Exceptional construction
Top of the line materials and components
These packs can take a literal beating and they last forever. Savotta has videos of them doing all sorts of torture tests on their packs and they take it all with ease.
Adjustable harness system which is rare in military style packs
Very comfortable - the belt hugs the waist perfectly and takes the load off of the shoulders. The harness system is also very comfortable
This pack is designed to carry heavy loadouts and it does that very, very well. The heaviest I that I have packed this is 52lbs and it is surprisingly comfortable.
Stable when wearing the pack even with heavy loadouts; the weight is very well controlled and doesn’t swing around crazily.
Easy to adjust waist belt - pull forward to tighten
Enough pockets for organizing gear
Tons of straps and external loops for attaching gear
Huge sleeping bag compartment
Frame does an amazing job of preventing your loadout from sagging
Exceptionally adaptable thanks to all of the PALS webbing and straps
Ventilation is very good
BadA$$ looking backpack

Self-inflates to 70% - from there you can use the pillow to pump up the pad to the firmness that you desire.

My Use and Experience :
I’ve been testing this product out for a number of months now, summer going into the fall and winter; I’ve used it on warm nights with temps in the mid 60’s and cool nights with temps down to 20f.

Review Pros :
Mattress is Supremely comfortable - sleep in any position and it’s comfort city - you aren’t going to feel anything that’s under you.
Pillow is very comfortable - it’s not thick but that’s how I like my pillows - your opinion may vary on this
Excellent quality
Smart design - use the pillow to inflate the Mattress
Comfortable sheets
Incredible r-value : does an incredible job at blocking the cold from underneath you - I used this on a truck camping trip and was really, really impressed at how warm and comfortable it was. This Mattress has provided the warmest and most comfortable nights sleep in my truck that I have ever had.
Versatile product - can use for camping, in a cabin, in your vehicle and so on
good looking product

Review Cons :
Price : There is no way around this, this sleeping mattress is pricey. That’s not to say that it isn’t worth the cost as you are getting a lot for the money; the Mattress, a pillow, and sheets for both. This is a premium product and the price represents that.

Storage bag is a too small for this setup - requires a very tight roll for everything to fit
Cumbersome and a bit difficult to roll up

Summary :
While expensive I’ve really grown to love this Mattress. Again, it is by far the most comfortable Matts that I have ever been on.

The r-value is incredible for winter time camping and at the same time, isn’t all that warm in the summer.

If you’re looking for a versatile mattress, I would recommend taking a look at this…..if you can afford it.

The Perfect Japanese Lantern - ( SOTO ST-260 )

:: SOTO ST-260 Butane Lantern Review ::

Materials : stainless steel construction, legs, break resistant mesh
Measurements : 5” tall 3.5” wide plus the fuel canister 4.25” wide at the legs

Weight : 9.5oz with storage bag

Cost : $75 off of Amazon

Includes : Lantern, Storage bag, 3 mantels

Output : This information I haven’t been able to get a solid answer on; I’ve seen claims that this is comparable to a 80W light bulb on the highest setting. At the highest setting, I’ve ran this for over 3 hours. At a toned down level it will go a lot longer. I’ve gotten over 6 hours with varying intensities.

Mantels : These lanterns use the ST-2601 Mantel; these come in 3 packs and I was able to locate those on Amazon and ordered some. You likely can use mantels from other companies such as coleman as well if you had to.

Shipping : When purchased from Amazon, it’s going to take some time for the product to arrive as it has to come from Japan. It is not as far as I know available in the USA so it has to be imported.

I purchased mine off of eBay a few years ago and now, they are available on Amazon which makes these even simpler. Talking about purchasing from Amazon, the listing calls this the Shinfuji regulator lantern; Shinfuji is the parent company of SOTO.

Features :
This lantern features a regulator which allows for constant performance even when the fuel is cold - without the regulator the lantern would burn less bright in cold conditions.

The regulator also provides some safety; if the unit falls over while ignited, it won’t flare up which is important.

Review Pros :
Very well made product - has a great feel and weight to it.
Fuel efficient - I’ve ran this
Always ignites
easy to use
Fairly compact design
Puts off a good amount of warm light - brighter than the Coleman NorthStar which is also a great lantern
The company does make larger lanterns if you need more light
Puts off plenty of light for a small seating area and table.
Puts off a lot of heat and in fact, I have seen some Japanese camping videos with people cooking on top of these with a grill stand
Very stable
Produces a very warm and comforting light
can be used in a variety of situations; home, cabin, vehicle, in tents and so on
Incredibly quiet
Replacing the mantels is quick and easy
The Soto mantles last a very long time; I’ve been using this one for 2.5 years

Review Cons :
The storage bag offers virtually no protection - a hard case would make more sense
No way to hang this so light is limited to what it is sitting on

This Power Bank is Made From Carbon Fiber ( NiteCore NB10000 Gen 2 )

Review Pros :
- Extremely lightweight – one of the lightest on the market
- Very small power bank - takes up no space in my pack
- Excellent quality
- No issues with charging : no glitches experienced
- Excellent waterproofing : IPX5 rated water resistant – there are other channels completely submerging these are they keep working
- Looks great, feels great, feels very sturdy even though it is so lightweight
- I like the yellow rings that surround the ports
- It recharges quickly too; from one bar flashing to full charge in around 3.5 hrs with a good wall charger.
- Can dual charge – charge two devices or charge a single device while charging the power bank -
- Good capacity - With my average overnight trip, I can charge my phone and run a led light at camp for hours with energy left over.
Reliable : My experiences with the Gen 1 have been perfect - I’ve used it one every single trip that I’ve been on over the last 2 years; that’s at least one trip per week and I’ve never had a single problem. All of the ports work, I haven’t noticed any battery degradation, no swellings, etc and I expect no issues with this Gen 2 model. Nothing so far with almost a month of use.

Review Cons :
Dual Charing is nice but when charging two devices at the same time, neither is at fast charging speeds because both channels are being used.

: Improvements Made and What I would still like to see :

Made -
The company improved the power indicators; previously it was in the power switch and was difficult to read. The separate indicators on the new version is much better.

They raised the USB C charging port from 18W to 20W.

What it is : This is a fairly inexpensive polyester tarp from the company known as Helikon-Tex.

Price : Retail $65 - prices are raised on Amazon - some are around $100. I’m not sure what is happening there - it says that Helikon-Tex is the seller and it is they who are charging more on the site.

Features :

Taped seams
Storage bag allows for easy packing even when wet - I want to test that out specifically as storing a wet tarp is always a struggle.

Two methods of storage included - zippered sleeve and drawstring bag

Pros :

Excellent size especially for the money - there is plenty of space for two individuals under this tarp in a pinch, a ton of space for one person.

Good quality considering the price and the materials - not great but good. There are some loose threads and the tie off points are very small.

Strong considering the low price - suitable for summer time conditions and potentially low impact fall and winter camping.

No issues when it comes to waterproofness in fact, it has held up well to strong thunderstorm downpours with heavy rainfall.

Talking about wind, this tarp has seen mild to moderate winds with the highest gusts being around 15mph.

Versatile - large enough to be used any way that you like; with a tent, by itself, etc. You can even use it as an awning and it works well in that regards

Pack size is reasonable

Two storage bags are included and the mesh zippered bag is smart. I also like the shape. Both fit the tarp with little effort including guys lines.

Weight is reasonable for the price

Cons :
Not the best in terms of quality
small tie off points
Might not be a Problem : The attachment points do not surround the tarp equally as you have more points on two sides than you do on the other two sides. This could cause issues and limit your setup options in some situations.
For some a con could be the lack of guy lines and stakes; some less expensive just as good tarps will come with those items. In this case, you will have to supply your own.

Note :
I mentioned the materials and made my recommendations on use; with the materials and the build quality, summer time use is fine, fall and winter is going to be fine as well as long as it isn’t too windy and as long as heavy snow isn’t laying on the tarp.

If a stronger tarp is needed, then I would highly recommend looking at tarp made from a stronger nylon.

Summary : After countless months of testing, I can tell you that this is a good budget tarp. I had concerns about the overall quality but it has held up well for realistic and sensible 3 season conditions.

Something to remember, this is not a 4 season tarp meaning that it is not going to be strong enough to handle the worst that winter has to offer.

If you don’t need a winter strength tarp this is a good option to consider. If you are looking for a strong tarp that can handle a lot of wind, heavy snowloading, I would look elsewhere.

For a stool, the seat is rather wide which isn’t common with camp stools. Most are very narrow.
One directional way to sit

Review Pros :
Comfortable - Really comfortable considering that there isn’t a back rest. When sitting in it, it’s like a chair but again, without the back.
Because the seat is large it doesn’t feel restrictive and doesn’t impact your legs or hips.
Lightweight
Small form factor
Easy to set up
Can be used for multiple purposes including backpacking, bike packing, kayaking and so on.
Durable
Can be used as a makeshift table if needed
Fairly stable for a stool - if you lean forward to grab something it stays planted fairly well. This is due to slight flexes in the frame and stretching being done in the seat.
Storage bag is big enough to house the stool and seat with no issues.

Review Cons :
Point 1 - Can’t recline - that’s not really a con just a point to make and for you to consider.
Point 2 - feet will sink into soft soil
My only real con for this stool is the price - $100 for a stool with these materials is borderline insanity.
There are a number of lightweight stools out there with most of them being $60 to $70 less expensive.
Yes, they will be made with less expensive materials, they will feature different diving’s, won’t be quite as comfortable and won’t include a warranty that you can trust as most of these offerings will come from Chinese companies. That’s up to you to weigh and consider.

Tip : If you are a taller or larger individual, I would recommend trying this stool out before purchasing if at all possible.

Versions :
There are a number of versions of this tent including the Timberline 2 that I have here.

Add-on :
There is a vestibule Add-on available for this tent, it costs $65

Pros :
I will be honest, I was concerned about this tent when I first received it; it features a very low Hydrostatic waterproof rating

This is a great example of what I have stated for many years; the hydrostatic Head Rating of a tent means very, very little in terms of the overall performance of tent.

I’ve tested out tents that feature high 3,000 HSH ratings that leak whereas this tent with only 800 has never had any sort of issues even in heavy rain.

So pro number 1 - it has been waterproof with all of my testing but that doesn’t mean it is the best tent for storm conditions and we’ll talk more about that in the cons portion of this review
Quality is good
Setup is fairly simple but is a bit of a chore. More on that too.
Size is good for two people But excels as a one person and their gear. One person is able to sit-up, change clothes, move around some. Two limits that ability.
Condensation control is very good as there is Adequate separation between the fly and the tent inner. Moisture will form on the inside of the fly in the right situation but it’s not going to be much of an issue thanks to the fabric is inner.
While I’m not overly impressed with the fabrics used to make this tent, I do like the strength of the poles.
On the inside of the tent, the hardware is present to put up a hanging line so you can dry items or suspend them above your head.

Cons :
No doubt about it, this tent is heavy.
While the setup process isn’t complicated, it does take time as it involves putting together poles, inserting them in to hubs, then you the fly literally hooks to the body and to the poles.
Materials aren’t the strongest
Especially for the price - High cost - That is my biggest complaint concerning this tent - the price is high for what you are receiving.
While i haven’t had any leaking take place, in some wind blown rain situations it is possible as the front and back of the tent feature little protection and there is no storm flap over the zipper. With that being the case, this isn’t the most storm proof of tents.
Because of the design, this tent doesn’t feature the best airflow and can be warm to hot in the summer months. This is due to the limited mesh and abundance of polyester fabric. Eureka does offer different versions of this tent, some with more mesh.
No vestibule - may or may not be a big deal. Keep this in mind though.

Summary :
Overall I have grown to really like the Timberline tent; it’s a tent system used by many, appreciated by many and performs well. At the same time, it lacks a modern design which means the setup is a bit of a chore, it’s heavy and not the most storm worthy.

Also this tent is expensive for what it is; there are plenty of really good tents out there that cost less than this that feature better materials.

Review Pros :
Excellent quality
Impressively water resistant - I would keep it as dry as possible but my experiences have been excellent in this department.

The silicon cover is also easy to clean - if it gets dirty, you can wipe it off rather easily.
On / off switch works well - touch and it is on. Touch and it is off.

Review Cons :
I had to think long and hard about this and folks, I couldn’t come up with any cons for this product.

It works well, puts out a lot of light, the weight is low, the price is right…

Summary :
When I first got this item in to test out, I didn’t think for a second that I would enjoy using it as much as I do but I love the Haven Ridgelight;

I know that sounds like a sales pitch but it isn’t. Just in case you don’t know, the channel is Agenda Free; I don’t care if you buy this…that means nothing to me as it doesn’t benefit me at all.

My channel shares information and that’s it.

Anyways, this light is incredibly versatile and as I mentioned you can use this in many, many ways. Tent, Hammock, Vehicle, Tarp, etc

Before wrapping this up, I will share with you all how I carry this light with me on my adventures.

I’m a fan of lightweight storage bags so here I’m using a TT mesh storage bag and inside of it I have a small flashlight, headlamp, power bank and the RidgeLight.

The power bank is from NiteCore, it’s a 10,000mAh pack and it is super lightweight.

OneTigris Bulwark Tarp - 12.8ft x 9.5” - Review

What it is : This is a summer strength tarp, fairly lightweight, very inexpensive and is impressively waterproof.

Size : 12.8ft x 9.5ft

Materials : 210T Polyester Taffeta with dual PU coating - 2000mm hydrostatic waterproof rating

Colors : Coyote brown only - or at least that’s what the company says but I have heard reports of some people receiving the tarp in OD Green.

Weight : 2lbs 9oz to the tarp, stakes, guy lines and compression strap. I threw out the storage bag as it was useless. I’ll explain why here in a moment.

Features :
Taped Seams
19 reinforced loops with 3 on the ridge

Price : $48 at the time of filming on Amazon

Pros :

Excellent size especially for the money - there is plenty of space for two individuals under this tarp.

Good quality considering the price and the materials

Strong considering the low price - suitable for summer time conditions and potentially low impact fall and winter camping.

No issues when it comes to waterproofness

Versatile - can be used any way that you like; with a tent, with a hammock, by itself, etc. You can even use it as an awning and it works well in that regards

I like the plastic rings in each of the corners -

Pack size is reasonable

Weight is reasonable for the price

Some tent stakes are included - they are simple but hey, they are included!

Cons :

Nonsensically small storage bag that is virtually impossible to use when in the outdoors. I got so fed up with it that I ended up recycling it.
The guy lines that come with the tarp are some of the worst material ever. They tangle incredibly easy and while the 6 lines are 13ft long each, they are highly irritating and should be replaced with cordage of your choice. 550 cord is a good option, Atwood micro cord is amazing if lower weight is a priority. Dyneema cordage is also excellent. You can keep the tensioners and re-use them.
No inside of the tarp loops - for the price, it’s understandable but it would be a nice feature to have

Note :
I mentioned the materials and made my recommendations on use; with the materials and the build quality, summer time use is fine, fall and winter is going to be fine as well as long as it isn’t too windy and as long as heavy snow isn’t laying on the tarp.

If a stronger tarp is needed, then I would highly recommend looking at tarp made from a stronger nylon.

Summary : After almost a year of testing, I can tell you that this is a good budget tarp. If you don’t need a winter strength tarp and don’t mind a little weight, this is a good option to consider. OneTigris, the storage bag is nonsensically small. Only a factory folded tarp will fit in the bag.

Also, the cordage is TERRIBLE. I would suggest not including any as it would be better than what is included.

Valtcan 1000ml Titanium Kettle

What it is : This is a 1000ml titanium kettle made by the company called Valtcan. To be honest, I know very little about this company and in fact, I’m not even sure who sent this to me; it was in the mail one day - not sure if a viewer sent this to me or the company.

No matter what, just as with all of my content, this review is agenda free; I don’t care if you purchase this, I’m here to share my thoughts and opinions.

Dimensions : 3.5” high x 5.5” wide

Weight : 7.3oz for the kettle / 8.7oz for the kettle and bag

Capacity : 1000ml / 33.8oz / 1 liter

Features :
Removable Silicone handle grip
Angled spout
Internal filter - this is good for when you are making loose tea, boiling noodles, etc
Includes store bag
Vents in the lid
Grab tab on the lid

Price : $85

Pros :

Lightweight especially for the capacity
Good capacity - Large enough that you can cook in it and eat from it as well as boil and heat.
Very good quality
Good handles, the silicon grips do work
Good grab tab on the lid - good resistance so it stands up
Handles have a good amount of resistance so when you stand them up then don’t fall over and heat up

Cons :
Pricey - for a titanium kettle, this is expensive especially when you can find virtually identical products for about half the price. For an example, Boundless Voyage has a version of this kettle that looks to be virtually the same and it’s $60 instead of $85. There are others and they are even less expensive. If you want to go with an aluminum kettle that’s a little heavier, you can get those at a much cheaper price, starting at $14.
Internal filter can either be a benefit or a hindrance depending on what you are doing. For an example, if you are making cowboy coffee, it can make the entire cleanup process more difficult than it needs to be. Not a big con by any means.

Summary :
All in all, I like this kettle, the quality is great, the size is perfect for single person use or group use but the price is higher than comparable products. Again, products that are virtually the same! Speaking of which, I was disappointed to see that this product is a relabel and not a unique product - maybe that is what Valtcan Titanium does - someone else makes the products and slaps different logos on them.

Price : $40 for the non-insulated, $60 for the Insulated

Review Pros :
Good size pad for individuals up to 6ft tall.
Great quality - no issues with leaking.
Very good price - affordable for the size
Overall good size
Easy to inflate - good valve
Comfortable to use - can sleep on it any way that you like including side with nothing touching the ground.
Not very loud when moving around on it.
When packed, it doesn’t take up a lot of room inside of your pack.
Lifetime warranty! That means a lot especially when it comes to a product of this type.
Larger air chambers on the sides to hold the user in the center of the pad

Point : No inflation bag is included - this isn’t really a con considering the price but should be mentioned.

Now onto the real cons….

Review Cons :

Because of the size of the pad, it can and will take time to inflate the pad via your lungs.

Ugly blue color - it’s more of a baby blue would prefer additional color options or at least a darker blue.

Pad is slightly slick due to the materials; you might want to consider an anti-slip solution such as seamgrip.

No repair kit included

There isn’t an XXL pad for taller and wider individuals

R-Value :
Speaking of the R-value, Teton Sports isn’t forthcoming about this information on their website; you can only find these details on the Amazon page which I flat out do not like.

The insulated version of this pad isn’t all that insulated. It is rated only for a 2.7 which is fairly low.

Maybe they don’t state the R-value because 2.7 is so low that one won’t likely even notice it. 2.7 is generally recommended for cool, above freezing conditions.

Summer r-values run between 1 - 3
Fall and early spring 3 - 5
Winter 5+

Summary :

All in all, this is not a bad sleeping pad for the money; it’s a good size, offers excellent cushion, the quality is good and it features a lifetime warranty!

For this price, there aren’t many companies that do.

Over the last year or so, I have been very impressed with Teton Sports; very good quality products for the money.

Review Pros :
Great quality Nalgene bottle.
Large capacity Nalgene.
You have the capability of a bottle with the ease of access of a bladder - in other words, you have the hose and the ability to get water quickly without having to get the bottle out of your pack.
Easy to clean
Easy to refill
Easy to add water treatment drops
You can easily add flavor to your bottle and can as I mentioned already, easily clean it.
Having the ability to drink water without getting out the bottle is a huge plus - this translate to the user consuming more water while out on the trail which is a good thing in most situations.
Cost : $30 isn’t bad for this system; Honestly a higher price wouldn’t surprise me at all. In general, a 48oz Nalgene runs around $13, a hydration hose runs around $15…
This system can be used with filtration devices very easily.
If you need to get water out of your bottle, you can do so easily and quickly which isn’t the case with a bladder.
You can easily change out the hose and bit valve if you like.
Straw can be shortened so that this system can be used with smaller Nalgene bottles.

Review Cons :

No instructions were included with the system; while not difficult to figure out if you have ever used a hydration bladder but if you haven’t done so, you may have to go looking for some instruction on how to put the components together.
Sucking water through a hose kind of sucks - it is what it is. I rather drink from a bottle and get the quantity that I want quickly.
Bite valve isn’t my favorite.

Hilleberg Unna Mesh Inner - 4 Season to 3 Season Conversion Kit

What it is : Some time back, I posted a video about the Mesh Inner Conversion kit for the Hilleberg Nammatj tent;

The kit converted the shelter from a 4 season tent to a 3 season one and I’ll quickly explain what that means.

Hilleberg is renowned for their 4 season tents; within this category of shelter, their tents are frankly the best of the best in terms of strength and storm worthiness.

While their 4 season tents excel in the winter time in cold conditions, those types of shelters are the opposite of what you want as the temperatures rise.

This is why;

Double wall 4 season tents feature a fabric inner like this and this fabric inner provides some true benefits when camping during the winter months.

It blocks wind drafts, blocks snow from entering the tent body, and it holds in heat.

Think of those properties for a moment;

Blocks wind drafts and holds in heat. This is the exact opposite of what you want in the summer when it is warm;

You want as much air flow as possible and you want warmth to be released instead of being trapped.

That’s where is product comes into play -

The last time that you all saw the Unna on my channel was back in the winter when I was using the tent in a winter storm. It performed incredibly well in the storm that started as a freezing rain event, then transitioned to a wind driven snow storm.

The tent performed just as a 4th season tent should but now that summer is here, it is simply too warm to use this tent comfortably.

Until now!

This is the Hilleberg Mesh Inner for the Unna and it replaces the fabric inner so that this shelter can be used in the warmer months.

If you saw the Nammatj Conversion kit video, this isn’t going to be all that different other than we are focusing on the kit with a different tent.

I find this sort of gear interesting and I wanted to share this content with those that do as well.

How important is this kit? That is a great question -
Without it, I would never use this tent in the warmer months….it’s absolutely miserable to do so.

It’s like this, you go camping with this tent or similar, you set it up and let's say that it’s 80F outside. Inside of the tent, it can easily be 20 - 30 degrees warmer and again, that’s because the fabric is hold in in heat and it’s limiting air flow.

Thoughts -

Worth the money - For those who plan to use their strong Hilleberg tent in the warmer months, this mesh inner is a no brainer as the benefits are massive.

A Hilleberg tent with a fabric inner in the summer is basically unusable in warmer conditions whereas with the mesh inner, it becomes a supremely strong tent that can be used in the 3rd season.

OneTigris WorkTop Portable Camping Table

What it is : If you go back in time to early 2020, OneTigris had a foldable table on the market and it was a great product - At some point in time that year, the company discontinued it and since that point and time, I have been bombarded with questions about alternatives.

Size is virtually the same - the new table is about an inch longer and height and depth is virtually the same

Summary :
If you have been waiting for this table to return to the market, today is the day! For all intensive purposes the same table; there are some slight differences with the measurements, the materials but in all reality, you won’t likely notice them.

The previous version of this table was excellent and this one looks to continue with that tradition. Way to go OneTigris for hearing the feedback from the outdoor community and bringing this product back to the market.

Outdoor Vitals Fortius 2P Tent - First Look

What it is : This is a trekking pole tent from the company called Outdoor Vitals. This is new to the market and I have received countless requests to review it.

Thanks to all of the requests, I purchased this tent so that I can give you all an Agenda Free Review.

I’ve heard that there are some videos on this tent already but I’ve been told that they can’t be trusted.

That’s why TOGR exists; I’m going to give it to you all straight. The good, the bad, and I’ll show where a product excels and where it falls behind.

Does this tent look familiar in terms of design?

Thoughts :
Overall this looks to be a very nice tent -
Setup is fairly straight forward - if you have ever setup a trekking pole tent before, you’ll make easy work of it.
Quality looks to be very good but not great - I did find a few loose threads which is slightly disappointing especially when some very inexpensive tents have exceptional fit and finish. This is a pricey tent
Materials - with this being a 15D sil PU Nylon, I am concerned about stretching especially when it's out in the rain. It will stretch, it will sag but the question is, how bad will it be? The materials for this tent are higher end and they should be for the price

Weight : The weight for this tent is very good but something that you have to remember is that trekking poles are required for the setup - if you carry trekking poles with you when you are out backpacking, you’ll appreciate the lower weight but if you don’t carry trekking poles then the weight of this tent isn’t all that impressive.
Looks - This is an awesome looking tent - I love the blue color with the yellow accents.

Summary :
This tent looks to be a fairly close copy of the Zpacks Duplex tent - the duplex is an amazing shelter using some of the most advanced materials in the world, it’s insanely lightweight (around 1lb) and is also insanely expensive…not everyone needs or wants to spend that sort of money on a tent.

That alone makes this a very interesting tent.

I like what I see here but I would say hold off on purchasing this tent for now, at least wait for me to rain test this tent. I think it will be waterproof but I’m concerned about the stretching that is going to happen with this material. It will stretch, it will sag but how much? We will find out very soon.
