In this dynamic discussion, Steve Nouri (Founder, GenAI Works) and Dr. Stefan Leichenauer (VP of Engineering, SandboxAQ) unpack how AI is shifting from content generation to real-world impact. The spotlight is on Large Quantitative Models (LQMs)—AI systems that simulate physical, chemical, and biological systems with high fidelity.
While Large Language Models (LLMs) can summarize documents or pass licensing exams, they fall short when it comes to physical reasoning. They weren’t built to understand energy systems, molecular interactions, or new materials.
That’s where LQMs come in. Trained on quantitative data and grounded in the laws of physics and chemistry, LQMs are enabling breakthroughs in biopharma, materials science, and clean energy.
Steve and Stefan discuss how this new wave of AI is already reshaping R&D across critical industries—and why organizations that rely solely on generative AI risk falling behind.

At WEF 2025 in Davos, Jack Hidary, CEO of SandboxAQ, caught up with Yann LeCun, Chief AI Scientist at Meta, to explore the next frontier of AI—going beyond Large Language Models (LLMs) to truly understand the physical world.
While LLMs excel at generating text, composing haikus, and even passing professional exams, these models still fail at basic real-world reasoning—like understanding gravity or object permanence. Yann explains why this kind of AI struggles with continuous, real-world data and introduces JEPA (Joint Embedding Predictive Architecture)—an innovative approach that aims to teach AI how the world actually works instead of just predicting the next word in a sentence.
Jack and Yann also dive into AI’s role in scientific discovery, discussing how Large Quantitative Models (LQMs) are accelerating breakthroughs in drug discovery, materials science, and fundamental physics. With major challenges like Alzheimer’s and pancreatic cancer still lacking effective treatments, organizations must look beyond language models to help solve the world’s most complex scientific problems.

Originating in the 1940s, category theory provides a framework or “template” that unites many ideas, constructions, and themes across the mathematical landscape. A category theoretical viewpoint can also extend to disciplines outside of mathematics, providing new ways to think about new (and old) problems. Mathematical structure in natural language is one example, as some ideas behind today’s large language models seem to be pleasantly compatible with existing tools in category theory.
