4x4 SNOWBLOWER?
updated
Today we'll be discussing the 4 main shear pins that MTD uses in both of their 2 stage, and 3 stage snow blowers.
This video will cover all of MTD's various brands of snow blowers from 2005 to present (that use a shear-pin, not a shear-bolt) including but not limited to the brands listed below;
Cub Cadet, Troy-Bilt, Craftsman, Columbia, White Outdoors, Bolens, Remington, Yard-Man, YardWorks, Yard Machines, MTD Pro, MTD Gold, MTD and Black & Decker.
It should seem obvious that you would use a 2 stage shear pin in a 2 stage snow blower, and the 3 stage shear pins in a 3 stage snow blower.
All 2005+ MTD 2 stage snow blowers use either the shorter (.25" x 1.5") 738-04124A or longer (.25" x 1.75") 738-04155 shear pin.
Which one you need will depend on whether it's a 300, 500 or 600 series snow blower with a 3/4" auger shaft. Or the larger 800 and 900 series snow blower with the 1" auger shaft.
However, between 2015 and late 2017, all 3 stage MTD snow blowers were designed to use, and sold with the 2 stage 738-04124A GR2 shear pins installed in them.
In late August of 2017, MTD issued a service advisory (MTD-228) recommending that MTD dealers upgrade any and all 3 stage snow blowers (manufactured from 2015-2017), with the newly designed 738-05273 GR5 shear pin, that has the #3 on the head.
The reason for this service advisory, was because MTD noticed the weaker 2 stage GR2 shear pins were breaking far to frequently in their 3 stage snow blowers, so an upgrade to a stronger GR5 shear pin was needed.
All 3 stage MTD snow blower models manufactured after September 2017 should already have the 738-05273 GR5 shear pin (with the #3 on the head) installed in it.
If yours does not, the shear pins should be upgraded, as the newer GR5 shear pin is stronger than the old GR2 shear pin. Replacing these will reduce down time, as you shouldn't have to replace broken shear pins as often.
Additionally, all 3 stage MTD snow blowers manufactured after 2019+ require using the newly designed (and stronger) 738-06654 GR8 hex head shear pin (marked with the letter A on the head) in the central "3rd stage" accelerator fins.
The outer "1st stage" auger fins on 2019+ models require using the 738-05273 GR5 shear pins.
The reason I made this video, was to clear up any confusion there might be.
As shown in the video, I ran both the model and serial number of the Columbia snow blower into MTD's official website, and both the owners manual and illustrated parts list (parts diagram) showed that the 3 stage snow blower was supposed to take the 2 stage shear pins.
This happened because many of MTD's owners manuals and illustrated parts listings are outdated, and have not been updated.
Also, unlike the average consumer, I have access to an MTD dealer parts portal called "PartSmart" which grants me access to information that may not be publicly, or widely available at the time.
Follow the steps in this video, and you'll have the necessary information to install the correct parts into your 3 stage snow blowers!

Today we'll be looking at a Briggs and Stratton 1227MD snow blower, model: 1696619-02
This snow blower came into the shop needing some replacement parts (drive belt idler return spring, shear bolts and a primer bulb) and I was shocked at how much these parts cost!
These overpriced replacement parts are all OEM, so they're directly from Briggs and Stratton (you can't buy them anywhere else).
These overpriced parts might be one of the main reasons why you may want to think twice before purchasing this snow blower.
In all honesty, this machine is constructed fairly well. It has limited plastic, a dual impeller belt and also a cogged drive belt. However, none of these parts can be purchased aftermarket, they all have to be purchased through Briggs and Stratton.
That means they're the ones setting the price, and if the parts go on backorder, you'll be stuck with a snow blower that may not work.

Today we'll be working on a Cub Cadet snow blower with a PowerMore 420cc (690-WUA) engine.
This came into the shop for repair because a squirrel or mouse chewed through the spark plug wire.
In order to fix this, the ignition module (sometimes referred to as a coil) will need to be replaced.
To replace this part, the plastic carburetor cover, and metal flywheel cover will have to be removed.
I'll be taking you through each step, from disassembly and replacing the ignition module, to reassembly.

Does your lawn mower shut off after just a few minutes of cutting grass?
Today we'll be working on a Yard Machines by MTD riding lawn mower, with a Briggs and Stratton engine.
This engine only runs on choke, and shuts off minutes after the choke lever is disengaged.
I'll be explaining Vapor Lock, and how trapped air inside the fuel tank can prevent fuel from flowing to the carburetor, essentially starving the engine for fuel.
This is usually caused by a clogged fuel cap vent, and easily fixed by simply cleaning the debris from the vent hole.
If you can't clean the fuel cap, this one can be replaced if necessary 751-0603B
Also, some fuel caps vent through the threads, so make sure not to tighten the fuel cap down too much.

Today we'll be working on a Troy-Bilt TB30 rear engine riding lawn mower with a Powermore (built for MTD) 382cc engine, commonly referred to as the XP380S or T84 / T90 engine.
When you purchase the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) MTD Air Filter part number 937-05129, you get a small packet of 350 silicone grease labeled part number 737-05131.
There are no instructions supplied with the air filter, nor is there any information regarding this packet of grease in the riding lawn mowers owners manual, or even in the official MTD engine service manual.
When searching the web for this 737-05131 part number, nothing comes up, as it's technically a "Not for Sale" item. This means you cannot purchase the grease separately, as it only comes shipped with this particular air filter.
Today I'll be discussing why they include this grease, as well as what you're supposed to do with it.
When looking at the air filters for the Powermore 420cc or 547cc engines, they do not come with this small package of grease.
My best guess is that MTD ran into a sealing issue with this particular air filter / air box assembly, and decided the best solution was to use a bit of grease to improve air flow through the filter itself.
By sealing the air filter to intake elbow connection, this increases the air flow through the paper filter, limiting the amount of fine debris entering the carburetor.

Today we'll be diagnosing a John Deere L110 riding lawn mower that's running rough.
Instead of draining the entire fuel tank and replacing it with fresh fuel, I 1st need to diagnose whether or not the customers fuel is bad, and if that is what's causing the engine to run poorly.
By using a small test fuel tank of my own design, I can isolate my customers fuel. If the engine runs better with my fuel hooked up, then the source of the issue will have been identified.

Today we'll be working on a Yardworks 3-in-1 Self Propelled lawn mower, with a Briggs and Stratton 725IS engine. Model: 060-1334-6
The "IS" Stands for "InStart" (short for Instant Start) and refers to Briggs and Stratton's battery operated electric start system for the 725 series of engines.
That's right, this lawn mower has a removable battery, that powers an electric starter, which is used to start the engine, using the push button control on the handle.
If there's ever an issue with the charger, battery, or the electric starter, there is no way to start this mower by hand, as it is not equipped with a recoil pull cord!
Some owners of this lawn mower have mentioned in reviews that they are worried about the push button start failing in the future, as it doesn't have a pull start backup. These concerns are valid, and in the case of this mower, came true.
After just 2 years of operation, the charger failed to properly charge the battery. Both the charger and battery could need replacing.
At a cost of $178 for the charger, and $188 for the battery, it simply isn't worth the cost, considering you could face the same issues in the future.
Our solution? Simply convert the Electric Start system to a manual pull start, by swapping out the plastic recoil starter housing.
Using the parts shown in this video, you could complete this conversion for a low cost of around $30 Canadian, and never have to worry about batteries or chargers ever again!
We used the recoil, top plastic cover and pull cord guide off a scrap Craftsman lawn mower we had in the back, so this conversion didn't cost us anything.
If you wanted to purchase all OEM parts (from Briggs and Stratton) this conversion would cost you approximately $215, which is still cheaper than replacing a battery and charger!
If you had a bad charger like we did, you can also sell the electric starter and battery that you removed, to further decrease your total cost into this conversion.

So today we're working on a Storm HG202B pressure washer, powered by a Honda GC160 5hp engine.
This engine was ran low on oil, which most likely lead to the engine running hot, resulting in a seized intake valve.
The intake valve seized in the downward (open) position, which allowed combustion to escape through the intake valve, and out of the air box.
The customer didn't want to spend a lot of money (thinking the engine was toast) and was hoping for a "quick fix" which is exactly what they got (same day repair).
Ideally, you'd want to remove the valve for inspection, make sure it isn't warped, do a leak down test to ensure the valve seat seals, then remove the valve and maybe even polish it with some emery paper (fine automotive sane paper).
However, on an OHV (over head valve) engine, you need to to remove the cylinder head to remove the valves.
This leads to more labor and need for replacement parts, as the cylinder head gasket would likely need to be replaced. Additionally, whenever you reinstall a cylinder head, the valve to rocker arm clearances would need to be adjusted, which leads to more time spent on the repair. (I.e. more cost for the customer).
At the end of the day, this pressure washer now starts 1st pull, runs smooth, and the pump works. Making this a fully functional pressure washer!

Today we'll be using a #HotStapler to fix a cracked John Deere hood, on a #GX335 riding lawn mower.
This technique doesn't fuse the plastic together like #PlasticWelding would, instead, it uses metal staples to link the 2 pieces of plastic together.
To achieve penetration into the plastic, the tool uses electrical current to heat the Stainless Steel elements (this is why they're referred to as Hot Staples) which allows them to be pressed into the plastic.
By linking both pieces of plastic together, movement is eliminated. This increases the plastic's structural integrity, and prevents the crack from spreading further.
Combined with plastic welding, you could hypothetically achieve a fix that's stronger than the original plastic itself.

Today we'll be Adjusting the Front Axle Pivot on this Kubota GR2020G Riding Lawn Tractor.
Follow the steps shown in this video. As per the manuals instructions, we torqued the front axle bolts marked with a number 7 on the head to 36lbs-ft of torque.
This mower is also equipped with "Glide Steer" which allows this 4x4 mower to turn similar to how a Zero-Turn riding lawn mower turns.
The clutches in the rear transmission are engaged by rods that connect to the front spindles. When you turn the steering wheel to the left for example, this rod is pushed back, engaging the Glide Steer lever on the left side of the transmission, which engages the clutch packs, and cuts power to that inner left wheel, allowing it to "slip."

Today we'll be looking at a #Husqvarna #YTH24V48LS Riding Lawn mower that has a 48" Fabricated Steel Mower Deck.
Some models of this mower (YTH24 or 26V48) were sold with a Stamped Steel Mower Deck, and there will be a difference in the blades you can use.
I believe the LS is what designates the Fabricated Steel Deck, but don't quote me on that. These riding mowers came with a 24hp or 26hp engine.
The issue I had, was Husqvarna's internal IPL (illustrated parts listing) system defaulted back to the mulch kit for the Stamped Steel Deck, which lead to me ordering the wrong blades for a customers riding lawn mower.
After some investigation, here's what I found...
Stamped Steel 48" Deck;
Mulch Kit with Plastic Plug and 3 blades: 531309642
Hi-Lift: 532173920 (STENS 340-322 will work)
Mulch: 532173921 (STENS 340-091 will work)
Fabricated Steel 48" Deck;
Mulch Kit with Metal Cover, Metal Insert and 3 blades: 965894003 or 539113341
Hi-Lift: 539113425 (STENS 350-458 or Rotary 12123 will work)
Mulch: 522037401 (Rotary 14208 will work)
It's important to note that Oregon has replacements for the mulch blades for a 48" fabricated deck, however, the width was listed 3" instead of 2.5" so there may be interference.
Oregon also lists the lengths of some 48" stamped steel deck blades as being 16 11/16" which is even longer than the 16 5/8" blades. This, in addition with a slightly wider blade, may result in interference with the mower deck, or mulch kit insert.
I'm recommending you order the OEM or STENS blades listed above, as these are guaranteed to fit!

Today we'll be working on a Craftsman DGS6500 riding lawn mower that has a #Kohler #Courage #SV735 engine.
One of the engine's ignition modules failed, and is no longer producing spark. This is a V-twin, so the engine will still run, but will only run on 1 cylinder.
You may notice a loss of power, and white or black smoke coming from the muffler or exhaust. This is due to unburnt fuel in the cylinder going into the exhaust.
In this video, I explain how these older DSAI ignition modules work, why they failed, and I'll also take you through the process of replacing them with Kohler's upgraded ignition magnetos.
Skip to 7:50 to show the wiring, and skip to 20:31 for the installation of the new ignition modules.
The old ignition system is called DSAI for Digital Spark Advanced Ignition, and we'll be upgrading them to a MDI system, which stands for Magneto Discharge Ignition.
This is a complete upgrade kit, which includes newer, solid state ignition coils that are superior in design to the older ignition system.
Unlike the older Ignition Modules, that required 12v, these newer ignition magnetos do not require 12v power.
Since the new ignition system doesn't require 12v, there are 2 ways you can install this kit.
1. Leaving the original ignition wiring harness attached.
2. Removing the original ignition wiring harness completely.
I show you how to do both ways in this video, as removing the wiring harness completely may require you to connect the Fuel Shut-Off Solenoid to a source of 12v.
Either way, we'll be wiring into the Red and White wire.
Note: some engines have the Red/White wires located near cylinder 1, and others may have them located near cylinder 2. The steps are the same.
Additionally, some engines will have a separate 12v power wire going to the Fuel Shut-Off solenoid, which means you can disregard those steps in the video.
Here are the part numbers for the upgrade kit for various Kohler V-twin engines, it covers both the Courage and Command engine models;
CH/CV740 - 25 707 03-S
CH/CV750 - 25 707 03-S
SV735/740/840 - 32 707 01-S
These kits upgrade the old Ignition Module part numbers;
CH/CV740, SV735, SV740: Previous Modules 24 584 52, 24 584 63 24 584 53, 24 584 64, 24 584 89, (Upgraded Module with Diodes 24 755 172-S)
CH/CV750: 24 584 90 (Upgraded Module with Diodes 24 755 173-S)

Today we'll be working on an MTD Yard Bug, commonly referred to as an MTD Beetle.
It's the 1st time I've ever worked on one of these riding mowers, so I wanted to film the repair (even though it was just changing a drive pulley).
These are very unique, and I would even consider these to be somewhat rare, as you don't typically see many of them around.
In that regard, they're very similar to the Craftsman Utility Vehicle we've previously worked on. Just like that model, it's the only one I've ever worked on.
Today we just have to install a drive belt idler pulley, and I'll be using a used one I found in an old parts bin, just to get this customer up and running again.
Parts listed in the video will be placed on order, and can be replaced at a later time.

Today we'll be working on a Cub Cadet LTX 1142 KW riding lawn mower that has a Kawasaki FR600V engine.
My customer said when he starts the engine, it runs rough and blows black smoke out of the muffler.
These engines have a very common issue that occur, which is the choke lever on the carburetor gets stuck into the engaged position.
They do not disengage properly when you press the choke knob under the steering wheel to disengage the choke, mostly due to dirt and debris creating resistance around the choke lever.
In the past, I have found that degreasing, washing/cleaning the area with a hose, and lubricating the choke lever, works 9/10 times to solve this issue.
However, in the event that the choke lever still gets stuck, you can remove the choke rod to sand it down and lubricate it internally.
Today, I will show you how to do both methods, including the way that @Taryl Fixes All does it, as shown here in his video: youtu.be/-2SN4MVVgfU

Today we'll be upgrading a John Deere LA130's factory front wheel bushings to bearings.
In today's video, I provide you with all the part numbers necessary to do this upgrade yourself!
When compared to a metal bushing, wheel bearings have much less rolling resistance. Additionally, they will last much longer, due to not having a metal to metal contact, which will ultimately reduce friction, heat and wear.

Not to worry though, using this Electric Pin/Terminal Disconnector tool, we can easily swap over the plastic connector that we need!

Today we'll be looking at an Ingersoll 448 Riding Lawn Tractor that has a Briggs and Stratton 18hp Vanguard V-twin engine on it.
This engine runs smooth without an air filter, and runs rough with the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) official Briggs and Stratton air filter.
However, it runs perfectly smooth with a STENS air filter installed.
In today's video, I'll take you through the steps I took to diagnose this problem, as it can appear that there is a leaky needle valve in the carburetor.
Since the OEM Briggs and Stratton air filter is more restrictive, it allows less air to flow through it, thus increasing the fuel (to air) ratio.
As shown in real time, once the less restrictive air filter is installed, the engine ran smoothly.
I was also informed by an older mechanic (who's been in the small engine repair business for over 50 years) that some paper air filters can have too much moisture in them, which will cause them to be restrictive.
However, both of these air filters were sitting side-by-side on a table in the sun all afternoon, so I don't think moisture/humidity was causing the issue on this particular engine.
Let me know if you've ever experienced this issue in the comments down below!

Today I'll be showing you how to easily fix an uneven mower deck on many #Craftsman or #Husqvarna riding lawn mowers!
Craftsman outsourced the manufacturing of some of their riding lawn mowers to Husqvarna, which resulted in many riding lawn mower models from both companies to be affected by this design flaw.
The issue seems to be the main deck lifting shaft assembly (532422027 or 422027) becomes warped in the center, or bent downward on the right side.
Since there is no adjustment on the right side hanger rod, the right side of the mower deck hangs lower than the left, and cannot be raised. The result is an uneven cut.
In today's video, I show you how to easily fix this issue without spending much time or money, but you'll need a welder!
I use a nut and a welder, others like @doublewide6 Repairs LLC have use a drill and a spring clip to solve this issue, check out his quick video here: youtu.be/-AgOJrp5sNE
Either way, once you do this trick, the right side of your mower deck will be raised, and you can now fine tune the level of the mower deck using the adjustment rod and nut on the left side.
If you don't mind spending some money, you can purchase the adjustable rod, Husqvarna part number 589464805 and replace the old non adjustable rod on the right side.
However, if you do this, keep in mind that the main deck lifting shaft will still be warped, so this won't be a permanent fix.

Today we'll be working on an Ariens Riding Lawn Mower.
My customer complained that he was tired of having to fill these tires with air, every time he cut grass. So he asked that we install inner tubes into the front tires.
In order to remove the front wheels though, I need to remove the dust caps on the front axles 1st.
Once the dust caps are removed, I can pop out the E-clip and remove the wheel.

Today we'll be working on a Troy-Bilt riding lawn mower that won't start.
We worked on this riding mower last year, when I had to replace the starter.
Kohler has 3 generations of starters for these SV series engines, and only the 3rd generation starter should be installed, due to the previous generation starters having significant design flaws.
If you'd like to watch that video, click here: youtu.be/-FhVjUhBu8Y
Once I get it started using some carb spray, it runs perfectly smooth.
So what's the issue? Well, this mower has a speed control lever (that adjusts the engines RPM) that also has the carburetors choke cable integrated into it.
Over time, this cable can shift sideways from the spring tension (and also from the vibration of the engine).
If this cable is not properly adjusted, when you engage the choke lever on the center console (near the steering wheel) the choke plate inside the carburetor will not close fully.
If this choke plate does not close fully, your engine most likely will not start when cold, as the engine needs the carburetor to produce a rich mixture (less air and lots of fuel) to start.
Follow the steps in this video, and you'll have your riding mower fully operational once again!

Today we'll be doing a mower deck repair on a Kubota TG1860G riding lawn tractor.
Once I got the mower deck cleaned up, I found that it was a bit worse than I had originally thought. However, it's not as bad as some other mower decks I've seen in the past.
The worst spots are actually in "ideal" locations, as they are on large flat surfaces, so no bending or forming of metal will be required.
I'll simply cut out the thin spots, and weld in some new metal!
As I mention in the video, keep your mower decks clean to prevent having to do expensive weld repairs!

Today we'll be taking a break from the repairs and just going over some of the equipment I worked on recently. As well as some stuff I'm currently working on, and some equipment you'll see in some upcoming videos.
Business is usually slower during this transition period from Winter to Spring (because people aren't using their snow blowers anymore, and are not cutting grass yet either) but this year we've been busy!
I've received more calls during this period than we've ever had over the previous years. As stated in the video, that's definitely not a complaint, it's more of a blessing.
Mostly just basic servicing and Spring tune ups, but also some carb rebuilds and weld repairs.
Now is the time to take your lawn mower out of storage and start it up to make sure it starts! If it does, it's always a good idea to do any preventative maintenance now before the grass cutting season begins!
Stay tuned for next weeks video!
Today we're working on a Yardworks 10.5hp 29" snow blower with a Tecumseh HMSK105 engine.
My customer started to disassemble this when attempting to clean the carburetor himself, and ended up bringing it to us to fix.
The governor and carburetor linkage was also set improperly.
So in today's video, I'll be showing you how to properly set the governor, and also how to properly adjust the low idle RPM and also the high RPM setting.

Today we'll be reinstalling an engine that fell off a snow blower.
We'll be using Reversible Lock Nuts instead of the factory nuts and bolts that used lock washers.
The issue with lock washers is, in the event that the nut backs away from the lock washer, the lock washer no longer functions. Once this happens, the nut can loosen itself off, to the point where it falls off the threads of the bolt completely.
A reversible (or reverse) lock nut has an indent on the outside of the face, which slightly deforms the threads at the center of the nut. This allows the nut to be installed from either side.
Reversible lock nuts provide "prevailing torque" which means the lock nut creates friction between the threads of the nut and the bolt or stud treads, which in turn increase the force needed to tighten, as well as loosen the nut.
Another form of a prevailing torque lock nut, is the Nylock (nylon lock nut) nut that I showed in the video. The nylon insert has a smaller diameter than the opening of the nut, allowing the threads of the bolt or stud to dig into it. It is not recommended to reuse these types of lock nuts.
Additionally, there is also a Stover Lock Nut, which have a conical (dome) top and a flat bottom surface, featuring chamfered corners. The locking action, created by distortion of their top threads, is said to be capable of withstanding severe vibration and shock loads, similar to the reverse lock nut. However, unlike the reverse lock nuts, the stover type lock nuts can only be installed in 1 direction.
A "surface bearing" or "surface tension" locking mechanism would be a "serrated flange" or K-lock style nut (used to hold a Tecumseh carburetor onto the intake manifold), or a typical lock washer. This is essentially a washer that deforms under the pressure of the fastener.

Do you have a Canadiana (or Noma) snow blower and can't find any belt information?
Today I'll be working on some Canadiana CS826 (8hp 26") and a CN523 (5hp 23") snow blowers that both need belts.
When there's little to no information on belt sizes, and no part diagrams available online, you have to go through a process of elimination to see which belts fit, and which belts don't. Doing this, you'll eventually narrow it down to the right belt size and length.
The difference of a 1/2" smaller can cause the belt to be too tight, which means it will engage the pulley when the idler lever is disengaged.
While a 1/2" longer may cause the belt to be too loose, therefore causing slippage while engaged.
In this video, I show you how to go through this process, as well as show you some tips and tricks on how to adjust the belt keepers.
Here's what worked for me;
CS826 belts;
Impeller: I used 1/2" x 38" Original belt is a 51224MA (superseded to 313847MA) = 1/2" x 37.7"
Drive: I used a 1/2" x 30"
CN523 belts;
Impeller: STENS 248-030 that measured 1/2" x 30.5" Original belt is a 3526MA = 1/2" x 30.7"
Drive: Original belt is a 53790MA (superseded to a 313918MA) = 3/8" x 36.8"
As shown in the video, I was using STENS Aramid (Kevlar) covered belts, you could use raw edge belts but they tend to have more grip (which means there's less chance of slippage when engaged) however, they may grab the engine pulley even when disengaged.
The covered belts tend to allow that little bit of slip when disengaged, so they don't grab the engine pulley.
After finding the right belt size and length, I had to position and adjust the belt keepers properly to prevent the belts from grabbing the pulley while the idler pulley was disengaged.

Today we're working on a Craftsman snow blower that won't start.
I diagnose a seized throttle and governor linkage to be the cause of the no start issue, and investigate further as to why it happened.
Once we identify the root cause, I'll show you how to prevent this from happening again, as well as a trick to prevent another future issue!

This is a weird one, as I've never had to repair this issue before.
The shaft that turns the Impeller (Auger) Belt Idler Arm has so much forward and reverse movement (play) that it allowed the Idler Arm to physically make contact with the spinning Friction Plate, causing a Traction (Drive) Belt failure.
In today's video, I'll be using some washers to limit the horizontal movement of the shaft.
In the end, after installing 2 brand new belts, this snow blower was once again fully operational!

In today's video, we'll be looking at a 4450w (3550 running watt) Champion Generator (Model: 100459) that I purchased from a local wholesaler.
I'm naming this one "Project Tilted."
This Generator has significant damage to the metal frame, plastic air filter cover, as well as the plastic console that houses all of the electrical plugs and switches.
Other than the damage to those components, the engine and generator itself don't appear to have any damage. It also doesn't have any oil in it, as it's brand new and hasn't been run.
After a quick damage report (to inspect what else may be in need of replacement) I put some oil into the engine to see if it makes spark.
If this 3550w Champion Generator is worth saving, I'll order some parts to fix it up, and follow up with a part 2!

In todays video we'll be installing the newly designed, upgraded MTD Steering Rack Service Kit on a Cub Cadet CC30 riding lawn mower.
Part Number for this kit: 753-11064B.
Steering makes a clicking noise? Steering wheel turns but the wheels don't? This kit will solve the issue, and may be covered under your riding lawn mowers factory warranty!
The issue is that the previously designed steering rack support (black plastic) gets worn out, which allows the steering rack to move away from the pinion gear. Due to this additional movement, the teeth on the pinion gear no longer make contact with the teeth on the steering rack. It is common for the operator to hear a clicking noise when turning the steering wheel, which will then put your steering wheel off-center when the wheels are facing forward.
Check for the model and serial number under the seat, and then call your local Troy-Bilt, Columbia, or Cub Cadet dealer. All of these models are manufactured by MTD, and this particular kit will work on all models mentioned in the video.
Note: This kit has been updated to include a stronger steering rack support (white plastic). Most photos of this kit are outdated, and show the old black plastic steering rack support. Make sure you confirm you're getting the latest version with the white plastic steering rack support!
Once again, if your riding lawn mower is still under the factory warranty, this repair will be covered by the manufacturer. If your riding lawn mower is past the warranty period, you may purchase this kit yourself, and simply follow the steps shown in this video to have your equipment back up and running again!

Today we'll be removing a seized impeller shaft bearing on a Craftsman snow blower.
We'll be using the Induction Innovations Venom HP induction heating tool, and a Split Bearing Puller to remove the bearing from the shaft.
The induction heat is just used to expand the metal bearing, and make it easier for the split puller to remove it from the shaft. (An oxy-acetylene torch would work as well). However, without using some form of heat, you may damaged parts of your split puller, as it will be harder to remove things.
Once the bearing is hot, we assemble and use the split puller to remove it.
Finally, once the bearing has been removed, we clean up the shaft with some emery paper (fine sand paper) and apply some Permatex Nickel Anti-seize to prevent this bearing from seizing to the shaft in the future.

Today we'll be fixing the tilt mechanism on a Honda HSS928 snow blower, by removing, and lubricating a seized Gas Assist Damper.
Honda uses a 2-way Gas Assist Damper with a manually operated relief valve, to allow the auger housing on the snow blower to tilt backwards and forwards.
This is for 2 reasons; 1 is for cutting higher snow drifts, and the 2nd being increased mobility during transportation.
A common issue with this tilt feature, is that the Gas Assist Damper sometimes gets seized into the compressed or extended position.
This usually happens during storage, when the snow blower has sat for an extended period of time, and has not moved from that position.
Once the Gas Assist Damper seizes, it will not allow the operator to change the position of the snow blower's auger housing.
If the Gas Assist Damper gets seized in the compressed position (Raised auger housing) the snow blower will not function properly to clear snow from your drive way.
Additionally, if the Gas Assist Damper gets seized in the extended position (Lowered auger housing) the snow blower will be difficult to move.

Today we'll be using the Mini-Ductor Venom HP induction heating tool to remove a snow blower wheel that has seized to the axle.
This is a common issue on snow blowers, as the wheels get wet, rust starts to form, which results in the wheel seizing to the drive axle.
Generally, an oxy-acetylene torch would be used to heat the inside of the wheel, in hopes of expanding the metal enough, to allow the wheel to be rotated on the axle.
However, using induction heat will allow us to specifically target the area we want to heat, and will also prevent us from having to use an open flame. Using a torch will only heat the side the flame is applied to, and the flame will deflect off the surface, heating other areas that aren't supposed to be heated. This can result in damage to the rubber valve stem, tire, and other parts of the wheel.

Today we'll be upgrading the Lug Nuts on my 2019 Ford F150.
Have you recently taken your seemingly "new" vehicle into the dealership, only to hear that the lug nuts have "swollen" and need to be replaced?
The manufacturer may not cover this replacement under warranty!
The reason you will eventually have to replace the lug nuts on your vehicle is because many manufacturers are now using a 2 piece lug nut, which will eventually deform over time.
There's many discussions over why they deform, and I mention 2 of these in the video.
Some say water and moisture gets into the seam, and then expands the outer shell when it freezes.
Ford argued that it's actually the force from the use of impact guns that deforms the outer shells over time.
Either way, you'll eventually be forced to replace the lug nuts on your 2015+ Ford F150, so you might as well be proactive (like I am now) and get it done before they "swell."
These lug nuts, and the Ford OEM F150 lug nuts take a 21mm socket, but once they swell or become deformed, a 22mm socket may need to be used to remove them. In some instances, the socket may need to be hammered onto the lug nut.
This increases the amount of time a technician must spend working on your vehicle, after taking it in for a routine service/inspection, since they usually rotate your tires during the service.
This information is not specific to just Ford, as I mentioned in the video, many manufacturers are unfortunately using this design of lug nut. However, the Ford F150 is the best selling truck in North America for the past 50 years, so you could imagine how many people will eventually run into this issue.
Parts used in this video;
Gorilla: 61148CX x 24 (24 pack on eBay) M14 x 1.5
ebay.ca/itm/183932391950
These lug nuts are compatible with over 730 different vehicles and models, so please do your own research when choosing replacement solid lug nuts for your vehicle.

Today we're working on a Grip-Rite GR55G10X wheelbarrow compressor, powered by a Honda GX160 engine.
After being fully serviced (engine and compressor oil, spark plug, air filter, carb clean and some fresh fuel) this engine would fire up on the 1st pull, but only run at low rpm.
Because every other issue has been eliminated by the service, I diagnose this issue as weak spark.
Weak spark can cause poor ignition of the air fuel mixture, in the combustion chamber.
We'll be removing, testing and replacing the spark plug cap (STENS 135-226).

Today we're working on a Briggs and Stratton v-twin with a failed governor gear. This is a common issue, and the repair usually goes smoothly. Simply remove the broken pieces, and replace the damaged parts.
The reason for this failure? My customer didn't check the oil, and ended up running this engine low on oil.
While running the engine low on oil, the governor gear wasn't being properly lubricated. The result was the governor gear seized to the governor gear shaft.
This caused an additional problem, the gear was now spinning the shaft which enlarged the hole that the shaft is pressed into.
In today's video, I show you how to fix this issue, by welding the shaft to increase the outside diameter. This will give the shaft a pressure fit when we hammer it back into the hole, and I'll even use some JB-Weld to add a bit of strength.

Today we'll be working on a Troy-Bilt TB30R riding lawn mower, these are identical to the Cub Cadet CC30, as well as the Columbia CR30 riding lawn mowers.
This came into the shop for a basic service, however, the issue we'll be diagnosing today is the battery not charging.
