I spent last weekend in my hometown. I saw people I haven't seen in years, and yet it felt like no time had gone by at all. This song is dedicated to my friends from my hometown.
I added the harmonica, harmony, and small guitar riff tracks. My kids added the "Hey!".

Lyrics:
I never thought I'd be here now
I never thought I'd drink this cup
They said the book would show us how
But the book was not enough
It took just one taste to shut me up
I cast the first stone, then I got knocked in the head
And now I'm choking down all the words I once said
It's such a long way down, it's such a long way down
I wonder when did I become
All the things I once despised
Another lashing of the tongue
Another opening of the eyes
It took just one step to change my mind
(Chorus)
The higher the horse, the greater the fall
If there's poison on your lips, best say nothing, best say nothing at all
Another proud and lucky one who dares to think that it should last
Cause it's a long way but the fall is so fast
I saw the line drawn and now I know
(Chorus)

I've heard this song on the radio several times, and it always catches my attention, so I thought I'd give it a try. Silly me, I didn't put the computer on a stable surface, hence the shaky camera. But I wanted you to see my chording hand, in case someone wanted to learn the chords. (Capo 1- combination of E, C#m, B, and A2... but I don't barre over the top two strings for the C#m or B... not sure what the exact names of the chords would be... C#m7 and Bsus4, maybe?)
Pretty the pictures on your skin
Pretty the person you have been to me
Pretty the scars upon your head
Pretty the lovely words you said to me
How did, how did, how did you get to be so pretty? (2x)
Ponder the possibilities
Longings that drive me to my knees again
Your words drip from your lips like wine
Healing the deepest wounds of mine again
If I, if I, if I could only be so pretty (2x)
And you take me in your arms, as you fall asleep
Im captured by the charms of what I could be
Cause you loved me when nobody else would
You loved me when nobody else would
You loved me when nobody else would
And I know you make me better than I am
Better than I am
You loved me when nobody else would
You loved me when nobody else would
You loved me when nobody else would
And I know you make me better than I am
How did, how did, how did you go and make me pretty? (3x)

Anonymous Rockstars
Go on and knock the wind right out of me
Drop the anchor, tie down all the sails
Who can say its ever really meant to be
I guess the dream belongs to someone else (yeah)
Play it loud and grab someones attention
Play it soft and make the people cry
Be my friend for just 15 more minutes
Another round of love before I die (yeah)
Everybody wants to be a rockstar
Everybody wants to have a name in shiny lights
Everybody wants to be a rockstar
Sing your song, take a bow, say goodnight
Fame is rather fickle company
And fashion is a beast upon your back
Who wants who you are; heres what you ought to be
Once youve gone then theres no coming back (still)
Chorus
Youll have to take a number
And join me at the tail end of the line
Well sing all our songs to each other
Anonymous until the end of time (yeah)

Sorry I haven't been putting up many videos lately... life, you know?
Borderline
Youre such a tortured soul
You like to wear it out
Display a pained expression and expect the rest of us
to guess what its all about
Got a lock on your brain
And a drink in your hands
Console yourself with thinking that no one in the world
Could ever really understand
Youre such a mystery to me, my love, my love
Got your feet in the clouds
And your head on the ground
Conspiracies and accusations are the fuel
that make your little world go round
Got your finger on the pulse
Taking tips from the news
You dont care what happened you just want
to get to cite whatever source you choose
Why cant you take me at my word, my love, my love
Chorus:
Figuring it out, trying to see whats true
Why you have to doubt how much I love you?
(But) Everything I say is nothing that you hear
Throwing all my words into a deaf ear
But I will find a way to get to you, my love
Broken shells on the floor
Better watch where I walk
Sometimes I feel, well, never mind I guess
you didnt really want to hear me talk
Nothing seen, nothing heard
All our sins on my hands
I would make up a confession if I thought
that it would somehow help you understand
You keep tearing me apart my love, my love

(Matt changed the words a bit for the little ears in the crowd. The song was a big hit, as you can tell.)
They say she was beautiful once, the talk of the town
But that's all changed, of course, and so they dont talk much about her now
Her only child has long since grown
Its been years since he's made it home
Sorting through what's left of all the years that she gave
She once remarked it felt like her they were putting down in that grave
All her friends tend to keep away
Guess they ran out of things to say (now that)
Chorus:
He no longer sleeps next to her
He no longer sleeps next to her
Worked her fingers to the bone just to eat some bread
And the oil overflowed for a little while just like the prophet said
Dropped her last penny into the box
The hypocrites just stood and watched (now that)
Chorus
And she was strong when they thought she'd be falling apart
And she's learning how to survive with a hole in her heart
And she's not afraid to make a brand new start
and take her own place in this world
Chorus
(c) 2009 Leesha Harvey
The piano footage is shaky because I put the video camera on my desk, and I didn't realize that the whole desk wobbles when I play. I'm such an intense pianist, I guess.
It's Not Your Fault
I get lonely sometimes
It's not your fault
I'm a [woman] who follows [her] own tracks until [she's] lost
I'll keep on going round and round until I'm found
I get wounded sometimes
It's not your fault
I keep on shooting arrows up until they fall
They stall and turn, a narrow miss until I learn
It's not you, I'll be okay, I'm just a jerk is all
It's alright, it's just my foolishness
It's not your fault
I get helpless sometimes
It's not your fault
I just tend to tug on heartstrings til they break
A thug who wins a kiss and misses finer things
I get angry sometimes
It's not your fault
I let the molehill simmer like Vesuvius
And hole up in Pompeii until all hell breaks loose
It's not you, I'll be okay, I'm just a jerk is all
It's alright, it's just my foolishness
It's not your fault

Here are the lyrics to the "Bailout Verse"
I board my private jet and fly in to D.C.
To beg my bailout check from the finance committee
And you know that it's never enough
But my stocks are going under
and we just can't let that be
Cause how can I afford to live my life of luxury?
(c) 2009 Leesha Harvey
I like to have the audience sing along... it's fun. :-)
I'll be putting up more footage from the show in the next few days!
The Glory and the Fall
Label me the skeptic
Are you so surprised?
All these years of sight unseen
have left me with some aching eyes
My hands are stained and shaky
From wars within and without
When You came to claim my soul
why did You leave behind the doubt?
Will I ever change at all
as I live this life between the glory and the fall
I could keep on asking
or I could bide my time
live with the uncertainty
and take all of these mysteries blind
Forgive my indiscretion
Please don't turn away
As I give voice to my darkest thoughts
and say the things the others will not say
But do You even hear at all
as I live this life between the glory and the fall
Can you hear the crashing sound
of all the arguments falling to the ground
Is the space just too far for me to ever know
just what I am and who You are?
Ever broken, ever small
As I live this life between the glory and the fall
Ever broken, ever small
Trying to live this life between the glory and the fall

Thanks for another great year, YouTube friends.
I recorded and mixed the music in Garageband and edited the video in iMovie. My kids get all the credit for the mess. :-)
Lyrics:
You know that's not where we put dirty clothes
Why do you make a mess everywhere that you go?
I spent several hours, made this room look like new
Now it looks like a hurricane went through
Chorus:
Oh cleaning gets old
The mess has to go
I scrub high and low
But you never would know
Don't know why I try
to clean this pigsty
I wake, I pick up
They break, they mess up
Do they put their things away? No!
Do they hear a word I say? No!
Oh cleaning gets old
The mess has to go
I scrub high and low
but you never would know
My house used to be
Organized and quite clean
Then kids came along
Well, you know what I mean
They're my pride and my joy
Couldn't love them more
But I wish that I could find my floor
Chorus
Someone call the cleaner
Need a shop vac and a carpet steamer
You better call Hazmat
It smells like something died.
Chorus
My album "Penny in the Pocket" is now on iTunes! Search for "Leesha Harvey" and you'll find it.
Sounds best with headphones! :) And I apologize if it's out of synch... it was lined up perfectly before I uploaded it.
What Can I Do
They talk entitlements or safety nets and bottom floors
All I know is what I make doesn't buy half the things that it did before
And no, I'm not asking for much
But the doctor's talking surgery and insurance just won't pay
The banker keeps on calling, wants to take my house away
What can I do now
What can I do now
What can I do now
That it's all gone
They're forming bread lines in this nation of wealth
But you won't spare your pocket change to help feed someone else
And no, you don't owe me a thing
But you're burning up my wallet as you're drilling up the sky
While I'm scraping bottom looks like someone's riding high
Chorus
You can call me crazy
But please don't call me lazy
'til you put my shoes on and you walk about
A sweaty brow and calloused hands
Are no guarantee
That you won't ever do without
Chorus

It's 40 feet from the top to the bottom
Of this hole that I find myself in
You used to visit, used to look down when convenient,
Do you know how long it's been?
But I don't need your condescension
Or your petty sympathy
I just need for you to hold the rope
You once threw down to me
Could you send to me a simple word, a passing glance
Just to know that you think of me
Now and again
I'm just an apparition sitting in the corner
All alone, I've been left here for dead
You catch a glimpse and then I get a little hopeful
But you walk on by instead
I don't need your rapt attention
Or your undivided love
I just need to know that once in a while
I'm the one you're thinking of
Chorus
I know what you're thinking, but don't you think it
Cause I won't ask that, I won't ask that of you
I just want to know if everything my heart is saying is somehow getting through (yeah)
Am I getting through?
Chorus

Coal Train
Coal train rolls by into the sky
It rattles the night
Rain on the street, jazz in the air
Keeping time with the light
Black car passes by, catches her eye
It's gone like a ghost
Of all the eyes she's looked into
She misses his the most
The wheels roll on
One glance and it's gone
He dreamed of a ship, got his wings clipped
Went down to the tracks
He wanders the road
Looking to lose the load on his back
He can go for miles with Miles
and Coltrane's saxophone
The melody soothes like her voice
and he knows he's not alone
Chorus
She wonders how much he's changed
Has he let his hair grow?
And does he recall all the things
She wants him to know?
She marks the days with flowers
But she hides them away
Somehow she doubts it's enough
To convince him to stay
Chorus

This is my attempt to sing in Spanish.
The song is "Pegao A Ti" by Jesús Adrián Romero.
The Spanish-speakers in my community are from all over Central and South America, and I have friends from Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Colombia, and Chile. Their dialect, accent, and vocabulary differs considerably, so I have no idea whose version of Spanish has influenced me the most!
I considered trying to sing in German but quickly gave up that idea! I know too many German speakers here on YouTube.
I used a different tuning than Patty does--when I tried her tuning, my guitar sounded really twangy. So I had to leave out the cool guitar riff she does. I really love her music, and I always feel incredibly inadequate when I try to sing her songs. Hope you like it anyway!
Penny in the Pocket
Ginger goes round on her merry-go-round
She drags her hand in the dirt to try and slow it down
Comes to a stop, she jumps to the side
And curses the kids who were pushing the ride
She plays it safe, she's counted the odds
One too many risks might anger the gods
She tiptoes lightly, out of the way
To secure a safe arrival to her dying day Hey
Chorus:
Penny in the pocket
Run until we fall
They say we don't have enough
But we know we've got it all
No worries for tomorrow
There's enough for today
We're just rag-tag lovers
And we wouldn't have it any other way
Billy aspires to build empires
with quarterly returns to buy what he desires
A sure-fire way to get what he lacks
He builds his wealth on someone else's back
His nest is safe and his house is full
Too bad he didn't take more stock in his soul
He pinched and planned, scrounged and saved
For some well-lined pockets to pad his grave Hey
Chorus
The prince withholds, the pauper gives
The good man dies, the despot lives
They can hide it away, safe in a box
And hope they outlast the rusty locks
Chorus

This song is based on the proverb "Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses." Sometimes there are so many people telling us what to do, it's hard to sort out the good from the bad... and the one we should listen to is often the hardest to hear.
Wounds
Shored-up defenses
Like privacy fences
Welcome the enemy
But keep out the friend
Hits and near misses
Of traitorous kisses
Flatter at first
But they kill in the end
Chorus:
So bring on the wounds that heal
Show me which weapon is real
As I put my arms down
Would you put yours around me?
I'll welcome the wounds, my friend
Critics and mockers and
Occasional stalkers
Rivals and renegade foes in disguise
Fans and well wishers
And good advice-dishers
how will I see through my ever-vain eyes?
(Chorus)
The portcullis is up, the draw bridge is down
The white flags are flying all around
Pacing the look-out, watching for you
My sweet-footed messenger, tempered and true
Time will reveal
if the things that I feel
Align with reality
or just with my fear
Though I feel busted,
these wounds can be trusted
Blowing away all the smoke from the mirrors
(Chorus)

Don't Hold It Against Me
A hint of recognition
A little bit of danger in your eye
This room isn't big enough
We can't avoid it even if we try
The person between you and me
Makes introductions awkwardly
But we both pretend we've never met before
You shake my hand then look away
And I search for some smart words to say
But then again you've heard them all before
Chorus:
Don't hold it against me
I know I said too much and I bled too much in your arms
But that was then, and if you were me,
You'd have done the same, you'd have done the same thing
Don't hold it against me
Loneliness can drive you
Down the roads you never meant to go
I thought I was wiser
But you knew things I guess I didn't know
I wonder how it must have seemed
As I worked my way into your dreams
But I never meant to get the best of you
Drowning, hoping you would save
And taking everything you gave
I never knew what my pain put you through
Bridge:
We're just standing here in silence
When something makes you laugh
And I see the spark that I loved back then
And I'm wanting you all over again, I'm wanting you all over again
Yes I'm wanting you all over again

I played, recorded, and mixed all the tracks myself:
Vocals
Piano (keyboard)
Acoustic guitar
Bass guitar
Percussion-- back of an old guitar, a spare bass drum I found in our basement (don't ask me how it got there!), and a tambourine
I did all the video editing as well...all in our spare bedroom. Needless to say, it took a lot of time, but it was fun! Hope you enjoy it--let me know what you think!
Please check out my original music on my channel page. Thanks!
And if you're wondering about the very end... well, I can never take myself too seriously! :D
I hope you enjoy this Christmas medley on piano. (I'm pretty much making it up as I go along, so if you were wanting sheet music... sorry!) :D
Merry Christmas everyone!
Beautiful Destruction
I listen to the music of the wind chimes on my front porch
It's blowing again
Is it the winds of change
or just another storm about to rip the roof, flood the floors, and blow my house in
The sand is slipping away
I pull off all the shutters and I open all the windows
So the breeze can blow through
It's strong but silent
As it clears out all the cobwebs and all long-held illusions I've assumed to be true
The scales are falling away.... Away...
(Chorus)
Beautiful destruction
You're tearing me apart
Melting the cold logic of my heart
All these years I've known You
And sat with You to dine
Could it be I'm seeing You for the first time?
Windblown, drenched by all the rain, I stand here shocked and quite ashamed
It made so much sense
I chose the obvious
Forgetting You're mysterious and love to work in ways that seem both foolish and weak
I lost sight of Your love.... Your love...
(Chorus)
I lie here restless on my bed
And contemplate letters in red
And wonder if You really meant all the things You said
I took Your words and qualified them
Till I practically denied them
And presumed to speak as one who knew You well...
(Chorus)

Sing someone else's socially conscious song! Gotta get my angst out somehow! :)
Hence, I give you a rather thrown together version of Larry Norman's song "The Great American Novel."
This song was written around 1971 I think. Over 35 years and still there is nothing new under the sun.
I apologize for the crappy webcam sound and stuffed up sinuses. I know I look like a train wreck in this video (I rather felt like one when I recorded it last night), but when music is your therapy and YouTube is your outlet, there is little room for vanity I suppose!
Also, I'm playing from memory so the lyrics and chords aren't 100% accurate. My apologies.
The Song for Thursday
The universe has bottomed out
Look at that blood-red sky
Just poets in a shadowed park
You and I
Your anarchy needs order
Must have something there to fight
You can't see the tree before you
Without a light
We're running through side streets
Chased by our fears
Cause the One that we hate and we love is getting near
Waiting for Sunday to appear
No way that we can hide
(So) drop the mask, all you fakers here
We're on the same side (2x)
Am I asleep and dreaming
Or I'm a going mad?
Seems the thing that I've been looking for
I already had
We keep holding hard
To the thing unseen
It's the only thing we know to be true in this crazy dream
Where we going now?
This is getting strange...
Irresistibly pulled to the Man who changed my name

At the time this video was recorded, I had only had my shiny new red Ovation guitar for a couple weeks, and I had only been playing guitar with any sort of seriousness for a couple of months, so please forgive the blunders.
Runyararo (means "peace" in Shona*):
Hold your hand out, child,
hold your hand out and I'll fill it
I know it's not much, but will it do?
It's a big world and we're two small people in it
If I could change it, I would for you
But all I have is love
Lift your head up, friend,
lift your head and don't you worry
Somehow we'll find a way to make it through
Put your gun down, man, cause we're not here for fighting
We're simply surviving, much like you
And all we have is love
All we have is love
Ooo, Runyararo
Ooo, Runyararo
Let your pride go, sir, let your pride go and help fix this
There will be no claiming, you never knew
Are you watching, world, do you see the people dying?
And are you trying, to do all you can do?
Have you not love?
Have you not love?
Ooo, Runyararo
Ooo, Runyararo
