For when you need to shape the light of your larger point source units in a more exacting way than with intensifiers. You do lose output because the light passes through a lens. You can also add traditional style Series 2 ETC barrels with an ETC adapter. My experience with gobo clarity and evenness across the field of view was not what I'm used to with a purpose built ellipsoidal so do your own testing if this is an important capability your you.
Aputure Storm 1200x: A First Look and Comparison Meet The Gaffer 2024-09-09 | Meet The Gaffer #350. An exploration of the 1200x from Aputure, a tunable white unit that incorporates the new BLAIR light engine. My first look reviews are somewhat from the hip, in much the same way when you bring a new unit on set. You have some idea of how it will perform, but you're not sure, so you plug it in, turn it on, and see what happens. I don't spend weeks with a unit before I turn the camera on to talk about it. I take it out of the box and see what it does. Sometimes I have to reshoot, but my goal is to give you my initial reactions, just like you would if you were pulling the unit out for the first time. If this sounds like an excuse, you're right! I only have so much time before I have to be on set again. LOL. And that's why I prefer to use units on set for a while before talking about them. I would rather talk about fixtures that have some road miles on them, but that's not always possible when you receive a unit a week before it debuts to the public or if you receive the unit with plenty of time but have few shoots in which that fixture could work well. Plus I don't want to over-hype a unit I haven't spent much time with in the field. Comparing a Book Light Key to a CRLS Key. Meet The Gaffer 2024-02-18 | Meet The Gaffer #337. Comparing different ways of creating a main source for a sit down interview in a home. First, there is a comparison between a book light using a 2K Open Face tungsten unit and the same book light using a Nanlux Evoke 1200B in a fresnel. Next we take the book light away and use the 1200B to bounce light toward the subject with a CRLS #4 (50 cm). And finally, the indirect approaches are compared to a direct approach using a Godox F600Bi with the diffusion that comes with the unit and with a double break of a 6x6 frame of magic cloth.This episode was also the first time using the Hollyland MARS 1 enhanced 5 inch wi-fi enabled monitor. A handy tool when you are lighting by yourself.

Christmas Program 2023: The Boy Who Cried Hallelujah Meet The Gaffer 2023-12-20 | This is not a Meet The Gaffer episode. My daughter wrote and directed this program at the church we attend in Palo Alto, CA. It's a small congregation, but for a few decades we have been putting together quirky, glorified readers-theater type Christmas Programs. It's been an enjoyable tradition, and, along with the Sundays of Advent, a great way to feel that the holiday is underway. However and in whatever area of the world you celebrate, may peace be with you.Lighting wise, I usually throw up a few tungsten units to augment the existing ETC Tungsten PARS that have been lighting the front of the church for the past 10 years or so. But this time around, I put up two Kinoflo Air Max units on left and right outside and two Freestyle 31 panels on left and right closer to the center. Behind the two building cut outs are two verticalized freestyle 41’s for the Angel choir. The pinch point is that we share the space with another congregation that vacates the premises about a 1/2 hour before we need to go on, so we keep all the floor set up to a minimum. It’s a very, Just In Time approach to theater. The transitions were controlled wirelessly through Blackout. I missed a couple cues, along with the placement of the spot the second time it comes on. We do our best with the available prep time and personnel!
