SMSR: The Piano Playing Thwomps - 1.5x A Presses
updated
Video Notes:
This video is an improvement from my last video on Chapter 8-3 where I completed the chapter in 32x "2" Presses. You can find the video here: youtu.be/9Z0hK9_BV4o
Since then, a whopping 7x "2 presses" have been saved. Let's go through them in order of discovery.
First, 1x "2 press" was cut out when discovering that Luigi can cross the 1-1 pit using a head bonk. This allowed us to Luigi earlier and cut the jump into the first blue block of the Dimentio chase.
Second, I found a way to use Block Blocks to skip having to use Thudley Jumps or Luigi. In the Magiblot rooms, I could bounce the Magiblots high enough to reach the blocks without jumping as Mario. This cut out two character swaps in place of using an item which is a 2x save overall. Later, I found the same Block Block strategy could be used in the following maze room. There, it only saved 1x as the room was already clearable in 3x Thudley Jumps.
Lastly, ZachLink99 found an improvement in the 3-2 segment. By using Fleep, Luigi could stall in the water indefinitely, allowing a Blooper to push and damage Luigi across the tidal pool. This does kill Luigi so we need an extra life shroom from 7-3. Doing this allows us to stay as Luigi a little bit longer, saving 3x "2 presses" (namely two to swim into a blue block and one to reach a high point in the 4-2 segment).
2 Presses:
1 - To TJ to solve the first maze

Challenge Notes:
This is the Super Paper Mario: 2 Button Challenge. The goal of the challenge is to beat Super Paper Mario while pressing the "2 button" as few times as possible. "Beating" Super Paper Mario requires Mario and the other characters to reach the end credits. Any method is allowed.
What does the "2 button" do?
The "2 button" does all of the following:
-Jump
-Swim
-Answer a multiple-choice prompt
-Open the quick menu
-Select any item in a menu
-Enter passwords
Things that look like they need the "2 button" but can be accomplished with other buttons:
-Progress through dialogue ("1 Button")
-Selecting objects with Tippi ("A Button")
-Ground pounding with Thudley ("1 Button")
-Exiting free fall as Luigi ("1 Button")
Each video is only a segment of the larger run and does not consider individual level high scores. This means that the "2 press" count for the segment may not be the lowest "2 press" count possible if considered in isolation. However, the "2 press" count showcased in the video is the lowest "2 press" count with the full game in mind. This also means that each video should link seamlessly to the next video chronologically (more or less). Because we are looking at the full game, we also count any save prompts that appear after the chapter is over.
If you have any further questions, post them in the comment section and I'll try to get back to you.

Video Notes:
This video is an improvement from my last video on Underwhere where I completed the chapter in 60x "2" Presses. You can find the video here: youtu.be/iCmtaWAA_5k
Since then, two saves have been found. The first is just a routing change. I realized that I could save a character swap by breaking the brick block in 2D so that Luigi could backtrack through the water-level room. This also cut out an LSJ which opens up an item slot (although currently unused).
The second save was discovered while I was making this TAS. I wondered if the oscillating fountain could go high enough to reach Luigi without jumping. After some testing, I realized it was barely possible if Mario slid off the fountain. The slide is pixel-perfect and the fountain needs to be at the maximum height.
Other than the new saves, Underwhere offers a few unique challenges as we don't have access to Pixls and we have to swim 2000 units. For more information on tricks used to minimize jumping and swimming, please refer to the previous video's description.

Opening chests from the wrong dimension
Video Notes:
This video is an improvement from my last video on Chapter 4-4 where I completed the chapter in 13x "2" Presses. You can find the video here: youtu.be/DcDjzOtoTxg
Since then, the SPM community found a glitch where you can open chests in midair using 3D damage. Here, I use this glitch to collect the key in the second chest without having to climb up a staircase. This glitch requires Mario to jump, so one "2 press" is still required. This trick saves 2x "2 presses" overall.
Outside this new glitch, the rest of the chapter involves clever uses of Thudley, like using Tileoids to gain height or flip inside of gravity blocks to press them.
Lastly, I should mention the boss fight of this chapter, Brobot. Because the Brobot boss fight is supposed to be a side-scrolling shooter section, we can't easily damage Brobot as we cannot shoot (reminder that shooting requires the "2 button"). Instead, we damage Brobot through ground pounding. This is incredibly slow as we need a barrier candy to prevent taking damage ourselves. I decided to speed up the boss fight for the sake of this video, but you can watch the full unedited boss fight in the unabridged version found here: youtu.be/7gal2NDizCQ

This video is an improvement from my last video on Chapter 3-3 where I completed the chapter in 17x "2" Presses. You can find the video here: youtu.be/iyLMw7PHjq8
Since then, three saves have been found. The first two come from poison control. Because there are now several places to get mushrooms before 3-2, we can use a damage boost from a poison cloud to skip a previously required jump. This does poison us, but due to our max health being 20, we can survive the poison both times. The second save also involves poison. This time, we use the poison to Thudley Cancel to barely make it across the final gap to the door atop the tree without jumping. The last save simply involves more damage boosting from spinies.
This level primarily focuses on Thudley Jumping (or TJs) which allows Mario to jump infinitely and allows to save a few "2 presses" while climbing the tree. Outside of TJs and clever platforming, there isn't anything that needs further explaining.
2 Presses:
1 - To Thudley Jump (TJ) to the first set of hard blocks

This video is an improvement from my last video on Chapter 3-2 where I completed the chapter in 25x "2" Presses. You can find the video here: youtu.be/kubj2GHG0Cs
Since then, a new route was made that uses Thoreau instead of Boomer. Because you can jump underwater while holding an object, it saved a single "2 press" even with the extra two for switching Pixls. In addition, Thoreau allows to clear the enemy gauntlet room without pressing "2".
One final improvement was made in the return trip through 3-1. Using Thudley hovers, Mario can barely make it to a gloomba as it falls to bounce off of it and clear the large gap.

Video Notes:
This video is an improvement from my last video on Chapter 1-2 where I completed the chapter in 15x "2" Presses. You can find the video here: youtu.be/ujgUTa7c8zA
Since then, I accidentally discovered that Mario can bounce off of a koopa if there's a ledge; even if the koopa cannot walk off the ledge. This is done by having Mario briefly fall off the ledge, but then snapping back to the ledge due to floor hitboxes. When Mario snaps back to the ledge, Mario is then at level with the koopa. Because Mario is technically still falling, Mario is then able to bounce off of the koopa. This allows Mario to chain some bounces off of the paratroopas and reach the top row of hard blocks without jumping.
For more info on GBS, please refer to the previous video's description.
Chapter 1-2 doesn't feature many optimizations other than GBS as Mario doesn't have any pixls at this point and the level is mostly a vertical climb. However, a shortcut found by flipping into 3D at the starting area allows skipping most of this climbing.
This video features a pixl skip (Thoreau in this case). Thoreau is one of 5 pixls that are skippable in Super Paper Mario. This is because if we manage to beat the intended chapter without gaining the pixl, the game gives the pixl to you after the chapter is over in a short dialogue sequence.
This video features two modified views to help better visualize GBS.
The first modified view (at 3:09) lights up the room that Mario is currently in as the game doesn't normally do this. This was achieved by splicing together 5 different GBS attempts, each with a different room lit up.
The second modified view (at 3:48) is a zoomed-out perspective to better illustrate how high Mario climbs OOB. This modified view also uses hacks to light up the main area.
NOTE: This video is a spliced TAS. To avoid having to reTAS GBS, I edited two segments together. The first segment is from the start to opening Red's bridge. The second segment (taken from the 15x video) is from opening Red's bridge to the end. This is why the score counter jumps down 15 points in the middle of the video. This video can 100% be done in one segment as RNG can easily be manipulated to cover for any discrepancies.
2 Presses:
1 - To jump into the ladder block
2 - To jump to the ladder
3 - To jump onto the prize blocks
4 - To jump to the hard blocks above the prize blocks
5 - To jump to the platform with the door past the spiny tromps
6 - To jump into the pipe leading to the background path to Red's House

8 - To jump to the second floor of Red's house
9 - To answer Red's question
10 - To jump into the pipe leading to the foreground area of Ye Old Town
11 - To jump up the small staircase leading to Ye Old Town
12 - To jump over the large gap normally crossed by the green bridge

Video Notes:
This video is an improvement from my last video on Chapter 2-4 where I completed the chapter in 19x "2" Presses. You can find the video here: youtu.be/ggmbx6KIHi0
Since then, I completely changed the route for 2-4, Post Chapter 2, and 3-1. This is because of new discoveries that allow me to cut out pixl swaps. Here, I cut the pixl swap to Boomer for the Mimi boss fight. Normally, Mario cannot chain a continuous jump combo on Mimi due to Merlee interrupting the fight. However, by landing on the toilet stalls, Mario can stay in the air to beat Mimi in only 1 jump. However, now this segment ends with Slim and not Boomer. But due to further discoveries (which I explain in the Post Chapter 2 and 3-1 videos) this saves a total of 2x "2 presses" across the three segments.
Chapter 2-4 is a fairly standard chapter in terms of interesting strategies. Most of the level features normal platforming with a few clever uses of Mimi herself to cut down on the "2 presses". The main feature in this video is the Atomic Boo section. Here, I level up at the perfect time to get refill our health to just barely damage boost up the staircase in 0x "2 presses". This is why I do an EXP grind in 2-1. I level up to 4 which gives me 20 HP and 2 attack. To climb the staircase in 0x "2 presses", I need 14 HP, keeping Mario alive at 6 HP for the rest of the chapter.
2 Presses:
1 - To jump on the Gromeba
2 - To jump on the first row of dimension blocks
3 - To jump on the second row of dimension blocks

Video Notes:
This video is an improvement from my last video on Chapter 2-1 where I completed the chapter in 18x "2" Presses. You can find the video here: youtu.be/RPJ6BArSPng
Since then, a lot has changed. First, an OOB method was found that could be used to hit the blue switch without needing to enter the background. This saves the platforming to the switch and the need to use the Return Pipe, cutting a lot of "2 presses". To set this up, however, I need to jump on a paragoomba and switch to Mario.
To avoid switching back to Peach, I platform through the rest of 2-1 as Mario. This adds 2x "2 presses" to cross the pond in the second to final room as I could no longer float as Peach.
I also skip Boomer in this segment, like last time, as Boomer asks 8 questions which quickly racks up "2 presses". I use the Shell Shock method as I only have 1 Life Shroom at this point and I need to use it get past the electric gates in 2-3 without Slim. The Shell Shock takes 3x "2 presses".
The rest of Chapter 2-1 is straightforward, although the platforming is not and requires a lot of precise workarounds, but they do not need further explanation.
This video features a pixl skip (Boomer in this case). Boomer is one of 5 pixls that are skippable in Super Paper Mario. This is because if we manage to beat the intended chapter without gaining the pixl, the game gives the pixl to you after the chapter is over in a short dialogue sequence.

Mario don't go into the pit!!! Oh wait... what?
Video Notes:
This video is an updated version of my last video on Post Chapter 2 which accounts for recent route changes in 2-4 and 3-1. You can find the previous version here: youtu.be/pClehvTn8Jw
This new route cuts out 2 pixl swaps in exchange for two added jumps. Overall, this saves 2x "2 presses" across three segments. This route saves 1x "2 press" in 2-4, 2x "2 presses" in 3-1, but adds 1x " 2 press" in Post Chapter 2, which is why the "2 press" count increased from the last video.
To save one of the pixl swaps, I use a form of hazard respawn glitch to place Mario inside the red bricks to skip needing to blow them up with Boomer, which saves a pixl swap. I do need to switch back to Boomer to blow up the wall for Post Chapter 4, but because I now end the segment with Boomer, I don't need to switch to Boomer in Chapter 3-1.
Post Chapter 2 is fairly standard when it comes to strategies. The main feature here is the stylish moves. There are two stylish moves that Mario can pull off; a "nice" stylish move or a "good" stylish move. "Nice" stylish moves keep Mario in the air for only a second, but "good" stylish moves keep Mario in the air for two seconds. By using "good" stylish moves, we can keep Mario in the air long enough to combo off of the coconuts to cross the second pit and reach the pipe without needing any additional "2 presses". We also use this strategy in the reverse direction in no "2 presses" at all.
2 Presses:
1 - To jump on the pipe to first-floor Flipside
2 - To cross the first pit
3 - To jump into the second pit and respawn in the red bricks
4 - To open the quick menu
5 - To switch to Boomer

This video is an improvement from my last video on Chapter 3-1 where I completed the chapter in 7x "2" Presses. You can find the video here: youtu.be/_7DTk_XnUoE
Since then, I was able to reroute the game to remove the Boomer swap originally present in this segment. Due to leaving Post Chapter 2 with Boomer, we can play through the entire segment without needing to switch Pixls, saving 2x "2 presses". In addition, I make use of a HBB to climb the first castle. There's a chance that I could use a second HBB to cross the underground pit, but I would need one more HP than I currently have to pull that strategy off.
Aside from the new discoveries, Chapter 3-1 is quite simple due to its short length. There's a special case after the underground section where using a convenient hole in 3D allows Mario to bounce off of the soccer shells and, by using careful navigation, allows Mario to clear the hard blocks at the start of the third section. From there, a few bullet bill bounces clear the rest of the level.
This video features a modified view (at 6:17) to help better visualize the home buffer bounces. This modified view edits out the home menus for a more fluid viewing experience.

This video is an improvement from my last video on Post Chapter 1 where I completed the chapter in 9x "2" Presses. You can find the video here: youtu.be/JfxJcNTWfC8
Since then, I discovered a new trick called "home buffer bounces". Normally, Mario cannot bounce off of enemies after taking damage to enemies. However, if Mario takes damage from the 3D meter, Mario is then allowed to bounce off of enemies again. The difficult part is that the 3D meter resets when taking damage, so normally this can never happen. However, if the home menu is pressed, the timer that ticks down the 3D meter continues while in the pause menu. We can abuse this to rapidly tick the 3D meter down in game-time. This allows us to take 3D meter damage very shortly after getting knocked back, allowing us to bounce off of an enemy. I did this three times throughout the segment to gain height in places that I wouldn't be able to otherwise.
This video introduces a new problem, switching characters. To switch characters, you need to first open up the quick menu (or open the main menu using + then selecting characters) and then choose the character you want to switch to. This takes 2x "2" Presses. Therefore, we need to switch characters as few times as possible. Luckily, there are plenty of glitches and exploits to prevent changing characters.
This chapter doesn't feature any glitches besides HBBs so no further explanation is needed.
This video features three modified views (at 10:33, 10:40, and 10:47) to help better visualize the home buffer bounces. This modified view edits out the home menus for a more fluid viewing experience.

I did this in both the second room and the O'Chunks boss fight room to save 2x "2 presses" over the old route.
In addition, I also do "Blue Pedestal Skip" in the final room. This is done by landing on a thin ledge by the structure that only exists in 3D. By running on this ledge after landing on it, we can then position Mario under the Star Block in 2D and then jump into it while the structure is still down. This does not save any "2 presses" but it does save a few seconds so I thought I would showcase it.

Video Notes:
Without the B button, Kirby is stripped of both his jump and his hover. This means that Kirby needs to find new ways to gain height. In the very first room, Kirby is stuck without any way to get out. The only enemy Kirby can reach B pressless is a Waddle Doo which turns Kirby into Beam Kirby. Beam Kirby doesn't offer any advantages over Normal Kirby. I, instead, create a CPU helper which can give us height through a friend bounce. I have to press B once to start the bounce. By repeatedly jumping on the helper, Kirby can make it to the end of the first room.
The second room also has Kirby grounded with no ledges to initiate a friend bounce. I instead scroll the screen far enough to spawn a Poppy Bro Jr. The Poppy Bro Jr. throws a bomb at Kirby which launces him to the closest ledge. We then use the height to initiate a friend bounce B pressless. Kirby also becomes Bomb Kirby from the Poppy Bro Sr. miniboss fight.
The third room, yet again, starts Kirby grounded with no ledges, but by using Bomb Kirby's bomb, I can again launch Kirby to a semi-solid platform to initiate a friend bounce.
Finally, the fourth room starts as a vertical falling section so by manipulating the CPU helper to be below Kirby, I can string a continuous friend bounce throughout the entire Whispy Woods fight to stay in the air to grab the ending star; finishing the level.
B Presses:
1 - To gain height to bounce off of the CPU helper
Challenge Notes:
This is the Kirby Super Star: B Button Challenge. The goal of the challenge is to complete Kirby Super Star while pressing the "B button" as few times as possible. FINALLY the stairs have been beaten... kind of...
Video Notes:
This video is an improvement from my last video on Chapter 1-4 where I completed the chapter in 16x "2" Presses. You can find the video here: youtu.be/mAfXOYbhDVs
Since then, I decided to look into the staircase before the Fracktail fight as it was the most "2 press" heavy part of the level. I noticed that the staircase has 20 steps in total. Mario's jump height is able to clear 5 steps in a single jump so, at most, it would take 4x "2 presses" to climb. However, Mario's jump normally can't travel 5 steps in a single jump HORIZONTALLY, barely missing the 5th step. This is because Mario loses his momentum on the step in front of him if he tries to jump later. In the last video, I first do a 5 step jump from the ground as I am not blocked by the staircase in 3D. I then do four 4 step jumps to clear the staircase. This time however, I am able to do four 5 step jumps all the way up the staircase, saving a "2 press". The key difference is running a little off the staircase to the right. When running, Mario can be around 10 units over a floor's hitbox without falling. Using this, I am able to get enough speed to make each 5 step jump horizontally without getting blocked by the staircase itself.
The chapter also features plenty of other glitches that have further explanation in the previous video's description (as I can't fit all the explanations here due to character limit).
This video features a modified view (at 11:54) to help better visualize the Fracktail fight. This is a zoomed-out perspective to better show what Mario is doing and how high he bounces in relation to Fracktail. This modified view also edits out the home menus for a more fluid viewing experience.

Turns out getting a life is harder than I thought...
Video Notes:
This video is an updated version of my last video on Chapter 2-3 which accounts for recent route changes in 1-4. You can find the previous version here: youtu.be/n7nPP8r85pc
The second room in 1-4 now can be completed in 0x "2 presses" by using two damage boosts, one from the fire bar in the middle of the room and another from a spawned megabite. However, this change in route adds an extra "2 press" to get the Life Shroom which is shown during the setup of this video. This is why the count for this chapter went up from 19x to 20x.
Once again, this chapter is very short if you know the solution to the chapter. Here, we can skip the entirety of the chapter by pre-emptively knowing the password to the 1 million ruby vault. One thing to note is that we cannot just grind the ruby rooms for 1 million rubies to pay off the debt. This is because there's a cap of 18000 rubies for each run-through of the VIP room. Each time, we need to press "2" to initiate a run-through, which easily negates any "2 press" saves by beating the chapter this way.

The craziest strats yet.
Video Notes:
This video is an improvement from my last video on Chapter 1-4 where I completed the chapter in 21x "2" Presses. You can find the video here: youtu.be/4RmH6Qw8hFE
Since then, three discoveries were made. Firstly, I realized that I could clear the second room without pressing "2". I accomplish this by using two damage boosts, one from the fire bar in the center of the room and another by the spawned megabite. I didn't use this strategy before because I didn't have the health needed to damage boost. This was solved with a planned level up (shown during setup). Do note that we still need the Life Shroom which takes 1x 2 Press but that will be shown in the 2-3 video.
The second discovery was in the red block puzzle room. I experimented with both hitting a block with Thoreau and jumping at the same time, but I didn't have good results. This was because Mario was throwing Thoreau too high. I then realized that Thoreau's height is in relationship to Mario's speed. But if Mario's speed is too low, he won't be able to land on the block. To finally accomplish this feat, I use skidding to both lower Mario's speed and keep his momentum to land on the block while hitting the adjacent block with Thoreau. This is done twice to save 2x "2 presses".
The last, and most insane, discovery was during the Fracktail fight. Here, I use a double midair bounce to skip the second and third jumps needed to complete the fight. There are three variables that I needed to account for when doing this double midair bounce: Mario's X position, Mario's Y position, and the frame Mario lands on Fracktail's antenna. The X position needs to be higher than -480 and the Y position needs to be higher than 1320 to damage Fracktail. Also, Mario must be in this position AFTER Fracktail's body is completely flat for the hit to count. To achieve all these conditions, I manipulate the Frackles in the perfect position for the first midair bounce. For the second midair bounce, I use the home menu to lower the 3D meter to perfectly time 3D damage to perform the second midair bounce.
The rest of the strategies involve clever enemy positions and damage boosts that don't need further explanation.
This video features a modified view (at 11:54) to help better visualize the Fracktail fight. This is a zoomed-out perspective to better show what Mario is doing and how high he bounces in relation to Fracktail. This modified view also edits out the home menus for a more fluid viewing experience.

We truly master Green Bridge Skip
Video Notes:
This video is an improvement from my last video on Chapter 1-2 where I completed the chapter in 17x "2" Presses. You can find the video here: youtu.be/qmx5Cq2E1gI
Since then, I understood how OOB works and used my knowledge to save 2x 2 Presses from GBS. It seems that Mario has 10 units of leniency when he is running before he starts falling off of a ledge. I originally used this fact to go around the two pipes in GBS. However, I originally concluded that going around the table in the first house and the dresser in the third house was impossible due to the wall hitbox extending out to the edge of the seams. But, by using careful navigation, we can go around these two furniture items by changing directions while still running which allows Mario to just barely go around the furniture while staying on the seam. Using this we can save the two jumps over the doors of the first and third house.
The first modified view (at 2:57) lights up the room that Mario is currently in as the game doesn't normally do this. This was achieved by splicing together 5 different GBS attempts, each with a different room lit up.
The second modified view (at 3:37) is a zoomed-out perspective to better illustrate how high Mario climbs OOB. This modified view also uses hacks to light up the main area.

This video is an improvement from my last video on Chapter 1-2 where I completed the chapter in 21x "2" Presses. You can find the video here: youtu.be/ZpmKXCHtvvk
Since then, a new method of Green Bridge Skip was found and optimized. Originally, the only way to skip the Green Bridge was to do a Life Shroom Jump (LSJ) to double jump over the pit. This was inaccessible for the 2 Button Challenge (2BC) because it required getting a Life Shroom which could only be obtained by the shop at this point in the game. Buying an item from the shop takes at least 5x "2 presses", which on top of the 2x "2 presses" to actually perform the LSJ and the presses needed to collect the 50 coins to buy the Life Shroom, cost more "2 presses" than what the LSJ would save. However, a new GBS method found by mohoc which uses the shop clip to go out of bounds (OOB) and traverse to a "weird plane" allowed Mario to gain an abnormal amount of height that allows him to clear the gap in a single jump. Navigating to this plane took a few additional "2 presses" as the doors and pipes leading to the plane would push Mario out of the OOB seam and fall to the death plane. However, I managed to shave 2x "2 presses" from the known method by managing to stay OOB while going around the pipe outside and by also going around the seam of the third house to avoid needing to jump over the third door.
2 Presses:
1 - To jump into the ladder block
2 - To jump to the ladder
3 - To jump onto the prize blocks
4 - To jump to the hard blocks above the prize blocks
5 - To jump to the top row of hard blocks
6 - To jump to the platform with the door past the spiny tromps
7 - To jump into the pipe leading to the background path to Red's House
8 - To jump to Red's staircase
9 - To jump to the second floor of Red's house
10 - To answer Red's question
11 - To jump into the pipe leading to the foreground area of Ye Old Town
12 - To jump up the small staircase leading to Ye Old Town
13 - To jump over the door of the second house
14 - To jump over the door of the forth house
15 - To jump over the large gap normally crossed by the green bridge
16 - To jump into the star block
17 - To save the game

As 8-4 strips the party of all characters except for Mario, the platforming once again becomes manageable. With the use of Mario + Thudley, all of the platforming sections can be performed fairly standardly. I do need to switch to Dottie for the first and only time to get a key, but aside from the pixl swaps and the key prompt, there isn't any need to press "2".
There's a maze in this level that doesn't require any jumping even in casual play and one last staircase that can be cleared with Thudley. From there, it's only a boss gauntlet to the credits.

One last gauntlet before the end.
Video Notes:
Chapter 8-3 is a tricky level. Several mazes, puzzles, and a goose chase at the end of it all. This chapter requires character and pixl management. Here, I try to minimize the amount of times I need to switch to Luigi by using Thudley Jumps. I also don't switch to Thudley in the chase sequence as keeping Slim out is ideal, even though it may cost a few jumps.

8-2 is a very puzzle-centric chapter. There's a section that requires using multiple pixls, a section that requires falling for a certain trap, and a puzzle to avoid Mimi's tricks. I can thankfully skip the multiple pixl puzzle by performing multiple TJs to grab the key early. I still have to go through multiple dialogue prompts in this chapter which is what takes up most of the "2 presses".

Chapter 8-1 is a very standard chapter with not much going on. There are many times I have to switch characters that, unfortunately, have no workarounds as of now. While I can use TJs to skip needing to switch to Luigi and Peach at the start, the "2 presses" to perform the TJs don't save any "2 presses" in the long run. Both TJs and switching characters actually take the same number of "2 presses" but I decided to go with character swaps as we don't get to see Peach as often. TJing should still be considered as there's a possibility of skipping Peach in 7-3. The rest of the chapter is straightforward and doesn't require any further explanation.

7-4 involves a very long fetch quest that we can actually skip quite easily. By doing both Elevator Skip and Rainbow Bridge Skip, Mario can skip the entirety of the fetch quest and go straight to the end of the chapter. Elevator Skip and Rainbow Bridge Skip just involve Mario Thudley Jumping to normally inaccessible areas. I minimize the "2 presses" for Rainbow Bridge skip by abusing Thudley Hovers to just barely make it across in only 4x "2 presses". The rest of the chapter plays out normally, except for Bonechill where we fight him a little unorthodox.

We save Peach from eternal slumber only to immediately avoid using her at all costs.
Video Notes:
7-3 goes about as you would expect with platforming with Luigi. The challenge of the chapter comes from minimizing character swaps. Luigi should be our active character throughout this chapter as his super jump trivializes any challenge. However, there are several times in this chapter where the game wants me to switch to Mario or Peach. For the black apple, I have to switch to Mario because the door is in a different layer inaccessible to Luigi. For the other obstacles in the level, I used some tricks to skip needing to switch characters.
To skip needing to go into 3D to cross a brick block bridge, I lure a Ruff Puff with Luigi to bounce across the gap. Using Thudley Hovers, I can air stall long enough to just barely make it across the gap.
To skip needing to float across the gap normally only traversable with Peach, I use a Life Shroom to cancel Luigi's super jump state so I can Thudley Hover across the gap after reaching max height with the super jump. To use the Life Shroom midair, I do need to use a Poison Shroom to get Luigi's health to zero. I pick up a Poison Shroom earlier in the chapter from a Zombie Shroom.
Despite not needing Peach in this chapter, I do need to still get Peach to spawn Cyrus to finish the chapter. I also use Peach later in the game in 8-1. Unlike Pixl skips, characters do not magically appear in the party after a chapter is finished. Also, Peach Skip isn't possible without pressing "2" a lot so I do not go for that route here.

7-2 plays exactly the same as a casual run but with Luigi's super jump replacing any jump requirements. Because flipping isn't required for this chapter, we can just use Luigi and not have to worry about swapping characters constantly.
The Underchomp fight is special because it's the only turn-based battle in the game. Like with most menuing, selecting actions requires the "2 button" so defeating the boss in as few actions as possible is key. Luckily, using a Shooting Star ends the fight in just one action and only costs 2x "2 presses", making it the most optimal way to defeat the Underchomp.
While the chapter has many, many prompts, there isn't much to improve besides the two "2 presses" to swap to Luigi at the beginning. All other "2 presses" are the result of dialogue, prompts, keys, and saving. Sequence breaking is the only hope for saving more "2 presses".

60x "2" Presses, a small price to pay for Luigi.
Video Notes:
Underwhere is a unique segment as Mario is stripped from his pixls and from Peach and Bowser. Therefore, we are very limited when it comes to movement options. Luckily for us, Mario's items do carry over to this segment so I have some room to work with.
The main platforming room can be navigated surprisingly well with only one jump to cross the largest pit in the room. A huge issue comes from the puzzle segment of this chapter, the underwater switch puzzle. But I can avoid needing to swim by using LSJs to progress without needing the water raised.
This segment gives us Luigi, which you may think is a good thing but it's actually more troublesome as we then need to switch between Mario and Luigi to progress through the game; with each switch costing 2x "2 presses".
Most unfortunate is the swimming to get out of the river. There currently isn't a clean way to leave the river without swimming a handful of times, but by using a Poison Shroom to cancel Luigi's super jump, I can cut out several swim inputs. I also use a Life Shroom to prevent Luigi from dying from the Poison Shroom.

Chapter 6 is very straightforward but I should explain why I switch to Bowser. This is only because I cannot deal any damage to spiked enemies with Mario + Thudley. I must keep Thudley as my active pixl so I can climb the stairs before each fight, so I switched to Bowser to win the fights against the spiked enemies. Furthermore, this swap only costs 2x "2 presses" as opposed to the normal 4x as we do not need Mario until the game forces us to be Mario in the Underwhere segment.

After unlocking our final Pixl, we have a blast trying to manage our Pixl swaps!
Video Notes:
You might be wondering why I do not use Thudley for the first part of this segment. That is because I need to use Cudge twice to break open the two Cudge blocks to the heart pillar. Thudley would be able to cross most of the obstacles without needing to press "2", but switching to Thudley then back to Cudge would cost 4x "2 presses", and switching to Thudley would only save 3x "2 presses", so that route is suboptimal. This is why I need two Life Shrooms. Because I do not have Thudley as my active pixl, I cannot Thudley Jump, so I farmed for two Life Shrooms in 4-2 to perform two LSJs to navigate to the heart pillar in the fewest number of "2 presses". Once I break both Cudge blocks, however, I then switch back to Thudley and continue the segment as how you may expect.
2 Presses:
1 - To open the pixls menu
2 - To switch to Cudge
3 - To jump to the pipe that leads to first floor Flopside

Scanner skip got a new update!
Video Notes:
This video is an improvement from my last video on Chapter 5-4 where I completed the chapter in 9x "2" Presses. You can find the video here: youtu.be/8BxlMpYMSIo
Since then, I realized that the final jump at the end of scanner skip isn't actually necessary. Instead, Mario can simply fall OOB as long as Mario moves far enough in the X direction while in 3D. From there, the rest of scanner skip remains the same and, thus, saves 1x "2 press"
Chapter 5-4 is normally a very long chapter with many different segments and objectives, but with the recently found scanner skip, we can skip almost all of the chapter. This can be done by getting past the scanner without needing the Floral Sprout. This is achieved by clipping out of bounds using a gold bar and setting our respawn point to be inside the scanner. Afterward, Mario activates the scanner and falls OOB. This activates the scanner but doesn't knock Mario back as he is being respawned. Then, Mario spawns back inside the scanner and is then able to move to the door. From there, the rest of the chapter can be achieved without needing to press "2" at all using Thudley.
The setup for Scanner Skip does take 7x "2 presses" but is way more optimal over the normal route which requires getting Dottie and requires a lot of platforming and menuing.
This video features a pixl skip (Dottie in this case). Dottie is one of 5 pixls that are skippable in Super Paper Mario. This is because if we manage to beat the intended chapter without gaining the pixl, the game gives the pixl to you after the chapter is over in a short dialogue sequence.

Who needs minecarts when you have legs of steel?
Video Notes:
5-3 is split into four main segments. The first segment is to find the camera guy. This segment is straightforward but we do not ride the minecart. This is because I need to press "2" to confirm the minecart ride and press "2" again after the minecart ride to recover from the knockback at the end. This is why I forgo the minecart, even though I need to thudley jump over the rails.
The second segment is a lot more interesting. To get the mic man, I need to go across the tracks, but this time large stalactites block Mario from trespassing without the minecart. So I simply just ride the minecart both ways. Getting to the mic man involves some clever positioning of the headless Floro Sapiens. I visit the room twice, once to activate the ladder block and the second to actually get to the mic man. This is because I need to reload the enemies to successfully navigate the room.
The third segment is to get back to Flint Cragley after retrieving his crew. I get poisoned along the way, which is very intentional. This is because I need to bounce off of a buzzy beetle that falls from the ceiling. Normally, a grounded Thudley jump doesn't bring Mario far enough horizontally to make the gap, but with a well-timed poison damage to cancel the ground pound, Mario can make it to the buzzy beetle.
The last segment is straightforward and doesn't require any further explanation, though I do end the chapter with Cudge as I do not need Thudley at the start of 5-4. So even though I need to jump into the star block, the lack of a pixl swap makes this route optimal.

Water? Earth? Fire? It matters not. Your attempts at saving "2" Presses are paper thin.
Video Notes:
Chapter 5-2 features a little bit of everything, and, as such, features a lot of "2 presses". First of all, this is the second part of the game where I have to deal with water. Surprisingly, by spawning a megabite, I can grab the water tablet without needing to swim at all by repeatedly bouncing off of the spawned megabite.
From there, however, things don't go so swimmingly (pun intended). For the fire tablet, I need to switch to Bowser and back, which adds several menuing "2 presses". The stone tablet can be collected as normal without any additional "2 presses". The majority of the "2 presses" come from the final part of the chapter, which is climbing the main tower to get Cudge. Currently, there isn't a way to scale this tower without jumping a bunch of times. However, I do save 1x "2 press" by doing Thudley Jumps to the top.
You might have noticed that this segment is done on the Japanese version of the game. This isn't because of some Japanese exclusive glitch, but rather how Cudge's prompt works. For some reason, the English version requires you to input a phrase that's 8 characters long. The Japanese version, on the other hand, allows a phrase of four characters in length, which saves 4x "2 presses". This means that the Japanese vesrion is the optimal version for the 2 Button Challenge, but I will continue to play on the English version for the sake of familiarity.

Following Chapter 4, the next place I need to go is Flopside. Accessing Flopside requires me to use Fleep which requires me to switch Pixls, which is where all the "2 presses" in this segment come from. The Fleep requirement TECHNICALLY isn't mandatory due to the glitch "Flopside Early", but the current method takes too many "2 presses" to be viable.
In the mirror hall, I use the same trick as I did with the gravity blocks in 4-4 to hit the colored blocks. The rest of the chapter is self-explanatory.

We experience the pain of playing a space shooter without the shooting part.
Video Notes:
4-4 is a straightforward chapter with several uses of Thudley Jumping to get around, but not in ways you might expect. Outside of what we've seen before, there are two cases during this chapter where we use Thudley unexpectedly.
The first is when I need to backtrack after getting the second key. I can only leave the room when the gravity is normal, so I have to find a way to ascend to the higher floor without jumping. Doing a grounded Thudley jump doesn't bring Mario high enough so it seems impossible. However, Mario can bounce off of the Tileoids from any side, regardless of whether they are on the ceiling. So I flip in midair using Thudley to clip into the ceiling and bounce off of a Tileoid to make it the rest of the way up to the door.
The second case is when I need to flip gravity using a gravity block. Normally, Mario cannot activate a gravity block using a grounded Thudley jump. However, if we do a grounded Thudley Jump in 3D then flip back to 2D while we are inside the block, we can activate it by falling through the block. This cannot be done in the room after selecting the second key as the gravity blocks are too high off the ground.
I decided to speed up the boss fight for the sake of this video, but you can watch the full unedited boss fight in the unabridged version found here: youtu.be/aSR_sKQfapw

Video Notes:
For 4-3, we do not deviate from the normal, intended path. One thing worth noting is the shop. Unlike most other shops in the game, we do not have to learn about how to use the shop, even though this is the first shop we visited. Furthermore, we do not have to say we want to buy at this shop as buying is the only option. Therefore, we only need 3x "2 presses" to buy the Chocobar needed to progress. As it stands, there is no way to get a Chocobar prior to this chapter so we cannot skip this interaction.
2 Presses:
1 - To squish Squirps in the first gate
2 - To select the Chocobar from the shop
3 - To confirm the purchase
4 - To exit the shop menu
5 - To squeeze Squirps in the second gate
6 - To select the Chocobar

Introducing the corner clip! We can now explore the out of bounds!
Video Notes:
Now that we're back on the ground, and with very low gravity, we can start pulling off some complex tricks. Firstly, this is a good time to introduce a new mechanic, Thudley Hovers (as if Thudley wasn't broken enough). By repeatedly starting and canceling ground pounds with Thudley, we could decrease our gravity and cross larger distances with Thudley. We first use this to reach the outhouse's roof from the starting area. We'll use this many, many more times throughout the run so be on the lookout.
The second thing to introduce is the corner clip. By positioning Mario into the right part of any corner while falling, we could clip out of bounds. We use this in the second room to go around the first large mountain without needing to switch to Slim, saving 3x "2 presses". Corner clips don't show up that often due to the need to crouch jump which is a 1x "2 press" cost.
Lastly, we use our good friend the Megabite a few times throughout the level. Like previous times, we use the Megabite to repeatedly bounce across large gaps and scale large heights. Note that we cannot summon the Megabite in the first room until we are a certain ways into the level, which is why we don't use a Megabite to cross the first gap "2 pressless".
As a final note, we do not switch back to Thudley after unlocking Fleep as we will need to use Fleep at the start of 4-3. So not switching saves us 4x "2 presses" in total, even though traversing the final area with Fleep adds on 2x "2 presses".
2 Presses:
1 - To jump over the first gap
2 - To corner clip
3 - To jump around the mountain in the second room
4 - To deny Blappy's first offer
5 - To accept Blappy's second offer
6 - To give Fleep the ancient clue
7 - To jump up to the cliff next to the outhouse
8 - To select the key
9 - To jump into the star block
10 - To save the game

Video Notes:
4-1 is another extremely basic chapter. The only thing worth explaining is the use of the "2 button" in these space shooter sections. The "2 button" shoots projectiles from Squirps's mouth. For now, there is no reason to attack any enemies so we're safe to go through space without using the "2 button". Later though... well that's a different story.

1 - To put on the space helmet
2 - To respond to Squirps's request
3 - To save the game

Video Notes:
Post Chapter 3 is extremely basic with no explanation needed. However, remember that we are routing this game with the full game run in mind. This means that we could start PC3 with Mario and Thudley already selected to save 4x "2 presses" but then it would add "2 presses" in other segments so it wouldn't actually save anything in the grand scheme of things.
2 Presses:
1 - To open the characters menu
2 - To switch to Mario
3 - To open the pixls menu

3 Keys, 20 Questions, 2 Passcodes, and a Pixl Skip
Video Notes:
3-4 is a nightmare for the 2BC purely from all the questions and passcodes in the level. In total, there are normally 34 "2 presses" required to finish this chapter just from the keys, passcodes, and question prompts. We skip three of these by performing Carrie skip. Routing-wise, Carrie skip saves several "2 presses" as we don't need to keep switching between Thudley and Carrie, but the cost is 8x "2 presses" to traverse the spike pit using TJs. However, after considering all options, Carrie skip is still the optimal route.
Outside of the Pixl skip, there aren't any more notable tricks in this chapter other than the countless times we abuse Thudley Jumps.
This video features a pixl skip (Carrie in this case). Carrie is one of 5 pixls that are skippable in Super Paper Mario. This is because if we manage to beat the intended chapter without gaining the pixl, the game gives the pixl to you after the chapter is over in a short dialogue sequence.

A vertical puzzle level. What shenanigans will we pull this time?
Video Notes:
Being a strictly vertical level, 3-3 is a huge obstacle for the 2BC. Here, we see another trick with Thudley, Thudely Jumps, or TJs. Canceling Thudley's ground pound in the air allows 1 frame where Mario can flip midair, allowing Mario to jump midair. Chaining TJs allows for infinite height which is used here to skip certain puzzles in the tree. Other than abusing TJs, there isn't much in this level that's out of the ordinary.
2 Presses:
1 - To Thudley Jump (TJ) to the first set of hard blocks
2 - To TJ to the paratroopa
