Nobody's Business was formed in the summer of 1977 and was a "supergroup" with a pedigree that shone brightly. Featuring Bobby Harrison (Procol Harum, Freedom, Snafu), Tony Stevens (Savoy Brown. Foghat, Rock Follies, Midnight Flyer) Joe Jammer (Olympic Runners) Jerry Frank (session drummer extraordinaire). They went to Nice, France and recorded the album "Nobodys Business" which was released in 1978.

In 1970 Jackie Lomax joined Heavy Jelly following on from his spell in the late 60’s as the first ever signing as a solo artist with Apple Records and being championed by The BEATLES. Heavy Jelly consisted of former AYNSLEY DUNBAR members and the drummer from The ANIMALS. The band recorded in 1970 their debut album. Heavy Jelly initially were a fictitious group that somehow became a real band.

Because of contractual problems with Apple the album has never before been officially released until now. This long lost 1970 album has attained legendary status and has appeared in bootleg form over the years. Following Jackie’s untimely death in autumn 2013 his family has resolved all contractual issues with Apple amicably and they have given their approval for the album to be released on CD at last.

Fellow Apple Records label mates Pete Ham and Tom Evans from BADFINGER appear on the album as well as The Rolling Stones wind section Bobby Keys and Jim Price.

'Bio Blues' bears all the hallmarks of a classic blues-rock composition, while the more rock-orientated is amongst the best tracks on this album. Closing number 'Take Me Down To The Water' welcomes Badfinger's Pete Ham and Tom Evans on guest vocals, or harmony vocals to be more precise. It's a track that seems to go on forever as well, though that is fine with me. The heady turn on, tune in, drop out undertones set a nice contrast to the more obvious blues-laced overtones and a gently pounding rhythm - lending the song its heartbeat. A true gem of 70's blues-rock and thankfully, it can be shared with the world.

"The Tingling Mother's Circus' only album released in 1968 is an psychedelic pop rock album which reminds of the 60's similarities such as Chameleon Church, Cherry People and The Yellow Payges. The Tingling Mother’s Circus Were A New York Group That Included Guitarist Elliott Randall Who Is Best Known For His Great Session Work, And For That Wonderful Guitar Solo On Steely Dan’s “Reelin’ In The Years”.
Group released one single in 1967 Face In My MInd” b/w “Isn’t It Strange (Roulette catalog number 4758) and an album A Circus Of The Mind in 1968.

The album is an ambitious project conceived as a circus performance of two acts. Musically it consists mostly of pop/rock songs some of which were evidently intended to aspire for a wider radio airplay. It owes a lot to psychedelia with horns, fuzzy guitars, country, folk influences. The album didn't sell at the time of its release, but it is now a rare collectors' item. Despite its total commercial flop, it has a very strong and fresh feeling, the songs are catchy, but not kitchy, and there are some very nice and thoughtfully done arrangements. Among the covers on the album are Flowers On the Wall (of The Statler Brothers'), New York Mining Disaster 1941 (that of Bee Gees'), and a very decent version of Yellow Submarine, of The Fab Four's."

"In 1969, John Phillips resigned with the Dunhill label by promising to reform The Mamas & The Papas for the occasion, while the project he intends to carry out, the bastard, is a solo album. For the record, it is with Dunhill's lawyers in the ass that the quartet will end up entering the studio to burn the dispensable People Like Us , in 71.
It is that Phillips is at the time a little bored of the great flower power circus and that he has a collection of lovingly composed titles to defend. Production outright summons James Burtonon the guitar. Elvis himself will freak out on "Mississippi", which he will resume. The collaboration between Phillips and the King will not go much further, Colonel Parker is not too keen on hippies ...

1969 is the twilight of the Baba Gods. Altamont took place, Neil Armstrong walked on the moon and the Viêt-Cong is not giving up, over there in the rice fields. A bit like in Pacific Ocean Blue , this disc takes note of the turning point. John Phillips, in texts where melancholy disputes him with lightness, paints, with well-shot vignettes, the small company he frequented at the time, between Bel Air and Malibu. Special mention to the beautiful Michelle, who goes a little through everyone's hands, on "Down the Beach".
The musical background is decidedly country-rock and folk and, in the genre, it is one of the most successful records of the time. If it is no longer the flamboyance of Mama's, Phillips proves, in a more introspective register, that he is decidedly a great songwriter , an inspired composer who wanders off towards gospel ("Captain (The Mermaid)") or the honky-tonk ("Let It Bleed, Genevieve").
The ten tracks on this album are so many little wonders that require repeated listening and I will say the same for the bonuses delivered on the reissue, not the filling for once."

"The Hunt are in effect Dillinger V2.0. 60% of the dissolved Dillinger quickly reformed into the rather oddly named The Hunt. And they went right about making a superb hard rock album. All of Side 1, and the opener of Side 2 is darn near perfect. Heavy guitars, Hammond organ, flute, passionate singing, and great compositions is what you'll hear on The Hunt. A little Led Zeppelin, a little Rush, and a lot of Dillinger. Concerning the latter, the prog rock tendencies of the past are wiped clean. This is pure unadulterated hard rock of the highest order. Starting with 'Billy', the album begins to break down a bit. This track sounds like a Styx reject from the Crystal Ball sessions. 'Sent Me Away' maintains the Styx motif, though in this case, it's album worthy and a solid heavy AOR number. 'On Revient (tout le temps)' recalls the earlier hard rock greatness. And the album closes with 'Sad Song' which seems like the mandatory lame ballad has finally appeared. But the track is saved by a powerful guitar solo to close the album. So even though The Hunt does crawl to the finish line, it had built such a great lead, the album still posted high in the standings. Excellent music here and not to be missed by fans of the mid 70s hard rock sound."

Biography

Following the death of Paul Kossoff after the recording of the second Back Street Crawler album 2nd Street the remaining members of the band recruited Geoff Whitehorn and dropped the 'Back Street' from their name becoming simply Crawler. Dropped almost immediately by Atlantic they recorded two albums for CBS/Epic Crawler in 1977 and Snake Rattle & Roll in 1978. They achieved minor success with the single 'Stone Cold Sober' which was played regularly by FM radio but were never able to shake off the legacy of Paul Kossoff and they disbanded in the late seventies when John "Rabbit" Bundrick left to join The Who.
Terry Wilson now records and produces with his wife Teresa James. Braunagel also produces and has worked with Taj Mahal among others.

"In the Spring of 1963, The Bar Eights were formed, with Fillmore High School classmates Danny Ogg and Terry Horde on lead guitar and drums, respectively, Timmy Thorpe on bass, and Dale VanDeloo on saxophone and vocals. Essentially, The Bar Eights were a Rip Chords cover band, with a few Lou Christie covers mixed in for variety. Aside from a few coffee bar gigs and a sock hop, The Bar Eights failed to establish themselves even semi-professionally over the next two years. When VanDeloo reportedly attacked Ogg with a mic stand during an argument over who would get the taller riser, The Bar Eights were no more.
Then, one sweltering afternoon in the Summer of 1965 at Clem's Music in downtown Houston, it happened. Chris Lyons was hanging around the store recruiting talent for a new band he was forming. He had already earmarked drummer Eddie Sura and keyboardist Jimmy Spicher, and was looking for a guitarist and bassist. Danny Ogg entered the store with hopes of trying out the new Danelectro that Clem had in. When Chris asked him to join, he agreed, but only under the condition that his friend Timmy Thorpe, who had just gotten laid off from his job at the glass factory and was bored out of his mind, play bass for them. Lyons agreed, taking on Thorpe sight-unseen. After a few rehearsals, it became painfully obvious that Sura was not working out. According to Ogg, "Eddie kept yelling at everybody, particularly Timmy, 'cause he couldn't keep good time." When Ogg ran into former Bar Eight bandmate Terry Horde at Clem's the following week, Ogg offered him the drummer spot in the band. Horde agreed. By that weekend, The Pla-Boys were playing their first gig, at St. Regis College for the Arts. In the audience that night was a man who would change their lives...
Ted Eubanks, an avant garde composer and fixture of Houston's mod scene, caught The Pla-Boys' act. Their set consisted mostly of covers of such garage greats as Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs and ? and the Mysterians. As Eubanks puts it, "They were playing this garage crap! It was horrible. But something about them struck me... I think it was their chemistry". Eubanks immediately approached the band after the show and offered to take them over. They agreed. But Eubanks decided that before anything was to become of them, a few changes would need to be made. First, the music. Eubanks immediately began injecting original numbers into the group's repertoire, and dissuaded them from the typical garage fare they had been playing. Second, the image. The Pla-Boys basically looked like something right out of a Frankie and Annette movie, with matching grey sport suits. But Eubanks got them good and "psychedelicised", dressing them in beads, mod suits, and the like. Finally, the name. From this moment forth,The Pla-Boys would be known as The Lemon Fog.

"The Tea Company released just this one LP in their active period in the late 1960's. The sound of this New York based band is highly psychedelic/trippy and I can say that I dig their sound very much. The material is a mix of short and long tracks. "You Keep Me Hangin' On" is a very nice cover and I enjoy all of the songs on this strong psych rock classic.

I remember when I listened to this album for the first time some years ago I didn't find it to be anything special. But after more listens it has really grown on me. Nowadays I find this LP to be one of the finest examples about the late 1960's American psychedelia. Highly recommended if you're interested in the genre."

"This is a very rare psychedelic rock album on the infamous Mainstream record label. The band was from Cleveland, OH with both male and female vocalists. It’s more rock than psychedelic, even getting slightly garage in certain spots. There are a variety of songs that have unpolished ‘in your face’ sometimes piercing sound, like on ‘Back Road Rider’ with its female scream-oriented front and center coupled with a muscular guitar riff. The mid-paced bluesy hard rocking ‘Livin Way Too Fast’ is a standout with funky bass wah wah riffs and swaggering female vocals. There's also good guitar playing throughout"

"This band is totally anonymous other than having Frank Davis as a member. Davis was an associate of the Texas band Fever Tree, and wrote the two-minute blast "Grand Candy Young Sweet" for their second album. Though much less well known, this LP is better than any of the four by Fever Tree.

The opening track, "What's A Man" is more relevant today than it was then! A conversation between a father and his hawkish son (wasn't it the other way around back then?), it has Iraq all over it: ("You can't imagine what I'm thinking / We've got to fight them while they're small / Or their disease will soon be spreading / And then we'll never kill them all"). I don't know what Ann Coulter was doing in '68, but if that doesn't sound like something straight out of her lunatic rantings, I don't know what does!

There's nothing else here that's quite that powerful here, but the Beatlesque "Sorry You Were Born", and the fuzz-laden "Cadillac George" are terrific on their own terms.

The group gets mystical, with mixed results. "Lonely Seabird" is spellbinding, but the extended, raga-like "That's Good" is simply somnolent. The classical guitar framed "So Much Love", and "You Will Be There" sound like renaissance madrigals. If anything, the group was adept at writing and performing an impressive variety of material.

There's unrealized hit potential here. Both "She Understands", and "Come To Me" are instantly catchy, if only someone had been around to catch them.

The album peters out with the closing track, "Old Man", which lifts the guitar riff from "Peggy Sue", but there's still enough here to make me wish for a follow - up."

"Largely unknown psychedelic mastery here. Like the title suggests, Ellis Island is a true melting pot of musical styles, all under a technicolor umbrella. The ship pulled into the harbor and off stepped these guys, ready to unleash the magic.

The string arrangements augmenting "South Down Road" strike a chord in me immediately. They sound so massive and powerful, exploding out of the speakers. Along with them come the crunch of fuzzy guitars, and a slow beat. Then, the ending is simply relentless. So much power! And that's not all there is.

Shades of subtlety also abound, in songs like "Cairo Hotel" "Oh That She Might" and "Ask Her Again." I love the storytelling aspect of the lyrics to "Cairo Hotel," a true character study. It has a very British feel to it, reminding me of something between The Kinks and Procol Harum. The sheer level of mystery and hypnotism that linger in the latter two tracks is unlike anything I've heard before. Again, the string arrangements add incredibly here. Probably some of the best use of orchestrations ever. The production aspects are also very detailed and layered with eerie echoed vocals and horns on "Oh That She Might" and koto on "Ask Her Again" which adds an exotic oriental ingredient to the mix. For light psych, there's not much out there that's on this level.

The two other pummeling numbers are indeed "Numbers" and "Yes I Know," the latter being my favorite on the LP with lyrics and a vocal performance which resonate with me so much, that it gives me goosebumps. Not too many songs really speak to me in the way that this one does. Its one of the more basic tunes here, built with powerful organ washes, passionate vocals and that wonderful fuzz guitar. Simple and effective, its a song that hits hard, one of the best songs ever written in my opinion. And get a load of that wild organ soloing on "Numbers." That's courtesy of Al Kooper. This song reaches some dizzying crescendos and disorientes the senses. Still no doubt, this is music that is uncompromising and real.

The only song I could do without would be "Another Man's Hair On My Razor" which is an awful attempt at writing a comedic country tune. Its set up like a bunch of folks at a bar, waiting for a band to play and we have Billy Wheeler and his Ramblers taking the stage. It's certainly comical, but the chorus becomes grating and far too repetitive. It's the only blemish on display. And what's on display here is otherwise magnificent. As someone who loves psychedelic music, I can honestly say that this is one of the best and most overlooked albums around."

" The Lemon Dips are a relatively unknown Garage-Rock band from the U.K. They are described as having a psychedelic influenc...

Collection of psychedelic / freakbeat vocal and instrumental tracks issued by the music library label. Three of them, 'Who's Gonna Buy', 'I Am Your Man' and 'Unpack Your Bags' were featured in the film "Haunted House Of Horror". All De Wolf recordings comprised material penned by song writers Peter Renno and Johnny Hawksworth and played by session musicians."

"This is something known as a sound library recording. These were mostly a British phenomenon, where a recording studio would record a hired band to record songs for a collection, which was then pressed on to vinyl in extremely limited quantities, and intended for license to video producers to use as sound track and/or incidental music for TV and movies. The libraries usually had many different styles on hand, and included a few psychedelic and underground rock titles. These are almost all hideously rare nowadays, and are known to most collectors only through the books that they read about their hobby, and the occasional benevolent collector who allows his copy to be bootlegged. The artists that recorded these albums were usually assigned an arbitrary name of the producer's choosing - their real identities purposefully masked, and sometimes with the band's consent as well. So imagine my surprise to find this gem sitting in a seller's list just waiting to be plucked. I never expected to own a copy, and am delighted the price was reasonable. Heaven knows who these guys really were, but i must admit they sure have elements of late 60's era Deep Purple. Style-wise, this is solid, British flavored psych/hard rock with some prog elements mostly via use of Hammond organ. The guitar also uses fuzz/wah to good effect here and there as well. They include some blues material in their repertoire too. Side A is all vocal tracks, while side B is instrumental, with several of the tracks from side A repeated, minus the vocals. I didn't hear a weak track in the bunch, and most are good ~ great. Well worth investigating if the genre is your thing."

"Take elements of psychedelia, jazz, folk, dixieland, science, and science fiction, and combine them into a perfect one-shot slab of vinyl, and you have this album. Definition is one of the most musically accomplished, adventurous, and literate records ever released!

In lesser hands, this amalgamation of such disparate elements could render a product that is patently unlistenable, but group frontman J. Spider Barbour more than lives up to his name. He weaves a complex web guaranteed to ensnare the listener. From the amazing high-speed piano runs of "What Will Become of the Morning?", to the poetic lyricism of "Lake Hope", to the playfulness of "Baby, Let Me Show You Where I Live", there's not a single wasted moment, even when logic and reason dictate that there should be. After all, what other album wouldn't sink under the weight of Barbour's winged insect fixation?

It shouldn't work! It should flop! It should result in nothing but howls of derisive laughter! But, somehow, Barbour is able to show you creatures that you've probably never regarded as anything but "creepy", through his eyes. The small, buzzing subject of the song "Lacewing" becomes a character so sympathetic as to almost bring a tear to one's eye. This is an album of extremes, but doesn't strike the listener as an extreme album.

It's a "hippie" album in the sense that it views the previous generation as ether hopelessly confused ("Father's Getting Old") or irredeemably bitter ("Fitzpatrick Swanson"), but doesn't pander to a messy, two-chord, hippie, stoner stereotype (as heard in the ragtime-based "30 Poplar"). It has a density (witness the lyrical content of "Cynthia Gerome", the story of a femme-fatale who has suddenly lost the magic), but isn't impenetrable in the way that, say, some of Zappa's works are. It's an album that flows along leisurely for half an hour, and then decides to take on the concept of the end of the world ("Dr. Root's Garden", which seems to be the basis for a concept album that never was, but should have been).

There are some in the rock cognoscenti who refuse to believe that anything can approach the Sgt. Pepper - Doors - Surrealistc Pillow trinity. Do yourself a favor and listen to this album before you listen to them! For my money, this beats all three. "This lone album by the US psych rock band Christopher was originally a private pressing of just 100 copies. So it's not hard to understand why it's so rare and valuable nowadays. Musically the album is a mix of psychedelic rock, blues rock and even some heavy psych sound. The album opens with the lengthy title track which is a blues rocker just like the album closer "Day of Sunshine" as well. Both of those songs are good but they're not the highlights here. Rest of the material is psychedelic rock oriented and if you ask me the highlights here include "Death Song", "Fugue" and "Modern Day Oracles" which are all really solid songs. The B-side is slightly better than the A-side I think.

I like this album very much even if it's not one of my ultimate favourites of the late 60's US psych rock. But if you're a fan of the genre this LP is definitely worth checking out. Especially if you enjoy some blues rock mixed with psychedelia. Recommended."

"Really fine set from Embryo, recorded in a town near Munich sometime in February, 1976. Very much a product of their jazz rock phase, Live will appeal to fans of We Keep On, Surfin', Bad Heads and Bad Cats, Apo-Calypso, and their contributions to the Umsonst and Draussen festivals. It's a bit more laid back than their intense Krautrock workouts of the early 70s, while pointing toward the earnest world fusion music that was to follow (Bambule in particular). Roman Bunka once again lights it up with his Eastern tinged psychedelic guitar, whereas Charlie Mariano burns on the saxophone and nagasuram, and Dieter Miekautsch gives us a splendid performance on the Fender Rhodes. Uve Mullrich and Christian Burchard lay down the energetic backbone. Maria Archer provides her usual sultry blues based female vocals on selected tracks, while Bunka brings his unique voice to the fore on occasion. Only 3 tracks will be recognized from their studio albums: Roadsong and After the Rain from Bad Heads (in truncated form), along with an extended version of You Can Turn Me On from Surfin'. The CD adds the 16 minute Just Arrived, from a concert a few weeks later. As you might imagine, given the length, Embryo stretch out a bit more here. A fine album, that improves with age."

Now this is a nice little psychedelic rock album right here. And I really mean little because the album is only 25 minutes long. And that's pretty much the only problem with this record because the songs are all pretty good but some of them would deserve to be longer.

The album has some garage rock sound too. There's also surprisingly awesome guitar playing even if the music isn't that complex and the songs are so very short. Some of the solos are terrific in this album. My favourite song might be "Love Machine" if I need to pick just one. But actually here are lots of highlights and none of the songs is bad or a filler.

A really obscure psych album by The Zoo which is nowadays pretty much forgotten. That's sad because this is a good album and worth trying. I almost gave four stars but I think this record is too short and that's gonna take some points away.

"This is a live concert at Carnegie Hall in New York City recorded in February 1972. The long extended Byrd's tune "Eight Miles High" on side 2 along with their studio album hit "One Fine Morning" are a reason to keep this double vinyl 1972 release. Some of the other long jams are good, as every member gets to jam out live, there's some Jethro Tull like soloing from the flute player and some rocking guitar solos. The band had various vocalists, although Bob McBride, who also plays percussion does most of the vocals and has a very good voice, but there are lots of band members, with horns, flute viola added to the usual rock band instruments. Lighthouse incorporate jazz into their rock songs and the largeness of their band is a good fit for this. There's no "Pretty Lady" live, maybe the best song Lighthouse ever wrote along with "One Fine Morning" and "Sunny Days", because they had not written it yet, that song showed up on the 1974 Can You Feel It album, which I have on vinyl.

Drummer Skip Prokop formed Lighthouse in 1968. The Canadian band released two singles on RCA in 1970 and played at the Newport and Monterey Jazz Festivals and the Isle of Wight Festival, though they had turned down Woodstock."

"About 2 weeks after BRAINSTORM released their second album "Second Smile" they played this open-air concert at Bremen's College of Technology. Radio Bremen recorded it for their Jazz Live series. It was a rainy day on that 23rd of June 1973, but neither the band or the audience let that affect their enthusiasm. Six of the nine tracks are from that second album but they start off with two from their debut and they end the proceedings with one last song from that particular record. Love the cover art by the way.
Anything i've heard that was recorded by Radio Bremen sounds fantastic, and this is not the exception. So yes the first two tracks are from the debut "Smile A While" and sound different from what will follow. These two songs called "Zwick Zwick" and "Das Schwein Trugt" sound like SOFT MACHINE somewhat with the sax and flute taking turns leading the way in these almost improv-like sounding jams. They can seem a little samey but I like them, just not as much as the tracks that follow. "Your The One" is a Joe Cocker cover and they use vocals here. No they aren't the best but they are passable.They do the song justice with better instrumental workouts including a bass solo before 4 minutes. "My Way" kicks in just before a minute then settles back with vocals that aren't so good but I love when it kicks back in after 2 minutes to a Canterbury style with some excellent vocal melodies. Some rare prominant guitar from ex-JUD'S GALLERY's Enno Dernov who mostly plays bass here.

"There Was A Time" is almost 14 1/2 minutes long. This sounds pretty cool a minute in then it turns a little experimental with avant sounding sax and sound. It's not until after 3 minutes that they settle in and the audience claps at the avant playing they have just heard. Yes this sounds excellent when they settle into this Jazzy groove with the sax playing over top. Vocals before 5 minutes. Prominant organ will follow after 6 minutes. Cool tune. "Affenzahn" opens with one of the band members talking to the audience in German then it kicks into gear. I like the guitar early on then the flute leads the way. The organ takes over followed by flute once again with the guitar helping out. "Himwind" is the longest song at over 21 minutes. Great sound 5 minutes in when the flute settles to the background. Sax and flute then start to lead the way with that jazzy drumming also standing out. It settles down then gets a little avant after 10 minutes. Yes SOFT MACHINE comes to mind with the sax dominating the sound. A drum solo follows. "Marilyn Monroe" is a vocal track of almost 10 minutes before this recording ends with the short "Snakeskin Tango" from the debut.

Gotta love the Garden Of Delights label for digging up these previously unreleased live albums. If your as big a BRAINSTORM fan as I am you need to get this one, a valuable live document from the band at the height of their playing days."

"Aera's second album, Hand und Fuss, is a substantial improvement over their debut (Humanum Est). With the Mahavishnu Orchestra still an influence, Aera diversify a bit to incorporate musical influences from all over the world into the mix. Lucky Schmidt takes up the drummer's stool this time around and Christoph Krieger joins on violin, and both of them enrich the group's sound considerably, but props also have to be given to Muck Groh, the group's furiously talented guitar player. Whilst the previous album didn't really stand out for me, this one is a great piece of late-1970s fusion proving that even in the latter half the decade talented artists were still advancing the genre."

"An overlookied US band, formed in early-70's and led by guitarist/keyboardist/sax player Robert Williams aka Roberts Owen (R.I.P.).The original line-up featured also multi-instrumentalist James Larner, keyboardist Mark Knox, drummer Jim Miller, bassist Paul Klotzbier and Jeff McMullen on lead vocals/guitars.Maelstrom went for a private press LP out in Canada, recorded in 1973 at Fort Walton Beach in Florida and very rare nowadays, originally named ''On the gulf''.

Why this band is so overlooked remains a huge mystery to me, as Maelstrom had one of the most eclectic and intricate sounds back in the days.Every track shows a different amount of influences and musical approaches, always played under a very complicated yet well-structured musicianship, offering a huge and dramatic sound like a cross between ETHOS, CATHEDRAL and YEZDA URFA.There are strong amounts of melodies and acoustic passages in the vein of GENESIS, huge sax-based more improvised sections in the vein of VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR and SOFT MACHINE, smooth electric parts with delicate vocal harmonies as tribute to CARAVAN, complex interplays as GENTLE GIANT first ever presented and YES-like adventurous symphonic orchestrations with a superb atmosphere.Heavy loads of Mellotron and organ, jazzy-flavored sax atmospheres, dramatic orchestrations with good electric parts, instrumental battles and endless changing climates can be detected constantly, leaving the most demanding proghead satisfied.

In 1997 Black Moon Records re-issued the album in CD format under the title ''Maelstrom'' and this work contains a couple of extra tracks recorded live by Maelstrom in 1980 at the ''Three Rivers Festival'' in Indiana with only Owen and Klotzbier from the original line-up along with keyboardist Kent Overholser and Rollin Wood on drums.''Opus one'' has a strong E.L.P. vibe with organs leading the way along with some dramatic synth work in a classic Symphonic Rock track, while the longer ''Genesis to geneva'' is a bit more of a loose instrumental composition again in a Symphonic Rock path but surrounded with some more Avant-Garde/Fusion atmospheres, where synths, organ and electric guitars are on the forefront."

A fantastic discovery for all fans of adventurous Classic Prog.Interesting combination of Symphonic Rock, Cantebury Prog and Jazz-Rock, where so much is going on.Definitely among the finest releases of the time in the USA/Canada and highly recommended.

"Grits were also very close friends with The Muffins and Dave Newhouse himself has stated that Grits were a great source of inspiration to him.But the biggest proof of their close relation is the fact that the second archival Grits album ''Rare birds'' (1997, Cuneinform) was a live recording during the summer of 76' in the backyard of The Muffins' main house.Moreover Brian Rapp, who served as an early engineer and percussionist for The Muffins, guests on percussion in two tracks of this live performance.''Rare birds'' features the most proggy material of any Grits release with 4 out of the 7 compositions being 12 minutes or longer, the title track actually reached the 26-min. mark!This is some pretty nice and solid US Prog of the 70's with emphasis on folky, jazzy and light psychedelic influences, as prooved by the tons of interplays, laid-back jams and muddy rhythmic patterns.The long tracks, while not masterpieces, are excellent to say the least, with dominant use of violin, electric guitar, organ and electric piano and strong Mahavishnu Orchestra/East of Eden cross references, albeit inspired more by the US rural county.Multiple variations and extended instrumental work with dramatic edges, technical displays and several proggy changes.It's a shame this band was never rewarded with a contract for at least one proper album."

"Fashion Pink were actually the ancestor band to Brainstorm,which recordings saw no light until 2000.They were formed in Baden-Baden in 1968 by multi-instrumentalist Roland Schaeffer along with Eddy von Overheidt on keyboards,Jürgen Argast on bass,Helmut Rusch on guitars and Jo Koinzer on drums,all coming from local pop groups.Aaarst and Rusch would soon leave the band,replaced by Harold Wagner and Rainer Bodensohn in 1969.The members' parents had strong connections with the SWF radio and the young musicians recorded at three different dates some tracks for SWF from April 1970 to July 1971.These recordings would lead them to signing a contract,but the band (with a slightly different line-up) had already changed their name to Brainstorm.Fortunately this material was collected and released in 2000 by Long Hair Music.

The album shows the interesting transformation of Fashion Pink from a Psych/Blues Rock band to a Progressive/Jazz rock beast.The short opening tracks see them playing decent Psychedelic Rock with lots of organ and flute by Bodenshon and decent vocals,not far from bands like early CARAVAN and JETHRO TULL.Moving on Fashion Pink develop a more complicated sound with strong Jazz leanings and a tension for improvisation,like the highly experimental ''Number six'',yet they never denied their psychedelic roots,the driving organ and melodic flutes are still alive and well and the guitar remain a trademark of the band.Towards the middle of 1971 they had fully transmitted into a complex Jazz Rock act with Schaeffer grabing the saxes for good and FRANK ZAPPA being a notable inspiration,while now the best comparison would propably be OUT OF FOCUS.Powerful organ grooves,sax attacks,lovely flutes and jazzy guitars compose a good sound-picture of the totally instrumental 10-min. ''Brainstorming''.The following and closer of the album 14- min. ''Thesen-Antithesen'',again an all instrumental number, is even more demanding with great guitar/organ/flute interplays,complex guitar and flute work always in a jazzy mood,psychedelic and nervous organ playing and improvisational saxes.The later sound is actually a very good introduction to the real Brainstorm band,recording a year later.

''...to Brainstorm'' is a very good archival release of the pre-Brainstorm days and the listener can see it as a living document of a company of young guys trying to search for a personal and inventive music approach.Recommended,especially for the two long and most progressive tracks,but the rest of the album will also appeal to fans of Heavy/Blues/Psychedelic Rock."

"The Growing Concern's only studio album includes some tremendous American psychedelia. Even if this is mostly a psych pop/rock album the sunshine pop influences are also very clear in here. Some of the examples about the quality of this great record are that absolutely awesome version of "Mister You're a Better Man Than I" and the following pop psych diamond "What Kind of Life". The other songs are impressive pieces too and I find this late 60's US psychedelia classic to be a very balanced totality. The male/female vocals are damn impressive and I love their sound.

This powerful disc gets five stars from me. It's definitely one of the best records in it's genre."

"The relieving proof that swedish rock-related music is more than Hep Stars and Abba.
Made In Sweden was fronted by guitarist Georg Wadenius, who later went stateside to play with Blood Sweat & Tears and Steely Dan (appears on Alive In America).
This album is recorded in a smoky jazz club in Stockholm. "Gyllene Cirkeln" (Golden Circle...). The other players are Bo Häggström on bass and drummer Tommy Borgudd. All tracks are instrumentals, and titles includes "Kristallen Den Grymma" (Swedish traditional), and well known standards like "Mercy, Mercy", "A Day In The Life" and "Peter Gunn". The feeling is very jazz, but the attitude is very rock. These guys must have been sitting front row when Hendrix played in Stockholm. Wadenius' tone is clean, but the feel is raw...
On the other side, their Swedish roots shine through and make this a unique document of a very interesting band."

"Long thought to have been from Switzerland, this Munich outfit recorded their extremely rare (1000 copies pressed) album in Italy in 1970. The track "Ma-Mari-Huana" was issued as a single, and ranks up there with Les Gothes' single in terms of over-the-top psych mayhem. This boot came in a numbered pressing of 300 copies. Musically, it's heavy prog rock with strong psych influences. Despite the album title, this is not a live recording of a concert performance, though possibly live in studio"
