Reviewing How to Fly into Busy Airspace | ICON Flight Training ICON Aircraft 2021-11-10 | For pilots who may be more familiar with flying at uncontrolled airports, flying in Class D, C, or B Airspace can be intimidating. If you are a Sport Pilot and want to broaden your horizons by seeking an additional endorsement in your logbook to fly in these areas, you will find yourself back in the books to review the procedures, which can be a bit more complicated and also may vary based on local operating standards.However, this additional effort is well worth it. Landing With Gear in the Correct Position | ICON Flight Training ICON Aircraft 2021-06-07 | Avoiding gear-up landings on the runway and gear-down landings on the water are imperative to being a safe amphib pilot. It seems simple enough: extend the landing gear when intending to land on a runway or other prepared surface, and retract the gear when landing on the water. The unfortunate truth is that accidents and incidents caused by landing with gear in the incorrect position occur far too frequently in amphibious seaplane operations. In this video, the Safety and Standardization Manager for ICON Flight Training outlines six helpful cues to make sure you land with the gear correctly positioned every time.At first, these steps may seem redundant, but executing them diligently on every flight will drastically reduce the odds of landing with the gear in the incorrect position. Ramping an Airplane | How to Fly the ICON A5 ICON Aircraft 2020-12-01 | Learn more about buying the ICON A5: go.iconaircraft.com/buy-icon-a5The ability to taxi up a boat ramp highlights the versatility of the ICON A5 and is one of the most unique experiences you can have in an amphibious seaplane. Utilizing a boat ramp to launch, load, or retrieve your plane at a local marina or seaplane base can unlock flying adventures that aren’t possible in a conventional airplane or even in a seaplane on traditional floats. While the capability to ramp the A5 provides added versatility, it’s important to do it correctly to make sure you don’t damage the aircraft. First and foremost, make sure that you take wind and water conditions into consideration, as this will affect your ability to control the aircraft as you maneuver into position. Second, lower the landing gear in the water with plenty of time to allow for both full extension and gear down controllability checks on the water before entering the ramping area so that you have time to bail out if directional control cannot be maintained. This video outlines some of the most important factors to consider, but it is not meant to be a comprehensive lesson for how to ramp the ICON A5. Every A5 pilot must go through ICON’s landplane or seaplane transition course to be qualified to fly or operate the A5 on the water. Ramping is just one of the many procedures covered in the transition syllabus. How to Rinse the A5 After Salt Water Operations ICON Aircraft 2020-10-29 | Touching down on the water and skimming gently on the surface is just one of the many aspects that make flying the A5 such a unique (and fun) experience. The carbon fiber fuselage provides incredible durability when splashing down on lakes, bays, and even salt water locations such as inter-coastal waterways and protected ocean spaces. While the A5 is constructed of mostly corrosion-proof composite material, there are many small fittings made up of nickel-plated steel, anodized aluminum, and stainless steel. These fittings are corrosion resistant but not corrosion proof. Salt water operations and continuous, or frequent, use and storage in hot, humid environments can lead to oxidation and damage of metal parts. For that reason, it is important to make sure the aircraft is properly rinsed down after operations in salt water. The ICON A5 Pilot’s Operating Handbook recommends rinsing the aircraft with fresh water as soon as practical after every flight involving contact with salt water. Watch ICON’s Chief Pilot as she walks through the freshwater rinse procedure to help prevent corrosion on the ICON A5. Note that landing the plane in fresh water should not be considered a substitute for a freshwater rinse. While this material is covered thoroughly in the Owner Experience Training provided by ICON at aircraft delivery, our team wants to provide as many resources as possible to ensure your A5 flies as well on its first flight as it does on its one-hundredth. Increased attention paid to rinsing operations will further improve the long-term results of your corrosion prevention efforts.

Lake Isabel in Washington, just outside of the Seattle area, is one of the most unique destinations for seaplane pilots and is seemingly contoured to awaken the soul. The lake is about 40 miles from Renton Airport, situated at the Western ridge of the Cascade Mountains. Tucked between a row of mountains rising several thousand feet above the lake’s surface and situated miles from the nearest road, Lake Isabel is a destination seemingly invented for the seaplane pilot. During a recent demo day in the Seattle area, one of our ICON Flight Instructors, Kaylee, flew out to the lake and experienced it for herself. Because she was unfamiliar with the area and had never flown to Lake Isabel before, her excursion offered us the chance to document how our company pilots approach flying in a new or unfamiliar environment. Beaching an Airplane | How to fly the ICON A5 ICON Aircraft 2020-07-01 | Beaching the ICON A5 highlights the aircraft’s versatility and is one of the most fun experiences you can have in a seaplane. Just imagine landing on the water nearby, idling up to your favorite spot, cutting the engine, and jumping out to enjoy a beautiful morning or afternoon on the beach. The amphibious capabilities of the aircraft unlock adventures that conventional airplanes simply don't allow.Beaching is a lot of fun, but there are also several important factors to consider when beaching the ICON A5 to make sure you do it safely. Similar to beaching a boat or a jet ski, make sure that you take the wind and water conditions into consideration and also make sure that the area is suitable and won’t cause damage to the hull of the airplane. As a reminder, this video is meant as a brief overview of beaching procedures and is not meant as a step by step instruction for how to beach an aircraft. Residents and guests of this breathtaking airpark, located about 45 minutes south of Jackson, WY, had an opportunity to meet members of the ICON Demo Team and to fly the ICON A5 for the first time. Alpine Airpark (46U) has a field elevation of 5,637 ft MSL with density altitudes often in excess of 8,000 ft in the summer months. Operating a piston aircraft at high-density altitudes requires careful preflight planning and evaluation of the environmental conditions. However, Palisades Reservoir, just to the north of Alpine Airpark offered a remarkable setting for this close-knit community to experience adventure flying in the ICON A5 and to land an airplane on the water for the first time. The ICON A5 is a light sport, amphibious aircraft built for adventure and recreation. Most of our videos and imagery feature the blue waters of South Florida and the Bahamas or the coastal terrain of California, so we were excited to introduce the A5 to the beautiful backdrop and mountainous terrain of Wyoming, in addition to some of the experienced pilots in the area. San Carlos Flight Center is just a few minutes south of San Francisco International Airport and was recently voted the Best Flight School in the West by AOPA. Needless to say, we were privileged to work with this team to show people the ICON A5 and demonstrate water landings nearby in San Francisco Bay. What makes the A5 the only production airplane that is certified spin resistant by the FAA? We conducted a safety seminar on the subject at San Carlos Flight Center. The seminar outlined the many safety features designed into the ICON A5, including the A5’s unique wing shape, which helps to prevent spins and results in very benign stall characteristics, both keys to preventing loss of control.Part of this video explains the design features that allow the A5’s wings to maintain lift and allows the pilot at the controls to maneuver the airplane--even while in a stall. After their demonstration flights, attendees gave us feedback on flying the amphibious A5. How did it compare to flying in a traditional land plane? Watch to find out. This is where the ICON A5 Begins | ICON Tijuana ICON Aircraft 2019-02-07 | “No aircraft manufacturer is doing what we are doing in house.”ICON Aircraft has been developing the A5 light sport amphibious airplane for the better part of the past decade. And for the first time, we’re offering an in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at where the A5 begins. ICON has gone through great strides to develop the ability to develop a carbon fiber aircraft in our own facilities. More than two years ago, we made the decision to build our own composite manufacturing facility so that we could control the detailed process of bonding the carbon fiber fuselage of the ICON A5 from beginning to end. The composite manufacturing process begins at our facility in Tijuana, Mexico. This facility is over 300,000 square feet and is responsible for manufacturing more than XX carbon fiber parts for each ICON A5. The A5’s fuselage is entirely carbon fiber, which provides great structural integrity at a considerably lighter weight than comparable materials. We can’t show you exactly how the A5 is made (some of our technology and processes are proprietary), but this video offers great insight into what it takes to produce a carbon fiber-based light sport airplane. ESN-1 is the first A5 built using production tooling, methods, and components. The ICON team poured their hearts and souls into bringing the A5 to life, and ESN-1 is the culmination of years of research, design, engineering, and manufacturing work. The company is now looking toward to FAA approval. The first customer delivery will occur in 2015.
