We kicked things off with a drive down to Peaceful Bay beach, scoped out the local fishing spots and settlement, and took in the sweeping ocean views from the lookouts at Conspicuous Cliffs and Mandalay Beach.From the coast, we headed deep into the ancient forests of Walpole to take on the Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk and wander right through the middle of the colossal hollow Red Tingle trees. We stayed at a peaceful farm stay in Kalgan, which turned out to be the perfect base for exploring everything from the rugged cliffs of The Gap and Natural Bridge to the turquoise waters of Little Beach and Two People's Bay. We even tackled the challenging Granite Skywalk at Castle Rock—a serious 4km climb with a massive 300m elevation—but the panoramic views from the top made every step worth it.Between the adventure and the "life maintenance" days in the city centre, we found so many hidden gems, like the colourful silo murals and the peaceful Mistaken Island. We even made some unexpected friends along the way, feeding a stray rooster some strawberries and gingernuts at a lookout! Albany really surprised us with its variety, from the historic Anzac Memorial to the local farmers' market and delicious scones at the strawberry farm. Surrounded by bushland and overlooking the inlet, it was a fantastic spot to base ourselves while exploring this beautiful part of Western Australia. Hamersley Inlet stretches for around seven kilometres and is surrounded by rugged ranges and coastal scenery, with Hamersley Beach just a short walk from the campground.From camp we headed out to explore Fitzgerald River National Park, one of those places that really shows off just how wild and untouched WA can be. This little beachfront campground was the perfect place to pull up the caravan for four days and enjoy a slower pace. With the beach right on our doorstep, we spent plenty of time fishing, walking along the coastline and just enjoying the peace and quiet. We also took the 4WD down onto the beach for a drive, exploring more of the coastline and finding a few good spots to throw a line in.While staying at Mason Bay, we headed into Hopetoun for a look around and to explore some of the surrounding beaches. Hopetoun is a small coastal town surrounded by some incredible stretches of white sand and clear Southern Ocean water, and it was a great base for stocking up and having a wander before heading back to camp. Having a comfortable base gave us the chance to slow down, enjoy the local lifestyle, and experience more of the area than we normally could while moving from camp to camp. Ravensthorpe is a friendly little country town with everything travellers need, making it a perfect stop while exploring the spectacular south coast of Western Australia. Standing beneath the enormous wave-shaped granite formation and taking in its size and colours was truly impressive and easy to see why it attracts visitors from all over the world.While in the area, we also visited Mulka's Cave, home to one of the Wheatbelt's most significant collections of Aboriginal handprints and rock art. Walking through the cave and learning about the cultural stories and history of the site made for a fascinating experience and added another layer to our visit. Staying in our caravan gave us the perfect opportunity to slow down and experience the charm of country WA, with friendly locals, wide open landscapes, and a relaxed pace of life that makes travelling Australia so rewarding.One of the highlights of our visit was driving the famous Tin Horse Highway, a quirky and creative attraction unlike anything we've seen before. Along the roadside, dozens of life-sized tin horse sculptures, each with their own unique personalities and themes, had us laughing and stopping for photos at every turn. From humorous displays to impressive works of art, the Tin Horse Highway perfectly captures the community spirit and creativity of the region. While exploring the area, we discovered that harvest season was in full swing, with paddocks of grain stretching as far as the eye could see and huge machines working long hours to bring in the crop. It was a great opportunity to experience a side of rural Australia that many travellers never get to see.The highlight of our stay came when we were invited to climb aboard a working harvester and experience harvest time from the operator’s seat. Watching the massive machine cut through the grain and seeing the scale of the operation up close was something we’ll never forget. It gave us a whole new appreciation for the hard work that goes into producing Australia’s food and the dedication of the farming communities that keep the Wheatbelt running. We camped at the Merredin Peak 24 Hour Self Contained RV Site, a convenient and peaceful stop with a fantastic walk pass the dam and up onto Merredin Peak a large rock right on the side of the free campgrounds. During our stay we explored the town and admired the impressive silo artwork, which has become a major attraction and adds plenty of colour and character to the region. We also drove past several historic aviation hangars dating back to the war years, a reminder of Merredin’s important role in Australia's military history.We spent time wandering through the town centre, taking in the local atmosphere and discovering some of the area's history. A visit to the Merredin Visitor Centre was also high on the list, where we picked up our 12-month National Parks Pass, ready for many more adventures ahead. Southern Cross Railway Tavern 24hr Free Camp, Salt Lakes, Natural Arches & Gold Mine Ruins EP- 231 Aussie Nomad Destinations 2026-05-23 | #caravanaustralia #outbackwa #greynomadsaustralia #offgridcaravanningFilmed 12-12-25Caravanning and camping in Western Australia we are two grey nomads retired and making our way around Australia doing this great lap. This week Aussie Nomad Destinations spent a fantastic day camping in our caravan at the 24-hour RV stop beside the Railway Tavern in Southern Cross. It was a great little base to explore the surrounding Goldfields region, with warm weather making it perfect for a refreshing swim at the local pool after a day of adventuring. From Southern Cross we headed out along Bullfinch Road, stopping at the impressive Lake Koorkoordine, a huge inland salt lake stretching across the landscape and shimmering in the sunlight.Further along the road we came across the incredible Halfway Rocks Natural Arch, a fascinating rock formation out in the bush. Continuing on to the small outback town of Bullfinch, we explored the historic Copperhead Mine before finding the entrance to Baladjie Rock along Koorda-Bullfinch Road. Southern Cross turned out to be a wonderful stop filled with hidden gems, wide open landscapes, and classic country-town charm. The rest area was a fantastic setup for travellers, offering both a dump point and potable water, making it an easy and comfortable stop for caravaners crossing through the Goldfields region. Coolgardie itself had everything we needed, including an IGA, post office, pub, servo, and even a great kids park, all while still holding onto its classic outback charm and rich gold rush history.While in the area we explored some incredible local sights, including the views from Lindsay Pit Lookout, the peaceful granite landscapes of Burra Rock, and the fascinating Kunanalling Ruins, which offered a glimpse into the region’s past. We also visited the beautiful Coolgardie Gorge, surrounded by rugged scenery and wide open bushland. Camping Near Australia’s Biggest Gold Mine! Kalgoorlie, Grey Nomad Caravanning Australia, EP-229 Aussie Nomad Destinations 2026-05-09 | #caravanaustralia #greynomadsaustralia #kalgoorlie #superpit Filmed 5-12-2025Aussie Nomad Destinations has just spent four days exploring the historic gold mining city of Kalgoorlie, camping at the convenient Kalgoorlie 72-hour RV rest area while discovering everything this iconic outback town has to offer. One of the highlights was visiting the famous Super Pit lookout, where we watched the enormous mining trucks working deep below in one of Australia’s largest open-cut gold mines. Seeing the scale of the operation in person was absolutely incredible and gave us a real appreciation for the mining history of the region.During our stay we also joined a bus tour through the mine site, learning more about how the gold industry still plays such a huge role in Kalgoorlie today. Back in town, we spent time wandering the streets and admiring the beautiful old buildings that reflect the rich history and character of this outback city. From grand heritage hotels to historic shopfronts, there’s so much history preserved throughout the town, making it a fascinating place to explore on foot.After four great days soaking up the sights, history, and atmosphere of Kalgoorlie, it was finally time to pack up the caravan and continue the journey toward Coolgardie. From fuel stops and where to stay, to managing food, water, and rubbish, preparation really is key out here. We talk through how we planned our days, spaced out fuel stops, and made the most of the rest areas and roadhouses along the way. Crossing the Nullarbor is an unforgettable experience, but having a simple plan in place makes it a whole lot easier and more enjoyable.Along the way we pulled into Cocklebiddy to check out the incredible wedge-tailed eagles such an amazing sight up close. That night we camped on the famous 90 Mile Straight at Woorlba Rest Area, a fantastic stop with plenty of space and even a dump point, perfect for caravans. Waking up out here, surrounded by nothing but open road and big skies, really gives you a sense of just how vast this part of Australia is.The next morning we stopped at Balladonia Roadhouse and treated ourselves to two delicious homemade sausage rolls before continuing on. That night we made it into Norseman, staying at the 72-hour RV rest area where we caught up on washing, restocked groceries, filled up with fuel and water, and used the dump point. We free camped at Peg 13, perched right above the cliffs, and were treated to one of the most stunning sunsets over the ocean — the sky lighting up in deep oranges and soft pinks as the waves rolled in below. It was one of those unforgettable moments that reminds us exactly why we love this lifestyle. From there, we made our way to the border and crossed into Western Australia at Border Village, officially ticking off another milestone on our journey.After crossing the border, we stopped in the tiny settlement of Eucla, where we were lucky enough to find some fresh lettuce and apples — always a win out here. With endless horizons and complete stillness, it was the perfect base to explore this remote and rugged part of Australia. During our stay, we stopped in at the iconic Nullarbor Roadhouse and made our way out to the incredible Head of the Bight boardwalk, where the sweeping ocean views and towering cliffs give you a true sense of the scale of the Great Australian Bight.We also explored some of the hidden gems scattered across the Nullarbor, including the fascinating Murrawijinie Caves, the historic Gilgerabbie Hut, and the remote Wigunda Cave. New Caravan Road Trip Back to SA: Lakes, Caravan Camping, Repairs & Cowell Fish and Chips. EP- 220 Aussie Nomad Destinations 2026-03-07 | #caravanaustralia #greynomadsaustralia #aussienomaddestinations #newcaravanFilmed October 2025Aussie Nomad Destination began the journey back toward South Australia after picking up our new caravan, easing back into life on the road. After getting completely lost in the city, Our first night was spent camping beside Lake Lonsdale, a peaceful spot with wide open views and a beautiful place to settle in for the evening. The next day we continued the drive, stopping at the stunning pink lake near Dimboola, where the soft pink tones of the water made for a memorable roadside stop before crossing into South Australia.From there we made our way to one of our favourite stops in Tailem Bend, spending a couple of relaxing days stocking up on fresh fruit and vegetables and reorganising the caravan. After that, we headed into Adelaide to have the caravan weighed, as it just wasn’t towing quite right. That evening we stayed at the free camp at the sports ground in Lochiel, a quiet and friendly stop that gave us a comfortable place to rest for the night.The following day we stopped in Port Augusta to have the caravan serviced, and while we were there Ed even made us a new clothesline that fits neatly onto the bike rack — a handy addition for life on the road. We then headed down to Whyalla to have the caravan wheels aligned before continuing on. It was a mix of excitement and emotion and exhaustion, closing the door on one home on wheels while stepping straight into the next. Taking delivery of the new caravan felt like the start of a whole new adventure, and seeing it ready to roll made all the effort completely worth it.The following two weeks were spent carefully repacking the caravan and the car, finding a place for everything, and slowly moving back into caravan life. It’s been a bit of a mission organising everything again, finding new spots for our gear, and making sure the van is perfectly set up for life on the road.
