Mixing an insulation slurry. davesrandomvideos 2013-09-01 | Mixing whats called an "insulation slurry" ,one part concrete (quickcrete), 10 parts vermiculite (or perlite as one viewer pointed out) can be difficult, but if done in this order, it seems to be an easy way. For the application we were using the slurry was for insulation between a fire brick inside liner for 800 deg F and a steel skin of the cabinet. So with such a small amount of heat it makes very little difference what filler you use. This more of the method in how to mix a slurry or an a idea of the consistency of the mix. Note the difference in perlite and vermiculite ores are heated to expand them into horticultural products, but the process for each is different. Crushed perlite ore is rapidly heated to about 1472 to 1562 degrees Fahrenheit. The water trapped in the ore particles pops and expands, similar to popcorn, forming round glass bubbles within the particles. Perlite can expand up to 15 times its original volume. Vermiculite ore is heated to temperatures between 1472 to 2012 degrees Fahrenheit, and it expands eight to 20 times in volume.
