Electric freight trains around the world - a compilation LBSC 2023-11-16 | SEE PINNED COMMENT FOR VIDEO SOURCESThis is a collection of videos (not filmed by me) that feature electric freight trains from around the world. I have tried to provide as broad a picture and include as many different countries as I could, though not every single country that operates electric freight is included. If the original creators of any of the clips included do not want me to reupload their video, I shall take the video down and reupload it without their video.This is a video with a purpose. That purpose is a reminder to all people that electric freight trains are the practical and viable method of decarbonising freight rail, and have been for over a century, while battery and hydrogen remain untested and unproven in regular freight rail service. It is also a broader reminder to Americans that American railroads are an outlier in many ways, and I would like to rant on this topic for a fair bit. Far too often both people inside and outside the US rail industry assume that the way American railroads do something is the way non-American railways do it as well. Take a look at Europe, for instance. Are they buying American locomotives? They most certainly are not, they pretty much purchase solely from European manufacturers because American manufacturers don't produce anything near what they want.So much nonsense about electrification gets written in America. Tired old canards keep getting repeated like America being too big (despite all the long freight lines that have been electrified) or existing electric locomotive designs being unsuitable for American operations (the video quite clearly shows how this is false). Not to mention the continous nonsense that gets spouted about electric locomotives somehow lacking tractive effort - where diesel locomotives get this extra tractive effort that electric locomotives can never have is unexplained...And remember that this is entirely the AAR's fault. There is no government funding for electrification because the railroads have never asked for it. Instead they have continually propagandised against electrification, and opposed it when passenger transit agencies have proposed to pay for it, to such an extent that most Americans do not even think of electrification as an option. They have also continually made "America's freight rail is the best and safest in the world" propaganda, which despite being blatantly false (and it's always been false) again most Americans (and many non-Americans) unfortunately believe, never realising that the only source for this claim is the AAR - even the FRA repeats it, citing the AAR in a blatant example of regulatory capture.Not to mention how much the private railroads suckle off the federal teat...Maybe this will stop Americans from being in denial that their rail system is outdated and slowly losing traffic. Railroads' high modal share in the US is mostly due to external factors like geography. American rail exceptionalism is completely unwarranted.No doubt someone will mention things like European length limits despite that a) not being a wholly negative thing and b) unrelated to electrification, or make obviously false claims about non-European countries chomping at the bit to copy American freight rail practices (indeed wholesale copying of another country's rail practices almost never happens, even in the "heavy haul" field of long and usually slow trains there are plenty of differences between countries despite the claims of some, every country has their own quirks that are unlikely to change - they've had plenty of time to adopt the American model of very long and very slow if they really wanted to, and even when they do run long slow trains as you can see from the video half the time they're electric, and that's definitely not going to change - to say nothing of how many countries run their coal/stone/etc trains at faster speeds or at night to prevent them interfering with other traffic)...
