After the performance, members of What Would an HIV Doula Do? will facilitate conversation and offer additional education about the play and the history it reveals.

Stoller; Women, The AIDS Crisis, and the Centers for Disease Control, by Maxine Wolfe; and writing and editing by Elizabeth Koke and Theodore (ted) Kerr for What Would an HIV Doula Do?

Hart Island is located on an uninhabited strip of land off the Bronx in the Long Island Sound. Since 1869, more than a million people have been buried on Hart Island, including early AIDS patients, unidentified and unclaimed New Yorkers, immigrants, incarcerated people, artists and actors, and, most recently, approximately ten percent of New Yorkers who died of COVID-19.
Many of the people buried on Hart Island are shrouded in anonymity. The island has no headstones or plaques, just numbered markers. In many cases, explanations for how bodies came to be buried there are hard to find. Our series tells the stories of seven people—a man who lived in a city park, a writer, a missing college student, an estranged uncle, a composer, and a father who struggled with addiction—who were buried on Hart Island through a range of circumstances. Some were lost in the system after their deaths, while others had been cut off from family and friends for years. One chose Hart Island as his final resting place. Each story is told by the people who knew them best, some of whom overcame tremendous obstacles to uncover what happened to their loved ones.
The event will feature voices from the series retelling the stories live on stage, as well as music and audio clips from the series. The Unmarked Graveyard explores the ways we think about anonymity in death, and how community, class, and mental health shape what happens after we die.

The stories we tell about the future have the power to shape the world we eventually create. From creative scientific solutions to climate change, to an economy built on ecological restoration, to the pursuit of right relationships in social systems and inclusive design, imagination has the power to shift what we see as possible.
Inspired by cutting-edge literary movements, such as Afrofuturism, hopepunk, and solarpunk, Afterglow imagines intersectional worlds in which no one is left behind—where humanity prioritizes equitable climate solutions. Whether through adaptation, reform, or a new understanding of survival, Afterglow offers flickers of hope, even joy, and a springboard for exploring how fiction can help create a better reality.
The SciFri Book Club from Science Friday and Looking Forward from Grist invite you to join us for a live event featuring New York Times bestselling author Morgan Jerkins (This Will Be My Undoing, Wandering In Strange Lands and Caul Baby), environmental health professor and researcher Dr. Yoshira Ornelas Van Horne, Grist’s Creative Manager for Climate Fiction Tory Stephens, and artist and social movement strategist Aisha Shillingford, exploring the role that creativity and imagination play in helping society envision and achieve a just, sustainable, and inclusive world for all people.
The event will also feature live readings from OBIE Award-winning writer and actor Eric Lockley (playwright, Sweet Chariot, The Public Theatre).
This event is made possible thanks to sponsorship support from Marine Stewardship Council.

For this initiative, students of the local City-As-School were invited to utilize imagery from the NYPL Picture Collection. The collaborative series of murals entitled “sampling” explores visual and musical sampling –– a tradition shared by both Hip-Hop music and the visual art form of collage. Like sampling a track in a song, the students of City-As-School took pre-existing media and transformed it into their own collective artwork.
The murals are on view in the windows on Varick Street and Charlton Street throughout August 2023.
