It was the first and only all-female, all-Black and all-Hispanic battalion sent overseas during World War II. Colonel Makes Powerful Honor Ride to His Soldiers Graves AARP 2022-11-11 | In 2007, U.S. Army Col. Chris Kolenda commanded a unit of 800 paratroopers in Afghanistan. During their deployment, six of those troopers were killed in action. As the 15th anniversary approached, Kolenda wanted to do something to honor their memory. He decided to bike 1,700 miles from Spalding, Nebraska, to Arlington National Cemetery visiting the graves and loved ones of the fallen soldiers. Barrier-Breaking Marine Had to Fight to Serve AARP 2022-10-14 | When Maj. Gen. Angela Salinas enlisted in the Marines in 1974, she entered an institution that was still gender-segregated. It was not the typical path for women, and she recognized that she was “joining an organization that does not want me.” In the early years of Salinas’ service, women were still not legally allowed to deploy into combat. Her basic training at Parris Island, South Carolina, was women-only and included lessons on applying makeup and carrying a purse. But as women began to pursue leadership positions, Salinas found role models such as Gail Reals, the second female brigadier general and first woman to command a Marine base. By 1989, Salinas became the first woman to command a Marine Corps recruiting station, and by 2006, she took her place in Marine history as the first Hispanic female promoted to brigadier general. In 2013, when she retired from military service after 39 years, Salinas was the highest-ranking female officer in the Marines. Nearly 60 percent of teens have been bullied or harassed online, according to a survey by the Pew Research Center, and these incidents are on the rise. Teenage mental health presents enormous challenges for parents and grandparents who desperately want to help, guide, soothe and love their teens, but don’t know how in this drastically changed environment.In this firsthand account, Suzanne describes the cyberbullying her daughter Molly experienced throughout her senior year of high school. After Molly’s first relationship ended, her ex-boyfriend’s friends targeted and harassed her throughout the year. When Molly graduated, Suzanne thought the impact of the bullying was behind them, but she was faced with the reality that cyberbullying had taken an immense toll on her daughter. Suzanne talks about how she found it difficult to recognize the impact the bullying was having on Molly, since the teen reacted in a “textbook-perfect way.” Molly seemed happy and there were minimal impacts at home, but Suzanne eventually realized that Molly “shows her sadness in a different way.” By sharing her experience, Suzanne hopes to help other parents understand the different ways cyberbullying can happen and encourage them to take online harassment seriously. A Teen’s Suicide Story Now Provides Parents With Hope AARP 2022-09-09 | Our teenagers are facing a mental health crisis and life challenges that are completely unlike those faced by other generations. Nearly 1 in 10 high school students admitted they had tried to take their own life in the previous 12 months, according to a survey published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and 1 in 5 had seriously considered it. Teenage mental health presents enormous challenges for parents and grandparents, who desperately want to help, guide, soothe and love their teenagers, but don’t know how in this drastically changed environment. In this firsthand account, 16-year-old Amy describes the warning signs her parents missed before she tried to die by suicide and provides advice to adults on how they can better understand and help a young person in crisis. Amy’s suicidal warning signs included wearing dirty clothes to school, not brushing her teeth, or doing her homework, and sleeping all the time. She says her parents aren’t to blame because they didn’t know what warning signs to look out for, but she wishes they had validated her pain and gotten her professional help instead of just giving her a hug and saying everything would be fine. Amy overdosed on pills and ended up in the ER. Luckily, she survived. This Marine Changed How Tom Hanks and Other Actors Prepare for War Movies AARP 2022-06-24 | Capt. Dale Dye knew he wanted to pursue something new when he retired after two decades of service in the U.S. Marine Corps, but he was unsure how he could leverage the skills he acquired in the military. A lifelong fan of the movies, he was frustrated by the lack of authentic portrayals of service members on screen. So he set out to change that. Through a fellow Vietnam veteran, he got his first film job on the 1986 remake of Invaders From Mars, working with a group of Marine reservists he convinced the director to hire to portray the soldiers in the film. Once Invaders had wrapped, Dale got wind of a new Oliver Stone project called Platoon, a movie about young infantrymen fighting in the Vietnam War. Determined to honor his fellow veterans, Dale pitched a new idea to Stone: a full-immersion boot camp that would plunge the actors into the gruesome, grueling realities of military service during that conflict. Dale’s boot camp was a success; the picture won multiple Academy Awards, and Dale became the most sought-after technical military adviser in the business, working on projects with Tom Hanks, Matt Damon, Ron Livingston, Steven Seagal and more. Flying an F-14 ‘I Can’t Believe It Was Legal’ AARP 2022-05-27 | In 1994, Carey Lohrenz made history as one of the first women to fly the F-14 Tomcat, the sound-barrier-breaking, deadly fighter jet made famous by the film Top Gun. But in the years leading up to Lohrenz’s graduation from the Navy’s flight school, women were not legally allowed to assume combat roles, including flying combat aircraft. In 1993, prompted by the exemplary service of female soldiers in the Gulf War, then Secretary of Defense Les Aspin lifted the Combat Exclusion Policy for military aviators. Just five women were selected for these highly coveted positions. For Lohrenz, this meant she would get to train on her first choice, the F-14 Tomcat. But roughly one year later, in a devastating turn of events, Lohrenz was grounded. Despite the formal reinstatement of her flight status, Lohrenz ultimately decided to retire from the military and forge a new path, one illuminated by integrity, hard work and optimism. War Dog Reunites With His Best Friend AARP 2022-03-11 | Military working dogs undergo rigorous training. They are taught to detect explosives, to sniff out drugs and to assist soldiers and police officers in some of the most dangerous situations in the world. Consequently, the bond formed between a handler and a dog is unique, a bond that surpasses that of mere pet and owner. When Staff Sgt. Angela Lowe started working with Szultan, a grumpy German shepherd with a bone-crushing bite, she knew the training would require a lot of time and patience. But once things clicked, their relationship solidified, and Lowe knew she could rely on Szultan. The constant wear and tear on her body from training dogs eventually forced Lowe to retire from the Air Force, but over the years, she never stopped thinking about Szultan, and when she got the call that the dog was being retired, she knew she had to find a way to bring him home. Unable to drive down to Joint Base Charleston to retrieve him, Lowe contacted Mission K9 Rescue, a nonprofit dedicated to rehoming military working dogs. As they have done for countless other dogs, Mission K9 cofounders Kristen Mauer and Louisa Kastner stepped in to reunite Szultan and Lowe. Included in the 1949 meet was a team of African American men from the 332nd Fighter Group, also known as the Tuskegee Airmen. Among them was James Harvey. Against all odds, Harvey and his team won the group portion of the meet that year. However, the Air Force did little to acknowledge their victory. After 73 years, AARP’s Wish of a Lifetime program stepped in to grant Col. Harvey’s wish of finally receiving recognition for the meet. My Life After Stepping on a 10-Pound IED AARP 2021-11-01 | While deployed to Afghanistan in 2011, U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Jason Ross stepped on a 10-pound improvised explosive device (IED). Ross survived the blast but lost both of his legs and a portion of his pelvic bone and required more than 240 surgeries.
