A Cult Classic Amp in Pedal Form | Jackson Audio x Silvertone Twin Twelve 1484 Pedal

Ambient Endeavors 2023-01-06 | Silvertone is back, and together with Jackson Audio captured the magic of the Twin Twelve amplifier in pedal form. The Twin Twelve delivers the unique snarl and sparkle of the Silvertone 1484 and possesses impressive amp-like feel and dynamics.

The vintage Silvertone 1484 amps are iconic, quirky and unique - delivering that raw, snarly grit and warm fuzzy overdrive used by the likes of Jack White, Beck, The Black Keys, and many others. Jackson Audio diligently recreated the sounds and feel of the amp (minus the tremolo and reverb circuits) in pedal form and it is fantastic.

I put the Twin Twelve through its paces in the opening sketch, leveraging both its warm cleans and rich, raw saturation. Enjoy the piece and check out the extended sound samples at the end, featuring my Jennings Voyager Deluxe, Meris Mercury7 Reverb and UA Ruby and Dream amps.

What a year. I didn't do a Top Pedals video or a year/gear in review feature, but if I had, a lot of this would end up on it. The Line6 DL4 MKII was perhaps my favorite project to get to work on this year. Such an iconic pedal, and the re-boot boasts so many incredible new sounds and REVERBS making it wildly versatile. Here I'm using it for the base loop layer, and toggling it into reverse toward the end for an "alternate" loop texture.

Strymon released a bunch of V2s of their beloved single pedals in 2022, and I got to check out the new El Capistan. I've long loved the character of this delay, and the enhanced control interface and stereo input toggle make it even more convenient. Here I'm using it after the DL4's loop to add a tape-like quality, where I can adjust wow&flutter and tape age throughout. Watch to the end to hear how you can set the El Cap to full wet and dial up some serious tape degradation. I'm also running the BigSky before the looper for ambient swells.

Rounding out the chain is the venerable pair of Universal Audio maps - Dream and Ruby. I fell in love with the Dream almost immediately and had to check out the Ruby. After a shot while with it, it became by favorite of the two, but running both in stereo gives you the best of both worlds! More explorations on blending and pairing them to come in 2023 - all made easy by the Pinstripe Pedals DISO+ POLREV box.

Finally... this guitar! The Ambient Select Espada from Balaguer was a landmark project for me this year. Getting to help spec out and choose my color for this new line was such a cool experience, and the guitar came out incredibly. Here I'm almost exclusively using it with the coil-tap engaged. The single coil tones are really nice for clean ambient pieces like this, and knowing you have a rich, full humbucker sound if needed with just a tap of the knob is just so great. Kudos for Balaguer for dialing these guitars in at a killer price point.

Flower Pedals Sunflower Stereo Tremolo | Ambient Sketch feat. UA Dream/Ruby Stereo Rig

Ambient Endeavors 2022-12-20 | Tremolo is one of those effects that I come back to every so often and realize I forgot what I was missing. At its simplest form, trem gives that nice bounce and adds some dimension to your playing without getting too *weird*. STEREO tremolo is an entirely new adventure though, and the Flower Pedals Sunflower Deluxe is an exceptional example.

I love the width the Sunflower Deluxe's stereo image, giving you these wide moving volume sways. Both traditional and harmonic tremolo sounds are fantastic in this one, and you get so many cool options like manual ramping and drift (automated ramping) multi-speed tremolo settings, various waveforms and a cool random mode. It really feels like the last trem you'd have to buy. Kudos to Flower Pedals for making a compact, killer sounding, feature-rich tremolo - and thanks for sending it over for me to check out!

I plopped it right in the middle of this brand new stereo board build and am running a Strymon El Capistan v2 and Meris Mercury7 in stereo after it. This also marks the maiden voyage with the stereo pair of Universal Audio Dream and Ruby 63 amps and I'm having a lot of fun pairing those two flavors. Finally, the Pinstripe Pedals DISO+ POLREV stereo DI is sending the amps onto my Focusrite 18i20 and into REAPER DAW. Since the Ruby is out of phase, the POLREV makes it easy to correct that right at the pedal board. ...but more on that later.

A great sounding Gretsch for under $1K!? | Gretsch G5422TG Electromatic Demo & Review

Ambient Endeavors 2022-12-13 | Some day I’ll own a Falcon, but for now the Gretsch 5422TG is scratching my Gretsch itch. Earlier this year, Gretsch refreshed their Electromatic line of guitars and included this beautiful Orange Satin G5422TG in the lineup. I was skeptical, as my prior experience with Electromatics wasn't *great* BUT this guitar quickly showed itself as a completely different Electromatic than I was remembering.

Beautiful aesthetics, a comfy slimmer double-cut body, and fantastic sounding Filter’Tron picks make this guitar a compelling option for anyone looking to try out a Gretsch hollow body without diving in to the deep end.

EAE Citadel - Your new favorite Marshall Plexi from Electronic Audio Experiments?!

Ambient Endeavors 2022-12-08 | EAE doesn't miss, and the Citadel is no exception. The Citadel captures the feel and tones of early plexis, with that low-mid warmth and top end sparkle. It draws from the Electronic Audio Experiments model feT schema, adapted to the beloved British circuits. While it holds its own as a preamp-style overdrive, because John designed this to mimic both pre- and power amp sections it also works well as a "pseudo amp" toward the end of your chain.

I've always been more of a diamond grill cloth guy when it comes to the iconic British sounds of the 60s, but MAN, this new box from EAE is making a strong case for me to add a Marshall to the fold. But for now, the Citadel is scratching the itch!

In this sketch I wanted to explore the range of tones, from clean to mean and feel like the Citadel executed them all wonderfully. The light ambient layers came through with a really nice sparkle, thanks to the bright channel and 3 band tone stack. Playing my Balaguer Ambient Select Espada gave flexibility between PAF-style humbucker tones and split coil tones, both of which blended well with what the Citadel was doing.

From there I added some ambience with the perennial favorites Strymon El Capistan v2, Hologram Microcosm, and GFI Specular Tempus. For the lead layers, I tried hitting the "front end" of the Citadel with a Benson Germanium boost and it added some nice saturation.

If you're in the market for the best Marshall in a box or just needing another flavor of gain to add to your arsenal, the Citadel is a worthy contender. If heavier, downtrend tones are more your flavor, check out EAE's model feT, I think you'll enjoy that as well.

Coffee & Loops | Eventide H90, Hologram Microcosm, Strymon El Capistan v2

Ambient Endeavors 2022-12-05 | It's been a while since I sat down for an extended coffee and loops ambient sketch, but the Eventide H90 was inviting it and so I obliged.

I'm still enamored with the preset I created pairing Ultra Tap with the new Wormhole algorithm in parallel. The loop bed here is a reverse loop from Microcosm being fed into H90. The Ultratap side dances with the stuttery movement of the UltraTap algorithm, while the Wormhole drifts and stretches the reverse movement out so beautifully.

For the guitar bits over top, I'm leaning into the pair of Strymon El Cap and Brigadier. Both provide their own unique modulation before being whisked away in the Microcosm and H90.

Many flavors of boost. | Source Audio ZIO & Collider

Ambient Endeavors 2022-12-01 | I'm always amazed at how much I can do with just a couple effects. Source Audio has a way of maximizing efficiency and versatility in a small footprint, and ZIO is no exception. I wired it up with the Source Audio Collider and quickly found some really nice sounds with just this simple pair.

ZIO is an analog front end boost pedal. It first adds a slight "color" to your signal with its four preamp circuits. Each deliver a unique EQ curve to draw out clarity, enhance mid-range, or give a focused studio feel. From there you have the addition of a clean boost which works wonderfully to push your downstream pedals or amp into some grit. You also have a tone toggle to choose bright, medium, or dark overall sound.

In this sketch I was able to make a surprising range of clean and dirty tones just running these 2 pedals into my UA Ruby. The Ruby is a brighter Vox style amp, so I used the E-Plex mode to bring a bit of warmth to the clean guitar parts. It helps massage the bright top end of the Ruby and gave more body to the low-output Jazzmaster pickups.

For leads, I dialed the output up to really push the amp, and selected the Studio setting. This setting delivers a Pultec-style EQ , cutting some low-mids and drawing out clarity in the upper mids.

ZIO is a tidy little front-end workstation that delivers some nice "preset" EQ shaping paired with a fantastic boost. Just a couple adjustments and you can make some nice refinements to your sound.

I kept it super simple with this pedalboard, running the ZIO into the Collider. I'm using some stereo digital delay and plate reverb in the rhythm layer, and then switching to tape echo for some of the lead parts. From there I'm running in stereo into the Universal Audio Ruby, which responded very well to the varying levels of boost it got from ZIO.

I chose the 40th Anniversary Squier Jazzmaster Vintage Edition because of its relatively clear pickups. The ZIO was able to add its own "color" to them.

A distortion with white noise!? Beautiful Noise Exploder Distortion

Ambient Endeavors 2022-11-28 | Here's the thing - I'm wading into heavier sounds and honestly kind of loving it. I blame it in part on my friend @markjohnstonofficial who has decidedly focused in on some incredible post-hardcore feels in his channel. But, back to the pedal...

When Nick at Beautiful Noise reached out to send me this pedal, I excitedly said "yes" before even hearing what it was! Knowing his other creations - namely When the Sun Explodes - I knew whatever he cooked up would be unique and fun. And, well, this thing is a lot of fun. EXPLODER is a wildly versatile distortion with full tone stack AND a white noise circuit. The envelope-controlled white noise can be mixed in sparingly or piled onto your drive sound to a huge wall of sound texture.

Even with the relatively tame Lollar Regal for Jazzmaster pickups in my CIJ Jazzmaster, the Exploder came to life with warm thick saturation or biting snarl. Any I was impressed that it worked well even at more mild overdriven settings.

The clipping options were borrowed in part from WTSE and will be familiar to any shoegaze or noise rock fan using that pedal. They provide 3 very distinct textures of saturation, allowing you to flavor your breakup based on your needs and context.

I didn't even try it on synth or drums, but I'm guessing it would be fantastic. And if you don't care for the white noise or want just a touch of it, you get that control right on the face of the pedal.

In this sketch, we're relying heavily on the Exploder to hear its array of sounds. I'm using a Strymon Brigadier for delay, Hologram Microcosm for the sparkly loop bed underneath everything, and GFI Specular Tempus in 70s Plate for reverb. Still loving the tandem of the Fender Tone Master Princeton Reverb and UA Ruby in stereo, so we'll keep rolling with it!

Another Tele Deluxe!? | Fender American Vintage II 1975 Telecaster Deluxe Unboxing

Ambient Endeavors 2022-11-19 | If you know me you know I'm a huge fan of the Fender Telecaster Deluxe. It was one of my first real electrics that I gigged with, toured with, fell in love with, modified, and ultimately have obsessed over. I've gotten to play the Fender 72 Deluxe Telecaster Reissue, Fender Vintera 70s Tele Deluxe, American Pro II Telecaster Deluxe, and now am excited to unbox the new Fender American Vintage II 75 Telecaster Deluxe.

This new one from the American Vintage II series comes in a beautiful mocha brown, just like my MIM 72 Deluxe RI, but with Fender's re-engineered CuNiFe Wide Range Humbuckers, a true-to-the-original bridge, classic 70s Strat headstock, and all the vibes I've come to love in the Tele Deluxe.

I love the versatility of these guitars; the WRHBs offer nice clarity for cleans, and handle overdrive in a really pleasing way. Unlike some of their Gibson counterparts they were trying to compete with in the 70s, the Deluxe's pickups offer a really nice middle ground for humbucker fans that don't want muddy neck pickups or the heavy bite of a hot bridge pickup. Smooth, warm, sparkly, with a nice touch of compression.

The sounds are coming from a Benson Germanium Boost for a little clean nudge, accented with a touch of delay from the Strymon Brigadier and some dimension from the 70s Plate reverb on the GFI Specular Tempus. For grit I'm adding a Horrothia FX Triage because I can't get over how much I like that pedal.

For amps I'm running the Fender Tone Master Princeton Reverb (with its direct out and cab simulator) paired in stereo with the UA Ruby - it's just so slick and they both sounds great.

The Tele Deluxe was used by some of my favorite indie rock bands back in the day - a setting in which I've used it a ton - but it also delivers some great tones and feel across a smattering of genres, from rock to blues and country.

Squier Jazzmaster Shootout! | Squier 40th Anniversary Vintage Edition vs J Mascis Jazzmaster

Ambient Endeavors 2022-11-16 | Now that the J Mascis Jazzmaster has been discontinued, I wanted to size the new 40th Anniversary Jazzmaster up against it to see if it's a worthy substitute. The 40th Anniversary Vintage Edition Jazzmaster shares much of the same aesthetic with the JMJM, with its light cream body and gold pickguard, but each guitar has nuanced differences that give them their own character. Check out the comparison, review and sounds and let me know which one you'd choose!

I wanted to continue the exploration of the Fender Tone Master Princeton Reverb as well, so we snuck it into this demo, pairing it with the UA Ruby for a stereo guitar rig that yielded great results. When I demo guitars, I want to strip away *most* of the effects I might normally use so you can hear the guitar through. The Benson Germanium Boost remains an "always-on" pedal for me, so it's first in chain and just offering a touch of texture and sparkle. From there I add a touch of plate reverb from the GFI Specular Tempus in 70s Plate - a perennial favorite of mine. Finally, for the dirty sounds I kick on a Horrothia FX Triage, a nice mild preamp/overdrive that adds some pleasing color.

I wrote a pop track! feat. Horrothia FX Type One and Triage

Ambient Endeavors 2022-11-11 | Did I blatantly rip a chord progression from a favorite Charli Adams track and use it as today's inspiration? Yes. And am I glad I did? Absolutely.

I've come to really love pop production, and wanted to challenge myself to step into that headspace this morning.

I decided to lean heavily on the @horrothiaeffects Type One Chorus and Triage preamp, and man was I happy with how they performed. Type One is just 100% my favorite chorus, and added so much to these guitar tracks without getting in the way.

Triage delivered just the right amount of texture and character to bring my Harmony Silhouette to life. And when I cranked it up for the solo I found myself needing nothing else.

The power of simplicity, the *right* effects, and some good melodies tend to yield some of my favorite songs. And this one is an instant favorite. What do you think!?

Lets Turn Some Knobs! - Chase Bliss Generation Loss MKII

Ambient Endeavors 2022-10-24 | One of my favorite ways to spend a morning is brew a pot of coffee and cook up a nice ambient loop to process with some of my favorer pedals. What better pedal to do that with than the new Chase Bliss Generation Loss mkII!

Here I'm walking through each of the unique models in Gen Loss's tape library and turning knobs along the way. Hit play and immerse yourself in the new Gen Loss, or just keep it on in the background while you're working, studying, reading, sleeping...or whatever it is you do :)

The signal chain is simply a loop captured with the Hologram Microcosm and then sent in stereo out to Generation Loss mkII and on to a UA Ruby amp. Toward the end I mix in some of the Mosaic effect on Microcosm to add some shimmery magic to the loop. Enjoy!

Ambient Endeavors 2022-10-19 | How do you Gen Loss? Had my first sit-down with this fantastic new evolution of the CooperFX / Chase Bliss Generation Loss and am LOVING it. The control choices and flexibility to have classic or MKII controls is great. The fact that they sampled so many unique tape devices and contexts makes the playing experience quite exhaustive. Tape textures from dark and gritty to bright and hissy and mangled are all in here. AND. Saturation is its own control, which is just great.

So here's a little chill hop track to show some of the sounds you can get from the Chase Bliss Generation Loss MKII. For this sketch I'm running it in mono before Habit, and then splitting in stereo at Volante.

Dreadbox Raindrops Stereo Delay/Digital Reverb - Sketch & Demo (Guitar)

Ambient Endeavors 2022-10-13 | What's not to like about a turquoise and pink delay called Raindrops?! I've been really curious about these Dreadbox effects so I was excited when they asked me to do a demo for their new delay...er, reverb..er... Raindrops is actually all of the above! At its core, Raindrops is a hybrid delay/digital reverb in true stereo, with 3 unique and really fun modes. I instantly fell in love with analog-feeling modulated delay (Mode 1) - just a fantastic warm analog repeat with dynamic stereo dimension and lovely modulation sway on the trails. Mode 2 features pitch shifted repeats, and Mode 3 incorporates a long tail digital reverb to get some nice ambient atmosphere. Stereo Princetons! - Tone Master Princeton Reverb and 68 Princeton NR

Ambient Endeavors 2022-10-11 | I just had to try this setup before sending the Tone Master Princeton Reverb back. My beloved 68 Princeton NR is a perpetual point of reference for me with amps, and I have to say, the Tone Master keeps up.

For the rhythm guitar, Tone Master is panned hard left with the 68 Princeton running through my UA Ox Box and panned right. I wanted to experiment with different tremolo speeds on each, so the 68 is set to a faster rate while the Tone Master is at a deep, slower trem. The contrast gives a cool effect in stereo.

I'm also running Fender's Space Delay pedal for some washy rhythmic delay that sits in the background nicely. You can hear it creating kind of a tail of feedback on the lead track without running away. Very cool.

The verdict? Well, you can decide and let me know in the comments which you'd pick. It'd be hard to part with my 68, but mostly for sentimental reasons and the fact that it's a vintage piece. Tone-wise it's hard to balk at the Tone Master. The sound and feel is right there. AND you have the immense convenience of a simple XLR line out vs. my $1K OX Box rig.

Vongon Polyphrase Stereo Echo - 70s Digital Delay Vibes For Days

Ambient Endeavors 2022-10-08 | From the moment I plugged in Vongon's Ultrasheer over a year ago I was pining for him to make a stereo delay. Well, that day has come!

Polyphrase is a fantastic stereo echo that - as Vongon is becoming well known for - captures the magic and nostalgia of old 70s studio digital delay units and boxes it up in his beautiful stained wood enclosures and elegant control interface. I loved getting lost in the bounce and swirl of the stereo and ping-pong modes. Vongon's random vibrato modulation is tops for me; the way it adds unexpected flutter to repeats is just magical. And to nobody's surprise, it pairs perfectly - both visually and sonically - with it's predecessor Ultrasheer.

Fender Tone Master Princeton Reverb - Guitar Straight In Sounds

Ambient Endeavors 2022-10-05 | I was really impressed with the direct-in, "clean-ish" tones in my first video, but folks were curious about how the Tone Master Princeton Reverb sounded outside the context of effects. Here I set the amp to 8, dialed in a bit of amp reverb, and mic-d it up with a Cascade Fat Head ribbon mic to capture how the amp sounds in a room. Even at the 1.5 watt mode it was plenty loud in my basement studio, and the dynamics as you dig in or pull back were really nice.

Fjord Fuzz Berserk v2 - Can I Write a Post-Hardcore Track As Good As Mark Johnston?!

Ambient Endeavors 2022-09-29 | Fjord Fuzz is back with a brand spankin' new fuzz and it rips! Berserk v2 is a stripped down, bare bones vintage sounding fuzz pedal that works beautifully in a modern rig.

Controls are simply gain, volume and tone, but within these you can do pretty much anything you need. Get beautiful, classic fuzz tones, loud and punchy lower gain drive, treble boosted lead and even pure pre-cleaned-up
anti-fuzz, a really interesting new approach to gain structuring.

I wanted to see if I could write a post-hardcore track that sounds as good as @markjohnstonofficial who is quickly becoming a legend in these parts (go subscribe to his channel because he's the man). You be the judge!

Songwriting with the new Fender Tone Master Princeton Reverb

Ambient Endeavors 2022-09-26 | I got ahold of one of the new Tone Master Princeton Reverbs from Fender to try and wanted to capture my first real sit-down with it!

It’s no secret that DSP amp modeling just keeps getting better, and this new Fender Tone Master Princeton Reverb is an excellent example of how far it’s come.

I quickly noticed 3 things about this amp when I first plugged it in:
1. It’s super light! At or under 20 lbs; no tubes or big transformers means your back will thank you (I know, I’m getting old).

2. It’s LOUD! They wanted to recreate the sound and feel of a Princeton Reverb, and unlike a lot of non-tube amps I’ve played in the past it has a fullness and presence even at the lower wattage attenuator settings. I’m using the 3w mode here and it’s plenty loud in the room.

3. It sounds and feels GREAT. From the first few chords through adding in the trem and reverb, and even running direct with the cab sim (how I recorded this) it sounds fantastic and feels like a Princeton. Dynamic, with the low-end warmth and top-end sparkle of its tube predecessor. I A/B’d it with my 68 Princeton and the character and response is really really close.

Kudos to Fender for capturing the magic of this classic circuit with some really nice modern conveniences.

Dont Hate on Mono Reverbs - Pladask Draume and Neunaber Immerse mkII

Ambient Endeavors 2022-09-17 | Lots of people complain about reverbs not being in stereo. Just don't throw the baby out with the bath water! What you get by running two separate reverbs in parallel is a more interesting stereo sound; two unique tones to create unique character across the stereo field.

Here I explored putting two reverbs in parallel after my UA Starlight. The Pladask Draume is one of my favorite lo-fi reverbs. I love the modulation and grainy texture you can get - running here in GRAIN mode for a pseudo-particle verb with plenty of depth and modulation. It creates some lovely, gritty, lofi textures heard in the right channel. I paired it with one of my favorite "standard" reverbs - the Neunaber Immerse mkII. The chordal track features the Immerse in W3T mode, while some of the underlying ambient layers have it in shimmer mode for some octave sparkle.

First Look - UA Starlight Delay and Land+Vongon Onset

Ambient Endeavors 2022-09-13 | Getting my bearings again going a handful of days without even picking a guitar up. This morning was one of those littered with false starts, but I wanted to share a “first look” at both the UA Starlight and the Land+Vongon Onset.

The Starlight is set to Analog DMM and I will say it sounds fantastic and strikingly similar to the real thing. I love the textures this mode captures and how interactive the controls are. Admittedly the first 30 mins with the pedal, but I can already tell it’s gonna be fun.

I am not usually excited about auto-swell pedals. Most are kind of a struggle to learn the attack and generally I just find a physical volume pedal more pleasing. BUT. Onset is great. It’s smooth, predictable, controllable, and just feels really good. I can definitely see this finding a spot on my board, especially as I’m constantly reminded of how annoying scratchy pots and broken strings are on VPJRs.

But back to the composition. I finally stumbled upon this chord melody I liked and just ran with it. The Starlight added a nice thickness to each note without getting in the way. Ultrasheer provides all the beautiful reflections, and the pair (set with more repeats and longer decay) work really well downline from Onset to create the billowy swells under everything.
I want toplay this Musicmaster bass on everything I write these days, so I probably will. I just picked it up in a trade and the short scale is so fun! I ended up finding a drum groove I liked in the EZ Drummer Dream Pop catalog, and even threw some Wurli on toward the end for some reinforcement. Hope you enjoy!

Stoked to share that these snazzy Miami Nights Lightspeeds just landed and they’re already finding new homes. Lightspeed is such a killer low to medium gain drive with a really versatile range of tone and gain. It works well as your “always on” pedal or can hang as a first stage overdrive or stacker. …oh, and it sounds great on bass too!

I wanted to show how well it works when layering guitars in a post-rock context. It's by no means a high gain box, but it has such a powerful presence and dynamic breakup that when multi-tracking a few guitars even at lower gain settings you can still get a huge sound.

A quaint little shop in San Clemente, CA that's steps from the beach, Bear Coast is the best place to meet up for a cup before walking the beautiful shores of the Bear Coast.

The Chase Bliss Habit is a beautiful, weird, generative playground for ambient creation. I sat down with it this morning, captured a base layer of sounds, bleeps bloops and stutters, then played a bit over top. Two takes, tracked in stereo and ran through a lush Spatium reverb. Enjoy the sounds as you meditate, work, or rest.

Midweek Meditations with Chase Bliss MOOD & Habit, Hologram Microcosm

Ambient Endeavors 2022-08-03 | Still feeling my way around the new board. There are so many sounds in each of these pedals, and learning them all is one thing, but then learning how they interact is another. Today I swapped in the Chase Bliss Mood at the front of the chain to allow me to add some textural drone layers underneath the sketch. Still loving the Mosaic mode on Microcosm a ton, set to reverse. And Habit, well, I still don't quite know what it's doing, but I'm down for its duck-ins.

I live right down the road from the ZVex Effects headquarters here in Minneapolis, and have been pals with them for some time so this project is long overdue! A "forefather" of sorts to the lofi/nostalgia pedals of today, while remaining a truly unique option for lofi enthusiasts across genres and instruments.

Ambient Endeavors 2022-07-19 | I finally put the finishing touches on my new studio pedalboard and I'm so excited to share a little sneak peek of the layout, pedals, and some ambient sounds from the first couple minutes of playing it. I can already tell I'm going to love the possibilities of the Hologram Microcosm and Chase Bliss Habit for dreamy ambient ear candy and unexpected moments. Having the Strymon Volante for either looping or stereo multi-head delay gives a bunch of flexibility, and I chose to round it out with the GFI Specular Tempus for 70s Plate, Spatium reverb or another end-of-chain delay.

Post-Rock Sounds With The Catalinbread Belle Epoch Deluxe

Ambient Endeavors 2022-07-05 | We all know a good tape echo is great for classic slap back thickening, but how does it sound for some post-rock jams? I'd say it sounds pretty dang good. The Belle Epoch has long been one of my favorite EP tape echo emulator, and the Deluxe version gives you 6 unique modes and added control to dial in your favorite silky tape echo tones with warble, grit, and tons of character. I love the fluttery modulation and the way you can dial in some chewy saturation with the record level control. And it takes overdrive pedals beautifully!

Coffee & Loops - Pladask Baklengs, Strymon Brigadier and DL4 MKII

Ambient Endeavors 2022-05-27 | Time for another coffee and loops! In celebration of the upcoming batch of Pladask Baklengs, I put mine on the board to capture some lo-fi, jittery ambient textures in this piece. The time stretching, modulation, and pitch jumps in this pedal go so well together. Brigadier is in the mix on the "lead" track for some analog delay sounds with fluttery vibrato, and there's also a big DL4 MKII reverse loop happening in the background that slowly degrades, because I forgot to stop the looper from recording the input. I kinda dig how lo-fi it gets toward the end of the track. I hope you enjoy this as you head into your weekend!

Radio Mule HIGH Overdrive Preamp - Demo

Ambient Endeavors 2022-05-26 | It should come as no surprise that I'm a big low-gain texture fan. I tend to use drives as part EQ, part texture/saturator and enjoy the subtleties of a good low gainer or preamp type pedal. The Radio Mule HIGH is an excellent example of a polished, versatile overdrive preamp that works excellently as a neutral-ish preamp, dynamic EQ, low-gain drive or amp-like overdrive. Its active EQ controls give you plenty of range (12dB) to bump or cut low and high frequencies and toggles let you select from two cutoff frequencies for each. Meditative Sounds with the Polarbear Effects Petrichor and Line6 DL4 MKII

Ambient Endeavors 2022-05-17 | One of the reasons I LOVE ambient looping is the way it yields beautiful and unexpected moments. I sat down with this new Polarbear Effects Petrichor sequencing delay and layered a few tracks into DL4 MKII's looper and just love what came of it. The lo-fi nature of the Petrichor's pt2399 chip creates this airy-ness in the background, and the pitch jumps from the sequencer are so fluttery and beautiful. Washing everything out with the Jet Pedals Revelation v2 and some Valhalla Vintage Verb in post and I’m getting lost just listening back to it.

I’m also getting lost in the beauty of spring here, with plants blooming, trees budding and plenty of sunshine brightening each new day. It’s a gift, all of it. Trying not to take that for granted.

Inspiring Sounds with the Line6 DL4 MKII

Ambient Endeavors 2022-05-05 | The new DL4 MKII is a treasure chest of fun new sounds to spark creativity. I’ve honed in on my initial favorites - Glitch, Cosmos, Elephant Man - but continue to find new sounds that take my writing in fresh directions. Here I’m using the Harmony patch for the pitch jump leads, as well as Crisscross on the foundational guitar track for some great stereo movement. The bed of the track is a quick ambient loop I made on DL4 MKII, kicked it in reverse and washed it out with some reverb. If you haven’t tried that, you need to - but be prepared to waste hours going down the looper rabbit hole with this pedal.

All of that is made possibly by the Revv D20, with its onboard Torpedo IR / cab sim technology, and my 68 Custom Pro Reverb running into the OX Box.

Ambient Endeavors 2022-05-02 | JET Pedals just released their newest drive and it rips. The MR JAX is a signature distortion pedal designed for Chris Rocha that delivers rich overdrive and distortion tones and some fun hidden features, as JET is known to do. The foundation of this pedal is based around the classic Hotcake circuit, with some great refinements and improvements, including on-the-fly gain staging and a Mid Boost function, all available via that main foot switch. Post-Rock Sounds with the Yamaha RSS02T Revstar

Ambient Endeavors 2022-04-14 | The Yamaha RSS02T Revstar packs a powerful punch with its P90s, chambered mahogany body and smooth 12” radius fretboard. I love how easy it is to get some light grit and character without drowning the pickups in gain. It’s really well-suited for these post rock tones where dynamics are key. Light attack lets the cleans sparkle, which digging it brings out more snarl and grit. These guitars are super versatile and endlessly fun to play and write with!
