The Heroic Lich King encounter is truly the greatest challenge that we as a guild have ever faced. This fight demands nothing less than perfection from all 25 raid members, a single mistake and a wipe is almost guaranteed - whether it be poorly placed defiles, missed infest cooldowns or even bad Val'kyr pickups. While the encounter mechanics are quite challenging, nothing compares to the true challenge of Heroic Lich King - getting the perfect raid comp online! From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank everyone (even you recruits!) who stuck around and put in the time to make this kill possible!
We've spent 5 months in Icecrown Citadel and during that time we've had quite a few interesting things happen...from new guild masters getting ninja promoted while AFK, members with authenticators getting "hacked", the Heroes of Newerth Beta, the Starcraft 2 Beta, teaching 11 tanks Heroic Lich King, geared main tanks quitting for Six Flags, PROCESS1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED, goldfishes catching fire, backseat raid leaders arguing with real raid leaders, holy paladins going on vacation during progression, failing 56k modems, resto druids who don't have to raid for 3 months, air jordan offtanks, recruits getting heroic T10 tokens over members, e-thugs getting sent to bed by their mothers, recruits quitting due to unexpected drama, frequent dinner with parents, warlocks quitting for the 9th time, guild masters who forget to do their homework before raid, new main tanks who take steroids before raid...through all the ups and downs, it's truly been an amazing journey.
So what's next? Well, with any luck we'll all be invited to the upcoming Cataclysm Beta! I know a lot of us sure would like to check out the new Level 85 Raids & Dungeons (if anyone from Blizzard is reading this - Help!) I also greatly look forward to selling Reins of the Bloodbathed Frostbrood Vanquisher from Icecrown Citadel 10 Man. Lastly, if I ever manage to get some more free time, there will be a huge redesign of the Forlorn Legacy guild website & forums just in time for Cataclysm.

Two days after the release of The Ruby Sanctum, Forlorn Legacy has defeated its sole encounter, Halion The Twilight Destroyer! We scored an impressive US 5th and World 10th!
Halion is a fairly straightforward encounter, even on heroic difficulty. This fight consists of three phases. Phase 1 starts in our realm, Halion will use fire based abilities such as Fiery Combusion, Flame Breath, and Meteor Strike. Fiery Combusion will leave a fire patch proportional to the size of how long it remained on the player, these should be placed away from the raid, will also knock back any nearby players when displled. Meteor Strike drops down an orb of fire that explodes and spawns four fire patches that travel in different directions. Meteor Strike also spawns a Living Infero and multiple Living Embers. It is very important to note that the Living Inferno has an aura that increases the damage and HP of Living Embers, so the Inferno must be tanked away from the Embers.
Phase 2 begins at 75%, where Halion dissapears from our realm and enters the Twilight Realm (very reminiscent of Sartharion and his mini-bosses), the entire raid must click the portal to enter. In the Twilight Realm, Halion will use shadow based abilities such as Soul Consumption, Dark Breath and Twilight Cutter. Soul Consumption is identical to Fiery Combusion with the exception that when dispelled, it will pull nearby players in. Twilight Cutter activates the four orbs rotating around the circular encounter area, beams will spawn from each orb, forming a large X, stay between the beams to survive!
Phase 3 begins at 50%, Halion will phase between both realms. Basically, this is a combination if Phase 1 and 2, but the raid must remain split between the two realms. A mechanic called Corporeality is introduced in this phase, which requires the raid to balance the raid DPS between realms, think of it as a scale, if one side's DPS becomes to great, the scale will become unbalanced. The goal is to maintain close to equal DPS on both sides.
Our first challenge as a new wolf pack will be to conquer the mysteries of the Amethyst Mountain. Don't be fooled by the name, the Amethyst Mountains, while beautiful - can be extremely dangerous. Wild Grizzly Bears inhabit most of the region Our pack will move from area to area and conquer all the local wildlife.
Once Amethyst Mountain is ruled by the wolves of Forlorn Legacy - we will move on to the next adventure: Slough Creek. For now, our focus remains on Amethyst Mountain. As a special treat to our viewers, I have prepared a little preview video so you can see what we have in store for you over the course of the next few months and years.
The heroic version of the Alliance Gunship Battle is almost completely identical to its normal version. There is only one change to note, the rockets launched by the Horde Rocketeers now do a minor knockback as well as increased damage. We were able to defeat this encounter on our very first attempt. Due to its low level of difficulty, many consider this encounter to be "free" heroic loot!
The Blood Prince Council encounter on heroic difficulty features one new ability over its normal counterpart - Shadow Prison. Shadow Prison is a raid wide ability that deals increasing shadow damage for every second the player is moving. As players move they generate more and more stacks of this debuff. In order to clear these stacks, you must remain motionless for 10 seconds.
The heroic version of Professor Putricide has quite a few changes that make the fight a lot more interesting. First off, Putricide will no longers stun the whole raid during transition phases, instead he will spawn a Gas Cloud AND a Volatile Ooze. Every member of the raid will recieve one of two debuffs - Ooze Variable and Gas Variable. Raid members with the Ooze Variable may only attack the Volatile Ooze, those with the Gas Variable may only attack Gas Clouds. A new ability called Unbound Plague will also go out on the raid during all 3 phases (but not during transition phases). Unbound Plague deals damage based on how long it remains on its target, it must be passed on by moving within 3 yards of another player. Once Unbound Plague has been passed to a new host, the previous host gains a debuff called Plague Sickness, which increases the damage taken by Unbound Plague.
The approach to Phase 3 is also somewhat different, instead of spreading Mutated Plague among 3 tanks, you'll want to use at least 4 to gain the additional DPS time needed. We opted to use a DPS feral druid to tank for 2 stacks with damage reduction cooldowns.
Sindragosa is a pretty tough encounter on heroic. Believe it or not, there are very few differences between heroic and normal. More health and damage all around, as well as an additional Frost Beacon in the flight phase. The real challenge in this fight comes at 35% when she begins casting Mystic Buffet on the raid every 6 seconds, while continuing to cast Unchained Magic and Frost Beacon. In order to clear your Mystic Buffet stacks you must line of sight Sindragosa using the Frost Tombs that are frequently being formed throughout the phase.
Like his brother Festergut, Rotface's heroic mode only grants one new ability - Vile Gas. Yes, this is the same Vile Gas from the Festergut encounter, it will hit 3 random targets and disorient them for a few seconds. Since Vile Gas perfers ranged targets, as long as you have a few people standing at ranged you can effectively control who gets hit, which makes the encounter pretty trivial.
Festergut's heroic mode is very simple, he only gains one new ability - Malleable Goo. That's the same Malleable Goo from the Professor Putricide encounter! The key to avoid being hit by goo is to angle your camera up towards Professor Putricide, you will see him cast one at a time and it will go straight for the person it's targeted at. Festergut will also hit much harder, encouring you to start using tank cooldowns at 2 stacks of Inhaled Blight. Pungent Blight is also a guaranteed death for anyone with less than 3 stacks of Inoculated.
We found Festergut to be one of the easier heroic encounters in Icecrown Citadel.
The heroic version of Blood Queen Lana'thel is probably the easiest of the limited attempt encounters. The fight is exactly the same, with one exception - she gains a new ability called Presence of the Darkfallen. For every Vampire in the room, the damage dealt by her Shroud of Sorrow will be increased by 10%.
Valithria Dreamwalker is quite possibly one of the most unique encounters of the entire expansion. In this fight, your goal is to heal Valithria, a Green Dragon captured by the Lich King, up to full health. Upon reaching full health, the encounter will end. The major difference between normal and heroic aside from the usual increased HP/damage of all adds is a new debuff gained from entering portals and passing through clouds - Emerald Vigor is replaced by Twisted Nightmare. Twisted Nightmare is basically the same debuff but for every stack you have, you will take 200 Nature damage per second. Holy Paladins are built for this fight like no other, due to their extremely large single target heals coupled with self healing via Beacon of Light.
On Wednesday, February 11th, Forlon Legacy defeated Deathbringer Saurfang on heroic difficulty!
This encounter does not change much at all aside from the usual increased HP/damage. The fight mechanics are the same, your overall goal is to prevent Deathbringer Saurfang from generating excess amounts of Blood Power. On heroic, Saurfang's Blood Beasts will gain Scent of Blood shortly after spawning, this will increase their damage and reduce everyone's movement speed by 80%. These adds will need to be killed as fast as possible so they do not land any melee attacks, as this would increase Saurfang's Blood Power. Additionally, Mark of the Fallen Champion will now heal Saurfang for 20% of his total HP as opposed to 5%, any deaths from mark will more than likely result in a wipe due to the strict DPS requirement.
With the unlocking of the final Icecrown Citadel gate, the Frostwing Halls has become available! This wing contains two boss encounters - Valithria Dreamwalker and Sindragosa.
Sindragosa was an encounter we got to spend a lot of time testing on the PTR, so we knew the fight mechanics fairly well. Like any dragon fight, Sindragosa has a flight phase and a ground phase. When she is on the ground there are a few abilities to watch out for. Unchained Magic will be periodically cast on 5 random mana users, for the 30 second duration, any spell you cast will cause a stack of Instability, which will deal 2000 arcane damage after 8 seconds, this ability does stack so be careful not to cast too many spells. Every minute or so, Sindragosa will cast Icy Grip, which pulls everyone in the raid to her, immediately after casting Icy Grip she will begin casting Blistering Cold, this will hit everyone in a 25 yard radius for 35,000 frost damage, so be sure to run out!
When Sindragosa flies up in the air she will cast Frost Beacon on 5 random players, after 7 seconds they will become Frost Tombs. These tombs must be dps'ed down to a low percent but not destroyed, they must be used as line of sight barriers to prevent taking damage from the Frost Bombs that Sindragosa will be dropping during the phase. The air and ground phases will repeat until Sindragosa reaches 35%, at this point she will begin casting Mystic Buffet on the raid every 5 seconds. She will also resume casting Frost Beacons on random players, once again Frost Tombs will play a vital role for avoiding damage. The only way to clear your stacks of Mystic Buffet is to get behind one a Frost Tomb (similar to Forgemaster Garfrost in the Pit of Saron).
We defeated Sindragosa with 19 of our attempts remaining, which means The Lich King is officially on notice.
This has been one very exciting week for us. On Wednesday, we defeated Sindragosa on only our second attempt, which left gave us a total of 19 attempts for the Lich King!
Most of the week was spent preparing for the Lich King encounter, part of this included working on the 10 man version and I am happy to say that all 3 of our groups were able to defeat him! On Sunday night we began our attempts on the 25 man version of The Lich King, things went well for the most part, we got Phase 1 and 2 down solid but Phase 3's Vile Spirits presented a bit of a challenge. We ended the night with a solid 8 attempts remaining. On monday night we came back with a new Phase 3 strategy and defeated The Lich King on our very first attempt!

This past Tuesday, Blizzard unlcocked the second wing of Icecrown Citadel - The Crimson Halls! This new wing contains two new boss encounters, The Blood Prince Council and Blood Queen Lana'thel. As usual, we went in on our alts first to check out the new bosses. The Blood Prince Council was relatively easy, seems undertuned to be quite honest. Lana'thel presented a few problems for our alts, but we were able to learn the fight mechanics.
We came back in on our mains today and in a few short attempts we had our kill (9/15 Attempts Remaining). This fight relies heavilly on "bite" coordination, about 15 seconds into the fitght, Blood Queen Lana'thel will bite a random DPS, this applies the Essence of the Blood Queen debuff for one minute, in order to maintain this, that person must bite another player every 60 seconds or they will become mind controlled. Each player that is bitten must continue to bite another player, eventually you will run out of people to bite. The key to this fight is to bite the next player at the last possible moment (right as Frenzied Bloodthirst is about to expire), to delay the eventual mind controls. If bites are managed well, and your DPS doesn't suck, you should have a relatively easy kill.
The Faction Champions are the third encounter in Trial of the Grand Crusader. The one and only difference between normal and heroic (aside from the usual increased damage and health) is taunt immunity. While it cannot be confirmed, there are reports of improved AI in heroic difficulty, you will often see multiple NPC's attacking the same player. Like the previous two encounters in the instance, most consider the Faction Champions to be fairly easy as long as you have good situational awareness and fast reflexes.
Lord Jaraxxus is a relatively easy encounter in Trial of the Grand Crusader. The differences between normal and heroic difficulty are minor, in heroic mode the portals and volcanoes that spawn during the encounter can be targeted, and must be destroyed or else Mistresses and Infernals will continue to spawn. Additionally, all of Lord Jaraxxus' abilities will of course hit harder and Incinerate Flesh will absorb more healing. As long as DPS quickly switches to portals and volcanoes, this fight is an assured victory.
The Val'kyr Twins is the 4th encounter of Trial of the Grand Crusader. On heroic difficulty the twins will use two new damage over time abilities, Touch of Light and Touch of Darkness. Touch of Light may only be cast on those who are Dark Attuned and Touch of Darkness may only be cast on those who are Light Attuned, this debuff can be removed by switching attunements. Also in heroic difficulty, the absorption shields (Shield of Darkness and Shield of Light) and its accommodating heal are significantly more powerful, putting extra emphasis on DPS. Failure to burn down the shield in time will result in the twins healing for 50% of their health.
Many consider the Val'kyr Twins to be the first of two challenging encounters in Trial of the Grand Crusader. Please note that the strategy depicted in this video (if you could even call it that) is no longer used.
The Northrend Beasts is the very first encounter in Trial of the Grand Crusader. The fight is a pushover as long as you understand some of the minor differences between normal and heroic. One of the fist changes you'll notice is that in Phase 1, the fire bombs cast by Gormok The Impaler will leave a DoT effect that stacks for every second you stand in it. In Phase 3, when Icehowl performs his Massive Crash ability, you no longer receive the speed increase after the stun, so be ready to run fast! As with all heroic difficulty encounters, all spells and abilities have had their damage increased by 25-30%, all boss mobs and spawned mobs have had their health increased as well.
Warning: This video is extremely self serving! Much to my surprise, when Blizzard released the latest version of the WoW Armory, my name was listed as being the first person in the country to get the following achievements "Realm First! Level 80", "Realm First! Level 80 Dwarf", "Realm First! Level 80 Paladin."
I did NOT employ any of the exploits that certain Europeans may or may not have used! And of course, I was the only person playing the account :) Thanks to massive amounts of Red Bull I was able to stay up for a little over 35 hours. I did participate in the Wrath of the Lich King Beta quite extensively so I pretty much knew how to do every quest.
US First Level 80
US First Level 80 Dwarf
US First Level 80 Paladin
This video contains three perspectives from raid members - Aurelius (Holy Paladin), Desecrate (Combat Rogue) and Awbade (Protection Paladin). Since the encounter is technically three encounters in one, we felt that having multiple perspectives would help viewers better understand what exactlygoes on during the fight.
Just like Lord Marrowgar, Festergut is also an extremely easy raid encounter that we certainly expect to be buffed in the future. The fight is so extremely simple that I don't even feel an explination is warranted, so i'll just leave you with the video!
Today was the first day of PTR testing for the Icecrown Citadel raid zone. We were able to test the first encounter, Lord Marrowgar. The encounter was fairly simple and while it was on normal mode, it will more than likely be buffed and retested in the future.
