In this episode of Women at Work, we speak with Women's Audio Mission founder Terri Winston as well as various staff members to learn more about this organization that is working to change the face of sound.

Women's Audio Mission (WAM) is a San Francisco and Oakland-based recording studio and nonprofit dedicated to the advancement of women and gender-expansive people in music/audio production and creative technology.
WAM uses music and media arts training, mentorship, and conferences to serve over 4,000 women, girls, and gender-expansive people annually in order to inspire them to amplify their voices and become the innovators of tomorrow.

Terri talks about her own journey as a woman in the audio engineering field, and the challenges she faced along the way. We also hear from WAM staff members about their experiences working with young women and gender-expansive people to help them develop their skills and confidence in this field.

San Francisco Pride City Hall Weddings Celebration 2023

SFGovTV 2023-06-26 | San Francisco City Administrator Carmen Chu and the Office of the County Clerk invited couples to celebrate their love and tie the knot at a special LGBTQ+ Pride celebration on Friday, June 23rd at San Francisco City Hall. As many as 250 couples said "I do", kicking off the annual Pride festivities which have now become a proudly held tradition that celebrates the City's LGBTQ+ history and culture.

SFGovTV covered the event to showcase this highlight video, capturing all the happiness, love and support.

SF Pride Marriage History:
In 2004, the County Clerk’s Office issued its first same-sex marriage license to longtime partners Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon upon the direction of then-Mayor Gavin Newsom. In 2013, the Office stayed open throughout the weekend to serve the long lines of couples waiting at City Hall to wed after the Supreme Court overturned the state’s ban on same-sex marriages.

The LGBTQ+ Pride Flag History

SFGovTV 2023-06-21 | The LGBTQ+ flag, also known as the Pride flag, has become a powerful symbol representing the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community worldwide. It has been a source of unity, visibility, and celebration for LGBTQ+ individuals and their allies for several decades.

Initially designed by Gilbert Baker in 1978, the original flag featured eight vibrant colors, each carrying a specific meaning. The colors included hot pink (sexuality), red (life), orange (healing), yellow (sunlight), green (nature), turquoise (magic/art), indigo (serenity), and violet (spirit). However, due to the unavailability of hot pink fabric, it was later reduced to the iconic six-stripe design that we recognize today.

In recent years, there has been an exciting evolution in the design of the LGBTQ+ flag, introducing new variations and inclusiveness. The progressiveness of the community has led to the creation of additional flags, each representing different identities within the LGBTQ+ spectrum. These include the Transgender Pride flag, Bisexual Pride flag, Pan-sexual Pride flag, Non-Binary Pride flag, and many more.

Moreover, the inclusiveness of the LGBTQ+ community extends beyond gender and sexuality. Flags like the Philadelphia Pride flag and the Progress Pride flag have been developed to represent intersections with racial, cultural, and social justice movements. These new designs embrace diversity and recognize the interconnections of various identities and struggles.

Assessor-Recorder Torres and HERAs Estate Planning Program

SFGovTV 2023-06-12 | The Estate Planning Program is a partnership between the Office of the Assessor-Recorder and the organization, Housing and Economic Rights Advocates (HERA), to provide free and affordable estate planning services. Since launching in 2022, 100 low-and moderate-income San Franciscans have worked with HERA to receive estate plans.

In June 2023, Assessor-Recorder Torres and HERA announced an expansion of the program, offering 100 more estate plans for residents and families. This video includes footage from an Estate Planning Workshop hosted at the Booker T. Washington Center in partnership with San Francisco Housing Development Corporation, during which Assessor Torres, HERA, and SFHDC outlined the importance of estate planning and connected residents to the Estate Planning Program.

Paper Tree: Celebrating AAPI Month and SF Local Small Business

SFGovTV 2023-05-31 | For #AAPI Heritage Month, we want to share the different culture and traditions that our community shares with one another. We met owner and manager Linda Mihara of Paper Tree in Japantown. Linda shares with us how she wanted to combat Asian Hate that was prevalent during the COVID-19 Pandemic. She created a website for a project 'Hearts For Love' in which she asked the community to fold a paper heart and send to the store. The outpour of love from the community continues to show as they still receive paper hearts until this day.

SFPD OIS Virtual Town Hall - May 26, 2023

SFGovTV 2023-05-27 | As part of the San Francisco Police Department’s commitment to accountability and transparency with our community, a virtual town hall meeting will be held on Friday, May 26, 2023 at 3:00 p.m. to provide the community with an update on the investigation of the officer-involved shooting that occurred at 100 block on Friday, May 19, 2023.

This virtual town hall will be streamed live on SFGovTV’s YouTube page ( / sfgtv .

Following a presentation by SFPD command staff, a call-in number will be provided to viewers wishing to offer public comment.

We meet professional Chinese calligrapher Jojo Liu, who has taken it upon herself to keep the fading art of Chinese Calligraphy alive through her solo woman owned business, Jojo's Calligraphy.
