**NOTE: This song is the de-facto "Phil bomb of all phil bomb" shows -- To be more clear, I specifically asked charlie miller for the *Absolute most phil-heavy show he's ever worked on* and this show is the most bass-heavy grateful dead show you will find, the most, it is 100% the most prominent "phil show" of all time. So, if you've ever wanted to find "the grateful dead show with the most bass" - here it is! (set 2 coming soon.. read below!)

Here is a "before and after" picture of this show -- keep in mind that the picture on the left acutally *already is* worked on from the tape transfer. The image on the right should illustrate very clearly how dramatic this upgrade proces is.

This upgrade is using the latest methods for "enhacing" the video, it's very power consuming, and I have one other show ready for tomorrow (not just a single set, I will post set 2 of this show in the coming days though!)

Given the amount of time it takes even for these computers to render out 3 hours of video (multiple days per show while using over 2kW of power the entire time just for one process in this stack) -- I am thinking that we might be better served by posting individual sets a lot of times to make sure there isn't huge gaps in the content being posted.

I've been thinking about hte best ways to make sure we can get back to posting videos at least ever-other-day for a while now and without adding *even more* computing power, this level of quality improvemnet is just going to take a lot of processing time. Keep in mind, we are using Nvidia RTX 5090 graphics cards here, so there's no "upgrading to better stuff" -- the only options to go faster is to add more machines right now. I think in the next 6-12 months, we will have a better solution (and i am working to further optimize the process on the software side to work faster while getting hte same (or better) quality. )

GD 1990 03 24 - Help on the Way - Upgraded video (1080p) - produced from original source.

Christopher Hazard 2025-09-18 | Long read below. Basically, I'm going to try to host a live webcast this week to Q&A you guys with ideas on how to move forward with video upgrades. If you read below, this is a very complex question given the new upgrade methods are an order of magnitude better than what we've been able to produce in the past (transformational instead of just "cleaned up") and it's going to keep getting better -- the issue is "time". .and somehow, with two 5090s, this still isn't where we need to be to be able to do this unless we aim to do 1 show per week ... maybe 2 on a good week.
I've been working hard on trying to figure it out. There's a lot ot read below.
Again, I think a well laid out live discussion of this topic will make things clearer, especially if i have the ability to illustrate exactly what our options are, show people some comparisons on what we can expect from different processes, and just talk to people and see what the consensuses is. (Basically, full shows are *really* hard to do but there's also good reason to aim for the moon at the same time)

Anyway

Obviously if you look at the original video, this is more "transformational" than just a simple "upgrade" like we've been doing for hte past few years.

I plan on doing a live stream to talk about hte future of video upgrades, challenges that lay ahead, and how we plan on attacking the archive to get the most efficient use out of the upgrades.

We do have the ability to push even more detail and up to 4k every easily on most bootlegs. The goal has been to try to "break it" by checking how "low in quality" we can go before the upgrade comes out looking "bad" (artifacts, etc)

The computational investment is of utmost importance here.
With two computers both running the fastest graphical hardware on the market -- and each graphics card (not whole computer) using close to 600 watts a piece)

We are limited to "1 frame per second per computer" in the most intensive part of the upgrade process.... With two computers, that obviously gives us two frames per second...

using a deinterlace to 30 frames per second that means we are generating 1-second of video every ~15 seconds, or 4 seconds of video per minute. which easily translates to 4 minutes of video per hour.

This translates to just over 1.5 hours of video per 24-hour period if we fully dedicate two of the most powerful desktops to only doing this process for an entire 24-hour period...

This puts us at nearly 48-hours of fully dedicated compute time for 3-hours of video (most GD shows tend to be 2 hours 30 minutes or so)

This does *not* include the extra hours that will go into more manual editing. Tack on another 5-10 hours here.

Obviously, these numbers are obscene, and I haven't even gotten into what it takes to get us to 4K yet.

This is where we are going to have to make some decisions on whether to chase the dragon, invest more, keep optimizing the modeling/coding going on behind the scenes to speed up the processes, etc.

Obviously, there's no easy decision here. The quality of the upgrade of these videos is beyond upgrade, as stated already -- this is downright transformational from what the original sources provide.

I plan to host a live Q&A on this with the commmunity to try to get some guidance. Throwing more computers at it, sure it would help. Will the processes get more optimized? Yes, probably. We are hoping to increase the speed by quite a bit without sacrificing accuracy.

This is this sstuff I have been working on for a year in the videos where it looks like jerry's glasses are melting off, etc... This is what I was talking about when i said "Look, to get from point A to B we need to do this"

Now that we have the capability, we need to have a conversation with the community on what people want to see. Trying to brute all of these through just isn't going to work with the current machines (even though one is brand new and the "old" one has been retrofitted with the latest and greatest GPU on teh market)

I have a third editing machine that has been down, and the graphics card needs to go to nvidia to be checked out. There's a small chance we get a miracle there and they swap it out for another 5090... If not, that setup is 2 generations old and with this stuff, it's not exactly "worthles" at all, but it's literally half the speed at best and cannot handle the scope of work i'm throwing at some of these (vram limitations)

What is important to realize is that yes, i can dedicate more seats to this,but it increases the electrical footprint, and in the end I also need to be able to ... work on stuff outside of being a render factory, so i need at least one "free" computer whenever I need to sit down and work, so while i can dedicate all machines to doing this work, I also need to always be able to pull one off the line to be able to do *literally everything else that i need to do on the computer*

All is good, just catching up with work, and the new video workflow I've been working on takes substantially longer to produce but will be well worth it... (Even with the newer equipment that we spent over 6000 dollars on this summer, things are just going to be slower for a little while.. The newer processes are far more intense.)

I am not going to take credit for "doing anything useful" by just posting other people's audio work that I only invested an hour or two into throwing some graphics on and making it available on youtube. :)

Grateful Dead - July 4, 1986 - SET ONE - [1080p HD Restoration] Rich Stadium - Orchard Park, NY

Christopher Hazard 2025-09-05 | You've probably seen parts of this show, but the first set never got a good transfer, and this video from @sneakerfacevids441 which @gratefuldavis6615 had recently done some editing to is currently the only viable recording to exist. (and was kinda rare to see overall)

First off, RIP to Nick (sneakerface) --- who recently passed away. Way too early (F Cancer) -- I wish he would have still been here to see this. It's part of the Farm Aid set that nobody else has had a copy of in circulation.... and until recently, I really had no ability to "make it any better" in any way that really mattered. Josh had done some work with the colors, interlacing and sound... and we really had to kinda leave it at that because it was just too far gone with existing technology. Though I did have the "idea" to use stable diffusion as an AI upscaler at the time -- it just was never viable until the current hardware allowed for this to be completed using almost two days of compute time and over 20kWh of electricity... (with the new graphics equipment ... RTX 5090s)

Admittingly, it's still far from perfect, but it's now far better off (and way more watchable) than it ever has been in the past, and I hope people enjoy it rather than hate on the weakness of relying on "AI"

Grateful Dead Louie Louie September 20, 1988 (4K Remaster - New workflow test in progress)

Intentionally testing on dark scenes which are the most difficult to pull detail out of. This is not a final product, but it's getting "close" to what will be the new normal.

Thanks everyone for the continuing support, both with the financial needs and with the kind words about my recent loss with the doggo. (I keep looking behind my back to check on him on the couch. he isn't there. it's just a cycle I'm going to have to work through over time. It's hard to lose something that went almost literally everywhere you went for well over a decade. Who slept when you slept and ate when you ate.) He went to work with me every day, out shopping, on airplanes, genuinely everywhere except the grocery store. I'm still trying to process that loss and it's going to take a lot of time, that's all i know right now.

The same workflow on "better" sources will be quite a bit more profound, but if you have the time to look at the original source of this, I think you'll be very impressed with the progress :)

Thanks to Charlie Milller for the semi-recent sound upgrade on this (part of the ultramatrix 24-bit collection))

Both camera souces here are from anonymous tapers, and with the first camera trhere's no info about anyone who did any of the work to record, transfer, digitize, etc... The second tape is also anonymous taper and The tape was supplied to K. Tobin who transferred the VHS to digital (both tapes were "native" in format and encoded to mpeg-2 - so DVD compression)

This is the future, and will likely be the causation of a full reboot to the channel to finally do these the way we've always WANTED them to be done. It's been a matter of skills developing and tech catching up both with hardware and software. All three things needed to happen, and we're currently at 1.5 out of 3. I'll be able to post more singles in this type of quality semi regualrly in the mean time, and when the rest of the pieces fall ito place, I'lll let everyone know we're going to figure out the logistics of making it all come togeether to be able to finally do what we've always wanted to do with creating genuinely "4k looking remasters" out of bootleg tapes.

This is a short but neat documentary that aired on PBS in 1991 about the Grateful Dead.

I am using this video to illustrate some new restoration and upgrading techniques -- therefore I am uploading the original as well so you can compare them to each other to see what a source looks like that we start with vs a "finished" product (note: There absolutely were some steps cut here, i didn't remove flicker or some little other things. This is mostly being used to illustrate the ability to upgrade the picture quality from the original in a very dramatic way even compared to past videos)

The last time we worked on this, some of the processes i used on this video created a lot of undesirable results in the video (jerry's glasses melting off, etc) .... This video is my first attempt at a completely new workflow that I'm still very much evolving into something that should be very useful for tapes like these... tapes that aren't exactly in good shape and have been ridden hard over the years... There are some brand new methods that were used here that i haven't appplied to any videos we have worked on in the past, and i hope it's a great foundation moving forward so that we get a clearer pathway to making these sub-par videos shine as much as we can possibly make them shine -- without causing any undesireable effects. This will take time, but I do think this viedeo is great progress compared to the last one :) (and i'm sure you will as well!)

Grateful Dead [1080p HD Restoration] July 12, 1976- Orpheum Theatre - San Francisco, CA -Soundcheck

Christopher Hazard 2025-03-13 | Have been playing with this for a while trying to get rid of a lot of jittery/flickery mess and some more consistent colors and detail out of it.

I think this is where we've landed for now. I didn't want to push things any harder with noise reduction because it was starting to tear into the detail too much. Used a few different upscaling techniques to get it up to 1080p resolution. Lot of color work done here, just a lot in general. If you've seen this one before you'll probably appreciate the improvement :)

Grateful Dead - April 17 1972 - 4k Remaster test screning (2025)

This wil llikely play in low bitrate 1080p during the "premiere mode" because youtube loves people who watch premieres so much that they downgrade the video for that special occasion :D
It will be finished, but there will be errors in this that need to be gone over and rectified. That said, just enjoy it for what it is. :)

Feel fre to point out any crazy weird face mutations etc. I am trying to fine tune an interpolation model that uses pre-and-post frames to reconstruct the current frame with more detail. It's not perfect, but we're getting there. Pushing to 4k is the big stretch here.

Anyways, it should be decent, but do expect anomolies as I'm continuing to fine tune this and figure out how to shore up the shortcomings so we can make things better-er in the future :)

Ok... The description is a joke, the camera is shaky but the reason we worked on this show is because the video although having some weird issues was workable and i think very watchable and ... ok, it's just a great show and will blow your mind if for a November '94 JGB if you're someone averse to listening to 90's jerry. This show is fire front to back. Jerry's playing is absolutely focused and on point the entire show and he saves his best for last.

Camera isn't shaking so much as dancing with the camera man, i did a mild stabilization on it, it would have ruined the video had i tried to get more out of that deal.. i think it's a nice balance.

That said, this is all about the show the show the show and the great audio/video combo we have to be able to re-live it with.. DO NOT SLEEP ON THIS SHOW JUST BECAUSE YOU SEE "1994"

This is a good show, but obviously not the best starting source with this video.. There are a lot of good close up shots of the band here and generally decent, but obvious the tape is not the master and was highly worn, the recording itself is a bit shaky, but it was worth saving and polishing up ... new sound source. plenty of work done here,

This is just a test of an SDR to HDR conversion I was playiing with and, well, it's not perfect but it's ... something? :D

If you want to know if you're getting "HDR" just look at the gear where you set things from 480p/1080p etc ... it should say "HDR" instead of just "HD" on that... Most modern iphones will play hdr fine and a good bulk of android phones should be able to as well... That said i'm always more focused on bigger displays when it comes to everything on this page :) Same drill on a computer or TV ... set the resolution and HDR should be there if your display supports it.

This is a method called inverse tone mapping where we can extrapolate a high dynamic range picture from old standard dynamic range footage. I already have a *very expensive* way of doing this rather well, but have been trying to hone in a way that is virtually free and am getting to the point where it just needs "tuned" a little better. This is a pet project that i've been chipping at here and therre for the past 2 years. HDR is the biggest leap in imagine quality in our lifetime (IMO) so being able to apply it to old video and have it actually look good (this is quite a mixed bag, i get it, there's some good and some not so good.... but it's progress for sure)
