The playwright Aristophanes is influential in getting Socrates convicted and sentenced to banishment or death. One of Aristophanes plays is called The Frogs, a comedy performed in 405 BCE, where Dionysus, the Greek god of wine and theater (also known as Bacchus in Roman mythology), is a central character. Aristophanes also wrote The Clouds:
Plato does not explicitly state in his dialogues that Aristophanes' play The Clouds directly contributed to Socrates' conviction, but he indirectly addresses the impact of Aristophanes' portrayal. In Plato's Apology, which depicts Socrates' defense speech during his trial in 399 BCE, Socrates references the "old accusers" who have prejudiced the jury against him over time. He mentions a "certain comic poet" (understood to be Aristophanes) who, in The Clouds (performed in 423 BCE), portrayed him as a sophist who speculates about the heavens, denies the gods, and teaches rhetoric for money. Socrates argues that these earlier misrepresentations shaped public opinion against him, creating a bias that his accusers—Meletus, Anytus, and Lycon—exploited during the trial.

South Park's satire of Charlie Kirk is that he is a master debater which would put him firmly in the camp of philosophers like Socrates.

So why is this a deadly game, who is doing this? Look at where people put their attention and the fruit of that attention. Philosophers love wisdom, truth, and they come alive in the arena of dialogue and words (Charlie Kirk).
Sophists hate truth and love deception (guise) and if they cannot control the message they cry out that the message is violence.

There is a religious zealotry around deception and guise and you must conform (the younger you can start the conditioning the better because we are not illogical by nature). The greatest threat is that someone will use words to point out the mask and deception. One well thought out articulate argument and the house of cards falls. But Charlie also did something that even Socrates would have marveled at. Socrates knew he could not reason with the crowd (the theater was the place for the masses).But the philosopher is most powerful when he is in dialogue with one or two people. Charlie Kirk however, was experimenting and even succeeding with dialogue in mass. And that would be a deathblow to the sophist, and the devils who live in the darkness.

Christians and Jews historically having troubled relationships does not mean antisemitism is “deeply rooted” in Christian theology. Tom later admits, “both the church and Christian kings are influenced in their attitude to Jews by centuries of relative…tolerance.” That is no small thing given how the rest of the world treats those who are of different tribes.

"So they are viewed by Christians as aliens who have willfully shut themselves off from the universal which in Greek is Catholic uh community of Christian souls. So that's an obvious cause of hostility."

Christian theology teaches us to “love our neighbor” even the Samaritan (or in this case Jewish) neighbor. We mourn those who reject Christ.
When the Catholic church is mentioned this is where Tom is actually talking about humanism present in the church which is distinct from Christian theology.
Human sin creates antisemitism - Christianity points to the cure

"So they are blamed for the sufferings of Christ on the cross."

Christian theology teaches that we are all guilty and that Christ laid His life down willingly for all who would be saved. Bad people saying wrong things in the name of Christ does not equal Christian theology.

"Because Herod was a Jew and Herod is the man who launches the massacre of the innocents in Bethlehem uh when he's trying to kill Jesus. The innocents over the course of the 12th century are increasingly being cast as Christians."

So Christians don’t like Herod because he is a Jew...It couldn’t possibly be because he killed a bunch of babies. And the Christians, because of their Christian theology, are compelled to stand up for the innocent people the world thinks are expendable.

"And so there's a sense that Jews have a particular animus against children.
And there is a broader feeling that they have been cursed by God,
that they're favored by the devil,
that um they've been driven into exile because they slew the Messiah, that they've been exiled from their homeland,
and that essentially they kind of bear the mark of Cain on their brows.
Yes Christianity stands against the religion of man or Cain, and we look to the men of faith like Abraham, but ultimately Jesus.
So there's a whole swirl of very negative stereotypes that Christians can draw on if they want to…"

No, not actual Christians who know themselves to be the worst of all sinners. Tom is pointing to the antisemitism of the world and blaming it on Christian theology. He is like Nero blaming the Christians for burning Rome. “That antisemitism you are seeing all over the place, blame the Christian for that.” Actual Christian theology stands in direct contrast to worldly religion in whatever form it may take.

“Are relations between Christians and Jews in Norwich at this time unremittingly hostile? Absolutely they're not. Because even though there are kind of currents of popular hostility to Jews, by and large, both the church and Christian kings are influenced in their attitude to Jews by centuries of relative, and I emphasize the word relative tolerance.”

Strange Theology 2025-03-31 | For me and many Christians The Shroud of Turin has gone overlooked, but recent studies on the Shroud have brought new information into the conversation. In this podcast we will pick up the conversation where Joe Rogan and Mel Gibson left off, bringing in some great insight from Dr. John Campbell along the way. We will end this part of the conversation with what I think is the most important topic at the heart of the Shroud conversation. The true claim of Christianity is that we have come into contact with the resurrected Christ. We are not looking for physical artifacts to verify the real presence of God in our lives. The real artifact Jesus left behind is the Body of Christ we know as the Church.

“The Sermon of Athanasius, as Markwardt acknowledges, is even less strong. Although Markwardt gives it a date of 68 AD, he is referring here to an event it describes, not to the sermon. Athanasius flourished at the beginning of the fourth century, and many of his sermons have been preserved, but none of them refer to the miracle of Beirut, which is the subject of this particular sermon. We only know of it because it was quoted by Bishop Peter of Nicomedia at the Second Council of Nicea in 737 AD. By this time there were sufficient numbers of images of Christ to make it a topic of intense debate as to whether they should be encouraged or not. The Council of Trullo in 692 AD had determined that Jesus should always be depicted as a human rather than symbolically, but over-enthusiasm for the venerating of such images and the danger of breaking the second commandment, perhaps coupled to an apparent act of retribution by God by a devastating earthquake in 726 AD, led Pope Leo II to institute a period of iconoclasm, inaugurated by the removal of the image of Christ on the roof or above the door of the Chalke Gate in Constantinople.” (from medievalshroud.com/absence-of-evidence-2)

Satan is not the antagonist of Jesus but of humanity. I build off a conversation where Joe and Duncan are exploring the existence, and possible purpose for the evil. Is it possible that evil can be transformed when we understand there is an ultimate purpose given to us by God. Worship becomes an important theme as we are transformed by what we worship. Joe Rogan will point out at around 13:43 that people are sick because they worship false idols. The solution then becomes a community of “open hearted” people who live vibrant lives because of sacrifice and forgiveness.
