USF Libraries - Tampa campusIn this talk, Michael Sells examines the role of religious narratives, symbols, institutions, and beliefs in motivating and justifying acts of genocide and "ethnic cleansing," the possibility that religion can play a role in the post-conflict healing of Bosnian society, and the suggestion, made by influential Bosnian scholars and peacemakers, that the near destruction and remarkable survival of Bosnia offers both a warning and a hope for the post Cold War World.

Initiated by the University of South Florida Libraries Special Collections and held at the Tampa Bay History Center, the event was meant to draw attention to two landmark photograph collections that document local history.
Unrestricted by copyright and shared freely online by the Tampa/Hillsborough County Library System and USF Libraries, the Burgert Brothers photos are beloved by locals. Lesser known but soon to become a staple resource just like the Burgerts, the George "Skip" Gandy Commercial and Aerial Photograph collection is slated to be digitized in the fall of 2023, providing the community with more than 50,000 iconic images taken between the 1960s and the 2000s by Skip and his father, Sandy Gandy. Through the generosity of Gandy and his heirs, the massive collection will be available to the public free of copyright restrictions and is sure to change the way the public remembers and imagines Florida's past.
As Chip said, "every photograph has a story," and he wants them all to be told. With his passion for the photos and a generous gift of $20,000 to the USF Libraries, Chip's example encouraged other donors to give $10,000 for the project. These gifts expedited the process of digitizing Gandy's work for all. Join Chip as he sheds new light on the stories behind the Burgerts and Gandys as photographers and chroniclers of history.Meet Zibby, Assistant Director of Communications & MarketingUSF Libraries - Tampa campus2023-02-23 | Contact via email or Teams at erwilder@usf.eduIntroduction to Author Rights and CopyrightUSF Libraries - Tampa campus2022-08-22 | Jason Boczar of the USF Libraries discusses your rights as an author, and different types of publishing.Introduction to Creative CommonsUSF Libraries - Tampa campus2022-08-22 | LeEtta Schmidt of the USF Libraries discusses the different types of copyright, and creative commons licenses. The Importance of Sustainable ScholarshipUSF Libraries - Tampa campus2022-08-22 | Carol Ann Borchert discusses the challenges and importance of sustainable scholarship at the USF Libraries.Giving Week 2022: I LOVE the USF LibrariesUSF Libraries - Tampa campus2022-04-06 | Giving Week coincides with National Library Week, which is an annual celebration of libraries, librarians and library workers. Dr. Silvia was introduced by Camielle Crampsie, Assistant Librarian. After the presentation, Dr. Silvia answered questions from attendees. (Event was hosted at the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library on the Library Deck.)
About the Book: Many with dyslexia and related learning and attention deficit disorders also struggle with low self-esteem and emotional health, leading to the assumption that they cannot succeed, especially in professions dominated by reading and writing. This book profiles famous broadcast journalists who overcame the long-overlooked, often misdiagnosed, learning disability to succeed at the highest level, among them CNN's Anderson Cooper and NBC's Richard Engel.Racism in School Suspensions: Through the lens of students, families & community membersUSF Libraries - Tampa campus2021-11-12 | The USF Libraries hosted speakers Dr. Brenda Walker and Dr. Marquis Holley to discuss Project R.I.S.E.S. (Racism in School Exclusionary Suspensions). Focusing on the high suspension rates of Black/African-American students in elementary, middle, and high schools, this initiative is a part of a year-long series of research projects funded by USF to explore the perpetuation of systemic racism in society that has resulted in economic inequities, social injustices, police violence, and other impacts.
Our speakers were introduced by Emily Mann, USF Libraries Diversity and Inclusion Committee Chair. After the presentation, Dr. Walker and Dr. Holley answered questions from attendees.
(This Microsoft Teams Live event was recorded on Wednesday, November 10, 2021, from 4 - 5 p.m.)
About the Speakers: Dr. Brenda L. Walker is a professor in the Exceptional Student Education Program at the University of South Florida, Director of the Call Me MiSTER program, and lead principal investigator of Project R.I.S.E.S. Dr. Walker is also the director of a federal outreach and technical assistance project that enhances the urban school research capacity of faculty and graduate students in minority institutions.
Dr. Marquis B. Holley is a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) professional that has taught from kindergarten to senior-level in higher education, working with students, faculty, and staff on these concepts. His classes focus on Critical Thinking and Diversity-based research through educational practices on a local, national, and global level. In this age of disruption and a global pandemic, our students are adapting to new realities, and educational institutions everywhere have learned what an empty nest feels like. In the spirit of homecoming, we wanted to show some love for the people and places we call "home." Home Sweet Homecoming draws upon images and documents from the University Archives. It is a tribute to our students past and present, the university we've built together, and a heartfelt reminder that there is no place like our home away from home.
This recording is from our virtual event Thursday, October 8th, as we unveiled the exhibit. In response to this growing urgency, we have begun the curation of the Florida Environment and Natural History (FLENH) Collections, incorporating over 20 existing collections from scientists and scholars that chronicle Florida’s environment and natural history. Collections include rare books and maps of now extinct or evolved species of flora and fauna spanning more than 400 years, oral histories from some of the Bay’s most prominent stewards, Audubon Florida’s archive of daily journals and statewide warden reports from 1900 to 1970, and our most recent acquisition of USF Integrative Biology Professor Emeritus John Ogden’s work, who studied coral reef ecosystems throughout the world and maintained binders of slides, data, and narratives, with published papers attached.
This virtual event from Thursday, September 284th tours the FLENH hub, where you can see what potential these collections hold, where students, scholars, and the community alike can research, discover, and interrogate the past and design solutions for the future of our environment.
