological Seminary where he taught for forty-one years. The author of numerous books, he is recognized particularly for his work on the parables of Jesus. Stories with Intent: A Comprehensive Guide to the Parables of Jesus was the winner of the 2009 Christianity Today award for Biblical Studies. The Journal of Theological Studies says:“Probably few books that claim the description ‘comprehensive’ live up to the accolade. The Brazos Theological Commentary on the Bible enlists leading theologians to read and interpret Scripture for the twenty-first century, just as the church fathers, the Reformers, and other Orthodox Christians did for their times and places. Rusty Reno is the Series founder and Editor-in-chief of Brazos Theological Commentary on the Bible. He is the author of the commentary on the book of Genesis in the Brazos Theological Commentary series (2010) Laura A. Smit is Professor of Theology at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI, where she has been teaching since 1999. Pierce completed her PhD in 2017 and published her thesis, Divine Discourse in the Epistle to the Hebrews, with Cambridge University Press in 2020 in the SNTSMS series. For university he went to read Law at Oxford, then he studied Divinity at Aberdeen and gained his PhD in Patristics at Cambridge University.
