The biggest question is: Where is the money?
Used only the highest quality video codecs and integer scaling methods to produce the sharpest RGB pixels yet.
Color Graded in Davinci Resolve 11
We needed to show the player gaining money, without showing UI. Custom elements needed to be made that matched the game to show the player gaining or loosing cash when they used these powers.
I was responsible for production, writing, editing, capture, and titles for this pack.
I was responsible for the Titles, capture, editing, and production on this.
With every clothing pack, it's always difficult to try and find a context in which your outfit makes sense. For the golfers it was pretty obvious for them to be in a wooded area, but we don't have golf in our game. Good thing You could "play golf" with dead aliens! I always have fun trying to figure out ways to show off the outfits in a way that makes contextual sense.
This video accompanied the marketing push. I was responsible for the writing, production, capture, editing, and graphics on this. I wanted to give it a very shitty broadcast look similar to what QVC does to sell items, but still look modern. Ultimately this is a spoof on the Franklin Mint ads, where most of the inspiration comes from.
Background: We had put together a contest to get fans to submit their drawings to us, and we picked the best ones to create a free DLC pack in Saints Row IV. This video talks about the journey.
Plugins used: Starglow, Advanced Lightning, cc particle world, glow, motion tile.
The final voice was switched out as the story changed to make this one of Cyrus' shows, but you can hear bits of the original VO in this one.
The final video is here: http://youtu.be/ETdWo-jXCqM
Thanks to John Anderson for creating the logo. You can see how I animated the logo in this video: http://youtu.be/-TDs04Dque0
You can also see how I created the glitch effects in this other video: youtube.com/watch?v=IObHqxrviqY
Saints Row IV has a very sci-fi theme, where the main player is hacking into alien systems. I wanted to push that brand with the use of anamorphic Lens flares with this title floating out in space.
I took it even further by adding our digital hacking theme by having glitches that were taken by creating low quality DV exports, overlaid with a noise mask, some custom displacement maps combined with real tape jitter from a D5 version of the video I trashed, and a h.264 version I datamoshed into the video by putting the frames in out of order sequences, causing echos of previous frames misaligned with P frames. All three of these versions were composited in After Effects with noise masks and edits were timed to the music for the final effect.

I was responsible for the filming, but Did not do the post on this work.
The challenge in making this one was the fact that there was so much visible content to show off in 50 seconds. We had decided early on from looking at our Youtube Analytics that players were only engaged in these trailers for about 55 seconds before shutting it off. We needed to make sure that we could put all of the key features in those first 55 seconds.
I had a lot of fun in this trailer trying to do a vampire stalker scene played out by the neck bite (The only visible feature in this DLC trailer). The rest of the pack contains just stat upgrades.
I wanted to show off the fun things you could do with the horror themed items we had in this pack. It was a lot of fun to shoot.
Those shots still need to be captured by an external recorder. In this instance I used FRAPS, but you could use the second DVI port on your graphics card to output to an external HDMI recorder from AJA or Blackmagic.
This is a tool that we use on our internal debug builds, and is not available for public release. (Sorry)

We wanted to focus on two things: Johnny was back, and Super powers. I was looking at other super hero movie trailers and really wanted to give it that epic feeling.
Drew Holmes was responsible for the Script
Byron Evora was responsible for the sound mix.
This trailer was revised several times. At first it was a serious sci-fi trailer to look like an AAA action movie, but after some deliberation we decided that we should go down the campy route, since it was more akin to Saints Row.
The titles were a pretty big challange because we wanted them to have that Shiny HBO logo likeness akin to the 1984 "Feature Presentation" video they showed before every movie. Titles took almost 20 hours to render a piece, and the script called for a lot of them, as part of the Camp joke we were trying to make.
I had a lot of fun editing this trailer because the music really helped create a rythm for the edits. It seemed to just fall into place. At this point in the SRTT marketing campaign I've figured out how to capture good looking shots quickly. This trailer was started from concept to final in about 3 business days.
Kyle Vande Slunt was responsible for the final audio mix.
In this trailer we wanted to give a superbowl epic feeling to Genki Bowl as this was the DLC pack that really blew the Prof Genki stuff out. The titles were designed to be gaudy and crazy as the Japanese cat is just that.
Marketing wanted us to come up with a teaser for the GenkiBowl Trailer based mostly off footage we made in the Original trailer. This was the result.
I was responsible for the Editing and temp sounds. This was the blueprint used when jumping to 3D for the cutscene.
This video took over 35 takes to get the jump right. The action was always a single take and there was no editing trickery to show the right takedown animation as they are always random. Marketing specifically called out the one takedown animation where the character smiles at the camera while posing on the ground.
Steve Jarros wrote the script for this one.
Kyle Vande Slunt was responsible for the audio mix as well.
Jon Meilike was serving as director over the animated logos. I Animated the logos in After Effects.
The video clips were open to interpretation by me. I felt like it would be really funny to see Professor Genki running around murdering everybody like how Michael Jordan dunks on lesser player in a highlight reel. Seeing this Cat with the huge face certainly has resonated with players.
Steve has always been a very funny writer. He was responsible for the Ostrich video we did for Red Faction Guerrilla, and he did a steller job giving us good funny content to go with. Since this was a tutorial video we were tasked with just explaining the game mechanics in a fun way.
I looked at several Japanese game show videos to get an idea of the feeling and pacing it should be edited with. Its the reason why i used the windowed overlay with the scrolling faces in the background.
During the logo animation, we used every kind of animation that we could as the entire game is a huge mashup of crazy discordant things. Overall I like the end product and it serves its purpose.
I was tasked with showing off the zombies for the first time in Saints Row. At first we showed a very serious (similar to what is in the video now) opening of zombies chasing after a scared man with a mask on, much like the mission this is modeled after. After some internal discussion we thought that it wast "Saints row enough". So we changed up the main character to being a black-man in a bathrobe for two reasons, we havn't featured a black character yet, and it was just funny for a bathrobe to be on anybody running from zombies.
Byron Evora was responsible for the audio mix. He had an idea of shoving in a funny line at the end and I ended up changing the video to freeze frame on the end instead of just smash cutting like we had been doing with the previous videos. I thought the line was really funny, and it just stuck with the rest of the team.
Scott Philips was the female running the UAV Drone.
I had an idea of what it would be like if a player was driving quickly down a street, while a co-op player destroyed cars left and right from another location. The idea then got molded to be on a motorcycle, as it gave us more manuverability, and showed off the cool characters.
At the end, the player obviously does not land the jump so we cut early :)
Scott Phillips was the other co-op performer.
We wanted to see how far we could push the boundaries on this video. We wanted to have a Suicide bomber get loaded up by a soldier, and thrown into harms way.
Scott Phillips was the female character trying to stay ballanced.
We were tasked by marketing to come up with the most extreme carsurfing video possible. When we were finished with inital rounds of capture, we weren't happy with the results. We then tried to surf on top of a jet, and guess what? It works.
Try it out with your friends in co-op.
I shot a small intro sequence with the strong female character because we hadn't had a strong female character yet in these videos. I wanted to the beginning to feel like a high action AAA Hollywood film, and then we cut to gameplay of the actual co-op jet surfing.
We wanted to have the youngest most innocent looking girl possible in Saints Row turn around and kill a bunch of gang members. Kudos to V-Singular for the idea to start out on the breasts on the first shot.
It was difficult to find a route in the city that was this close to a Rim Jobs in game where I could do a 360 in the street, and jump a ramp in such a short time with the EMU, one of the slowest cars in the game.
This is a video in the Cherished Memories series for Saints Row the Third.
It took me a long time to learn how to do this but it is possible to bounce a character into the air with a fully upgraded Sutherland pistol. Marketing thought that this moment was so cool, we designed an entire marketing campaign around it.
We had an interesting time trying to get this shot done, as it was very difficult to make this jump in the game. Originally we had shot this promo using the cyberspace bike, but marketing did not want us to reveal that bike just yet. We ended up re-shooting with this bike which made the jump even harder to execute.
Marketing then decided that the clothing should be Red White and Blue to make him look more like a daredevil so we had to re-shoot the promo a third time. By then we were getting good at making this jump maybe 1 out of 3 times. Because of the several iterations that went into making this video, it ended up coming out near the end of the campaign instead of the beginning, where it was originally scheduled.
Scott Phillips was the female coop player.
Kyle Vande Slunt was responsible for the audio mixing and adding music.
This was a fun video we improvised when trying to come up with good ideas for the Cherished Memories campaign.
