Thomas Hood - Can I have a word? (feat. Kaylee Rolo) Thomas Hood Music 2024-11-13 | Track 9 off of "Can I have a word?", released November 13th, 2023.Personally speaking, this was a track on the album I had to let go. I don't really like how my vocals sound, or how the mixdown is, and this was by far the hardest track for me to properly finish on the record given the subject matter. The feeling is totally there, but I had to let it go.Kaylee's feature here has more meaning that just filling in the 2nd vocal line. She was the first person I ever told about what happened, and the lyrics in the song are a reference to that moment and conversation. As the months have passed since the event, she has been instrumental in helping me process this and getting me back to how I am. I wouldn't be where I am now without her help. She's sampled throughout the album as well (Sessions, Finding Inner Peace, Can I have a word? (Intro), and P&C), as another way of referencing her influence overall. The cover art for the album was quickly taken by me as I was recording the final vocals for (a now scrapped version) of "Can I have a word?". I had a grand vision of a photo shoot, singles for certain tracks, music videos etc. It's not that kind of album though and I ended up cutting everything, and doing this photo myself. The fortune cookie paper in the cover was made by me and is a personal reference to P&C (HR department at work, Kaylee is part of this). They were all very helpful in helping me deal with this, and we would often get chinese food for lunch & read out the fortunes. I wanted to reference them, so I ended up making my own fortune cookie papers and using them for the album art. I initially wrote this track before the events of "Can I have a word?", but the meaning behind it resonates with me so much that it just fell right into place on this record. In the album, it represents a "turning point" and next step so to speak of how I dealt with what happened to me. When I wrote it, it represented a realization of what I need to do to properly deal with issues in my life, a way to enter a proper headspace again.The footage for this track is me playing Pokemon Colosseum. I was replaying the game during the time I wrote the song and ended up sampling it too, as all the foley/percussion/sounds in here besides the piano is me playing the game. I wanted to reference it in the music in my own way. I recorded the footage when I spent the night over at a friend's place. I wanted to use the footage for something, and this was the song I ended up writing after spending another night there.Even now as the date is approaching (Can I have a word? turns 1 year on November 13th), I've found myself playing Colosseum again. There's a comfort in it, at least for me. Thomas Hood - Wanderer Thomas Hood Music 2024-10-01 | Track 3 off of "Can I have a word?", released November 13th, 2023.I'll slowly be uploading the songs from this album now with more context, thanks for your patience. There will be new music soon, but I want to take care of this first.I recorded the video for this almost 2 years ago now, but uploading it as a standalone track back then didn’t feel right. I wanted to do it when it felt right.Wanderer is a special piece, as it came from a time in my life where I didn’t know what to do or where to go. “Can I have a word?” is an album about dealing with an event that happened to me, and trying to process it and become myself again. When this happened, I had no idea what to do, how to process it, etc., I was just doing what I can. I tried a lot of different things, but ultimately in the end music was always the outlet for me. And while I initially wrote Wanderer before this event, it fully captures that feeling I had during this time of my life and was a track that I kept coming back to during this time, which is why I ended up putting it on the album.I shot the video in my car, and recorded the intro sound effects as well. I always envisioned a long car drive for this tune, as I was often driving out to see friends to talk about what happened to me and clear my head. The vocal samples in this one are from an old acapella that juu gave me years ago, just super chopped up. Production wise I’m sure you’ve noticed that the mix for this track and the album in general are….. very loose and kind of rough. I still put a lot of thought and care into it as I do with all my music, but this time I just let the songs be how they are. This isn’t meant to be a huge, tightly mixed, glossy record. It’s anything but that. I just made what I felt at the time to cope with my situation and didn't want to overproduce it and take away how the songs felt.The audio at the end is a recorded conversation with my friend Fumi, who’s part of P&C (will explain later). I would often (and still do) go to her to have a chat about how I’m feeling and where to go from there. She’s an important friend and I wouldn’t be where I am now without her. I wanted to reference her and P&C in the song and throughout the album. The conversation here actually talks about this song as I was writing it.The next song in the album, One on One, is about having these one on one conversations with her. This is meant to be listened to in one sitting.Leading up to the release, I thought about releasing singles and having a few teasers and all of that, but decided against it and wanted to drop this all at once. Singles/building hype doesn't feel right for this, as this isn't that kind of album. Personally I thought it'd be best to drop all at once, then upload the tracks solo at a later date with more context. I'll share this when I'm ready.This is a very personal record, and one that I didn't plan on making. It's about an experience that happened to me last year, and how I dealt with it and moved forward. I know I've been away for quite a while and I hope this album can explain why, as I personally don't feel ready to say why yet.Some mixdowns/vocal takes on this are raw and left like that on purpose. As a silver lining from the pandemic, I spent almost all of my free time writing music and working on my production (I also had to start freelancing music production for $$, so this is literally all I did through most of 2021). As a result, I think I've written and produced some of my best work yet.My 1st upcoming album this year sounds nothing like this track, but it does indicate what I've been experimenting with for the past 2 years: vocoders. I've been using them in interesting ways with vocals/synths among other things. It's been a lot of fun.My plan is to get at least 2 albums out this year, as well as releasing the new Smurker EP that's already done. I'm holding myself to this, since I've been keeping everything under wraps for a while now.
