I Tested Every Crave Feature - Heres What Happened ⚡

Tetradio 2026-06-01 | Putting the new Crave through some paces as I try and touch most of the features during this jam.

The Crave not only sound great but be super easy to perform with.
The ability for the sequencer to change root at the press of a note gets high marks with me. It's the Here an example of how the Behringer Crave is basically volca bass on steroids.

Korg NTS-1 was used to provide a ping pong delay and theatre reverb effect - no chorus so you can hear the awesome.

Best Budget Expressive MIDI Controller? QuNexus Galaxy vs Seaboard M

Tetradio 2025-12-15 | The QuNexus has been around for a few years but I found it worth a review and setup guide for those looking for an ultra-lightweight, portable MIDI controller with a range of expressive setup capabilities.

Follow along while I demonstrate the essential usage of the QuNexus Galaxy along with setup guides to use as a single-channel expressive MIDI controller with customized tilt (front to back on each key) with aftertouch or additional pressure on the keyboard.

Tetradio 2025-09-08 | What can I say? It's been a while! Had a busy spring and summer but now things are settling down. Remember Synthember? I do! ⚡ it's what got this channel started!!

As the story goes, I had a great jam with this sweet arp on the back porch, forgot to press record and was then rudely interrupted by a thunderstorm.

I hustled inside and tried a second take from the coffee table. My son Xavier wanted to jam along. His riff was so good, I was just tweaking and throwing in some sides whilst trying to hear everything over the thunder burst outside. It was fun but the chaotic mediocrity of the final mix I recorded is palpable. That means you can taste it your mouth and it's .. alright. 😝 Sorry you didn't get to hear the kid, he's good..

All devices were sent through the Little Bear passive mixer then to the NTS-1 with a chorus and stereo delay. It sounded great at first but somehow the drums got out of hand near the end - I think I mis-tweaked the stereo delay. Next time I'll just stick with a reverb if I have to pass drums through a live effects mix. It's way different working without a headset!

Anyhoo, I should be back soon with a few more reviews and different tutorials I have been working on. Ta for now!

Tetradio 2025-03-27 | My goal for this one was to get a decent bass arp going and try to make it work with different backdrops and leads.

And I am also practicing my solos. Not great but better than most for me so far. 😬 I found sticking with a pentatonic scale and two or three fingers makes it a lot easier.

The A15 guitar lead of the JD-08 is how should I say it... blistering?! Yeah. And aftertouch makes it even better.

But one thing is certain: that NTS-1 never fails to amaze me.

I like to riff out on the keys. I am not very great, but some times I just get the feels and it sounds awesome to me

but I forget to press record.. or I mess up the take later with some nonsense

maybe you know what I mean

So here is how This One went down

a few weeks ago I had a good jam session on the sample 2 where I unlocked using loop mode & dynamic changes to the sample start and end encoders to get that ratchet / echo effect on the snare.. so wish I recorded that

I didn't.. so I reused it here

detuning the volca bass VCOs up a 5th and down a 4th also came from a previous take... brill!

That arp riff near the end was from a previous take - pulled that out of my.. fingers somehow - I recorded that take! but messed up the rest some how

and I finally figured out how to get an LFO on the JD-08 to modulate the sound the way I needed for the sequence - takes 1 to 5

It's all a mash up - take after take, it takes wat it takes to take the final take..

and then more fun with mixdowns and video post processing! Woo!!

I seriously nerd on this shit, sorry. It takes me away from the music, I know, but it's fun as fuck. I love Davinci Resolve and mixing effects overlays - wasted so many hours..

Using OBS to capture from two droidcam'd up iPhones on a local wifi along with audio capture makes it easy to post in Davinci. saves a ton of time vs mixing various multi-cam videos and overlays and shit

then I can directly add a little custom Ozone VST audio processing trained from a busy section of the audio. Not utilizing a pre-equalized instrument mix, the Ozone really helps out the final.

the real help is not having to premix the audio in Bitwig (daw) before importing to Davinci - I can do it all there with an OBS final!

After all that I merge another Plane9.com visual recorded after post audio processing - that's a whole nother deal which is maybe a waste of time, but some of the Plane 9 visuals are ridiculously cool - check it out

A Spooky Little Beat: How I Created this Haunting Groove with the MC-101

Tetradio 2024-10-14 | I've been spending the past few weeks getting to know my Roland MC-101. This newest addition to the lab is an immense amount of fun in a small package!

A spooky little beat was brewed up using the Miyako scale in chord designer, I think with 1,3,5,7 type 2 chord fills.

Aside from the 707 / 727 combo kit, the patches are: Dyno EP, Acdg Bass and Arabesque Lead.

Here are some tips on how to use the ROLI Dashboard software and configure the Seaboard M / Block M with the best settings for playing external synthesizer modules over MIDI.

Learn how to use the factory reset configuration to correctly set the sensitivity parameters for the Seaboard as well as pitch bend and slide CC settings to get most expression out of most any connected MIDI synthesizer.

To clean the finger stuff that can accumulate while playing, keep a damp cloth handy to wipe it down, then follow up with a microfiber cloth. Essential! 🧽

Tetradio 2024-10-03 | This improvised extended soundscape sequence was recorded a few months back. Listening to it again, I remember it was serious fun playing with both A and B tracks on the SQ-1 running different devices.

There are all kinds of ways to switch up the sequence from the SQ1 alone: flipping gates, active steps, key modes, voltage ranges - aside from changing the individual tones played... Plus the variations you can get in sound from both modular and the FM make the three a great combo. I played around with this setup again today and had fun just mixing in the arp mode on the fm periodically.

Korg SQ-1 Part A was running the volca fm while part B was running the modular.
Korg NTS-1 for various effects - sorry for the distortion, but 🎸
and some solo play on the Korg volca bass - I really love that keybed for ambient jamming like this.

MPE stands for MIDI Polyphonic Expression, basically allowing different expression events to happen on multiple notes played at the same time. I added some real life adventure videos which gave nice ambient backing track that seemed to fit with the Berlin style. Also figured I would show a preview of my new studio setup. Notes for syncing with Keystep Pro: volcas like 2 PPQ clock out from the Keystep Pro and need a manual sync out connection via TRS cable, as they do not seem to auto-sync to midi clock.

The JX-08 needs manual config: Menu : Midi : Sync : Midi to sync to MIDI clock.

With this setup, I can press play on volcas or JX-08 and they will start in sync when Play is pressed on the Keystep Pro.

Tetradio 2024-05-25 | Ever since I got a volca bass and was jamming with three mini synths, I was on a path for a dawless symphony of instruments. The word 'dawless' wasn't in my vocabulary a year ago, I was just exploring new ways to create music without a computer. I particularly like wide, lush soundtracks and sound symphonies. The classic 'wall of sound', done right, is what gives me the tingles. ✨

I added an NTS-1 to my setup last October and after that I knew what I wanted: A few more carefully selected mini-synths, a mixer and a good dawless controller. I have a family and a budget though, so no GAS for me. I had to plan it out...

Ebay and the second-hand market is a wonderful thing (so is Christmas wishlist 🤭.) Plenty of people selling pristine gear, some of it never used, for up to 50% off retail prices! The moment was right a month ago and I was able to snag both the JX-08 and the Keystep Pro at great discount.

Spending the last three weeks learning the new instruments and jamming has been a blast - so many ideas percolating, dozens of new patterns and patches saved; this is going to be a lot of fun! 😃

What's going on here:

Roland JX-08 is running two sequences, 8 step custom arp is Patch b.46: Fat Fifth 2 and the main sequence is 32 steps using patch b.37 Light Pluck

The volca modular is using the Square wave PWM patch from youtube.com/watch?v=XBdHcE5ruPw pitched up as a rough pluck and doubled by the Ahr Saw patch on the NTS-1 which is brought in via the LP4 filter.

the volca bass is running a long drone in D to add an extra layer, half tempo at 80 bpm for no good reason ( I thought of turning off slide for an extra edge, but decided to keep it droning this jam ) see here for how to make a drone on the KVB: youtube.com/watch?v=71dn6RIvuOc

The keystep is at 160 bpm, with 1/8 tempo sequence tracks so I can keep the drums at full tempo and use the looper at 5:40.

The keystep is also handling the volca fm 2 on Track 2 playing an ambient accent using the Qusi patch and Track 4 with 2 patterns playing the edgy modular/NTS-1 sequences. I tried to work the 2nd pattern so it blended back with the main riff coming from the JX, and I think it worked out okay. ⚡

At 6:00 I used a custom CC on the keystep to adjust the active Modulator on the NTS-1. Only the fm 2, bass, modular were running through the NTS-1 and this created a cool way to alter part of the performance or even shift it into another genre using the Gator, LFO and Wah-wah custom modulators.

NTS-1: Mod - chorus (mostly), Delay - stereo, Reverb - Submarine (light, Dry 70)

I only scratched the surface with this particular setup and jam, there are so many potential variations, easily it can morph into a hard techno or ambient DnB - a ton of fun!

Tetradio 2024-05-15 | Here's how I like to play with drones on the Korg volca bass. NTS-1 effects by @hammondeggsmusic for the best dark shimmer, Haze HD - link below in the tutorial script.

Decided to make this no talking, so here's the script for those who like to translate:

Start with a neutral Korg volca bass Setup:

VCF: Peak 0, Cutoff 5
LFO: Rate 0, Int 0
VCO: All pitches at 5 (off)
Volume: 11

EG Attack, Decay, Amp Int, Amp EG and Sustain settings have no effect on drone sound.

Drone 1:

Clear a track, select 3 Oscillator Unison mode (Func + M3)

Enter Active Step mode, press Func + Active Step
Turn off all but first step (M1), exit mode by pressing Func again.

Enter Step Record, press Func + Step Rec (record)
Play upper A note (13), exit record by pressing Func

Enter Slide Edit - turn on slide for step one - Exit slide edit, press Func

Press play and start adjusting VCF and LFO:

Adjust LFO Rate and Int, then VCF Peak and Cutoff
Adjust LFO Rate again

Adjust VCO Pitches
VCO 2: 22c
VCO 3: -12n

Enjoy!

Note swapping while playing:

Start record, press and hold new note
while holding note, enter slide edit mode
release note and tap slide on active note quickly
Exit slide mode by pressing Func

Drone 2:

Restart volca bass in Global Settings mode: hold Func while power on
Set setting 5 (M5) to on: tP.FL, Tempo Full = 10-600 bpm. Light should be lit on M5. Press record to save setting.

Turn Tempo to 10
Reset volca bass to neutral settings (see above)

Step Record A 8 steps, E 4 steps, F 4 steps, exit record
Switch to Slide Edit, activate slide on all steps
Play
Adjust LFO, VCF and VCO settings to similar as Drone 1

Enjoy!

More complex drone:

Switch to single osc mode - Func + M1,
Select VCO 3
Active Step Edit
Turn off all steps except first 4 A steps (1-4)

Select to VCO 2
Active Step Edit
Turn off all but E steps (9-12)

Play with VCO 2 and VCO 3 pitches
Adjust VCF Peak and Cutoff and maybe VCO

Bladerunner Drone:

Add Haze HD effects from Korg NTS-1

Set Reverb Dryness to about 50 (Reverb + turn B to D50)
Adjust A and B for optimal effect depth

no post effects were used on the final recording
