I don't hear you ask ~ Was it perchance chores divvied out between lyricist composer Johnny Mercer and composer Harold Arlen Consider the predicament Mercer and Arlen two music greats in standoff over credits for a measly ditty ~hardly measly~ Mercer was ambidextrous ~ adroit in matters music and lyrics He doubled up for his classic song Dream more popular than Out Of This World since its 1940s composition ~ a tempting shootout Out of this World v Dream ~you know the hard rockers drill Slash V Van Halen but both songs a handy reference for Mercers many sided talent. Do I express a preference for either? Yes~ Dream is attractive if somewhat cosy and compliant not as striking as the heraldic outreach of Out of this World presently in need of an imaginative reprise or in exercise conscious times a bout of jogging to get back to its former glory. Not quite Michael Buble material but with impunity he could adopt a Vic Damone persona and have a respectable go at the classic especially as Damone and Buble are not dissimilar.. Anyway Out of this World essential to the Harold Arlen catalogue of great songs. The April Fools was meant to be a chic take on the psychedelicJet set with some marital complications and luckily thats how it turned out. Oh and did I mention veterans Myrna Loy Charles Boyer from cinemas golden 1930s years ~ adding to the nostalgia not forgetting a conspicuous face from 1970s Mash movie Sally Kellerman a hyper housewife smack up to date with contemporary psychology even perhaps fashionable modes of potty training ~This song attributed to Mongo Santa Maria Band but dont believe a word ~those gobdaws dont dig the lissome swing needed for this la la la ~vocal smooth stuff ~ Watermelon Man how are ya ? ~ here the Mongo men minus their bongos are just a nominal houseband ~. the group had a reputation in 1960s as a tranche of similar Latin sounds prevailed however for authentic guttural Spanish ~ take a listen to Ray Baretto 1963 El watusi better than rubbish rap indeed my kind of rap yeah the real deal i just loved that song in the 1960s~ perfect to test your vernacular ease with the Spanish lingo Another special April Fools moment on U Tube a singer launching into~ I Say a little prayer~ wrongfooting perplexed Jack lemmon Theres also an updating of a true 1950s ; classic Les Baxters ~Quiet Village 1969 style but thats a different Martin Denny story amply celebrated on U Tube . Indeed the last person to speak to the screen goddess Theres an excellent documenary of the events with Sinatras classic version Mood Indigo Ill Wind backgrounding the footage I remember reading newspaper on August holiday weekend 1962 impact akin to John F Kennedys death a year plus later Still in his early 20s Marvin Hamlisch and already a veteran of some excellent stuff late composers identifiable gift for film music. James Bernard - Nosferatu ifcopod 2017-06-29 | 1950s Hammer Horror garnered a passing reputation for schlocky stuff not as schlocky as some suggest ~ Nowadays the 1950s Hammer backdrops seem somewhat stagey~ wan even lurid against todays hyper graphics where manner shares equal weighting with story .Licensed in the name of fantasy and why not a zillion creatures explode indulgently from your local friendly cranium ~yippee dont we just love it? In hammer there was little messing about ~ believe what you saw ~ almost but that was the state of the art ~Nowadays As the song goes ~ what you see you dont believe and what you hear you dont believe. Which song? Of its type this Nosferatu music by Bernard amongst his most exciting Indeed allow time tunnelling .Had composer Benjamin Britten overheard this as he set down his Tarquinius Ride music in Rape of Lucretia 1940s opera he might have acknowledged the swift intensity of Bernards exciting chase the equal of his own Tarquinius piece but composer Bernard Stevens was more on Brittens wavelength. Brittens dramatic sustain over long stretches in his operas Peter Grimes etc marks his music well above this isolated if riveting Bernard piece. Reg Tilsley - Scheherazade ifcopod 2017-06-26 | Theres Nothing like a good melody ~ and this is nothing like a good melody Boom! boom! . This one is up there with the classics Ifcopods lament not being first out of the blocks on TUBE with the Rimsky Korsakov version Reg Tilsley recorded in mid 1960s . Dont you love it? You dont? a raincheck on your musical responses is advised The thing about a string orchestra ~savour the distant perspectives not crowding the landscape. The human voice requires focussed attention ~ there are plusses but human voice too specific for this sort of music needing the infinitesimal variety of orchestral colouring ~ as the mind craves landscapes evoking distant places The tune has been around the houses one of the most celebrated in classical canon.Somewhere in my collection resides a copy by American jazz arranger Skip Martin jazz trombone in attendance~ which naturally I cant locate ~ but its there somewhere..Done a little differently perhaps a tad soupy. but ifcopod resolutely declines criticising the arranging prowess of Skip Martin who featured throughout 1950s watch for his name on movie scores from the era. Later he joined Sinatras Reprise Repertory for early 1960s stuff~ I had known the Skip Martin Schererazade a lot longer than the Tilsley version~ Martin did an arrangement of the full Scheherazade suite with a big jazz band in tow sporting the stellar Hollywood brigade from the era 1959 two leading trombonists Frank Rosolino( in the top ten of all trombonists ) and Milt Bernhardt. they shared some great stereo effects together on the album~ stereo still a novelty in late 1950s but first and foremost two great trombonists. I like repeating this snippet Bernhardt was soloist on Sinatras I 've got you under my skin. What a boast compiling a CV but this Tilsley version of the Scheherazade slow movement ~if anything is the one to choose ~ not overly done in the arranging department..In fact Reg Tilsley deserved kudos for his orchestral arrangements which if marketed differently could have achieved greater fame though posthumously his reputation grows courtesy of U Tube Of course Scheherazade is classical music at least thats their story. I remember once (upon a time) the idea of" schmaltzying" the classics was frowned on mainly by males dont ya know but if your musical template includes rock jazz making the leap across is a doddle and while youre at it try some old style heavy rock .My favourite orchestral Old Devil Moon is by Michel Legrand but Tilsley's on U Tube deserves more attention a serious contender as guitar and flute snake through the textures ~ lush and lazy replete with telling instrumental l touches. perfect companion to his Scheherazade.

If I had my time perhaps I wouldnt have posted this Alright Its doing the business of sorts but what sort of sputtering business. The best one can say Its interesting not very.~ a plus ~ it doesnt hang around ~I could sample the next random offering and it might be just as good.Trouble is some sounds make a splash striving for effect ~ next stop the rubbish tip . Is it feasible to suggest without kindling ire of the populace his uber sophisticated musical approach was just too uber ~not an easy listen for simple folk ~the passing trade if you will. Punter unfriendly aspects were there if not in abundance ~ a searching ~ demanding musicality capable of probing musics darker nooks crannies even nannies ~ aspects occasionally mashed by the singers delightful caterwauling but all part of richly tiered musical impedimenta ~ oh yes ~ and " unwavering even flash virtuosity" the sort we all love We do dont we? Oh no Not another wrong channel music interloper ~ the singers artistry~ is~ was a tad sophisticated. ~ lament of jazz down the decades. His story didnt vary~ Initial modest respect gigs aplenty the lot of many but success of the Sinatra sort was not his musical lot ~ so it remained over unspectacular but loyal decades recognised by respected commentators and luckily some great singers. His musical accomplishment needs just one listen to confirm quality.~ One aspect ~ versatility~equally an enviable virtuosity. vocal and emotional occasionally tempting the darker side of the emotional spectrum . He tried a number of slots in his native America with modest success but his musicality was never in doubt hailed by leading jazz singers. I came across the music in a 1980s? performance courtesy ever reliable BBC and was smitten ~ The BBC performance was faster pointed up with impassioned flair. Initially I thought that was how it should sound but overall I prefer a more relaxed approach. Enescu excellent composer makes best of his material repeating lovely lyrical phrase ( 5 mins 21 secs ) before drawing the orchestral strands together moving to convincing resolution.This ~ Monte Carlo Philharmonic performance conducted by Lawrence Foster is not quite a best of both worlds... Item caught my ear on Robert Joyce vinyl was a dash to to finish approach on Hyfrydol despite generous Andante maestoso marking~ a field day for tempo disquisition but compensation about music ~ spiritual latitude ~ slow or fast both sometimes seem correct.As dust settles some touted 20th century composer reputations. remain in the balance The absorption of early orchestral piece Solent into darker world of Vaughan Williams Ninth Symphony lends context to both . Given a chance I'll take another listen U Tubes continuing sense of wonderment Do I prefer them to pop music .More ill served questions and Ill preremptorily terminate this rant sorry ~missive .In case this seems a soft sell ~ listen to music from wild side no definitely not Lou Reed ' innocent music lover you thought Lou Reeds was the original oh the pity ~ permit a supressed titter but then rockers usually have A to B range~Elmer Bernsteins 1962 Walk on Wild Side Another wildsider MichaelTippett's opera Knot Garden better than a brisk walk U Tube have removed it Oh the shame Dumbing down ?.Alarm is off return to your seats in orderly fashion~Tippett Knot Garden still there Just as with late Pierre Boulez some talked up ~big dealed 20th century composers are in decline Tippett is through the hoops his music sounding even better ..Suffice to say a great 20th century composer visionary a highly charged eclectic mix a radiant listen controlled shaped by instinctual logic ..How many times have you read encomia like that and the putative hero composer promptly crumbles to dust Of course music critics dont do retrospective "we got it wrong" humility. "Dark" etc was early Angela Lansbury movie This present cobbled together Heart is a Lonely Hunter incidental music If memory serves compact recorders didnt get going until late 1960s. The Heart may be a lonely Hunter but the ear is sensitive to musical snippets blessed with resistance to datedness .I didnt quite see the movie first time saw it early 1970s . No reason as I was also knocking around in 1960s when Heart is a Lonely Hunter was released Affectionate comments prompted by Michael McKenna's posting of Dark at Top of Stairs on U Tube~ the musical evocations offered by Max Steiner theme are gently sunlit ~autumnal rather than fully fledged vernal melody Of A Summer placeDo I prefer Summer place and "Dark at top" to Tippetts visionary masterpieces?Typical ~ dropping in the the difficult questions first.

Ifcopod go for broke with something obscure You know those predictable radio TV quizzes name a theme with range from A to B ~ Dallas to Dynasty . Were I putting the populace through the wringer?.. How about . Do I know exotic theme rarely heard for short lived TV series Follow the Sun from early 1960s ~ indeed. . Had it on an album by a Stan Kenton arranger~ name momentarily eludes me ~ 2017 january ~ eureka ~courtesy~ U Tube ~ arranger name trombonist Harry Betts . Check UTube under~ 30 mostly obscure TV themes listened again ~ Follow the Sun great for orchestral buffs.~1961 Series Follow the Sun accompanying music cried out for colour yet enjoyable in a Martin Denny's sort of exotica even more cherishable Early 1960s footage not colour and it shows .'. That evocative theme music on U Tube .I Recently did a piece on another classic River of No Return ~the question overhanging was Did Lionel Newman of Randy Newman and sundry Newman dynasty fame compose that memorable song It seems both were composed by Lionel Newman so we have another to add to the Newman dynasty cache Follow the Sun . U tube in their enterprising way have scoped and scooped a short section from Follow the Sun I'm overdoing it but makes great listening if ok viewing In 1963 movie Move Over Darling ~ surprise ~ another Lionel Newman score as late Chuck Connors and Doris Day splash about on screen ~ music featured not dissimilar cross between Les Baxter's Quiet Village and Newman's Follow the Sun.In the 1960s Batman series brief swirling theme linking scenes perhaps by Nelson Riddle . A similar link used to kick off this arrangement.for singer Carol Ventura Question both are from 1965 which came first ? Did Batman music influence Benny Golson arranger on this session or vice versa Correction just checked Carol Ventura song recorded Feb 1965 a year before Batman series. So our man Benny Golson backing Ventura on this session was first out of the blocks .Ifcopod this is not an instrumental so have care and attend to annotatotors duty respecting singer Carol Ventura turning in an excellent version of song from musical Anyone can Whistle Just shows how many good singers deserving a career never made it Barbra Streisand Recorded this but I'd settle for this bronzy Ventura stylingIf you're interested there's some excellent Benny Golson footage also from 1965 with the English jazz fraternity including the late lamented Tubby Hayes on flute but then Tubby was exceptional all rounder even turning in excellent solos in movie music ifcopod posted Tubby's classic Milestones always worth 7 or so minutes

An armful of attitude son ~ But attitude was yesterdays rebellion .not todays bland celebrity with every nobody posing as somebody. How did Paul MCartney succeed? For starters he's Paul McCartney furthermore The Long and Winding Road minstrel paradoxically showed pouting male attitude the door.~Elvis pouted for another reason and discussionThere are many aspects to the King's career ~ decade by decade ~ many Elvises not including the army of impersonators. and still Elvis hasnt left the building Nowadays theres a switch to later trilogy Elvis. Either way one of the great voices inescapable for those weaned on such music. I had an early RCA album with two great classics Thats alright Mama and Mystery Train ~no contest Elvis owned those songs. There was a skip~ if memory serves ~ Thats alright Mama .It was the early days of vinyls so skip was left in place but annoyed every time it clicked across the vinyl Almost defining hip at one level .Heartbreak Hotel a favourite .I listened and loved Elvis snarling take ..When it came out 1956 ~ one Stan Freberg to whom the world of satire owes a lot~ was flat out doing satirical takes of singers including Harry Belafonte~ "~ a singer allergic to rock music ~ Paul Anka's Diana better ~ Elvis ~pure rock~ was a foil to overly sincere Belafonte . Belafonte and another 1950s act Kingston Trio from another age have disappeared ~almost without trace . Belafonte received the Freberg drilll on Day~O ~ deliciously ribbed by Freberg delivering the immortal line ~ " I come through the window" ~ still brilliant Pop music needs another Stan Freberg to stave off impending rigor mortis threatening moribund pop leviathan .Ricky Gervais tried his best to get beneath celebrity surface on Extras with Office his masterpiece ~ probably walked away despairing~ what a crowd~ inhabiting the world of the terminally self obsessed ~ on a headlong rush nowhere and ~minus reflective irony. And day dawned for Elvis to be corralled on Heart Break Hotel with Freberg delivering the second immortal line " its close enough for jazz". Actually I missed Heartbreak Hotel first time round joining the clan sometime later for All shook Up.As I listen to this opus presently assailing your senses it nudges my ears into alert profile. ~ Not often heard but listen up to a roaring if not yelping trombone kicking off this Elvis track. You have this annotators assurance said trombonist Dick Noel could claim his seat in any top jazz band The other observation refers to aforementioned Heartbreak Hotel.~ the piano solo .Not many know this ~ worse .luck even more couldnt care . Anyway I've started as the TV compere says so I'll finish.The spidery piano on Heartbreak Hotel was late Floyd Cramer of Last Date and other country stylings . Still love Cramers piano on Heartbreak Hotel sounds great even after Stan Frebergs delightful mauling. But dig the piano on this track propping Elvis more full frontal bluesy rock perhaps but raunchy to the gills This meaningful question who makes the cut as to Elvis best?.There's some great hard guitar also a throwback to early days of rock n roll( when did you last see that term hard rock ~word in print) all the while Elvis is looking on~ the uber master of ceremonies This Elvis opus escaped attention of the populace seriously folks a classic song gone missing send for the fire brigade and a well stashed posse.. Some need an appointment to specsavers for reboot on what they're missing raising another issue Elvis has taken too much stick for his 20 plus films No need to explain them as Col. Toms Folly ~ Just checked personnel for this 1966 session confirming ubiquitous Floyd Cramer of Heartbreak Hotel fame returned for the piano solo The musical arranger Jeff Alexander a veteran Elvis associate back to Elvis earliest films.Story goes according to another Elvis composer arranger Walter Scharf even after formal niceties Scharf reassuring Elvis there was no need to keep saying sir or Mister Scharf Elvis kept Sir ~ing and Mr Scharf~ing . relentlessly ~occasioning mirth .
