With a shortened 2023 season, the railroad hosted a photo charter for the second April in-a-row for 60's final run. This year, 60 pulled both freight and passenger trains throughout the day, allowing photographers to capture a variety of scenes with the bulky 2-8-0. The locomotive was equipped an MD Whistles Grand Trunk Western 6 Chime, providing a distinct sound in the rural New Jersey countryside.
Unlike last year, the weather proved quite challenging to both the photographers and the railroad. After a calm morning and early afternoon, harsh thunderstorms and hail storms pounded the area for multiple hours later in the day, forcing several locations and runbys to be cut from the agenda.
Despite this, the locomotive put on an excellent performance for its final run. So sit back, relax, and enjoy rural branchline running with Black River & Western 60 on the Flemington Freight Finale.

For almost 4 years, 611 was a major draw for tourists at the Strasburg Rail Road; however, it was time to move on. In the spring of 2023, the Strasburg Rail Road announced the final excursions with 611 would be held on the final two weekends of May.
With this knowledge in mind, it was time to return to the Strasburg Rail Road and see 611 once again after almost 3 and 4 years respectively. In addition to 611, the only other operational Norfolk and Western steam locomotive, 475, also operated, allowing for two N&W steam locomotives to run together one last time. So sit back, relax, and enjoy a Norfolk and Western Steam Finale on the Strasburg Rail Road.

On this warm, windy April day, the freshly restored 16 pulled four brand-new coaches along with a caboose. The locomotive and train looked great, allowing for many great photographic opportunities along this legendary line. Additionally, with the intelligent realization the railroad will not survive without captivating the interest of future generations, the Nevada Northern hosts a youth photographer's scholarship each year where contestants submit three of their best images for judging. The railroad selects two Grand Prize Winners and two Runner Ups in an effort to excite young adults, ages 18-30, about railroad preservation and the Nevada Northern. This year, I had the great honor and privilege of being selected as one of the Grand Prize Winners. All winners won free admittance to one of the weekends along with a variety of other rewards.
For 2023, Nevada Northern 2-8-0 steam locomotive number 81 ran exclusively for both weekends. With locomotive 93 in the shop for running gear work and locomotive 40 undergoing its 1472-day inspection, 81 shined the spotlight for its second February of charters after completing a multi-year restoration in September of 2021. Throughout the weekend, 81 pulled a variety of consists including a passenger train, an ore train, a freight train, and even a snow train pushing Rotary B through the yard. Additionally, the railroad ran a demonstration of their steam crane which is the only steam crane actually used by a railroad for active service in North America. Although 81 was built as the railroad's general freight engine, it looked right at home on all of the trains it pulled. For this particular weekend, 81 sported a beautiful-sounding Southern Pacific 6 Chime built by the Osborne Whistle Works based in Australia.
With cold temperatures, plenty of snow, and steep grades, 81 put on a fantastic show, allowing for a great three days of photography and videography of this iconic railroad. So sit back, relax, and enjoy seeing steam on the Nevada Northern at its best.

On this cold winter's day, the constantly changing weather conditions allowed for the capturing of a variety of shots. After suffering a mechanical problem on one of its Fall Foliage Excursions on October 8, the railroad decided to run 2102 on their final steam-powered excursion to Jim Thorpe. With the clocks falling back the prior night, the early evening darkness allowed for some unique lighting on the return trip to Reading. Due to the logistics involved in operating one of these all-day excursions, the 2102 was cut off the train at Port Clinton on its return to Reading just as the darkness of the night settled in.
All good things must come to an end, so sit back, relax, and enjoy seeing Reading 2102 on its last excursion of its first season back in service after a 6-year restoration.

With Reading T-1 2102 stealing the show with its return earlier this year, 425 ran rather infrequently throughout 2022. To make up for a quiet final year before its federally-mandated 1472-day inspection, the Reading & Northern closed out the year with 425 on the point of two weekends of Christmas excursions.
For the first time since 2014, 425 pulled Christmas trips on various sections of the Reading & Northern system. On the first weekend, 425 ran out of Tamaqua with trips running to the Hometown High Bridge and New Ringgold. On the second weekend, 425 pulled from Reading to Port Clinton. The whistles used on these trips were a Nathan 3 Chime, a Southern 3 Chime, and a replica Reading 6 Chime. The cold temperatures allowed for a plentiful amount of smoke making for wonderful scenes of the Blue Pacific in action. So sit back, relax, and enjoy seeing Reading & Northern 425 thunder through northeastern Pennsylvania one last time.

With thousands of people trackside to witness this historic event, and likely the biggest steam event of 2022, the crews of 2102 and 425 put on an excellent show for all of the cameras. On this day, 2102 wore its standard Reading 6 Chime and Reading Hooter. Additionally, 425 was equipped with another Reading 6 Chime, allowing for a wonderful recreation of sounds reminiscent of the original Iron Horse Rambles Doubleheaders. With clear blue skies and temperatures in the mid-70s, the weather could not have been better for such an event. Making the most of the situation, we ventured off to the mountains of eastern Pennsylvania to capture 425 on one of its final runs before its federally mandated 1472-day inspection. On this day, 425, along with two of the railroad's "Fast Freight" SD50s, pulled a 15-car consist from Reading Outer Station to Jim Thorpe, and then returned to Port Clinton where 425 would be cutoff from the consist so the crew could prepare 2102 for its excursion the next day. The two SD50s pulled the remainder of the excursion back to Reading Outer Station. Additionally, 425 was equipped with an authentic Central Railroad of New Jersey 3 Chime, a whistle historic to the region considering part of the excursion travels over former CNJ trackage. The locomotive put on quite the finale, providing some final memories of the locomotive before its overhaul. So sit back, relax, and enjoy Reading & Northern 425 thunder up and down the Pocono Mountains on one of its last excursions before its 1472-day inspection.

To make up for this, the F-Units were used exclusively in July. After a three-year hiatus, the excursions once again continued in 2022 after not operating since 2019. The excursion also marked Reading & Northern 425's return to service after a long winter and spring of maintenance. After a spring and summer filled with multiple excursions utilizing recently-restored Reading 2102, it was a welcome return seeing the mighty, blue Pacific storming up and down the Pocono Mountains.
On this day, 425 pulled a 10-car excursion consist with former Delaware Lackawanna & Western and Reading Company coaches. The locomotive also sported a beautiful Southern Pacific 6 Chime which sounded excellent echoing in the mountains. So sit back, relax, and enjoy mountain railroading with Reading & Northern's iconic Pacific on The Mountain Top Limited.

After two test runs pulling empty hoppers through the mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania, the 2102 returned to the Iron Horse Rambles for the first time since 1964. While the locomotive operated under excursions dubbed "The Rambles" in the 1980s and 1990s, this was the first time 2102 pulled a Rambles excursion in the iconic black and gold Reading Rambles livery since the excursions ended in 1964.
The locomotive put on quite the show on this late May day, pulling 19 coaches unassisted from Reading Outer Station to Jim Thorpe and return. This marked only the third time the railroad operated a large steam excursion without a diesel assist. With the sound of the exhaust carrying for miles, and sporting both a Reading 6 Chime and Reading Hooter, 2102 sounded fantastic carrying a sold out train through the mountains. So sit back, relax, and enjoy a short preview of 2102 leading The Return of the Rambles.

As a nice surprise, many locations featured a wonderfully staged scene with period-correct actors. Additionally, two scenes featured vintage automobiles from the 1950s and 1960s, including a 1965 Ford Thunderbird, a 1951 Chevy Truck, and a 1966 Dodge Dart.
The charter could not have taken place on a better day with beautiful clear blue skies and temperatures in the mid 50s allowing for a great show of smoke and steam.

For the excursion, the railroad used a variety of rolling stock to make an attractive green and red holiday consist. The train consisted of an ex. Boston & Maine Steel caboose, an ex. Union Pacific first-class dining car, and 3 former Reading coaches. Number 40 sounded fantastic to finish 2021, wearing a beautiful Southern Pacific 6 Chime whistle, a standard voice on the ex. Reading Company's New Hope Branch for years.
Number 40 put on a great show to close out the 2021 steam season. So sit back, relax, and enjoy Christmastime branchline steam in the wintry woods of eastern Pennsylvania.

2022 and these excursions brought some historic changes to the railroad. 2022 saw the conversion of 11 from a coal burner to an oil burner. When built in 1920, 11 was originally designed as an oil burner for use in Cuba. After the order was cancelled, the Narragansett Pier Railroad purchased 11 in 1923 and converted it to burn coal. Additionally, these excursions marked the first time the railroad used a consist comprised of solely pullman-green coaches. In 2021, the combine car number 23 received a fresh coat of paint and coach number 997 completed a full restoration.
Between the first revenue runs of 11 as an oil burner and the freshly restored passenger train, these trips were a sight to behold. So sit back, relax, and enjoy steam through the rural countryside of Central Pennsylvania.

In 2020, Train Magazine was involved in multiple fundraisers to help push the project over the finish line. On December 31, 2020, Chesapeake & Ohio 1309 was steamed up and moved under its own power for the first time in 64 years. After a quiet 2021, the Railroad announced in late July that 1309 would be powering the final weekend of Polar Express Trips in Mid-December. Following the announcement, the locomotive began a series of test runs in Late-November and Early-December and emerged as Western Maryland 1309.
Following these test runs, on Friday, December 17, 2021 at 3:30 PM, Western Maryland 1309 pulled its first revenue train for the first time in 65 years.
Over the course of the weekend, the locomotive pulled 10 trains, 5 during the day and 5 during the night from the railroad's headquarters in Cumberland, Maryland to the famous Helmstetter's Curve. The trips were about 10 miles long and 1 hour in length. The locomotive and its crew put on a great show for hundreds of railfans who were trackside to witness this historic event. So sit back, relax, and enjoy mountain railroading at its finest with 1309 at the point of the railroad's first scheduled steam passenger trains in over 6 years.

Over the course of the 12 days 425 operated, 11 days were spent on the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway that runs between Jim Thorpe and Old Penn Haven in the Lehigh Gorge. On Father's Day, the railroad took 425 to onto the Reading Line, the same line used for the popular Fall Foliage Excursions. This was also the first time 425 ran public trips on the Reading Line since 2019. These trips departed from the Tamaqua Station, utilizing the brand new platform built in 2020. The first and third trips headed north to the Hometown Highbridge and the second trip headed south to New Ringgold. On the last trip, the train was turned on the wye at Haucks allowing for the passengers to experience 425 leading the train in both directions and also allowing for less moves to be completed in Jim Thorpe later in the evening.
We were trackside for 5 of the 12 days, and 425 and its crews put on a great show to kick off the final year of operation for the classic Pacific before beginning its overhaul.

Making the best of what mother nature had to offer on this late May day, we were able to capture an impressive show of steam with fresh greenery, something that has become rare on the New Hope & Ivyland Railroad, as this was the first time 40 has run during the summer months since 2014. Some 150 years later after the pioneer days are over, the Black Hills Central Railroad continues a common event on their Thursday evening 6:45 PM trips. The locomotive used on this day is number 108.
The 108 was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in March of 1926 for the Potlatch Lumber Company of Bovill, Idaho as their number 24. Oddly enough, 24 had the distinction of being one of only three 2-6-6-2Ts to have a full tank design, and one of the only 2-6-6-2Ts that was built to burn coal which was quite unusual for logging railroads of the Pacific Northwest. 24 was later converted to burn oil like most other 2-6-6-2Ts of the Pacific Northwest. In 1934, 24 was sold to the Weyerhaeuser Timber Company of Longview, Washington and renumbered to 108. 108 finished its career for the Weyerhaeuser Timber Company in 1959. Instead of being scrapped, 108 was put on display in Longview from 1959 to 1964 when it was donated the Northwest Railroad Museum in Snoqualmie, Washington in 1964. In 2016, the 108 was put up for sale and the Black Hills Central Railroad jumped on the chance and bought 108 in January of 2016. It arrived in Hill City in March of 2016 and restoration work commenced immediately. 4 years later, in February of 2020, 108 was fired for the first time in over 60 years. In April of 2020, 108 steamed under its own power for the first time since the 1950s, and its first time on the Black Hills Central Railroad.
We'll capture the shootout onboard 108 as well as unique sunset and moonrise shots that are hard to come by on steam railroads.

Between November and December, 40 sported numerous looks and sounds. On the first weekend of trips, 40 was in its normal New Hope & Ivyland scheme with a Crosby 3 Chime. From the second weekend to the last weekend, a Christmas wreath was added to make 40 look more festive, and the Crosby 3 Chime was swapped out for the CNJ 3 Chime which was worn by 40 for a few years in the early 2010s.
The crews put on a great show to end 2020 on a good note. So sit back, relax, and enjoy branchline passenger trains pulled by the small 1925 2-8-0.

Some 60 years later, the Strasburg Railroad, in conjunction with Christopher Pollock and Lerro Photography, hosted a weekend of photo charters with a morning and afternoon session featuring the Plymouth on Friday, a night session with Plymouth, Canadian National 89, and Great Western 90 and a morning and afternoon session with Canadian National 89 and Great Western 90 on Saturday. Both took turns pulling a passenger and freight consist. A last minute addition included a morning session with number 90 pulling a standard passenger train on Sunday.
90 was done up in the famous Egg paint scheme it wore from 1967-1983.
We were on sight for both sessions on Saturday, and the weather could not have been any better. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the sights and sounds of steam when steam strikes back on the Strasburg Railroad, 60 years later.

425 returned to steam in December of 2007 and ran public excursions from 2008 to 2010. In 2011 and 2012, it sat in storage and underwent repairs. It later ran in 2013 and was painted into its modern blue paint scheme in 2015.
On these days, 425 was wearing a Reading 6 Chime which came from Reading 2102, a Baltimore & Ohio "Tumor Top" 3 Chime, and a Southern Ps-4 Longbell 3 Chime.

Leading the charge up these grades are a pair of ex-Weyerhaeuser Timber Company 2-6-6-2T Compound Mallets numbered 108 and 110. The 110 was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in August of 1928 for the Weyerhaeuser Timber Company in Vail, Washington. 110 was the first of many logging mallets for the Weyerhaeuser Timber Company. 110 ran for the Weyerhaeuser Timber Company until 1954 when it was sold to Rayonier Incorporated of Railroad Camp, Washington. 110 ran for Rayonier until 1968 when it was sold to was sold to the Promontory Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society in Salt Lake City, Utah. In 1971, 110 was transferred to the Wasatch Railroad Museum and put on display at Heber City, Utah. In 1993, 110 was put in storage at the Nevada State Railway Museum in Boulder City, Nevada. In 1999, 110 was sold to the Black Hills Central Railroad, and it returned to service in 2001. 110 has been the primary locomotive on the railroad ever since.

Oddly enough, 24 had the distinction of being one of only three 2-6-6-2Ts to have a full tank design, and one of the only 2-6-6-2Ts that was built to burn coal which was quite unusual for logging railroads of the Pacific Northwest. 24 was later converted to burn oil like most other 2-6-6-2Ts of the Pacific Northwest. In 1934, 24 was sold to the Weyerhaeuser Timber Company of Longview, Washington and renumbered to 108. 108 finished its career for the Weyerhaeuser Timber Company in 1959. Instead of being scrapped, 108 was put on display in Longview from 1959 to 1964 when it was donated the Northwest Railroad Museum in Snoqualmie, Washington in 1964. In 2016, the 108 was put up for sale and the Black Hills Central Railroad jumped on the chance and bought 108 in January of 2016. It arrived in Hill City in March of 2016 and restoration work commenced immediately. 4 years later, in February of 2020, 108 was fired for the first time in over 60 years. In April of 2020, 108 steamed under its own power for the first time since the 1950s, and its first time on the Black Hills Central Railroad.
108 and 110 have been alternating duties this summer on the Black Hills Central Railroad and are the strongest locomotives on the railroad. The Railroad also owns a GP-9 number 63 which has been used on the 7:00 AM trips and when the 110 needed maintenance. With the acquisition of 108, and no 7:30 AM trips this season, 63 has not been used this year. The famous number 7 is a 2-6-2 built in 1919 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. 7 was the face of the railroad until 110 became operational in 2001. 7 is currently out of service on display in Hill City. The railroad also owns two 2-6-2Ts number 103 and 104. 103 is currently in storage and a part source for the 104. 104 runs during the less crowded times of the season when there are only 4 cars.
108 ran all 7 days we visited and put on a great show, so sit back, relax, and enjoy the freshly restored engine work hard up the steep mountain grades of South Dakota.

The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. To commemorate such a milestone, I compiled shots I captured last June on the Chama side of the railroad.

In 1991, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad traded their K-37 #497 for the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad's 482 which sat in Chama rusting away for years. In just a mere 7 months from arriving in Durango, the locomotive was once again under steam.
482 has been my personal favorite Durango & Silverton locomotive since I found out about the railroad in the mid-late 2000s at just a few years old, and it was the first K-36 and D&RGW locomotive I ever saw and rode in person. It holds an extremely special place in my heart.
With that being said, enjoy a compilation I made with 2019 footage of Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad 482.

Back in mid-October, I visited the Everett Railroad to capture some steam with some color in the trees. The clips were not great, and the best locations were not achieved, but enjoy some steam as there won't be much for the foreseeable future.
