He had an in to The Factory recording studio , so we were allowed to use its huge live room as a rehearsal space- for free! U2 were touring Achtung Baby in Europe and would fly home after every gig. Didn't the feckers decide to use OUR rehearsal space To write and record their their next album. We could still access the control room however. Can you imagine the four of us with our noses pressed against the glass looking out into the live room stuffed with U2’s ‘playing around’ gear? One of the songs they recorded in there was Lemon So here's me recording it all on my own live in my little studio - which probably has as much equipment now in my laptop as they had then in the room. The track came about soon after I had “invented” dropped-D tuning ( I had no idea it was actually a thing) and found it worked to give a soothing riff with the chord progression from my song “Just Like This” The harmonica and mandolin are 1-take improvisations on top of the basic guitar bit. The song mooves in gently with a long fade, ruminates about for a while with no real direction , and quietly beyonders off I added this piece as the last track on the album so the listener would be left chilled and relaxed after listening to the whole album. But nobody listens to whole albums anymore, and certainly not in sequence. Sigh. Such a shame especially considering the care and attention I put into sequencing the tracks on Renaissance which is available now on BandCamp and streaming services( 😊This video is imagined as the fly on the wall documentary about the making of a different video that you don't get to see. I had been listening to A-house while having breakfast and been inspired to write a "list' song - a style sometimes used to great effect by that band's singer, Dave Couse. There's a nod to this inspiration in the song."Me" was regularly gigged around town by #SmashingThings. Later, I recorded it on a cassette 4-track machine as part of the album "Renaissance" around 2000. Big shoutout to the handful of people who bought a copy!
