Super Forbidden Fruit was a religious criticism platformer published in the year 135 A.E. by lone developer Dante Appleghieri. In the game, the player travels through and destroys the 5 segments of hell and the garden of paradise located in the core of the planet. The cartridge and manual used for this restoration were graciously donated by the Russet family, whose ancestors retrieved the partially-burned items from the ashes of a bonfire during the Purging of 155.
Historical context: Significant technological progress had been made under the direction of The Vessel, the offworlders who communicated through it, and the late Rosa III. However, Pomerian science began to stagnate in the early 2nd century of the Ascendant Era. Appleghieri attributed this stagnation to the Church of the Mother and its increasing efforts to condemn Vessel-derived knowledge as heretical. He believed the church maintained its influence by weaponizing the fear of eternal punishment after death, and he was determined to uproot that fear through cathartic fictional violence against the concept of the afterlife.
Numerical symbolism: Appleghieri makes extensive use of the numbers 3 and 5, both musically and visually. Each level’s main theme either makes use of quintuple meter or otherwise divides its segments into fives -- both techniques frequently employed in traditional Motherist hymnal music to signify the Mother’s five children (after whom the moons, terrestrial features, pockets of hell, and more were named). However, the arrangements used during the destruction sequences swap the fives for threes -- a number which gained significance due to the superficial resemblance between The Vessel’s model number (VES-0440) and the Old Cydonian word for the number 3.

Throughout the Kingdom of Cydonia, word began to spread of a strange metal contraption that glowed and moved under its own power. The automaton was soon brought before the king. It began a most unholy performance -- ephemeral creatures appeared on its surface, gesticulating and making guttural incantations in an unknown tongue.
Horrified, the king sentenced those who had brought it before him to death for witchcraft and ordered that the automaton be destroyed. However, when attempts were made to dismantle it, it defended itself with whirling drills and sharp beams of burning light, escaping in the confusion. In the night, the witches also mysteriously disappeared from the dungeon. The events made a lasting impression on the young quincess Rosa.
Now 10 years older, Rosa has been secretly building contraption after contraption, hoping to understand how the metallic visitor seemed so alive. One day, at the smithy where she requisitions parts, a traveler makes reference to a reclusive cult called the Order of the Vessel. Its followers claim to have found eternal life through worshipping an automaton, which they believe to be a message to all of Pome from another world. The quincess decides to set out in search of their hidden temple somewhere on Mount Pyrus to ascertain the truth.

Finishing the Divine Beasts would let me access more shrines, including the DLC). - Everything else is fair game (use glitches if you like! I didn't go crazy with it, though you can see me climb a lamppost and do a bowspin in the video). - Do as many shrines as you can! (I did 115/120 normal shrines and 15/16 DLC shrines).
Problem shrines: - Korsh O'hu (East Gerudo Ruins) - The orbs among the statues of the seven heroines cannot be picked up or ballooned and don’t budge when you use stasis. Not sure there’s a way around this one. - Hawa Koth / The Current Solution (near Tera in Gerudo Desert) is probably not possible unless you clip through a wall. It doesn’t seem likely that you could get the gear into position without magnesis, and there’s an invisible ceiling that prevents you from floating over with one of the blocks. Useless fun fact: the gear floats on water for some reason. - Ha Dahamar / The Water Guides (near Dueling Peaks Stable) starts with a couple walls and a gap. I couldn’t get up. - Kaya Wan / Shields from Water (near Wetland Stable) starts with nothing but a featureless pool of water and a waterfall (you can’t swim up shrine waterfalls). - Daka Tuss / Sunken Scoop (in Lanayru Wetlands) requires a huge button to be depressed underwater (no campfires!). I tossed a bunch of materials in, but I think you’d need at least one large metal object to weigh it down. The only large metal object in the shrine is also underwater. - Sharo Lun / Blind Spots (DLC shrine on eastern Death Mountain) ends with a big waterfall (if you want to figure out a way to catch and ride the chest near the end, um...be my guest).
Here’s where I used forbidden runes to finish the Divine Beasts: Remote bombs: - Fire cannon to free Yunobo in mines - Fire Yunobo out of 4 cannons to approach Vah Rudania - Break Fireblight Ganon’s shield halfway through fight Magnesis: - Spin two cranks in Vah Ruta (stasis + thrown weapons were extremely ineffective, but the crank did budge slightly. I had no bomb arrows at this point, but maybe they would work?) - Open the final door in Yiga Hideout (it’s not a stasis target and you must go through this door to trigger Kohga fight) - Grab metal ball during Kohga fight (again, not a stasis target) - Knock Thunderblight Ganon down halfway through fight (I tried shock and bomb arrows to no effect) Cryonis: - Plug a waterfall in Vah Ruta to access a terminal

Clementine's Log 10 Because VES-0463 recognized us as living beings, it acknowledged Valencia’s command to discontinue the terraforming process. Given enough time, the planet should be able to restore itself, but we’re going to continue gathering data to determine whether we can help speed that process along without creating more problems. It’s the least we could do. I’m sure Proton Labs will be pleased to discover that they can spin all this as a heroic environmental rescue mission. Maybe we can use this as leverage to pressure them into paying us for once. For now, it looks like the initial goal of the expedition has been fulfilled, so I can’t resist closing this entry with:

Clementine's Log 09 We found the probe. Looks like it’s the source of the citric pollution. Valencia was able to download its internal logs despite the archaic interface, and I think we figured out what Project Seed was all about. VES-0463 was marooned when its communication and navigation systems were fried by the planet’s magnetic field. After testing for biochemical compounds and comparing the results against the strict parameters programmed into it back home, Vessy (erroneously) came to the conclusion that the planet was devoid of life and switched over to terraforming mode. It’s been slowly acidifying the atmosphere ever since.
It would have taken thousands of years to make the planet habitable, and there would have been no way to contact planet Grapefruit in the meantime, but I don’t think rescue was the point. The robot contains a cache of genetic information. We think Project Seed must have been a contingency plan in case there was no hope for Grapefruitians. PL21-13 would have become a sort of...artificially-germinated afterlife for the species as a whole. Or at least for the offspring of people who were privileged enough to have their genes included in the project. Kind of creepy to think about.Expedition to PL21-13 - Swamp LuminescenceLemonectric2019-06-01 | Expedition to PL21-13 is an original album about unpaid interns searching a swampy alien planet for a robot sent by their ancestors hundreds of years ago. Clementine's Log 08 We left the ancient city behind and headed further into the trees. This deep in the swamp, the overhanging vegetation blocks out the starlight, but the water is glowing with bioluminescent plant life. We’re up to our knees in the stuff. Zestavius is positive he’s seen plants like this in old photos of planet Grapefruit, and I can’t dispute him on that. I’m starting to wonder if there was more to the Vessy program than we thought.Expedition to PL21-13 - Polluted PlumbingLemonectric2019-05-30 | Expedition to PL21-13 is an original album about unpaid interns searching a swampy alien planet for a robot sent by their ancestors hundreds of years ago. Clementine's Log 07 When everyone recovered from the hive incident, we pushed onward and encountered an overgrown stone city whose foundations are sinking into a mire. Citrella says the condition of the stone ruins suggests occupation by an intelligent species within the last millennium, possibly even contemporaneous with the arrival of VES-0463. There’s no sign of the architects, but they must have been slightly taller than us. We followed our scanners into the city’s underground sewers, a place conspicuously devoid of life but saturated with citric acid. To us, the chemical balance down here would be almost hospitable, but clearly the local wildlife has different standards. Where’d all this come from?Expedition to PL21-13 - Plume-Fly KaleidohiveLemonectric2019-05-28 | Expedition to PL21-13 is an original album about unpaid interns searching a swampy alien planet for a robot sent by their ancestors hundreds of years ago. Clementine's Log 06 We ended up following the polypods into a towering organic structure that pulsed with lights. Inside, oversized feathery insects were feeding on other life forms, who seemed to be completely mesmerized by the colorful patterns sweeping across every surface. I tested some glowing goop from a nearby wall and started forming a hypothesis. The pulsing lights of the hive appear to be the result of a symbiotic relationship with bioluminescent microbes. The microbes communicate with each other by releasing timed bursts of chemicals and flashes of light. If organized in the right way (say, by meticulously sculpting the microbes’ food source into ridges), the pattern attracts and hypnotizes the flies’ prey. While immobilized by the display, the prey is injected with digestive fluids and later ingested.
I assumed the hypnotic effects weren’t working on our alien biology, but then I realized that the reason my crewmates had been so quiet was because they had been in a trance the whole time. I had to physically nudge them along to get them out of the hive. Fortunately, the insects never showed much interest -- I don’t imagine we smelled edible, especially inside these suits. As for the reason I wasn’t affected by the light show, my best guess is that the polarization of my malfunctioning visor offered some level of protection. Guess I gotta thank Proton Labs for that one.Expedition to PL21-13 - Plump PolypodsLemonectric2019-05-25 | Expedition to PL21-13 is an original album about unpaid interns searching a swampy alien planet for a robot sent by their ancestors hundreds of years ago. Clementine's Log 05 Not just life - SENTIENCE! Citrella spotted some movement in the underbrush, and we discovered three of these critters. They each have 8 stubby legs, a chitinous beak, and a single eye that can shift into different positions in the head. Their skin is a dull purple, faintly translucent, and a little squishy. I’m calling them polypods for now, but I’m itching to sit down and work out some proper nomenclature. They stopped to look at us alien invaders, but made no recognizable attempt to communicate. Scans indicate their biochemical makeup is totally incompatible with citric life. We’re going to follow them into a large cluster of the “trees” -- they still look tree-like to me, probably because the vegetation that grows over and hangs from the gas-filled sacs does a lot to hide the underlying form.Expedition to PL21-13 - Marshlands of PL21-13Lemonectric2019-05-23 | Expedition to PL21-13 is an original album about unpaid interns searching a swampy alien planet for a robot sent by their ancestors hundreds of years ago. Clementine's Log 04 LIFE! A whole marsh, in fact! This flora wouldn’t have met the old hypothetical standards for life back when the Vessy program was beginning, but we’ve learned a thing or two over the centuries. Zestavius is taking samples. I’ve never seen him so animated. I’m curious about the things on the edge of the marsh that I can only describe as “trees” -- they seem to bob around in strange ways, but we’ll need to get a closer look to be sure. Interestingly, we’re seeing higher concentrations of citric acid than the original readings from VES-0463, but the air is still toxic (to us), so we’re wearing the environmental suits.Expedition to PL21-13 - Ultrapurple PlummetLemonectric2019-05-21 | Expedition to PL21-13 is an original album about unpaid interns searching a swampy alien planet for a robot sent by their ancestors hundreds of years ago. Clementine's Log 03 We’re in the lander, descending through a dense, reddish-purple atmosphere. We had to scramble into our suits and board the lander sooner than expected; alarms were blaring to warn us about a potential containment problem in the uranium module. The suits seem to be functional, aside from the fact that the polarizing filter on my visor won’t turn off. Temperature warnings in the lander caused some panicked examinations of the heat shield data readout, but it all appears to be holding together. I’m guessing they cut some costs on the temperature sensors. ...I’m hoping it’s the sensors, anyway.Expedition to PL21-13 - Lump in the CircuitsLemonectric2019-05-18 | Expedition to PL21-13 is an original album about unpaid interns searching a swampy alien planet for a robot sent by their ancestors hundreds of years ago. Clementine's Log 02 We’re in orbit. Some kind of magnetic field emanating from the planet is interfering with communication signals, and bulbous growths are sprouting from some of the more intricate circuitry. Looks like there were some flaws in the radiation shielding. If we hadn’t had some redundant systems in place, we’d definitely be in trouble. This must be why VES-0463 went missing. Fortunately, thanks to recent laws establishing standards for environmental suits (the regulations for which were followed to the bare minimum by Proton Labs), the team will theoretically have something safe to wear down on the surface while the ship repairs itself.
I can rarely get this outdated tablet to connect to the quantum network, even on a good day, so it looks like nobody’s going to get any reports back home for a while. That’s a load off my mind. I’m going to use these logs as a personal record and just type up some official-looking stuff on our trip back.Expedition to PL21-13 - Proton Labs Uranium ModuleLemonectric2019-05-16 | Expedition to PL21-13 is an original album about unpaid interns searching a swampy alien planet for a robot sent by their ancestors hundreds of years ago. Clementine's Log 01 We’ve just awoken from our crisper pods. Hard to believe it’s been several months since we left planet Orange, but my body IS feeling pretty stiff, and the ship IS decelerating. According to the computer, we should be entering orbit around PL21-13 in a few hours. Zestavius, Citrella, and Valencia are all checking on their assigned equipment. I’ll be examining the data from the nuclear power core, but first I want to review the mission.
We’ve come here to look for a robot - specifically VES-0463, one of the Vessy probes launched from planet Grapefruit during the Plague just shy of 350 years ago. An astrohistorian recently dredged up an old report about this robot, finding that it lost contact in orbit around PL21-13 after sending just enough data to determine that the planet was incapable of supporting life. Of course, we now know that our ancestors were a little too strict about how they defined life.
The report also briefly mentions that the robot “may have initiated Project Seed,” a term nobody has ever seen referenced anywhere else. So there’s some historical value in our expedition, but I’m really in it for the possibility that we could discover life. Our stated mission is twofold: determine what happened to the robot and gather environmental data about the planet.Album preview - Expedition to PL21-13Lemonectric2019-05-14 | I'm releasing my next original album this Thursday, 5/16. Keep an eye out for it! I'll be posting it on Bandcamp and sharing it on Twitter, Facebook, Soundcloud, and YouTube, so follow me wherever you like.
Expedition to PL21-13 contains a mishmash of retro sounds with an emphasis on things that sounded purple to me, paired with a story about unpaid interns searching a swampy alien planet for a robot sent through space by their ancestors hundreds of years ago. You'll get a multi-page PDF full of flavor text when you download the album, if you’re into that kind of thing. Yes, I read too much sci-fi.
The album is a follow-up to Zest Quest, which is available for free/pay what you want on Bandcamp.
