Ricky Hale - Moonlight Tango (1953) Greg Adams 2025-10-11 | Pop vocal with the Remo Biondi Orchestra. Cash Box gave it a B+ in the June 27, 1953 issue: "Ricky Hale sends up a polished vocal on a lovely lush tango. His feelingful treatment makes the tune ring. A very potent side that could hit big. Ricky has a Tony Martin quality to his voice." I previously posted the B-side, "Donkey Serenade," on this channel.
May Hawks – Wasted Years (1954) Greg Adams 2025-07-20 | Country vocal with Chuck Hatfield and His Treble-Aires. Cash Box rated it a B in the June 12, 1954 issue: "May Hawks comes up with a top-flight reading on a lovely sounding, middle tempo piece. May Hawks – Jealous Love (1953) Greg Adams 2025-01-03 | Country vocal with Lester Thomas & His Southern Pals. Hawks duets with herself via overdubbing. This rendition of "Jealous Love" (a song that was also recorded by the Davis Sisters the same year) was the first record for Hawks, a singer on WJR in Detroit. Billboard gave it a 73/100 rating in the July 11, 1953 issue: "An appealing story-ballad, with imaginative lyrics, receives a good performance from the thrush, with the aid of some 'dub-ins.' Side has merit and could get attention with enough exposure. With a more imaginative arrangement this could have been a great side, but it's still a good one for the market." Flip side is "Year After Year."

Jingle bells are Ringo bells in this Beatles-themed novelty Christmas single from DeKalb, Illinois band the Ravons. The group Three Blonde Mice also released an adaptation of "Jingle Bells" titled "Ringo Bells" in 1964 (on Atco), but it's a different song. Flip side of the Ravons record is "The Beatles for Christmas."

Erskine Hawkins & the Ray Charles Singers – The Yurt (1956) Greg Adams 2024-09-29 | Pop novelty. Erskine Hawkins and the Ray Charles Singers teamed up for this novelty tune that was inspired by a running gag on MBS, the Mutual Broadcasting System, which was in turn inspired by the yurts in the 1956 John Wayne film 'The Conqueror.' Billboard rated "The Yurt" 71/100 in the March 24, 1956 issue: "A novelty—in the manner of 'The Thing' of several years back. The Ray Charles Singers deliver the enigmatic lyric to a heavily accented musical background by Hawkins." Flip side is "Waltz in Blue."
