EPISODE 2Riding Buell Motorcycles Super Crusier PrototypeHot Bike2024-04-13 | The @buellmotorcycle2661 Super Cruiser prototype is unlike anything we’ve ever experienced. As a production vehicle the Super Cruiser is hard to beat right now. The entire package is tight and everything works harmoniously: suspension, braking, acceleration, cornering. It’s just fluid and ticks the boxes for a complete riding experience. Hammering on the throttle is instantaneous fun. Halting the bike is immediate as well. It’s just smooth overall. We think Buell’s new Super Cruiser will do wonders for the future of performance cruisers and the customers who are seeking something truly unique.
For the naysayers out there skeptical that the prototype isn’t as cool as the @RolandSandsDesign concept… don’t knock it til you try it.

We sent our man, Alex Chapman, to document the experience first-hand.
Who is Cristian Sosa, you might be asking, and why would people want him to teach them how to shape and mold metal into something artistic or functional or both? Well, Cristian seems like the guy in the background making everyone else’s shit look cool, but not the all- eyes-on-me-kinda guy. Cristian is the humble type but possesses all the talent in the world. “I’ve been working in these shops since I was 15 years old,” Cristian says. “So, I’ve been doing the metal shaping thing for about 24 years, something like that, and metal shaping is kind of my specialty.” But let’s not forget about some of the incredibly cool hand-built motorcycles Cristian has built through the years.Kyle Ray Rices FXR Shovelhead Chop from Vol. 3 2023 Hot Bike MagazineHot Bike2023-11-18 | Kyle Rice has learned a lot about the bike builder’s craft over the years, growing and overcoming its inherent challenges to be the craftsman who turned this 1992 Harley-Davidson FXR into a pretty cool chopper. Or, as he tells it, “I wanted to challenge myself and push my limits; feel the pressure. I wanted to be perfect but quickly realized that wasn’t happening. I wanted to become a better fabricator (and show what I’ve learned over the last few years), be a better sheet metal shaper, a better painter, and a better upholsterer than I was. I feel like I’ve dreamt of this bike for years, waiting to find my style and build up the skill level to actually make it happen. I’ve been chasing this one for a while.” His history with chopped iron goes back a couple of generations. Kyle’s grandfather also built choppers way back in the day, like sketchy long chops in the ’60s in Southern Illinois. He had Harleys, BSAs, and Triumphs. He messed around with everything mechanical, and so did Kyle’s father. Unfortunately, grandfather passed away a year after Kyle was born. That left Kyle with stories and photos. “I wanted to build this bike to keep that flame burning. I think my grandfather would be proud of this one.” See the full feature and learn more about Kyle Rice's story in the current issue of Hot Bike Magazine at store.hotbike.com/products/hot-bike-2023-volume-3-usa-only-1 or sign up for a full subscription and support independent publishing at store.hotbike.com/products/hot-bike-2023-print-digital-subscription-usa-only

With Trask Performance's Tornado Turbo kit exclusively from Drag Specialties, now you can in an easy and efficient manner. We trekked over to Trask Performance's HQ in Phoenix, AZ to get the new Tornado installed on our project 2022 Harley-Davidson Low Rider ST. In a few hours, we were able to bolt on about 30 more horsies and 40 foot-pounds of torque. Not bad for an afternoon in the desert! The Dual Sport Sportster from December 1991 Hot BikeHot Bike2023-10-20 | EDITOR’S NOTE: We’ve been fans of this Dual Sport Sportster ever since it graced the cover of Hot Bike back in 1991. Well, it just so happened a little birdie (Mark Atkins aka the Butcher) hipped us to the Dual Sport Sporty’s current whereabouts. As it turned out it remained relatively unchanged, and it was in impeccable condition. In fact, the dual Sporty was getting ridden quite a bit by the current owner, a 78-years-young Bob Scott of Hesperia, California. We had to go out and pay Mr. Scott a visit to see how the bike was holding up. After an afternoon of photographing Bob ripping through the high desert on the dually, we knew this bike and its story were worth another feature. It just so happened that we tracked down previous editor, Buck Lovell, to write the follow-up piece to his original article from 1991. Enjoy.Hot Bikes Tech Tips featuring Danny Wilson: Drivetrain ComponentsHot Bike2023-10-18 | In this installment of Hot Bike's Tech Tips featuring Danny "Motorwitch" Wilson, we dive into the drive and clutch upgrades you might need when adding horsepower or torque performance.
In our last installment, we covered the first service on a Milwaukee-Eight Harley-Davidson (in Touring and Softail configurations). In this installment, I am going to cover the commonly overlooked items that are impacted when adding horsepower, the factory big twin compensator and the factory clutch. I’ll break down the differences between the stock parts versus the more performance-oriented drive components. But first... I hear a lot from our customers, and it seems to be the opinion of the “master tech” on the forum, but a lot of people seem to think that stock Harley parts are shit. This is not the case. Stock parts are designed to handle the bike in the stock configuration, and they do so very well. When you start to build more power some of the supporting components simply aren’t designed to take that kind of abuse. Because our Low Rider ST is getting the Trask Turbo treatment it will be making far more power than the stock compensator and clutch were engineered to take, which is what we’re changing them out.
Let’s talk about exactly why we’re changing the compensator and clutch out. One of the first parts that will fail with more power is the compensator. The compensator is basically a ramp system with springs. It is designed to absorb the shock from acceleration and deceleration. If the compensator is deleted that shock will be absorbed by the clutch hub bearing which will fail rapidly. Aside from the mechanical use, it also provides you with a smooth power delivery and a much more pleasant riding experience.
For this we are using a Baker Drivetrain (bakerdrivetrain.com) compensator assembly, which has a decreased ramp lobe diameter which significantly reduce velocities on the part, ultimately reducing wear. The radial width of the ramp lobe is increased which reduces the PSI loading, again increasing the lobe of the part and reducing wear. There are seven supporting spokes that structurally tie the inner ramp to the hub of the sprocket.
The mass of the sprocket is concentrated towards the center so that the ‘flywheel effect’ is minimized, which reduces operational noise. The parts are all made in America of heat treated 4140 steel alloy.
The next component is the clutch. I’m sure most of you know what a clutch is and how it works, but we’ll cover it anyway. The clutch in a big twin is a basket with starter ring gear, a hub pressed into a bearing, and a series of plates that are friction and steel.
Evolution Industries’ (evolution-industries.com) clutch assembly is my go-to clutch for many reasons. The main clutch components are made of forged 7076 steel, which automatically trumps some of the weaknesses of the stock configuration. When you get this clutch, it’s complete. I simply soak the plates in ATF, install it and I’m done.
The Evolution clutch also has multiple options for spring pressure. The default springs handle up to 150 horsepower, but the heavy springs can handle up to 240 horsepower. You can also use different spring rates to get lower effort without sacrificing performance.
This setup is as good as it gets for your bike, so if you’re planning on building some power this will sort out your primary drive. Please check out the video that accompanies this article, which provides the step-by-step installation so that if you decide to do this yourself you can do so after purchasing a few tools you may not have. We’re already working on more videos for you guys so until next time stay tuned and ride safe.FXR Divisions Pan America Sport TourerHot Bike2023-07-28 | The Harley-Davidson Pan America is one unique motorcycle, especially for the Motor Company. The guys at FXR Division didn't see it as an eyesore or a mis-step from the Milwaukee manufacuring juggernaut, no. They saw an opportunity to redefine what an American-made touring machine could and should be. With that being said, the once polarizing Harley ADV, is leaps and bounds one of the most thoughtful and cutting-edge customs we've seen in quite some time. When H-D approached FXR Division to participate in their HD120 celebration with a brand-new Pan America to build to their liking, they jumped at the opportunity. Our man on the street (not literally), Rob Fortier, happened to be out in Phoenix this past January, right after they got the notification from H-D, though it wouldn’t be till the end of February that they took delivery of the ’22 Pan America, leaving them but four months to design, execute, and complete the bar-raising build for its debut at the 14th Annual Born-Free Show! Tthis was a total collective effort to produce one show-stopping bike, and to properly give credit where credit’s due, I gave the three gentlemen behind the beast the opportunity to do so in their own words, which you'll have to read in the all-new Hot Bike magazine ON SALE NOW!

But there is that 1% chance we take the missus out for a putt here and there. Because the factory bike doesn't accommodate a passenger with pegs and a passenger seat (solo seat comes standard on Low Rider ST), well, we took it upon ourselves to remedy that scenario quickly by adding some passenger footpegs, a two-up touring Sundowner Seat and sissy bar and luggage rack if we wanted to trek for a weekend or more. Here's what we selected to get the job done super quick and easily. You can knock this out on your own in about an hour or two with basic tools. Summer is here and it's time to hit the road. These two are competitive, sure, but they're both passionate about motorcycles and racing. And they get to share that experience with each other, which is pretty freakin' cool. The Return of Hot Bike MagazineHot Bike2023-05-02 | It's no easy feat resurrecting a magazine. There are a lot of considerations that go into it. Timing is key. Support is crucial. And good old hard work is absolutely necessary. But it really just boils down to two things: being too stupid to know when to quit, and having the right people in your corner that also see the potential to also be too stupid to know when to quit. And then everyone involved collectively pouring every ounce of everything they have into it in order to see it come to fruition. That's all!
Luckily for us, the stars just seemed to align. With the right support from great partners, and the faithful Hot Bike subscribers and fans, we were able to accomplish our goals of bringing this iconic 52-year-old magazine back to life once again. It's pretty damn surreal.
So surreal in fact, we had to document the first issue being printed at the plant. Our new printing partners were such gracious hosts and have been in the game for as long as we have, so it was a cool experience to commemorative this historic moment in Hot Bike's history. And we've only just begun.
A big thank you to our resident videographer, Alex Chapman, aka @native.photo on Instagram. He knocked this video out of the park. XOXO, Alex. No, it's not a Lorax character (Zooz, not Seuss). It's a rad new e-bike that's capturing the attention of riders young and old. Mix the styling of a '80s BMX ripper add a healthy does of motorcycle soul and equip it with a punchy, long-lasting electric motor... well, you'd have the formula for one badass e-bike. Welcome to Zooz.
We've been eyeing the Zooz bikes since they launched a couple years ago and wanted to get our hands on one for the staff kids rummaging around HQ. You know, those that aren't quite old enough for Harleys, but obviously will be one day. It's all about planting that seed in a kid's mind to get he or she excited for what's next. Which was exactly our thought when we saw the Zooz Ultra Urban 1100. How can we help get kids to get out there and rip and have fun on two wheels? Well, Zooz figured out the solution. Of course, a couple of us were itching to try them out too.
First of all, the Zooz is quick. Like really quick. Once at speed, it wants to keep going. I think I clocked 34 mph on a downhill with the throttle fully pressed. It was thrilling. The Zooz is also versatile because it's equipped with standard BMX style pedals, and pedal assist technology to conserve battery life, or to simply pedal if you want a little exercise to move your tired old bones. Or your young bones. The battery life is pretty much infinite. Our tester in this video spent the entire day riding the Zooz all around town as his mode of transport. The power level dropped by one bar. All in all, the Zooz Ultra Urban 1100 is a great mode of transportation, for younger kids, or for adults that just want to have fun.
If you've been thinking about adding a Zooz to your lineup. Definitely do so. You won't be disappointed.

Whether it's a bicycle or a dirt bike we appreciate that kids are still interested in getting off the couch and out there and about to continue that evolution of growing the motorcycle industry. It all starts somewhere and I think a lot of the e-bike companies out there are doing some great things to keep kids stoked on riding.
We've been wanting to try one of Stacyc's H-D 18E Drive Launch Edition bikes for our kids for a while. Stacyc was gracioius enough to send us one of their Stacyc / Harley-Davidson collabs to try out. Simply put, this little e-bike packs quite a punch and definitely succeeded in getting our 10-year-old off the couch and outside shredding the gnar.Bell Helmet Interviews: Steve from Speed-Kings CycleHot Bike2022-10-25 | We caught up with Steve from Speed-King's Cycle during the Born-Free 13 Motorcycle Show to check in on what he's been up to. Once I get it on the dolly, it’s pretty damn easy to spin it around. Their proprietary design was built for one-man operations or garage-builder types, so they’re not out a six-pack of suds because they had to call in a favor. It’s also great for stowing your motorcycle in tight spaces (one-car garages like mine). For Harley-Davidson owners, you’re going to want to jack the bike up from the kickstand side (primary side). This makes it so you don’t need help. You’ll simply position the scissor lift in your sweet spot to where you can get the dolly underneath without impeding the kickstand location. It took a minute to get it just right, but once we did, it all worked pretty well.

Galfer's been making quality braking components since 1946! That's over 75 years of experience making things stop better, faster, and safer. Maybe it's type of materials they use, or the double-disc grinding technology, or their Sintered brake pads. Probably all of the above.
We've had great luck in improving stopping power with previous builds, so why not treat the new Harley-Davidson Low Rider ST to a new set of rotors and pads from our friends at Galfer USA!

Charlie was the Chief of Design at Warr's and essentially the dealership's in-house custom bike builder. After recently going out on his own to focus his attention on building rad custom bikes, Harley-Davidson tapped Charlie Stockwell as one of six custom bike builders to give the old Stockwell spin on the new Nightster.
Having built and raced several Sportsters over the years, Charlie took the challenge to create something unique with open arms. Sticking to his racing roots, Charlie did a cool littler tracker with the new Harley-Davidson Nightster platform that definitely turned some heads at the 2022 Born-Free Motorcycle Show where it first debuted.
We caught up with Charlie at Born-Free 13 this year and had to pick his brain on the overall build, his thoughts on the new Nightster, and much more. With a new riser setup, we decided to try the new ODI Podium bars (odigrips.com) as they fit the 1-1/8-inch RSD Riser clamp setup and taper to 1-inch to work with most Harley bar end applications. And because they offer grips too, we went with a set of ODI Hart Luck waffle grips for TBW applications as well.
Because of the taller risers, we needed longer clutch cable, brake lines and wiring extensions, and we used a complete all-in-one kit from Cable Kits (cablekits.com/index.php?route=common/home). Cable Kits makes entire kits that include extended clutch cable assemblies, brake lines, and wiring extensions that are model-specific to make installation that much simpler.
We headed over the Huntington Beach Harley-Davidson (hbharley.com) to tackle the swap. The HBHD crew is a great group that can handle any of your service and maintenance needs. And they've done plenty of bar swaps too, so it was a huge help to have them handle the installation.Hot Bikes 2022 Harley-Davidson Road Glide ST First RideHot Bike2022-09-01 | The 2022 Harley-Davidson Road Glide ST brings purposeful style by combining the power of the Milwaukee-Eight 117 V-Twin engine with new dark-and-bronze finishes, all set up for the performance-minded touring guy or gal ready to hit the road on a solo adventure. Enjoy.Becky Axel Goebels Born-Free Panhead BuildHot Bike2022-08-17 | We sat down with Becky "Axel" Goebel to chat about her experience as the a Born-Free 13 Invited Builder, and also the first woman to ever achieve that honor.
"I built this bike because I got invited to be a Born Free Builder for the 2022 event. If I were to complete the build, I would be the first female to ever build a bike for the show. I also saw it as an opportunity to build and finish my dream bike.
My main goal was to finish the bike. Because the 2021 Born Free event was pushed to August, the builders for 2022 didn't have an entire year. This build was my first Harley build that wasn't a Sportster so I had a lot of research and learning to do aside from the actual build. I also wanted to do as much of it myself as possible and make a few parts myself. I also wanted to learn a lot."

See the bikes: Cook’s Corner is a legendary biker bar that stands as a proud symbol of forgotten freedom in a sea of ever-encroaching cookie-cutter houses and the inevitable “progress” of Orange County, California. It’s the perfect spot to host a party the night before Born Free since there are thousands of riders in the area eager for the weekend’s festivities to start.
The morning of the party at Cooks Corner all of the builders in our Final SIX will meet in Lake Elsinore and ride approximately 50 miles to Cooks Corner. The party at Cook’s Corner Bar starts about 3:00. Around 9:00PM we will announce the Champ! We’ll all clap and hoot, the trophy and check will be handed over and we’ll call it a night. Once it starts going down, it happens fast, so make sure to be around the upper bar area by 9:00PM or so. It’s standing room only and the suspense is pretty intense.
All voting will be done on the @BiltwellCycleParts website. But regardless of how many votes a builder receives they must ride their bike to Cooks in the time allotted or they will not be eligible to be the Champ! So, all the bikes will not just be “show” bikes but “Go” bikes as well! It’s now time to select your 2022 Biltwell People’s Champ. Click on the thumbnails below to check out this year’s finalists.
