Roughly 10,000 new words entered the English language during the Norman occupation and assimilation, particularly those having to do with the world of the ruling class. The effects of the linguistic class division are most apparent in the culinary realm, where words used by the aristocracy have French origins and words used by the commoners have Germanic origins. This is evident even today in the way we talk about certain animals, particularly those typically eaten by Westerners, with words rooted in Anglo-Saxon / Old English to indicate the living animals and words rooted in Old French to indicate the slaughtered animal as flesh for consumption.

A dilemma a lot of new vegans grapple with is what to do with all the animal-derived products they have from their pre-vegan days — leather shoes, wool sweaters, down-filled pillows, etc. — and a question a lot of people ask is "is it vegan to wear / buy second hand leather, wool, silk, etc. In both cases, the harm has been done, but there are a lot of arguments for and against wearing these items, including:
being vegan means not wearing any animal products at all, so you can't be vegan and do so. even wearing second hand leather is giving tacit approval that it's okay to kill animals for their skin. second hand leather is more environmentally friendly than new synthetic leather. And so on. Enjoy!

Thank you for listening.BEEF IS BULLColleen Patrick-Goudreau, Joyful Vegan2024-04-25 | Whatever the barometer (greenhouse gas emissions, land use, soil depletion, water consumption, or water contamination), meat and dairy have a significantly higher environmental impact than any plant food.
Beef is the worst — whether it's organic, local, sustainable, or "regenerative."
It's all bull. If the world population shifted to a plant-based diet, the benefits would be incalculable, but it’s just not a realistic expectation. If only half the population went meat-free only two days a week, we would cut greenhouse gas emissions, land use, and water use by a considerable amount. From the animals’ standpoint, the ideal amount of meat to consume is zero. From an environmental or health perspective, the answer is always MORE PLANTS. LESS MEAT, DAIRY, AND EGGS.
This is what I mean about overusing the word vegan and narrowing its definition. 🙅♀️
We want EVERYONE to care and to take action — whether they’re vegan or not!
I think framing these as HUMAN issues rather than VEGAN issues leads to potentially more people realizing that it’s worth trying to do the right thing in this world — to act as compassionately as possible — even if you can’t be perfect.
While Buddhism-inspired vegetarianism has been part of the Japanese culture since around the 6th and 7th centuries, “veganism” as a concept is very new. In this first podcast episode on being vegan in Japan 🇯🇵 (FOOD FOR THOUGHT PODCAST), I provide a frame through which to understand the challenges and the threads of eating plant-based in Japan, including *the influence of Buddhism and other factors that resulted in a mostly plant-based culture for most of its history *how the move toward modernizing Japan — as of 1868 — contributed to the increase in meat consumption *the regional aspect of Japanese cuisine *the “foodie” aspect of Japanese cuisine, which can also lead to food rituals and ceremonies, as well as fodder for satire I also provide a number of suggestions for what to look for generally if you are traveling in Japan as a joyful vegan, including *which items typically have animal products *what and how to ask for vegan options *where to find the best options as a vegan Enjoy! 𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐘 𝐅𝐄𝐄𝐋 𝐏𝐀𝐈𝐍, 𝐓𝐎𝐎! 🙄Colleen Patrick-Goudreau, Joyful Vegan2024-03-04 | How many times have I heard “Why don’t you care about plants, Little Miss Vegan?? 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐅𝐞𝐞𝐥 𝐏𝐚𝐢𝐧, 𝐓𝐨𝐨!” Gotcha statements like these are simply a distraction from the real issue at hand: 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒎𝒂𝒍𝒔 𝑫𝑶 𝒔𝒖𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒓 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒇𝒆𝒆𝒍 𝒑𝒂𝒊𝒏. Most of us have no problem pulling lettuce from the ground or cutting the limb off of a tree, but most people are unable or unwilling to cut the limb off of an animal or stab him in the heart. And even if YOU are able to do this, 🫣 it still doesn’t negate the suffering of the animal. All we can do is act on what we know to be true, and 𝐰𝐞 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥 𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐠𝐠𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡. The assertion that plants may or may not be able to suffer doesn’t justify causing pain to animals. Being vegan is simply about doing the best we can to not contribute to violence against animals when we have the power to do so. 𝘼𝙣𝙙 𝙬𝙚 𝙙𝙤 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙖 𝙡𝙤𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙥𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙤 𝙙𝙤 𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩. 👉️ So, don’t get distracted next time someone accuses you of being a hypocrite for caring about cows while you’re eating potatoes (and they’re eating cows). ➡️ 𝐏𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐒𝐄 𝐒𝐀𝐕𝐄 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐇𝐀𝐑𝐄 𝐖𝐈𝐓𝐇 𝐎𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐒! ❤️🌱❤️🌱❤️🌱❤️🌱❤️🌱❤️🌱 Don’t do nothing because you can’t do everything. Take a listen to the Medieval origins of this food, how it saved a city, and why it's associated with Easter.
