It’s a collection of 15 pieces of music that span a wide variety of genres all related to crime. There’s no shortage of creepy music out there in the world, so we wanted to do something different. I wanted to explore not just the mysterious aspects, but the human aspects. What happens to the humans affected by these crimes? Instead of sensationalizing each news story as a quickly forgotten soundbite, how can we write music that has something to say about the people left behind? For this project, I sought out sounds that felt raw, broken, and imperfect—sounds that captured a ritualistic energy.The concept behind Lifeline was to explore the full range of human emotions tied to crime. One of those emotions came from crimes involving cults.This ties back to my last post about writing for a singular image. When writing about cults, I pictured a goat, a candle, and a deer skull in the middle of a forest.The music needed to feel like you were stumbling upon a crime in the woods—something you were never meant to witness.For the ritualistic tracks, I wanted sounds that felt unsettling and human—things a single person without any musical experience could do: ringing a chain of Indian bells, humming or chanting a single note, or tapping a rhythm with just a finger.Everything was recorded on a laptop and one microphone. I wrote away from picture, so I relied on mental imagery to shape the music.I simplified the process by working on a laptop with a few instruments: one synth, a broken viola, and a small orchestra for backing.Over several months, I composed two 15-minute suites in long form. Balancing another project, I would return in the afternoons to add to it each day. This routine kept me free from distractions.True crime music often leans heavily into mystery, but for this project, we aimed to distill that down to a few core emotions. Unlike most of my work, this concerto is not born from a film or show. Just a musical diary I prodded day after day when we were all in our homes. After a few weeks, I finished it and filed it away to revisit down the line.A few years later, I met Jay Yoon. Jay is a renowned dentist, and also a remarkable cellist – when he talks, he’s quiet and respectful. But when he steps behind his instrument, he’s a complete force. He rips the cello with no fear or hesitation, the mild mannered man turned into a cellist on fire. He’s played the instrument his entire life, and he jumps at the chance to pick it up whenever he can outside of his day job. I knew he’d be perfect play this piece.We met in Silver Lake Meadow on a stormy spring day to film. I love taking musicians outside of their element and into the world to see what type of performance comes out. When I wrote this concerto, I intended it as an uplifting melodic force that builds to a massive crescendo. And Jay performing it against the gray April backdrop provided the perfect counterpart to the intention of the music.Thank you to Jay (and his lovely wife Julie) for bringing this piece to life.
