Time For A New Table Saw? I Build It Scrap Bin 2022-05-01 | My new table saw will have an advanced blade stopping feature as well, it's known as a "power switch". Seriously though, just spitballing on the table saw build. I may never do it, but never say never!The drill press is a definite happening and I'll be starting that shortly. I may make that into a series of update video to post here on this channel to show the progress as I get more of it done.The jointer idea is one I've had for a while and I'm pretty sure I'll do it. If I do, I'll use the grey plastic I used on the table saw as the table surfaces. It's very flat and low friction, so it would be just about perfect for that. Domino Worth It? My Opinion after Using it for the First Time I Build It Scrap Bin 2022-04-18 | It's worth it if you do a lot of builds that require this type of joinery - aka a business or if you are building all of the furniture and cabinets that would fill an average house. The Results Of MY Glue Test... I Build It Scrap Bin 2022-04-10 | Of course the glue stuff is in response to the video that Wandel made where he tested a bunch of glues, but used the wrong type of construction adhesive. And to the best of my knowledge (because he's used it before) he already knows the difference, so I suspect some shenanigans.Fact is while it isn't quite as strong as regular wood glue, it's certainly strong enough for any kind of woodworking - fine or rough. I use it for several reasons, chief among them is that it works in a cold shop and takes longer to set. You can pull off the most complex glue-ups with plenty of time to position parts and get it clamped. It also doesn't have water so it doesn't swell the wood like regular glue does. As a result tighter joints can be put together with this glue - it actually lubricates the wood. Here's an example of competent but possibly brusque and mildly unlikable, vs incompetent but gives you the warm and fuzzies:I went to my very likable and always pleasant dentist about a tooth that had broken off a few years ago. And after a long back and forth between us, she finally agreed to pull the tooth. Dentist, right? Pulling teeth used to be their bread and butter.She can't that day, though; this needs time to prep and pray, so I'm back a week later.After she gave me nitrous and apparently had a hefty whiff of her own to boost her confidence, she gave me 6 shots in six different places in my mouth with two different little baby needles. It took about 15 minutes for that stuff to kick in and then she got ready to pull. First tug and more of the tooth broke off.That's when she gave up!I'm high on gas with a paralyzed tongue, and a mouthful of gauze and she says she can't do it!She sends me home with a referral to a specialist. Aka, a real dentist.He's ALL business - not even a "how are we doing?". He has ONE needle - a 2" long curved SPIKE - and it has no less that 100cc of top quality, turbo-charged deadening dope in it that goes to work instantly. 5 minutes after he's peeling off his gloves and shooing me toward the reception desk to pay.Which of those do you want taking care of your critical stuff? I think the future is going to be full of incompetent "I did my best" crybaby quitters. I Think Ill Tear Apart my Drillpress next... I have an idea I Build It Scrap Bin 2022-03-27 | More brain-power on the drill press idea and I realized I'd need to make the table adjustable too. Most of the time the head would be raised or lowered by a few inches at most. But if you have something 15" thick to drill into, then it would be good to be able to lower the table instead of standing on a stepstool to do the drilling!So limiting the range to about 10" on the head might be enough and I'd make that motor driven, using the drive mechanism from the reclining chair I took apart a few years ago.For the table it could just be a high / low situation, with the top part being removable to use the low table. Like two boxes stacked on each other but locked together. Yeah, he technically isn't "people", but you get the idea.Speaking of machines... that's out evolutionary step. The future will be a move from this human existence to a more everlasting one, at least for those that can afford it. Humanity will continue... maybe... but will be subservient to this new species that isn't a species. Imagine your consciousness being transferred to a machine that doesn't have the weaknesses of this flesh and blood bag of expiring meat. Heck, the machine wouldn't even have to be mobile with advances in virtual reality - you could tour the world from the comfort of your hard drive. Space exploration? What for, when you can do it virtually without any actual expense or risk. And it would probably be more interesting since your space could be populated with interesting aliens. Have tea on Vulcan and practice hiking your eyebrow and perfecting your Vulcan salute... Go hunting for Ewoks on the moon of Endor... BUT, with a mechanical body to hold a backup copy of your consciousness, you would fare much better in the hostile environment of real space.In fact, you could be the space ship itself and then just send out mobile probes of yourself to do the detailed looking around. A totally disposable "crew" complete with red tunics.And since time doesn't mean much when you are practically immortal, you could go off on a deep space adventure. It won't matter if it takes 10,000 years to get to where you want to go, assuming a regular maintenance schedule and a source of spare parts to keep you running in top form.Your travelling companions could be like minded machines, or entirely made-up ones, since there's no real difference. The ten thousand years travel time could be filled with living 100 regular lives, each from a different historical period in time. People that get lost in the minutia, put way too much emphasis on relatively insignificant factors while ignoring the big picture. And discussing these insignificant details endlessly, to the point where others also start to think they are important.Details can be important, but they must be important details. And you need to be able to recognize the difference between important and unimportant details.Example: Through my less than perfect (but still perfectly valid) testing on heat transfer between two metal plates, I have concluded that the type of thermal compound used is an insignificant detail. In fact (and I knew this before I ran the test) you can use anything that will fill the very small gap that may exist between the plates, as long as it stays there (it shouldn't melt out or evaporate).Another example:the ultimate strength of a specific type of glue isn't an important detail when it's stronger than needed for whatever you are putting together. Something like: "This is my Last Project Video Ever" or "I Failed At Project Videos, Here's Why" and got more views.Growth is important until you reach a point where you don't need to grow anymore. I ran my door and hardware business the same way - maintain a certain size that's comfortable and manageable, and leaves me with the amount of free time I want. Sure I could have took on more work, hired people and ultimately made more money, but then I wouldn't be doing what I set out to do in the beginning.Same thing with my main channel. I could have built (or bought) a giant shop, took on sponsors by the bus load and hired people to help, but that's not what I wanted to do. My hat is off to Fireball Tools for actually doing it and doing it in such a scientific way.Tool wear out and the experienced efficient worker strikes a balance between how how fast he needs to get the job done and how much he can pamper his tools. And that VARIES by situation. Sometimes you JUST NEED TO GET IT DONE! and if it ruins a tool in the process, that's part of the cost. When I was working in commercial construction as a contractor, I had to buy all of the tools I used and regularly wore those tools out GETTING THE JOB DONE! I took a few days off last week and didn't get much done. It used to be that I'd feel guilty if I sat around doing nothing during the work week, but that was the old, ultra-productive version of me. The new me doesn't mind at all. Could be because the new me is a lot older.Plans are a drag. Especially plans for complex machines, especially when the project may flop and then I may not sell enough plans to justify the time it takes to make them. How To Fix Torn Jeans With Construction Glue! PLUS Clickbait Rant! I Build It Scrap Bin 2021-09-05 | The glue holds! I washed the jeans since making the fix and it's still on there. No surprise, since the only effective way to get this glue off of cloth is with scissors... it ain't washing out.The one I used is the grey PL Premium, the extra stonzo one. Who would have guessed...About the homepage:I tracked 5 videos that were publish on Friday at the same time. Three (3) of the channels have more than 1 million subs, while the other two had around 300K. Of the five, there was only one that showed up on my homepage, even though I subscribe to all of them and regularly watch their videos. You can probably guess that the one that showed up on my homepage is the one that has the most views, by a very wide margin (approximately 3 times more views).This winning "gladiator" channel is is still fairly new and is still very popular among it's subscribers. It piled up its audience (nearly 2 million subs) over the last 2-3 years and is consistently making high scoring videos. And his videos have been showing up on the homepage for as long as long as I've been tracking what's happening on the homepage, even though I don't watch all of them.The other 4 channels have this in common: they are older. Three have been on YouTube for more than 10 years. Of course there are a bunch of other factors that I don't have the time to go into here, but this is the gist of it and I expect this trend to continue. Quitting YouTube (for now) - Heres Why I Build It Scrap Bin 2021-07-16 | Most people today use their Homepage to check for new videos. And when a creator releases a new video, it's sent out to a certain number of home pages of the subscribers for that channel.If the subscribers are highly engaged, more of them will watch the video when it's first released and that sends a signal back to YouTube that the video is worth sharing. You see this with newer channels that are putting out good content.It will then send it out to more subscribers homepages and it snowballs from there.However, if you have an older channel where a large number of the subscribers have either lost interest or moved on, less will watch that first serving. Based on that poor performance, YouTube doesn't push the video out as aggressively as one that's more popular.The older channel may have a lot more subscribers, but fewer of those actually watch the new videos as they are released. And new subscribers coming in are not enough to offset that that, relative to the channel size.When you get enough of these poorly performing videos, YouTube thinks your channel doesn't produce popular content and your channel falls into a rut where it's next to impossible to get significantly more views, regardless of the video quality. This continues in a channel death spiral with view numbers dropping year over year.Of course all of this isn't exactly encouraging for the creator, either, and possibly affects the quality of the videos because the reward and incentive isn't there anymore.So I think in order to try to counteract that effect, those of us with older channels can do one of two things. The first is to be more selective over the projects and only do ones that have a better chance of getting enough views. That means making the thumbnail and title as provocative as possible to grab the viewers attention and get them to click. It also means putting out less content overall.The other is to start putting out a greater quantity of content that doesn't involve a lot of effort or time to produce, but appeals to a certain percentage of the audience that's looking more for entertainment than actual knowledge or the typical build video. And hope for the best.To take yourself as a subscriber out of this equation, you can use you subscription tab (page) instead of the homepage. Are Vintage Tools Better Than Todays Tools? I Build It Scrap Bin 2021-06-30 | Fact is, almost everything is better today than it was 50 years ago, but many people think the exact opposite is true. The tools that were made 50 years ago were more expensive in comparison with what's available today when you take into account the reduction in the buying power of our money. Like everything else that fills a need and can be effectively mass produced, the cost has actually gone down. With regard to quality and the notion of "planned obsolescence", you typically get what you pay for and it lasts as long as it was designed to last, given the cost to make it. Most retail products have to hit a manufacturing cost that around 20% of the final selling price to making it profitable for to produce.So when you see a cordless drill kit that retails for $400, the manufacturer typically has that complete, packaged and out the door for around $80 to make it worth selling. Products just don't appear out of thin air - people make them and get paid. And people make the raw materials that make the products and they get paid.
