Kais' YT channel: youtube.com/user/E4MotionNRW/featuredVelove Armadillo electric cargo bike with solar panels on an adventure to ChinaVeloveBikes2019-02-24 | Patrick Perret, from Switzerland, decided to combine making a statement and do a grand adventure together with his children Yoann and Emilie. He says:
I think it is necessary to realize that moving with a clean vehicle is essential if we want to provide a healthy life for our children. Currently 80% of cars move with only one person in them. Why move 1 ton of scrap to transport 80 kg? 90% of the energy consumed is used to move the car and maximum 10% for the person inside. For everyday journeys, for example to get to work, it is quite possible to use a 4-wheeled, 80 kg vehicle in which one is safe, operating with clean energy. In addition, it brings considerable benefits regarding cost and parking.
We couldn't agree more! He continues:
Of course, the icing on the cake of the demonstration of the clean vehicle is the Adventure. The Silk Road is an amazing journey for my children and myself with great emotions and memories. In addition to the daily school education that I will strive to give them, my children will enjoy this journey for an education and an open mind that will give them a different vision of life.

Some reflections: The suspension is absolutely wonderful to have, especially when riding on gravel roads!
Recumbent seat much more comfortable than saddle, but when riding 12-14 hours in one go, no seat is 100 % comfortable.
Two 0,6 kWh batteries with slow chargers was not enough. More batteries or faster chargers would have worked better, as I did not have access to grid power most nights. With faster chargers, I could have charged when taking a break at a café or similar.
The solar panel was mounted just the night before in an not ideal position. It is also an old testing flexible solar panel that seems to have lost half of its maximum capacity. Also, the controller hardware seemed to not like the fast changing shadowing of the panel. So the end result was that it did not add much to the charging of the batteries. But, there was A LOT of positive comments along the road about the solar panel! With fresh panels, better placement (maybe doubling as weather protecting roof?) and the right choice of controller hardware this can be really interesting for touring when you don't have access to power outlets at night.
Best thing about the trip was all the nice and interested people I met! There was so many positive comments, especially about the solar panel.
Touring by regular bike is something I do a lot, for example I biked to Berlin just before this trip on a regular touring bike. As I find the exercise to be an important part of my bike touring, I will probably not use the Armadillo next time. It is too easy to pedal with the electric assist. And I really don't need all that cargo capacity. But maybe I'll start thinking about an adventure where I do bring a lot of stuff...Velove Armadillo with third party taxi module -the QuicabVeloveBikes2018-06-17 | Quicab has developed a fast, friendly and funky third party passenger module for the Velove Armadillo cargo bike. So of course I had to try it out! It was ridden from Gothenburg to Hyssna for a crayfish party, used as a camper and then ridden back. One way distance about 50 km. The only thing that was added was a mattress, sleeping bag and pillow. Sound system was already mounted!
So is there a point to REALLY use it as a camper, for touring? If you want to cover maximum distance per day, I think there are better solutions. But if you enjoy riding a little bit slower, taking in everything you pass then this might be interesting. If also adding a few square meters of solar panels to keep the batteries charged and a hard, lockable shell it could actually be a really enjoyable way to travel. A cosy bed, well above ground, is always ready for you, and you have electric assist without having to charge at night! Would be fun to make a really cosy interior. Who will be the first one to do it?
